I LOVE CONEY ISLAND!!!! It's a favorite. I CAN'T turn it off if it comes on. It'll definately grow on you if you like it already!! Thanks for the great reaction and for all us Coney Island lovers!!!
This is my favourite song from Evermore❤ The bridge is a callback to so many TS songs - gold clock… hanging - Back To December Happy birthday- The moment I knew Bluest skies darkest grey - Dear John Accident - Out of the woods Podium - she didn’t thank Calvin in one of her speeches which set him off!!! I LOVE THIS SONG
@@adabadoskova2915 hi so it isn’t a direct reference but in my mind - Taylor singing is her apologies and Matt is the apologies she didn’t get. So while other references seem pretty clear to me - this takes me back to December because there she does admit she didn’t value what she had and did keep him hanging!
There are several interesting things about this song. 1) Taylor is a big The National fan and since she knows their music, she wrote the part for Matt Berninger as if she were Matt and even tho I am not that familiar with The National's music, from what I've heard she did a great job of doing that. 2) There is a theory connected with the bridge of this song, that it represents the order of the re-recordings: -gold clock - Fearless - more precisely now since we have TWILY TV lyric video -in the hallway with a big cake, happy birthday - Red: The Moment I Knew and All Too Well 10 -did I paint your bluest skies the darkest grey - Speak Now. Dear John -when I got into the accident, the sight that flashed before me was your face - 1989, vehicular manslaughter aka snowmobile accident with Harry: Out Of The Woods and Is It Over Now? -when I walked up to the podium I think I forgot to say your name: she didn't mention Calvin Harris in her 2016 Grammy win speech, that was before reputation, and he then was asked about writing with Taylor at This Is What You Came For promo and he was like "no, I can't see writing with her" when she literally co-wrote it...and that is kinda mentioned in I Did Something Bad, so rep - "YOUR NAME" from the last mentioned line, representing debut 3) She also said in an interview that she was really excited about the line "with a big cake, happy birthday", cause she was releasing evermore on her birthday week and so she said "I actually got my favourite lead singer of my favourite band to wish me happy birthday, sooo...that's the real win"
def my top 3 on evermore, taylor might never get the sorry from the exes for what they did her wrong so she wrote a song for them instead, it's also a way of letting go and 'what's past is past'.
You really should check out Taylor's other collabs with The National and Big Red Machine which is a collab between Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and The National. Taylor has freatured on The Alcott by The National, and Renegade by Big Red Machine. Both are amazing songs.
I love this song so much. It was always in my top 5 or so on evermore but it may be #1 at this point. I can never quite get enough of it. As some of the other comments have mentioned you may also want to check out The Alcott which is a song by The National that features Taylor. I personally like coney island more but The Alcott is also a great track. And based on how you reacted to this one, I think you would also really appreciate Renegade. Renegade is a song by Big Red Machine which is a band that is made up of Aaron Dessner from The National and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver, both of which Taylor worked with a lot on evermore and folklore. Taylor is a featured artist on the song but she basically sings the lead on the track. It's a great song. But I do know people who struggle to listen to it because like you in this song, they almost feel called out by Taylor in the lyrics. I LOVE that song as well. And I personally really appreciate how honest the lyrics are about how difficult it can be to be in a relationship with a person who is struggling with their mental health.
This song reminds me of several of her other ones- also reminds me of "Tolerate it", and "Happiness", "Champagne Problems", all in Evermore. There's a line, I've heard in her 1989 vault that has a huge similarity... @4.02, "too polite to leave me", I had to find it! From Suburban Legends, "I broke my own heart coz you were too polite to do it", and the final one- on Midnights in Midnight Rain, "I broke his heart cause he was nice...". Some from the protagonist pov, (Champagne Problems), others from the partners pov, like August as the side chick, or Midnight Rain, and then both, ("Exile"). Spanning songs from what 4 albums? Re: injury or death? Could be about Harry Styles, from Suburban Legends, - with reference to the snowmobile accident? Or Joe, (co- writer on both albums and Midnights), if it's a metaphor...I dunno. I just found the recurring sentiment and almost identical phrasing interesting.
also not to mention that in coney island there is literally used the word "suburban" which is not in any other song, like when Taylor posted that little snippet, together with that polite line, I suspected that the lyrics will be from Suburban Legends and I was right hihi
when they said the eyes gets colder and colder i take it as two different meaning as the song progresses. 1. losing the love in someone’s eyes that used to be there, but dimmed due to constant and recurring disappointment for not making them the “centerfold”. basically not making them a priority, forgotten appointments/dates, missed celebrations and losing the warmth it evokes when your partner simply says your name. (i forgot to say your name) it sounded wrong now. 2. eyes gets colder and colder in literal sense of the meaning. during the accident, on the precipice of death, he saw her face and as he drifts into the abyss of nothingness flashes of the times he disappointed her appeared before his dying eyes. “as the sun goes down” he died. when they said “where did my baby do?” while waiting. at first it’s them waiting for their partner, but getting ditched over and over… now they are waiting for the said partner, who’s never coming.
I don't think this one is about different love languages though I can see it, when you "forget to say their names on the podium" and thanking them for being by your side all those years, it's more than being high-maintance, it's being taken for granted.
If you wanna listen to The National, I highly recommend the albums High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me. I'll never be mad at hearing more Tay though.... Or Sabrina lol.
The centerfold in a magazine is the page that holds everything else together. You can pull out other pages and the magazine (or whatever) will hold, but if you rip out the centerfold, the entire thing falls apart. Essentially, I'm sorry for not making you the thing my life was centered around.
Day two of asking you to react to Holly Macve. I love your reactions to Lana Del Rey and others! You know how to decipher the meaning behind songs and appreciate the melody and beats. I think you would love Holly Macve! You reacted to her song with Lana Del Rey, Suburban House but she's really good. I think you'll especially love her second album since it has hints of Ultraviolence in it but still country, its SUPPPPER good! I hope you give her a check out, enjoy your day!!
i dont understand why you dont do the lyric videos, genius annotations have so many misinterpretations, and manipulate your thoughts. plus, the lyric videos portray the vibe and are well made

IMO this is the most underrated song on Evermore, it's one of my favourites from the album.
