I cured my nasal spray addiction by using the spray only on 1 side and let the other side get blocked and then it took days for that side to clear. Once the blocked side cleared over 3 days I then stopped using the spray altogether and let the remaining side get blocked. It took a few days and then both sides were clear! Cured!

I was stuck on it for 2-3 weeks and when my nose started bleeding I got scared but kept using it. I was afraid it would take weeks to be normal again. Your nose was probably bleeding because you were pointing it to the septum and not the away towards the corner of the eye. That causes irritation and nose bleeds. I don’t believe it has to do with addiction.

My grandfather was a nose drop junkie. He worked in a sawmill and became dependent on the old-fashioned Neosynephrine drops, using them for 50+ years. These used to contain pseudoephedrine, which is a chemical precursor to methamphetamine. Addictive much! Pop could get quite aggressive in his demands for people to get his drops for him. He went through a couple of bottles a day. It was pretty hideous, really.

Vicki Parslow Stafford A couple bottles a DAY?! Oh my gosh! I wish a doc had given him a nasal steroid, oral steroid, or showed him how to do the saline and/or steroid taper. (Basically adding a little bit of saline each day until there’s no active addictive substance left and you’re left using mostly if not all just saline).
My dad used it from the 80’s until like 2009. He did the saline taper and occasionally used generic Flonase, mostly when he went to bed. Crazy thing is, he had gotten really sick one day. His friend brought him some medicine. Afrin if I remember correctly. And from that day, he never went a single day without using it. Not a single day. I’d liked to have known exactly how many bottles he went through. It’s a terrible thing, really. I wish people knew what they were getting themselves into.

I was a mess. I got surgery exactly a year ago and finally quit Afrin, but my poor sinuses are still recovering from all that abuse. I was on Afrin for over a decade. Sinus rinsed and two snore strips at night don’t even clear my nose, I did so much damage. Flonase doesn’t help much either. This isn’t to scare anyone about recovery but rather to share my experience and caution against letting it get as bad as I did! Also the surgery really isn’t bad so if that scares you, know it’s not the end of the world.

How I did it was to keep spraying one side (must remember which side) so I can breathe while letting the second side stay congested and weaning off the nasal spray. It takes a couple days but eventually it will clear up. Now, you stop spraying the first side and let it wean off the spray, again it will take some days. Since the second side has already gone off the spray and cleared up, you should be able live without the nasal spray from this point on.

Rhinostat is fantastic! I get addicted to the decongestion sprays regularly whenever I have a cold, this has been going on for most of my life. I have very narrow nasal passages, so can't breath at all when I have a blocked nose. Since coming across Rhinostat I have learnt how to wean myself of it whenever it happens, so worth it.
Also when you get to the end of weaning yourself off it and the nose is a bit stuffy at night, I find that an allergy spray work well.

Kristina Pescinski Here’s a breakdown of really the only effective methods, for anyone interested.
Switching immediately to a steroid based spray, and using it as normal. This works for many, does not work for some. Most people with long term addictions will need 2 sprays in each nostril, 3-4 times a day the first week, opposed to the 2 sprays, once daily like normal. It is VERY IMPORTANT that when you use the steroid spray, you’d don’t sniff in too much after spraying into your nose, as this can cause the spray to go down the back of your throat. You want to get the spray in your nose, open your mouth, and leave it there for ten minutes. No blowing your nose. No sniffing in to much. Try not to swallow a lot. You want it to stay in place.
Saline and/or steroid tapering. This is when you slowly add more saline and/or steroid spray to your addictive spray until there’s no addictive spray and you’re left with just saline and/or steroid spray. This seems more effective for those people who have been using it for very long periods, like 20-30 years, etc. While it takes some time, it offers a valuable method for those with severe, very long term addictions and/or those individuals that just don’t find relief from steroid sprays.
Cold turkey. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this and I don’t think most doctors would either. The person is going to be miserable and the way our brains work, when our breathing is disrupted, we will become hyper focused on it. When this happens, we feel like we can’t breath even more. I know of some people who went cold turkey and used steroid sprays just at night for the first week, as going cold turkey will very much be extremely uncomfortable at night. That being said, you all know yourselves. If you know this is the right method for you, doctors should respect that. I do think it’d be wise for you to have steroid spray (can be purchased as Flonase or Nasacort in the US, over the counter) on hand just in case, and for nighttime. If you’re going to go cold turkey I do suggest utilizing saline, neti pots (please do this safely. Never use tap water or unpurified water), manual methods of forcing your sinuses to drain (though this won’t stop congestion entirely since it’s not caused by mucus, it may clear just enough mucus to help a little bit). This can be done by pushing the tip of your tongue against the indents in the roof of your mouth for 20-30 seconds each, pushing on certain spots on either side of your face, and pushing on a spot above the nose near between the eyes. Also, you can utilize spicy foods, horseradish, ginger, cayenne, etc. cayenne is often effective because it clears your sinuses AND helps inflammation. Which inflammation is what’s causing your nose to be stuffy, NOT mucus.
      I hope this helps someone.

Wow. I never knew there were so many other people with the same problem. I was dependent on it for basically 7 years. I was going thru a $10-12 bottle of Otrivin a week. I knew it wasn’t good but I could not live without it. And working in AC made it even worse. To quit it, I started using only the tiniest squirt (less than a quarter) in only one nostril (always the same one) and I also started flixonase to reduce the mucosal lining swelling and reactivity to allergies. I suffered for a few days the and only used it when I felt like I was going to die but I made it thru. Everything you are saying I can relate to (flipping tables when you can’t find your spray and the happy dance from getting off it). And I can use it every now and then but I can also stop within 3 days. This is really interesting content that not many people talk about but I know there are plenty of people suffering. Oh and I forgot the bit about alternating then chemists I went to so they don’t catch on that I have a problem.

Never use nasal decongestants for more than a couple of days because it causes that rebound effect that will leave you with a stuffy nose constantly, if you find yourself often having a stuffy nose it could be caused by allergies e.g. dust. Nasonex and I think Rhinocourt, are safe to use all the time (but every couple of days usually), and they prevent the stuffy nose from happening in the first place.
Glad you have found a solution Christian! Just want to prevent people from getting addicted to it in the first place 😬 Also beware of certain eye drops like allergy and redness ones, some of those do the same thing to your eyes and can cause rebound effects too! Sea water cured it for me..I’ve been addicted to nasal spray (oxymetazoline) for around 15 years and had never gone a full day without using it until a few years ago I was involved in an incident where I very nearly drowned. I took in so much sea water that when I eventually got to the surface I was throwing up water from my mouth and pink foam was coming from my nose. Something to do with blood from the lungs mixing with salt water. Anyway, the next day I was released from hospital and realised that I hadn’t needed to use my nasal spray. It was about 6 months later that I then felt the need to use the spray again after getting a cold. Before I knew it I was using it every day and have since. I believe the sea water definitely somehow cured my nasal congestion. I have been considering using actual sea water with some sort of (less aggressive) nasal irrigation system but believe it would still need to be quite forceful or maybe the main key is the sea water?..

Addiction is probably not the best word to describe it. The reason it says not to use it for 3-5 days is because your body becomes adapted and used to the dilated (opened up) blood vessels. So if you stop or don't use it, it causes rebound congestion which is like withdrawal congestion so you want to use it again. Sorry my inner pharmacist came out.
Nasal sprays often cause nose bleeds too because they dry up the area and the vessels are fragile so you're meant to give them a break for that reason too.
Glad to know you found something that works for you :)

    • @Lokiidoll
      @Lokiidoll 5 років тому

But, the thing is it does turn into an addiction. I mean on top of the rebound effects. But, the whole rebound effect thing.. is that not exactly one of the reasons why drug addicts become addicted to drugs? Because the come down is so hard that they just keep using to avoid that feeling and so it becomes a cycle? I know, its a weird comparison and not nearly as serious as some addictions. But, nevertheless it can become an addiction just like anything else done in high enough quantity and frequency.

@@Lokiidoll I understand where you're coming from. Without going into it too much it's probably a personal preference that I don't like using the word "addiction" to describe all drug misuse. Just because of the social stigma associated with the word where people tend to assume that if someone becomes drug dependent that it's always psychological and physical dependence where that isn't always the case. Of course for most drugs people commonly associate with "addiction" it is a combination of both but I just don't like to assume. :)

I can’t help with anyone with nasalsprat addiction but I can give you all a tip on sleeping easier.
I had surgery on my nose back in 2011 due to continuous sinus infections. I didn’t use nasal sprays as the nose bleeds where really bad so I went off them after like a week. Anyway, while I waited for surgery I took to sleeping on an incline. It helped to keep the sinuses open at night.
So anyone else out there trying to get off nasal spray who’s having trouble sleeping at night my top is to get a few extra pillows or a wedge pillow and prop yourself up a bit at night. You want to make sure your back and neck are supported while sleeping. Then once you’ve kicked the addiction just remove the extra pillows and go back to sleeping as normal

I've been using nasal spray nearly all my adult life. I have a deviated septum so makes it even more congested for me.
I use Oxymetazoline. Emptied my bedside draw and there were 9 empty bottles in there!
I can't fall asleep when I have a blocked nose either.
It's a vicious circle, you use it for rhinitis and in response it creates rebound rhinitis that's worse than it was originally.
I've gone from having one bottle at all times, to one in my car and one in my living room and bedroom.

I was hooked on Afrin for 14 years. I know how this rolls. It's a really serious problem and people do need help when it comes to quitting this shit. Afrin should be permanently removed from the market. It does so much damage to people. When I quit (10 years ago was the last time I used this shit) I went cold turkey. Something funny happened back then though, I could breathe from one of my nostrils (I didn't do the one nostril at a time thing), so that made it way easier for me.
If you are addicted to this shit, find a way to STOP USING IT, at all costs. It raises your blood pressure constantly and it will drill a hole in your septum, this was said to me by a doctor that told me that I had to quit this ASAP.

It shouldn't be removed just because people dont read the instructions. It says very clearly not to use it more than 3 days. It helps to read the instructions for medication you're using. Not trying to sound like an ass but you could save your own life by just reading a label for less than a minute. Wowza

@@RenatinhoLicioniFilho I've used those sprays and yeah if you overuse them it makes your congestion worse. That was enough for me to stop using. You gotta be a little slow or something when its obvious the spray is making your nose worse and you keep using it for temporary relief. @@tammyrobison2670 Best way to do it is to NOT use it during the day and ONLY use it on one nostril per night. You can switch nostrils each night so that you are only using it on each nostril once every 48 hours. It is the easiest way to recover, I think. I no longer get rebound congestion.

I know I'm a day late and a dollar short here but thanks for putting this video out. I stumbled on it when I was trying to find info about getting off of a 15 year Afrin (Oxymetazoline) nightly use addiction. I ended up ordering the Rhinostat kit and after 26 days, I was off Afrin. My experience was so damn close to yours, even including the insomnia, etc. i opted to use the Neilmed Sinus rinse instead of the Neti pot, but its the same thing really. I still have breathing issues off and on and getting checked out by an ENT doctor to make sure I didn't get myself into the trouble you were worried about. I never had any bleeding really so I'm pretty sure I'm ok and just need more time for shiz to go back to normal.
