As a lawyer, I know they can’t discuss during trial settlement discussions, but I am dying to know why the hospital’s insurance company has NOT settled this matter for many reasons - including the horrific PR generated by the treatment decisions made by a slew of providers who lost sight of the treatment goal. the goal is not to prove a patient is a liar - even if one were to think that about your patient - the goal is to improve a patient’s quality of life. How in the world is a CHILD’s life improved by being in a room for 42 hours with a toilet beyond access?
I’m guessing they wanted to expose the situation?or maybe the settlement offer was bs? Yeah this is inexcusable. I’m sure that pop culture aided in this terrible situation - perhaps the gypsy rose situation AND the OxyContin situation heavily influencing the terrible decisions by hospital staff? Aweful!
I just watched the documentary. The judge’s attitude was disgusting at the end of the documentary. He acted inhuman to not hear 1 single word from this family. This mother fought as hard as she could for her daughter. The hospital and that monster “Dr. Sally Smith” are hideous. I’m praying that this family gets justice. I hope they bury this hospital. Disgusting! Keep up the fight Maya! You and your family are so supported.
I still haven’t recovered from watching the documentary. I watched a week ago and I can’t shake it. The strength of this family is the only part that alleviates how hard it hit me. My daughter is 7. I cannot even FATHOM going thru what this family has. It’s absolutely evil what they did to her. And how many soulless hospital staff sat back and allowed it to happen. Mind boggling.
I started it last week and had to stop. I finished it this morning and the tears would NOT stop! I was just talking to my husband and cried again. This story is unfathomable! I would be in prison because there is not one person that would EVER keep me from my baby! Truly horrific. 💔
Can't even imagine how hard it must have been for poor Maya to be isolated from her mum in such a bad state, while she was battling with her illness. Poor little baby, she was so young. This is just sick, the amount of pain, suffering and irreversible damage the hospital has brought into this family. Not only being separated from you mum as a child battling such a harsh illness, but also losing your mum without an opportunity to say good bye to her. I can't stop crying feeling so much pain for poor girl.
This reminds me of the case here in Australia documented in the book Sarah's Last Wish. A pre-pubescent girl was taken to hospital by her parents. They found a mass in her abdomen straight away just from examining her. They jumped to pregnancy by the father conclusion. Almost straight away they got a negative pregnancy test and found a massive tumour that she wasn't ever going to survive. They still maintained that the family were a danger as child services had already been notified. They medically kidnapped her and forced chemo on her even though she was old enough to sign a document saying that she didn't want chemo as she was going to die anyway and wanted to enjoy the time she had left with her family. Her family had her taken away from them and she wasn't even allowed out in the hospital grounds. Her dying wish was for this to never be allowed to happen to anyone else
This hospital deserves to be exposed for their horrible treatment. This was initially caused by staff not “liking” Maya’s mothers’ demeanor. I hope their dark side gets exposed and this family, as well as the many other family’s, get justice!
They became suspicious because Maya's mother was a nut job who demanded high doses of Ketamine for Maya. She killed herself because she was under a cloud of suspicion. Even Maya felt that if she didn't take the drugs, it would make her mother sad. She wanted her mother to get help.
The documentary was so hard to watch, it certainly made me cry several times. I hope Maya and her family win. If this hadn't happened Mayas mother would still be alive. That hospital should be so ashamed of themselves as well as child services, disgusting.
The 911 call broke me, it had me sobbing and then seeing them cry as well and their lawyers crying, trying to comfort the family. I truly hope that they get justice.
John hopkins, cps, the judge at the time all played a roll in this death as well as trauma in the family. I hope Maya wins. This was so heartbreaking to watch. Keep fighting Maya ❤
the sad part of this is that the judge retired happily, sally smith (cps worker that started it all) retired happily, bedy (cps worker with Maya the whole time) is working at better help the online therapy service. And the hospital will continue to be rich and thrive.
So, a few things:, it’s *role, roll and role are two different words with two different definitions. You also put a space between a comma and the next word as well as put AND when you are finished with your listed examples- like this: John Hopkins, CPS and the judge Acronyms are also capitalized such as CPS ( Children protective services) Your last sentence also needs a comma: Keep fighting, Maya. I know you’ll be angry about these corrections but you’ll never learn if you aren’t corrected and taught. I hope you take this as constructive criticism, it’s important to understand how to correctly use and implement grammar as an adult.
I’ve had this since 1998, and at the time they were four stages of RSD, and I was at the worst at stage four. Exactly what Maia went through. I did the same thing. The thing that I learned about this procedure is that I will never trust American doctors compared to doctors that study from other countries, because they knew exactly what it was and I had to go through 16 doctors to finally find out what I had. I have an over 85% of my body and at times I could be bedridden for 2 to 3 months. There is no relief for me and all I want to do at times is just to die because my body gets so tired of it and it’s like you’re living off 1 foot off the cliff and just stepping out with the other foot.
@@Idonotcommentanymore this is how the doctors work when it comes to this condition. They decided to do a nerve block only to find out that the stair walk is only going to help me with 10% of my body and that is it according to the doctor they can’t do anymore which is a big joke so instead of having 85% of my body in excruciating pain it’s only gonna be 75. Now they told me I have to make a choice. A dorsal column stimulator. My choice is the stimulator could only work for me if I want my arms, hands and fingers to be some sort of relief or my legs and feet with some sort of relief. Now in order for them to permanently put this machine inside of me to help I’m being told Amy 50% success. Three of my doctor says there is never going to be in 50%. for me but may be 15% at the most. So they tell me go and tell them when they ask you and they want to put in this to tell them yeah I’m getting 50% of them success so I could at least get 15% reduction. American doctors don’t care about this condition because they do not make any money off of this condition. even though they’ve made probably close to $5 million off of me. The only doctors that know about things and the ones that really are saving or trying to save my life or the doctors that did not come to American medical schools. All my doctors are either Vietnamese Pakistani and Ukrainian etc. because they studied this in their countries of what I have and there’s a way.
The fact this family, is standing up for themselves and other parents. Who had to deal with the same crap. But didn't have the money or evidence to clear themselves or help them. I watched this with my 14 year old daughter. An i could not imagine what they went through as a loving/caring parent and the patience an mental state every single one of them. Heart breaking! I've heard so many 911 calls but that one got me. That was hard to hold back tears. I felt Maya and her families pain during that call. Oh the heart ache.
I think the part that has shocked me the most about this whole thing was hearing little Kyle crying for his mom during the 911 call 😢 that broke my heart
I watched this documentary the minute I received the reminder. I grew up in Shriner's Children's Hospital from age 5 until I became an adult. Then I was sent to Oregon Health Science University, where I spent MANY, MANY days, weeks, months in hospital. I have Myasthenia Gravis. Watching the TRUE LIVE (recordings) VIDEO and HEARING the recordings of those phone conversations..... We're SO SURREAL!!! It broke my heart!! None of my NURSES or DR.'s were like that.... But SOME PARENTS WERE TOWARDS OTHER CHILDREN and parents. This was back in the mid '70's, around 1973-74 when I started seeing Drs there. I bawled, many times watching this video. Even had to stop and walk away for a bit. Heartbreaking!!! For Maya, 💐 Sweetie, LISTEN TO YOUR HEART, love your choices, AND NEVER GET DEFEATED!! If you can't pick a cup or rag up today... LEAVE IT, YOU WILL LATER IR TOMORROW!! Do not let people bring you down, SOMETIMES, IT JUST TAKES US LONGER... BUT WE WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL!! MY MOTTO.... CAN'T, ISN'T IN MY VOCABULARY WHEN IT COMES TO PHYSICAL OBSTACLES!! ❤

Beata did not actually fit the Munchausen by proxy label and Maya did not improve away from her care (in fact she got worse which the hospital staff then labeled as malingering). I really really hope this family brings down the evil conspiracy of the doctors and social workers who fail the kids who DO need them and harm the families that do not.
The fact the people who claimed that she had it couldn't even name the signs of mbp in court. They barely had any so called cases of it and if you can't name the signs how are you so sure. They weren't even familiar with her condition enough to say the kid was faking despite the fact this disease has plain signs that are easy to see if you know what you are looking at.
@@TheresaHall-vl1bm Oh, they KNOW the signs but deliberately did not recall them on the stand to try to avoid being proven they are guilty of malicious intent. It's an effort by the defense and I hope it backfires.
@@jenmdawg that is possibility. HEART WRENCHING. My reaction listening to this 911 call was almost identical to when I found my 3 year old deceased 6 years ago😭😭😭 Oh Lord Jesus comfort this family 💔
While I don't know all the details, I don't understand how the doctors could think the parents were harming their daughter. Did John Hopkins contact her pediatrician? Just very sad.
I don’t understand the fact that medical professionals 10 years ago, didn’t understand ketamine on humans, yet now it is used on young children to knock them out if they need a bone reset. I was shocked when they told me that that’s what they were doing with my daughter. They shot her up with ketamine reset her bone and woke her up. It was crazy. I hope this family gets everything that they deserve especially with the way that they use this medicine now. Absolutely insane.
And not only did it happened in America but in _several_ western countries. Even in Nordic countries which are the most progressive and particularly strong rule of law and civilized states. But if you've tried to talk about these things, you've been belittled (and often also mocked), saying that healthcare and social workers knows what they're doing and that there must be something wrong with the parents and it's a shame that the officials can't tell the 'truth' because of their duty of confidentiality. Everything is so infinitely simple. That is, for infinitely simple people, i.e. about 80-90 percent of the entire population. But fortunately this trial came, as terrible as it is. After this, a few more people might wake up to all the injustice that is related to the industry. Perhaps. And no, I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist with about 50 years of life experience (and I really have experienced in front of many people, unfortunately), studies, other knowledge acquisition, etc. If the people dealing with this case have any brains and heart at all, they know how to solve this. All the best to the Kowalskis and I am so sorry. And Beata - there is nothing appropriate to say so here's for you 💖🎇 Shine bright dear Beata and I know you will.
Why would you think it happened in another country ? The rest if the world isn't as backwoods as Americans like to think .. some other countries are leaders in medical research and treatments .
The fathers phone call brought me to tears. I hope this family is given the peace they deserve. What a tragedy all around. My heart breaks for them that they lost their mother over this.
Hoping the family gets every penny they’re suing for. What that hospital and everyone involved did is horrific. It’s terrifying for the public that those doctors and nurses and social workers don’t get any consequences for their mistreatment of Maya. Did anyone even lose their job? The system is so unfair. Prayers for the family.
The 911 operator, “tell me why she looks dead” are you kidding me? Are those operators not trained to 1. Don’t interrupt the caller. 2. Don’t ask someone who just found his wife dead, what makes you think she is dead. She was tone deaf for sure! And definitely needs training! Did she not hear the boy crying in the background or hear the desperation in the callers voice…
The fact that one person had the ability to determine that a family could be broken apart is disgusting and scary. Imagine what can happen and has happened to many families. Secondly how does the hospital come in and say they are the reason Maya is better. Come on. I hope the netflix documentary changes how this comes out. Because we all know the power of these hospitals...normally this family would have no hope. For the hospital to take no accountability shows the lack of compassion and aragonce of this medical community. I hope more documentaries come out to at least make these situations more visible so that the hospitals and medical institutions can't hide it anymore.
Beata’s blood is on the hands of staff at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Sally Smith, Child Protective Services and Catherine Beatty. Let’s not forget the judge who forbid Beata from hugging her daughter.

Omg as a person with “invisible” disability this is just- like I said a nightmare! Did this happen same year that all those gypsy rose docs and movies came out? I have tremendous respect for that dad. I simply can’t imagine what this family went through over these years. May God grant them healing . My deepest sympathies. The trauma this family experienced is tremendously heartbreaking…
I want them to go after the social worker next. Truly repugnant what is happening. Let’s talk about this bias Judge! Parties are entitled to expect that their dispute will be heard by a fair and independent court or tribunaL. This judge is not showing impartiality, nor did Judge Howarth who caused the death of Beeta. Are these all on the payroll of the hospital? What happened to Judge H who denied Beeta a hug? Will he be on the stand the degenerate.? .
This family now all has serious trauma on multiple levels. This daughter and son now have to live without a mother who very obviously loved them more than anything. This husband now has to live the rest of his life without his partner. How dare this hospital even attempt to defend themselves in this situation. Investigate that entire institution. Trying to "prove" that a child is lying about a serious medical condition that was ALREADY DOCUMENTED AND DIAGNOSED. Then when she was getting worse in the hospital they still stuck to their guns to try and cover their own necks??? And only released her AFTER her mother took her own life from the overwhelming depression and hopelessness this hospital CREATED WITH THEIR ACTIONS. This poor daughter didn't get to see her mother for months and is only granted freedom after she's gone and it is ENTIRELY TOO LATE. I am absolutely repulsed by this tragic situation and my heart breaks for this family. They deserve justice, restitution, and an unbiased investigation of that entire hospital and all of it's staff. That kind of misconduct runs deep and needs to be exposed.

Notice that the defense explains the pain of Maya and how much she was in pain. Not giving her pain medication isn’t really justified if she’s in that much pain.
How is it considered "reasonable" to take a child away from their parents for 3 months as part of treatment? Parents that were trying to seek care for their child. Surely after 1 month or even 2 the hospital would realised that it wasnt any better being away from the parents.
The documentary is biased. Listen to the defence. The mother was a nut job who killed herself. She killed herself because the hospital was suspicious of her demand for more ketamine for Maya.
Whole case is gut wrenching I can’t imagine feeling as if I need to take my own life to save my child being that desperate & broken feeling as if this was the only way to get my child home
Beata never gained financial or gifts as a result of her daughter's diagnosis. She wasn't trying to gain attention. She just wanted to help her daughter. This is going on everywhere. It's called medical kidnapping.
If it was Munchausen, often the only motivation is attention and control. Beata was angry and demanding of radical treatment of a huge amount of a very strong sedation for Maya. Medical coma was an inappropriate demand. IMO as an RN for forty years, Beata set off multiple red flags. Her daughters confusing set of symptoms, that don’t go together, was another red flag. I’m sorry, but it is true. It needed to be looked at. The mom killing herself after three months of not being with her daughter was another red flag. Why was she not thinking about her daughters welfare at that time?
People go to hospital NOT by choice but because they believe it's the place where one is looked after and taken care of. Not where a child is abducted/kidnapped & alienated from the people she loves the most. I pray that justice is carried out and that NO other families going forward will be subjected to such horror. There are NO winners in this case as Beata cannot be bought back! To know that John Hopkins denied parents their right , carried out character assassination of Beata and making her feel like a criminal! It's makes no difference how many zeros one adds to the amount , life is priceless. For a hospital to deny the parents and that Maya had CRPS and yet took money from the insurance company stating it's CRPS!!Surely this speaks volumes,Why the family is being put through yet another ordeal is beyond belief!!!!!

This is so sad, she lost her mother while she was in the hospital, just because they thought the mother was making her sick. Thwy shouldn't treat ppl like they are criminals beforw they have concrete evidence to show other wise. I feel so bad for the children and jake and miya .. Hope the spelling is right. This hospital is supposed to be one of the beat on the united States, im sorry but i will never donate a penny to them. After seeing this. Im heart broken for this family and friends. Very upsetting to me after I know a stay in the hospital isnt easy to start with. They should be ashamed of their self for all they done to this family. Pay them and leave them alone. Those children should have been with their mother and father. Sending love and prayers for this to work out in their favor.
Maya you are so beautiful, just like your mother. You have an amazing Queen to look up to, and follow after with your children. You probably will never see this but I pray the world be at your feet and you prosper beyond belief. You’ve paid way more than you should have. Your mother suffered more than she should have. It’s DISGUSTING to think she had to give her life, but it is the utmost act she could make heard, selflessness and love.
That 911. I made to make that exact call. Not the garage, the basement. My dad. I want everyone to send a text to someone you haven't reached out to in a while and just say hey. I think you'd be surprised how important it is to know that you're cared about in this world.
This will alter the hospital’s way of practice, and withdrawing the professional’s medical licence’s will not justify the damage they caused. It’s sickening to believe that power, in the wrong hands is a deadly weapon especially the narcissists.
I have EDS aka Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome once diagnosed as CRPS that completely stopped w/ Mast cell stabilizing. My pain management Dr. realizing it was actually MCAS. That poor, poor, poor family. I haven't seen the documentary but I'm afraid I'll be too upset if doing so. 🙏🏻💞
I also have crps and most doctors are not educated and should be! I feel worse for the children that get crps. This was a tragedy and she definitely should win this. With crps doctors and nurses accuse patients of being pain medication seekers and fakers. Truly sad because it is a debilitating illness.
CRPS/Fibro/AMPS/RSD are basically diagnosis of exclusion with limited treatment options, and for the most part (aside from Fibro) aren’t common enough for most providers to be able to stay up to date on. Unfortunately it’s difficult to be ‘educated’ on something when there is such a wide variability in opinions and standard of care and little well validated data.
How dare that attorney try to take all the credit for a Meijer is doing today, especially involving school. Then he tells the jury a little 10 year old, came in there, cussing them out I just don’t believe it.
This is so sad. Ketamine clinics are everywhere for pain & depression. I did a round of treatments last year for fibromyalgia. Really help for the rare flares. I’ve been there where doctors think you’re faking it. Terrible

The hospital staff is very manipulative, trying to bait Maya to see if she is telling the truth. The judge and defense attorneys are a**h***s.
I think this is why the family wanted there day in court
I’m guessing they wanted to expose the situation?or maybe the settlement offer was bs? Yeah this is inexcusable. I’m sure that pop culture aided in this terrible situation - perhaps the gypsy rose situation AND the OxyContin situation heavily influencing the terrible decisions by hospital staff? Aweful!
Maybe the Family didn't want to settle ??
@@bettywillbrowsegood point- I’d want them publicly exposed, as well as sued for damages.
There is no excuse for what that hospital did to this family!
I could not watch it and I've watched some pretty tough watch programming.
I cried while watching it. I pray Maya gets every penny she’s asking for.
Cried while watching it. 😢
I started it last week and had to stop. I finished it this morning and the tears would NOT stop! I was just talking to my husband and cried again. This story is unfathomable! I would be in prison because there is not one person that would EVER keep me from my baby! Truly horrific. 💔
Now, watch the actual court case. It's based on facts, not emotions.
Omg..
Doesn't surprise me. Australia has proven to be a dyspotian dictators dream.
That's absolutely horrific and heart-breaking. Thank you for detailing the name of the book as I am now getting a copy to read.
America is horrible
@@user-03-gsa3the first sentence literally says in Australia
This hospital deserves to be exposed for their horrible treatment. This was initially caused by staff not “liking” Maya’s mothers’ demeanor. I hope their dark side gets exposed and this family, as well as the many other family’s, get justice!
Yeah hospital are for treatment but its more like gimme ur money or receive the bare minimum

The level of sadness on Maya’s face is truly a reflection of this poor baby’s soul. May God heal their hearts and souls

The claims the hospital state, makes me sick.
Shame on this "Hospital".
You also put a space between a comma and the next word as well as put AND when you are finished with your listed examples- like this: John Hopkins, CPS and the judge
Acronyms are also capitalized such as CPS ( Children protective services)
Your last sentence also needs a comma: Keep fighting, Maya.
God Bless you ❤❤
I'm so sorry you live with this every day of your life. Truly. I wish it was different for you. Sending massive hugs 💜
Do they know what causes this?

Where did you get that her mother was mentally I’ll? Her mother was fighting for her daughter
That was heartbreaking. How could she do that...at home...his home? What if he found her stiff hanging in the garage? Oh ya, thoughtful mom, NOT!

I hope this family gets everything that they deserve especially with the way that they use this medicine now. Absolutely insane.

"I blame you"
Whom, specifically, do you blame and why? Thanks.
They wouldn't even let the mom give her daughter a hug in the midst of all of it 😢 cps is so cruel and clearly damaging!!
The fathers phone call brought me to tears. I hope this family is given the peace they deserve. What a tragedy all around. My heart breaks for them that they lost their mother over this.

The 911 call was rough. The questions asked, after he told the dispatcher, she is dead. 😢
Well. She’s trying to determine if someone should give cpr.
They are even trying to claim it not their fault what when they caused the depression in the mother in the first place by taking her child.
Trauma....all over her face. Deeply saddening and for whats happening all around us.
Beata’s blood is on the hands of staff at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Sally Smith, Child Protective Services and Catherine Beatty. Let’s not forget the judge who forbid Beata from hugging her daughter.
This is so painful..as a mum u will do everything for your kids best..I’ve experienced here a Pediatrician doesn’t want to believe me that there’s something wrong with my son..and all the assessments for two years of gathering the reports my son was diagnosed with mild intellectual disability and I told myself I wasn’t wrong all along …Mum knows well with their kids health…and nobody else should doubt it..Rip Beata😢😢
This is just brutal!! Praying there is justice for this family! what this family was put through because “suspicions” is a nightmare! Omg as a person with “invisible” disability this is just- like I said a nightmare! Did this happen same year that all those gypsy rose docs and movies came out? Why were they more concerned about the possibility of fraud then Maya’s actual complaints? Seriously this is just awful! 😳 how terrifying! I hope this family is taken care of for life.

Will he be on the stand the degenerate.? .
Big money permeates and corrupts

Nothing reasonable about taking a child from a mother trying to get help for the kid.
How is it considered "reasonable" to take a child away from their parents for 3 months as part of treatment? Parents that were trying to seek care for their child.
Surely after 1 month or even 2 the hospital would realised that it wasnt any better being away from the parents.

She wanted less pain for her baby
This isn’t “going on everywhere” you dunce

Something is very fishy and hard to believe about this family.
This will alter the hospital’s way of practice, and withdrawing the professional’s medical licence’s will not justify the damage they caused. It’s sickening to believe that power, in the wrong hands is a deadly weapon especially the narcissists.

A bunch of my burnt out “colleagues” started these to get a 9-5 job. You people are so misinformed.
@@RachelFowler-w1das an ER RN I completely agree with you.
Great breakdown. Thank you
What a sad story, the Hospital really hurt that family! It's unbelievable!
CRPS is a huge part of it. They are trained poorly and break apart families this and do no harm podcast have many similarities.
Unless you are giving birth or dying do not ever attend John’s Hopkins hospital- because of what it’s supposed to be versus what it actually is, makes it a vile sinister place full of people who don’t care for your wellbeing.
