    Did you know that Wizardry was huge in Japan that inspired Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. There also Wizardry Gaiden and Wizardry OVA.

    The trick to beating the game is to abuse the hell out of Haman and Mahaman. I had several parties get permakilled in attempts to beat Werdna because Greater Demons kept eating me alive. But when I found out Haman can give you a guaranteed "all enemies die" effect, nullify enemy magic defenses or silence all enemies and can't be resisted, I basically just trained a bunch of characters on level 1 against Murphy's ghosts until I had 6 characters at level 15 or so, each with Haman/Mahaman learned.

    This game still works using dosbox!
    I just got it working on windows 8.1.
    I agree with a lot of what's been said.... the Apple version was by far the toughest...
    They had a 10 year aging penalty if you "lost power".
    Just as bad, the monsters could cast spells when they surprised you.... I lost a pretty high level party on level 5! cutting through the statue of the bear way to get to the lower elevator! (mages surprised me)
    That's usually when you would "lose power". :)
    Sir tech took that feature out in an updated release though.
    This game was not easy, you had to spend time rolling up the characters or you wouldn't last too long.
    That's what made it so good though, it was tough.

    Wizardry and Ultima the two series that turned me into a RPG fan, still play them regularly just wish they would re-release Wizardry 1-8 on a digital store like GOG or Dotemu like EA/Bioware did for Ultima's 1-9,Ultima Underworld 1+2 and Worlds of Ultima: Savage Empire and Martian dreams since my copy of the Wizardry collection is wearing out but sadly the people who own the series now seem more interested in making new games with the Wizardry name then make the old ones available again.

    "Trebor" in the game is Robert Woodhead, one of the two founders of Sirtech. He would go on to found the video distribution company, AnimEigo.

    I think "Wizardry proving grounds of the mad overlord" that's one of the most famous computer game. I've played only the NES version. The good news is that it is possible to play a Wizardry #1 DOS / V, PC-9801 of (in Japanese) and Apple Ⅱ emulation now.
    AppleⅡ Edition is difficult. ;)

    Then, send in a team you don't mind if one or two characters (or all) get wiped to grab the ribbon from Level 4 (since Apple II version is hardest, enemies can actually cast spells if they surprise you).
    Then it's a matter of taking the express elevator and heading to Werdna, having at least two people using Haman any time you encounter a magic resistant enemy like Greater Demons. With a bit of luck, you reach Werdna and then shut him up/blow him away with your remaining Haman charges.

    Nothing was sweeter than finally getting Makanito and hunting creeping coins on level 2 and 3. Makanito perished them all but the trick was to get the spell in before they start breathing..........used to get like 3 or 4000 xp for those beauties.

    @desgagne123 so the way to choose classes is to simply put points in a certain stat to gain a class?

    If you attempt to Tiltowait Greater Demons and such they'll always resist it, but when you level up enough that the level drain doesn't matter, Haman is well worth the price to survive that kind of fight.
    Plus, crank the Apple II emulator speed up to max. With the speed set to the original, I got sick of playing it at the authentic speed by the time my chars hit level 8, pretty boring. ;-;

    • @trifortay
      @trifortay Рік тому

      incorrect enemies have a resist stat for every type of magic it gets hit with I think it's 90% is the max. So no they can be hit by Tiltowait you just have be lucky enough.

    • @BareKnuckleRoo
      @BareKnuckleRoo Рік тому

      @@trifortay I can't remember what the original comment was that I was responding to (no surprise given it was 11 years ago before UA-cam would delete entire comment chains if the top one was deleted), and I probably wasn't familiar enough with enemy stats to know if the resistances were 100% for Greater Demons or merely very high, but the point still applies that Tiltowait is a terrible and unreliable way to deal with threatening enemies that have huge resistance to magic. If you're up against something scary that also causes 90% of your best spells to fizzle harmlessly, the totally unresistable Haman and Mahaman are far, far stronger and more reliable, and Mahaman's healing option also appears to give a guaranteed resurrection option for dead/ashed members. Spending a couple levels is far better than risking having several dead party members or a team wipe.

    • @trifortay
      @trifortay Рік тому

      Ironically though that just gives more incentive to use tiltowait more considering you need something to wipe it out. Mages are the best and worst class in endgame, best because their damage output is absurd. And worst because of their d4 hit die. They will probably have only 50 hp by level 13. But you also gotta think, endgame wouldn't be too difficult if magic just worked all the time. Tiltowait will still be your best friend though, because most likely you won't just be fighting one of them, they will probably be in big group which means it will likely hit a few of them... which in turn will help your melee fighters tremendously. Also I wasn't even expecting a response. 11 years into the future

      @BareKnuckleRoo Рік тому

      @@trifortay Having played pretty much all the versions of Wizardry 1 (the best by far is the PS1 collection), I can tell you that the HP of Mages is 100% irrelevant. You can go Mage -> Fighter/Lord to get Haman (and Tiltowait) spells, and Cleric -> Samurai. Gives you plenty of HP, and 3 Haman spells on a character is plenty for dealing with the run to Werdna. Tiltowait with only 10% odds is absolute crap. Haman with 100% odds of rolling at least 1 of Instant Kill, Silence, or Reduce Magic Defense to 0 means it's guaranteed to always make a difference in a fight. The worst outcome is Reduce Magic Defense on enemies, but that just means a few extra turns you can freely Tiltowait with 100% success after.
      Once you realize Haman actually does work all the time, and you level up to 15-16 so you have a few shots, the endgame is significantly easier. Nothing ends Werdna faster and safer than having 6 party members all cast Haman on turn 1.

      there's only one problem though your max spell points are recalculated and since you are not a mage anymore the SP growth won't come into play which means for each SP circle (or spell point level, idk why it's called circle within the community) you get as many spell points as you have spells which means you'll never have 9 spell points in any given level anymore. ALTHOUGH, in wizardry 5 there is a pool where if you dive all the way down, you can get all spell points up to 9 uses. Also I'm not a fan of the wish spells. They feel very cheap. My favorite game by far is Wizardry 5, so many quests to do and there's actually some fun levels and level 777 is basically hell very fun to delve deep into there. But I digress@@BareKnuckleRoo
