- A fierce competitor renowned for his baseball smarts, Joe Morgan could single-handedly beat opposing teams with his multifaceted skills. A two-time National League MVP in 1975 and '76, he was a terror on the basepaths, topping the 40-steal plateau nine times during his career. His skilled batting eye enabled him to lead the National League in on-base percentage and walks four times each. Morgan also packed considerable power into his compact frame, hitting 449 doubles and 268 home runs.

Ladh 70 he could’ve if he wanted to. He chose to walk, steal bases, hit homers, drive in runs. He could beat you so many ways it’s insane.
@Ladh 70, he played on weak Colts/Astros teams between '64 and 72..going to Cincy in '71. Once he arrived in Cincy, they had to pitch to him because he no longer had expansion team players inhibiting his ability to get good pitches, and he no longer had the homer killing Astrodome to contend with, either.
He was for a second baseman at the time, sensational, for five years he was the best player in baseball, too, with the best batting eye, drawing walks on close pitches that he was usually right about.
He was both a power hitter and a tablesetter for Cincy.
He was a winner.
Three teams, two WORLD TITLES, four league flags, six division pennants, and
double digit better than
.500 seasons with one .500 season('69 with Houston) thrown in.
Hold a seance and ask the late Sparky Anderson from the great beyond, if Morgan was the biggest reason Cincy won those flags, pennants, and two crowns, lol.

Joe, thank you for playing the game. You always were such a joy to watch.

“Little Joe” had a huge heart, and worked hard to be the player he became. His competitive drive was incredible. Paying tribute to the teammates that helped teach him the game was an act of class. Great announcer too: “he tugged on Superman’s cape” when a big hitter drove one out.
I could've listened to Joe talk baseball all night. So modest, intelligent, and thoughtful. Young guys, pay attention. This is what a real man sounds like.
A giant! Why baseball is so great, size is not the issue, but heart and desire. So wonderful that he spoke so beautifully about Nellie Fox.

Joe was such a wonderful player who knew how to win in crucial situations. Great glove, great base stealer, and great teammate.
Joe Morgan reflected everything that I love about MLB. He may have been 5'5" but he was a true giant of the game. The consummate player, teammate and person. Can't wait to take my son to Cooperstown to tell him about the great Joe Morgan.

as a Cubs fan it is hard to say this but Joe Morgan was and still is the person that everyone will compare any second baseman too. he was an extraordinary player and set the bar high for anyone after him! I would have to say that right now Javier Baez has the heart and hustle to catch the big red machines star second baseman... to be continued!

Just feel blessed that Joe took my question in a online chat. I always respected his baseball knowledge so much to the point I still watched just for his commentary after the fact the players I grew up admiring was out the league and my genuine interest had waned significantly. I asked Joe to compare Ichiro to Tony Gwynn as hitters. Talked about how he was in awe when he first saw Ichiro and then said how Ichiro would slap the ball to the opposite side and use his speed and Tony Gwynn was more of a line drive hitter.
Sunday night Baseball has never been the same without Joe Morgan and Jon Miller.
What a class man and a class player. I'm glad to say I didn't see a black man on first base with that gigantic lead. I saw Joe Morgan, who was going to get on base no matter what. He hit ropes regularly. In a favorable count, he could draw the BB. It wasn't about Joe Morgan. It was about the team, about winning and yes, about having a great time doing it. Being a die hard Big Red Machine fan for all those years, it was spectacular watching him range across the infield to make spectacular plays. It was ever hopeful knowing he was coming to the plate next. But most of all, this kid, was able to tear a page out of Joe Morgan's book on how to play the game. And that is thanks to the MAN Joe was. I cannot believe he is gone now. But the historic player, and more importantly the MAN that he was will live on. And i know this from the conversations I was fortunate to have, as a 9-12 little leaguer, laying atop the Cincinnati dugout, at Al Lopez Field, while Joe was on deck, during Spring training each year in Tampa. God bless you Joe Morgan.
Joe misremembered his first big league at bat. It was indeed against the Phillies on 9/21/63. He went 0-1 and Houston lost, 3-4. But in his second game the next day he did indeed drive in the winning run in a 2-1 Colt 45 win.

In my 60 years of watching the game, Joe was the best all around second baseman i have ever seen! For those of you who want to catch a glimpse of how amazingly quick his glove hand was, there’s a background scene in the movie, Brewster McCloud, in which he snags a bullet line drive during a game at the Astrodome.

The baseball Hall of Fame is more difficult to get into than the others, therefore more special. I think Joe understood that as he took his place among the Mays and Musials of America's Pastime.
When the Commissioner Of Baseball Stops Your Team From Getting Vida Blue Then, Your Team Has Got Way Way to much Talent.. The Reds of 75/76 Reds Were Incredible to watch. At times the games I seen unfair As A kid Why? They Beat up on Everyone!! This Brought my to Tears 😭 Greatest 2nd Baseman Ever !! The Man Was Incredible. The 71 reds blew a gasket and stumbled. Joe Morgan was what the Doctor ordered and the 72 Reds got a full tank of gas and the rest is history.

Good he credited Nellie Fox , a great 2nd baseman who was a driving force in Chicago but ignored because his team "White Sox" just went to 1 post season. Fox impact was that he was a little guy who went further with what god gave him . A fantastic hitter

I knew that he was a good RBI man but he scored more runs than he drove in. He hardly ever struck out and had a career on-base percentage of over .400
