I just stumbled on your now archived Reddit post with this video and transcription. Absolutely amazing - thank you! Lotus Blossom has always been one of my all-time favorite Ellington/Strayhorn tunes. If you've not heard it before, I would recommend Ellington's performance of it on his Togo Brava Suite album. One of his very best renditions of this piece, in my opinion - shorter, but absolutely gorgeous nonetheless. Cheers - and thank you again so much!
Thank you for your great transcription! I've heard Duke live play it several times. First time in Leningrad when the band came to Russia I was too young to understand most of the band's music but when Duke played this piece solo at the end of concert it was magical. I've taped it at the following concert, learned it and recorded it years ago in a trio. I've never seen the music to it until now. Fine work!!
Wow -- what a history!!! Also, it's really something that Duke says in his intro " it's about my favorite, possibly." . . . can't get much higher praise than that . . . except for possibly your describing as "magical" his playing it all those years ago in Russia at the end of his concert! Thank you for your comment!!!
hi wonderful work on this beautiful piece. is there any possibility of doing the solo version at the end of the "and his mother called him Bill" album where all the band are packing up? i'd love to learn that version! thanks, alex
fx zecross Thank you! It's made with Sibelius, then I obtain a pdf file with the pages in landscape, then I put the music on play and record the screen while I turn the pages.
thank you ! I will try Sibelius and give you feedback :-) I also love your erroll garner transcription. i hope to find this one one day ;) ua-cam.com/video/tU9YLWLvbmM/v-deo.html . See ya..
Great! It brings back memories from the concert in Malmö, Sweden in Nov 1971, when Duke finished the concert by playing Lotus Blossom. After the concert I was happy to talk to Ben Webster, while he jotted down his signature on a LP cover I brought with me.
