    New sub! I graduated in 1987, arguably the apex of the hair metal guitars. #1 on my guitar bucket list is an original Ibanez RG 550 in DY. I believe I saw one hanging behind you far right (Mark is severely salivating). Someday... But, very cool vid and channel! Right on and rock on!

      I graduated in 1988 (well, I was supposed to but it turned into half way through 89).
      That RG550 DY is actually the 20th anniversary edition. As I’m sure you heard in the story I sold the hell out of 550s, specifically the DY but I couldn’t afford one myself.
      I do have a 91 DY Jem! Actually I have 4 Jems, DY, SK, LG, and a floral pattern. I’ll do a video on those some day soon.
      I also have a 91 550 in white that I modded to be the same electronics as a 80s Jem.
      For 80s shredder guitars you are definitely in the right spot. I have a bunch and I’m just getting started.
      Plus there is modern stuff and my charity work with The Squishy Guitar Project, a nonprofit organization that gives guitars to children with rare and terminal diseases.
      I encourage you to look around my page and enjoy the happy memories. It’s great to have someone here that remembers the golden age of shred guitars!
      And thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it and it will help my channel grow and let me make more videos.

      Killer cool man! I can't wait to see more shredder guitars! Yes, I drooled over the anniversary RG 550's as well. I also dig the Genesis Series. I've heard about the Squishy Project thru Brad the guitologist, I've subbed to him for years. I believe I remember seeing you on his channel? Hey, thanks for a great response, that's really cool. I eagerly await more awesome vids. Thanks Rexylab!

      @@supersonicnomad8437 yeah, if it was The Squishy Guitar Project it was me. It was started by a friend of mine revolving around an idea I had about a door her daughter (Squishy) painted. I stumbled across Brad’s contact info and told him I enjoyed his stuff and told him about the project and volunteered to help. Brad has been great about everything and gave me lots of good advice for my channel when I was first staring out.
      There are three playlists on my channel about The Squishy Guitar Project. This autistic kid is getting a guitar, fast tracking a guitar for a boy in 100
      Days isolation, and The Squishy Guitar Project.
      The autistic kid one is very close to my heart. His favorite band played his favorite song on his new guitar before we gave it to him. Then they made him an honorary member of the band. That kid, ironically named Brad told his dad he was no longer afraid of hospitals or doctors because he was a rockstar now and rockstars are not afraid.
      After that I could have died a happy man but all I wanted to do was find another kid!
      We have some big plans for next year with The Squishy Guitar Project and it will be all over my channel. If you hit that notification bell you won’t miss any of it.
      Back to the 80s. I have 2 more Charvels to do, tons of Ibanez, Kramer focus guitars, fender HM strat (technically 90s) and many more. Plus my series on whammy bars called, “ would a Floyd Rose by any other name play as sweet”.
      Lots of stuff coming and 60 videos already up for you to look through.
      I got modern stuff too. A Strandberg Boden is up next.

    The Charvel guitars made from that era are truly timeless. I currently own a 1987 Charvel Model 5 that is priceless to me. I have also owned a Model 4 and a 5fx in the past. The quality of craftmanship is what keeps me coming back. Nothing like it exists today. Congrats on your pick up. Bravo!

      I too have an '87 Model 5 (found in 2004) which had been my Grail axe since '89 when I was a 17-yr old in my first thrash cover band. Came with the Chainsaw Case. The mid boost was fried, but I kept it, the wiring harness and the giant J80s that came original. The JT6 is set, strings intonated, and functions with perfection. The 86/87 MJ Models are absolute masterpieces.
      I currently have a Dimebucker in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck, with oversized HB rings a guy made custom for me. Was fret-leveled last week by a luthier in Houston, and it now plays itself.
      I will be buried with it, King Arthur style.

      I have a bunch that are coming up with vintage Kramer, ibanez, and more. Not to mention custom builds including a strat that will benefit a nonprofit organization that gives guitars to children with rare and terminal diseases. This custom strat is pretty damn amazing if I do say so myself.
      Speaking of the nonprofit it’s called The Squishy Guitar Project. Check out the video titled “this autistic kid finally got his guitar. We shot it on my 51st birthday.

    Great save and what an awesome backstory! I'm the original owner of a 650XL (metal flake black with the toothpaste logo). Over her 33 years, she's only needed a few squirts of deoxit in the pots and batteries. I've installed a "tremel-no" since it's currently my only axe & I'm constantly changing the tuning (the "Jackson-Floyd" can get a little temperamental going from standard to drop-C.) It's a reversible mod so if if the desire to wail on her again returns!

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  2 роки тому +1

      A tremel-no is a great solution if you want to change tunings. So many people try to change tunings on a floating bridge and can never get it back.
      Great guitar you have. They don’t make them like they used to for sure.

      @@REXYLAB Thanks! I wasn’t sure if you’d flame me for it…like adding cylinder deactivation to an LS engine! The “Floyd” bridge lays flat with the body and I can literally change tuning in seconds especially with the micro adjusters. I actually broke the bar on my JT6 back in the day. I was given an Edge bar as a replacement, as that was all I could source back in the late 80s at 17 years old. I found the Edge bar was a tiny bit narrower than the JT6 bar. There was a little bit of play that I had to remedy by putting a sliver of electrical tape on the bar to snug it.
    I have mixed feelings on the JT6. The fine tuners "solved" a problem that didn't really exist. The nut behind the nut created some weirdness. On mine, the B string gets hung on the locking screw on the nut, necessitating having to tune the string sharp before locking. The metal on the bridge string locks wasn't the best and easy to strip. Just my personal observations. YMMV....

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  2 роки тому +1

    A bit of a warning - Do NOT expose 1980s Chavel guitars to the Sun.
    The binding, which perfectly matched the white shark fin inlays when new, will turn green in an instant.
    I bought my Model 6 in 1988 and kept it in mint condition for the next 30+ years. Then I let it set in a room that had sunlight for a few hours... it can't be fixed.

    I remember looking at one of those in the 80s. I couldn't afford one so I ended up buying an Ibanez roadster which I got cheap as the coating had a chip off it near the neck. However as I type this I'm looking at my cream coloured/ Pearl White Charvel model 6 I guess that it is meant to be Pearl White. It also has the JT6 and Jackson pickups. Funnily enough it never came with a trem arm but an Ibanez trem does the job. Like me it has a few scrapes and knocks but it's definitely one of my favourite guitars though I'm not a fan of those pickup switches.

    I collect model series. This guitar although has the trem arm issue appears to be far from abused. I have seen some model series that were truly abused with hacked scallop jobs , hacked pickup routing, hacked kahler to floyd conversions. This is a pretty rare color and having original electronics, even with the original case too. nice guitar

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  2 роки тому +1

      You are 100% correct! It cleaned up very nicely. But if I couldn’t have brought it back to near mint I wouldn’t have got it because of the story from when I was a kid. So why call it abused then? Well, two reasons actually.
      Reason #1- you didn’t see all the restoration I did to it. If you did the video would have been 8 hours long. Everything on this guitar needed to be gone through and tightened up from the tuning machines to the strap button behind the trem. And I mean everything. Plus I polished the hell out of it among other things. I focus on the main thing that was the issue for the video and it was definitely some fool trying to put Floyd parts on a JT6 even though they didn’t fit. (I have truly hammered guitars coming up. So you will definitely get to see hack jobs if you come back).
      Reason #2- I have been told by some pretty successful guitar youtubers that if you don’t make your titles and thumbnails click baitish nobody will watch them. So don’t hate the player, hate the game. I’m just trying to figure out the algorithm like everyone else.
      If you want to see a hammered thing I fixed I did a Jackson custom shop bass from the same year, 1988. That bass actually had serious problems.
      Either way thanks for watching my video and commenting. I have more 80s classics coming up including another Charvel.

    interesting about the whammy. I have a Charvel 475 I believe was the model. I bought it from Focus guitars store back in 90-91 on Long Island. Pretty cool at the time Kevin Moore formally of DT was still working there and told me that a great Charvel had just come into the store. All my favorites played Charvel at some point, so I was sold. It was the coolest Dark greenish black sparkle paint I had seen in a while
    My guitar also had the whammy that had the screw on piece, which I never knew if it was a true Floyd. Love it still have it, but don't play much these days : ( However I still love my 80-90 Metal music. Thx for the video brought back memories for sure

      Very cool, I’m a big fan of Dream Theater! I love the Kevin Moore era.
      What you have came with the Jackson JT590. Basically it was made by Schaller (the people who make the Floyd) in the same plant where the Floyd is made, but it’s not a Floyd.
      Weird, I know!
      Schaller made this whammy bar, not to be confused with the lockmiseter and they would put whoever’s name in it that wanted to pay for it. It is a big upgrade from the JT6 with quality on par with a Floyd, it’s just a little different. It also behaves a little different but works just great.
      I have the very same whammy bar branded Hammer and will be doing a complete tear down and setup on it for my series, “would a Floyd Rose by any other name play as sweet?” I hope you check it out.

    I got a 1988 Model 6 used back in 2002 or so, that guitar will never part with me,its burgundy mist too. I will say though the JT6 fucking sucks, i cant wait to upgrade mine to an OFR. Over the years ive had pick up changes and had a tech fuck the midboost, so i've got seymour duncans on order.
    Havent finished your vid yet, surprised you havent said much about the midboost and the single coils being stacked humbuckers.

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  2 роки тому

      Ah yes, the mid boost is a very cool feature of this guitar. The pickups are also pretty awesome. The reason I didn’t talk about either is because this video is kind of long anyway and if I went through everything it t would be so long nobody would watch the whole thing.
      Essentially I had to choose what to focus on and I felt the fact that the person that sold it to me had no idea there was a difference between a JT6 and a Floyd Rose (to the point where he insisted it was a Floyd Rose regardless of it saying Jackson on it) was the most important thing to focus on. Also the fact that it had Floyd parts on it that didn’t fit was really bad as well. It was kind of like,”I have this high performance part for a Chevy that I’m gonna put on my Ford. The bolt pattern doesn’t line up so I’ll just use duct tape and zip ties”. Basically a cautionary tale of buying something used that has passed through many owners and was internally screwed up.
      About the JT6. If properly set up it is fine, not great but fine. Personally I wanted this guitar all original because of the story about how this guitar in this color played such a roll in my life at 18 years old. This Charvel properly set up and all original is really a joy to play. However, if I could have only one guitar it would be an Ibanez RG550. I like everything about that guitar much more, including the original Ibanez edge and the fact that it is recessed. But when you have as many guitars as I do you start getting nostalgic and want the stuff you never had.
      Were I to swap the JT6 with anything it would be a gotoh 1996. Just like Schaller makes the original Floyd Rose and their own version of the ofr gotoh makes the edge and their version of a double locking vibrato in the 1996. In my opinion it is the best aftermarket upgrade for any double locking vibrato system that can be upgraded with a Floyd.
      Just my opinion.
      Duncan’s are totally a great way to go with any upgrades in pickups so congratulations on that! I’d love to see what you have done with your model 6 so if you have a video of it put it in the comments.
      Lastly, I am about to start a video series on all the different variations of locking vibrato systems I can get my hands on. It will be in-depth and I already have a bunch of them. I hope you subscribe so you don’t miss it.

    beautiful guitar!I wonder how much this guitar is worth now

    • @REXYLAB
      @REXYLAB  2 роки тому

      That is a very good question.
      I certainly overpaid for it because of the color and how good it looked in general. Sadly it took several hundred more to get it where it is now.
      But, as I said in the story the rep said it was the rarest color model 6 they made that year and he wasn’t kidding. Since about 2005 I had been looking for a 1988 burgundy mist Charvel model 6. In that time I only ever saw 4 go up for sale and I thought they were all way too much.
      But if you want something it’s with whatever you are willing to pay. I’m not happy about overpaying for a internally damaged guitar but in the end I feel it was worth it.
      I do have things that are even more rare. Check back or better yet subscribe to see some neat stuff in the future.

      It is always great to meet a fellow guitar aficionado and I by no means know everything about everything. So did they offer fire crackle in 1988, the short answer is… maybe?
      I was a dealer and had their catalogs and price lists in 1988. I did not recall them offering fire crackle, so I looked it up. After finding the old 1988 stuff on line I recognized it as the stuff I had and found no fire crackle as an option.
      However… as someone that dealt with Ibanez a lot I do know that there are lots of ways they did stuff that wasn’t in the catalog and technically doesn’t exist. Plus there is japan only, grey market, prototypes, etc. So, 1988 fire crackle? While I don’t remember it and couldn’t order it for my store it very well could be a thing. I’m just a guitar nerd and don’t have all the answers (even though my girlfriend would tell you I think I do).
      The cool thing is if you have one then it exists. With all the looking I have done online (and all I do is look stuff up about guitars online because I’m a big guitar nerd) I can’t find anything before 89 that had crackle anything by Charvel. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t out there. They could have done it for NAMM or any other reason. They could have only offered it to specific dealers. Or I could just be missing a huge chunk of Charvel history.
      Either way welcome to my channel of obsessive guitar nerdyness. I’m overjoyed to have you and hope you chime in, keep me in check if you see something you know better about, and just celebrate all things guitar.
      Here is a link to the 1988 Charvel catalog I had as a dealer. Just click the cover to look at it.

      I have a 3DR as well! It has a JT6 and the guitar logo. There will be a video on that one too one day.
      As for the brass block, if it fit it would have been a much better thing. That being said I wanted this one all original so I would have probably changed it back.
      But… I kept the brass block and have plenty of guitars with Floyd Rose vibratos that it will fit on.
      One day I’ll figure out where that thing needs to go. And maybe one day I’ll make it to Scotland. I was supposed to go there on business a few years ago and it fell through. I had a couple hundred in pound sterling for years in a drawer.

    I got my hands on a Dean eighty eight In a very similar color a few years back. Remember those? It had an ebanol fingerboard. It was actually kind of awesome. It was an HSS configuration. My buddy asked me to give his kid guitar lessons, so I sold it to her for 100$. Ouch. A couple of years later, I figured she probably gave up on it so I tried to feel out if I could buy it back. Nope. Sold it already.
    That ethanol fretboard. My friends and I had a snarky " what the hell is that?" Laugh about it, but I think it worked really well. Dean eighty eight. Dont see em everyday.
