- Erlebt eine beeindruckende Rettungsaktion hoch über den Gipfeln der Guggialp im Lötschental! Am 01.08.2015 um 13:00 Uhr führte ein Helikopter der Air Glaciers eine atemberaubende Mission durch, bei der eine verletzte Eringer-Kuh (Vache d'Hérens) sicher von der Alp ins Tal gebracht wurde.
Dieses bewegende Video zeigt die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Mensch und Maschine, während die Air Glaciers-Experten die verletzte Kuh retten. Trotz der Umstände bleibt das beeindruckende Tier ruhig und gelassen während des Transportvorgangs.

I received quite some comments. I also tried my best to translate the comments that are not in German or English via Google translate. So here some answers on most of your questions:
1. Has the cow been numbed before the helicopter arrived?
No. There was no veterinarian available. And the cow had a serious injury on one of the rear legs. And as there is no street up to this place, the only chance was to evacuate and safe this cow with a helicopter. Please also note that this was a really foggy day. So the helicopter was ordered for 9AM, but arrived at 1PM because of the bad weather condition. So the cow was just really really tired and therefore stayed quite.
2. Did the heli team a good job? Why did they not use the winch?
Yes.A cow from this race (Swiss "Eringer" race") has a weight between 600 and 750 kg. With a winch installed on this type of helictoper, you can only lift ~3 persons (~200 kg). So the only solution was to lift it up with a rope. The winch is anyway usually used to evacuate people, and not animals like cows.
But as you can see in the video, the heli assistant on the ground first had to properly put the carrying frame on the cow. In order to do so, they had to lift the cow up first, install the carrying frame and fly it down to the valley. And around 1PM, they had a really short window with good weather conditions. So they had to hurry up before the fog arrived again.
3. Why did they had to use a helicopter to evacuate it?
There is no street up to this place in the Swiss mountains. Usually, in June or July, the farmers move their cows up to the mountains where they stay all summer long until late September (in Switzerland, we really celebrate this time of the year. I like these events). The cow had a serious injury that could not be treated onsite. So the only possiblity was to get the animal down from the mountains and treat the injury from a real veterinarian.
As you can see: We Swiss people really love our cows :-) A heli aided evacuation like this is quite expensive, but we would do everything in order to safe them.

It's a very special Swiss breed of cow: When they get to the mountains in early June, they fight in order to clarify the hierarchy. And this hierarchy stays until they get back from the mountains in late September. Please also note that this is not a human triggered fight. That's something very natural and common for this breed of cows

Hi, yes a container would have been too heavy. The maximum load for a helicopter like this is around 1'000 kg, depending on the temperature and height of the location. These swiss cows can easily get a weight of several hundred kg. Therefore, this procedure is the only solution.

Hallo David. Eringer Kühe sind die Kampfkühe aus dem Wallis. Das spezielle ist, dass die Weiblichen Tiere die Kämpfe austragen. Wenn es im Sommer auf die Alp geht, dann wird als erstes die Rangordnung ausgetragen, da meist Tiere von verschiedenen Stallungen zusammen kommen. Nachdem die Hierarchie bestimmt worden ist, bleibt diese den ganzen Alpsommer über bestehen. Die Preise kenne ich nicht im Detail. Ich weiss nur, dass eine gesunde Milchkuh in der Schweiz um die 3'000 Franken kostet.

Hi, why do you think that this rescue has been cruelty? The rescue teams are practicing situations like this and from my point of view, they did a great job. The hardest part was to get the cow back on her feets since one of the legs was seriously injured. And since the rope has to be mounted around the cow, it cannot be done when the cow is in a sitting position.

Thank you for your comment. Honestly, I am not sure. All cow rescues that I have seen so far where done with the same procedure as in my video and helicopter rescue teams in Switzerland are practicing this procedure. From my point of view, the cow looked quite relaxed. I could imagine that if she had been blindfolded, she might have panicked due to the noise of the helicopter.

Hallo M.B. Die Rettungsteams in der Schweiz werden auch für Tierrettungen ausgebildet. Ich denke daher, dass die Augen daher absichtlich nicht verbunden wurden. Ich könnte mir nämlich vorstellen, dass das Tier bei verbundenen Augen durch den Lärm des Helis panisch werden könnte.

@@isaacnewton2538Der grösste Teil meiner Abonnenten kommt aus Indien. Ich habe einige Kuhvideos, und diese sind in Indien ja heilig. Daher wird es für viele sehr speziell sein, wenn ein Hubschrauber ausrückt, um eine verletzte Kuh zu bergen. Vor ca. 2 Jahren ist das Video dann über Nacht viral gegangen und die Kommentare sind dann auch in die Höhe geschellt. Ich konnte dann fast stündlich verfolgen, wie die Zuschauerzahlen die erste Million erreicht haben. Irgendwie hatte mich der UA-cam Algorythmus entdeckt. Das war für mich ein sehr spezielles Ereignis, da mein Kanal ja nicht allzu groß ist. Mittlerweile ist das Ganze aber wieder im normalen Bereich.
