I got an E-M1 mark ii used and it has been great. It is easily the most comfortable camera I've ever held and used. The JPGs from camera are great. Previously I had a Lumix G80. The Olympus is even faster focusing and can track subjects. The in body stabilisation is so good that it's even better than the G80 with dual stabilisation. There is a video from Micro Four nerds about the Olympus that you might find interesting (she's a Lumix user). The Olympus is a great camera and a pleasure to use.
Get it, it's a no brainer with the 12-40 ideally, jpegs are good too. Weathersealing is amazing, I've taken it out in snow pouring rain, it's bombproof.
I recently upgraded to a EM1ii (in 2023); & wow it has blown me away. Had always been a LUMIX guy since back with the GH2 but had to see what the other side of the pond had to offer. The dampened shutter sound is like the sexiest sound ever (don’t tell my wife). You won’t regret it. P.S. the GX7 isn’t going anywhere. Plenty of room for multiple horses in the stable.
Yeah mate, go for it. When I was thinking of switching to M4/3 I bought an original EM-1 dead cheap, and it was enough to convince me. I soon got a new EM-1ii, because there was a great offer on it, and it was a huge step up from the EM-1. It took me a while to get used to the menus after shooting Canon for a decade or so, but I adjusted and it was fine, and the amount of customisation you can do is amazing. I then got the EM-1iii, which was an even bigger step up, and it is now my preferred model, but I still use both of them together. The advances in the OM-1 are nice, but for my current use they don’t justify the price. I just love how they feel in my hand, but I’ve been using Olympus film cameras since the 1970s. I picked up my old Canon FF DSLR the other day and it felt so big and clunky. I’ve bought my LUMIX GX80 with me on this quick trip to Sicily because it is nice and anonymous, but it just doesn’t focus as well as the EM-1’s. I’m not really a video person, but I wouldn’t use the Olympus for video over a LUMIX, but I would always pick it for stills. I guess it comes from their heritage. And you can’t beat that Zuiko glass, even though I’m loving the Leica 9mm f/1.7, and OM have nothing that comes close, yet.
Interestingly I travelled a similar path. When I was considering the move to M43 from my Canon FF DSLR, I purchased an original EM1 with the 14-42 kit. I loved it. I then sold off my Canon gear and picked up an EM1.3 and some great lenses. I often use HR for product work and HHHR for landscape. Brilliant! No regrets and no looking back. Grant, you might want to give strong consideration for the mark III version. There are some great features such as HHHR and Starry Sky as well as the computational ND filters.
Hi Grant, As owner of lots of both Olympus (E-M1,OM-1 before E-M1X and Mark III) and Panasonic (GX9 and S5) gear I think I give you some of my thoughts. As you probably know Olympus is more photo centric and Pani Video. There are far less settings to change for video on Olympus camera's in general. For video the OM-1is currently the most advanced camera with video and the only that does 4k 60fps and 10 bit as far as I know. I owned a mark III and 1X for a while but I think the video a little less detailed in the 4K mode than the OM-1. The menu's can be a bit overwhelming at start (OM-1 has the best menu imo). I think the Panasonic menu's are easier in general. The C-AF mode is more convincing on Olympus in general because of Phase detect AF. Because I never owned a Mark II I can not specifically speak about the computational features of mark II. I personally think the IS does work together with both brands. Not on the same level as dual IS compatible camera's. They do benefit from each other. The reason to choose a newer camera than the mark II is the more advanced face tracking autofocus in Mark III and OM-1. I you want to photograph animals and birds the OM-1 or E-M1X is your choice.
Just get it it’s a great camera and you will not regret it. The feature that I like is , when using vintage lenses you are able to store a list and name the lens / focal length being used. When reviewing at a later date you can easily see which vintage lens you used for the image.
Yes. Pano lens on OM System do not have lens stabilisation. But I use a 100-300mm Pano lens on my OM-5 and the hand-held images are fine for personal use.
yes. this camera is a hidden gem. ive followed the advice of other MFT youtubers and this has quickly become my fav olympus camera. more than my m1x. do it before the hype gets out there and the prices gets jacked up.
Nice video. Just upgraded to the EM1mkii a few months ago and it is pleasantly satisfying. It’s competent, quick, accurate. The only thing that hangs me up sometimes is the power up delay. A bit too slow compared to even some older models cameras. But I think I will hang onto this one for a long time.
I would also research the menus. Don't quote me on that but some cameras have complicated menus. 😅 I think most of the cameras, including the mark 2 have phase detect auto focus, which can be superb for UA-cam. 🤓
The g9 right now is 897 on sale in the USA. Remember the em1 mark ii splits the files into 2mb files. It’s a good camera with amazing build quality. I’d want to try the m1x
The value of the E-M1 Mkii right now is unbelievable. I don't think any camera beats its features and performance to the dollar right now. It's why I'm picking up one this Friday for $350 USD.
thanks for the effort and sharing. i am also looking at a used Oly E-M1mk2 because of value, combo with my GX85 + M43rd lenses and Oly's jpeg engine. Thumbs up.
'Geeky Nerdy Techy' has some great videos on using the Olympus OM-D EM1 M2 for video. It's still an awesome camera and great value for money 2nd hand now. It'll also allow you to pump out some "first impression" and "comparison" videos for your eager subscribers. Just get it!
Just ordered one from MPB for 514 Euros, was really torn between that and the G9. Consider myself just an amateur in the most true sense of the word. Coming from Nikon (D)SLRs (F75, D90, D800) I was looking for something lighter and more compact, as well as rugged. A camera I wouldn't have a half hour internal discussion over whether I should bring it when I go for a walk or not... I could do that with the F75, but nowadays, even the Z-series feels HEAVY. What finally made me go for the Olympus was that I liked the look SOOC better. The Panasonic looks more realistic (?) in a way and the Olympus look somehow different, more artistic(?). I will use most of my photos SOOC as I don't see the point of trying to fix bad technique for hours on end in Darktable and Gimp. I see it more as a lesson to be learned.
The EM1 seems to get good reviews. Never used it. I bought a PEN E-PL6 used on eBay, and I love it. Great jpegs. I use a couple Olympus lenses with my GX-9, as well.
Definitely a great camera. I recently had to make a choice between the EM1 mark II and the EM1X. I went with EM1X for the AI auto focus and better weather sealing and a few other advancements such as the handheld hi res shot. But overall fantastic cameras. Both the em1x and the em1 mk ii. If you get it(which i think you would love it) i hope you create a wonderful relationship with it.
You're not dreaming, dude. I mostly shoot with my EM10mII (also have an EM-1 and 2 OG 4/3 bodies) and I currently shoot JPEG only, no post at all, SOOC files. It's very liberating, my man. Oly JPEGs are STELLAR. Years ago, I shot RAW all the time and spent way too much time f&cking around with raw files in Lightroom. Ugh. Raw has it's place and uses, but I'm a lot happier just shooting JPEG-SOOC. Makes me feel sort of like the film days, and is great for my OCD. Why stress out so much about photography?? It should be fun, and I'm still getting amazing shots!!
Olympus has in body IBIS, which is superb, hand held 2/3sec no problem. The Jpeg,s are the best of any system, Olympus colour,s are superbly rendered. The Pany better for video, but Oly acceptable. A dual card pro camera now at bargain prices, lenses? Spoilt for choice.
Hi Grant, have both em1 M2 and recently G9, last is better for grip for my hands, the oly 12-100mm pro f4 seems light on G9 but front heavy on em1 M2. The EVF a pleasure on G9, can't say the same for em1 M2. More buttons, the third dial and the joystick. L.monochrome.d JPEG on the G9 a pleasure. The IBIS is a Little bit better on em1 M2. Yes you have ti pair same brand of camera and lens ti leverage dual IS but Olympus 12-40mm 2.8 Is not stabilized. Thinking ti sell my Olympus em1 M2, using G9 fot the reason above it's more satisfactory. KR Esse

Reason #6 Durable . I've had mine with me almost everyday since 2017. Got it with the 12-40 pro, a real nice combination.

I think the E-M1 II would be a great buy.
I use my mk2 everyday, it's fantastic.
I get the 12mm 40 mm 2.8 in adorama for 400$ , my question the body wich is better g9 o m1 mark ii
it’s a great lens - Both great cameras too 📷👍
Do it. I’m LUMIX and Olympus, G9, GX9, EM10mk4 & Mk3 and a EM5mk3. I may yet get a EM1 mk2. If I had my favs, it would be the GX9 and The EM5mk3.

Think the dual IS is with Oly 12-100 f4 lens…. Thanks for the video
