      If Royal Mail were publicly owned, the government would now be dealing with a letter business in steep decline and a parcel business with many private competitors. Letter delivery may once have been a natural monopoly, but it isn't anymore. Railways, water and electricity distribution are all better candidates for nationalisation before Royal Mail.

      @mnh31113ah I completely disagree it was heading in the right direction making a profit before the Conservatives decided to flog it off for less than it was worth now it's owned by another foreigner that will decimate it and leave it for dead no doubt then having to be propped up by the government to £££s

    At the end there, Darren Jones more or less said the government has two choices, either regulate Royal Mail or just run it itself. So lets just bloody run it ourselves then! Anything other than nationalisation is extra steps and more wasteful, it's cheaper to have our public services in public hands in the long run. Why do we need to overcomplicate things? and why is a Czech billionaire interested in our mail service? The government wants to save money right now, so it needs to stop outsourcing everything and it needs to reverse privatisation of all our utilities, simple really and better for everyone.

      @@mnh31113ah Disagree. Royal Mail is a part of our heritage and besides it is still a natural monopoly. Since there are places in this country, only Royal Mail will deliver to. The small islands like in the Scottish Highlands for example. The Universal Service Obligation, if that goes, the remote parts of Britain will have no mail or parcel service at all. Companies like Amazon and couriers rely on Royal Mail a lot, as they only deliver to where it is profitable themselves. Just because less letters are sent now, doesn't mean we can do without a mail service. It is probably more essential now than ever.

    Royal Mail is not a conventional business it is actually a service that effectively means it has a Act of Parliament of its own its also largely owned by the crown hence the word Royal in the name so the actual Parliament Act will effectively protect it and keep the letters delivery as part of the service that Royal Mail are obliged to offer along with the national network of post offices throughout the nation.

      @alanhat5252 railways are franchised to a private company but the infrastructure is in public ownership so again still govt owned.
      Canals we're privately owned once but have been in uk for so long the govt let them go to ruin. They were only brought back into life by enthusiasts from the 1950s who dug them out and reused them but needed funding to do so so the canal trusts effectively did this to raise money for maintenance but they still come under environment agency govenance so are like a hybrid.
      The canals aren't vital to the running of the nation though. Also where Is the name Royal written on the railways and where is it written on any canal?

    • @britbazza3568
      @britbazza3568 13 днів тому

      @alanhat5252 it still bears the monarchs head on all stamps and has done since the first penny black stamp just as the money notes do so effectively it is still owned by the Crown as is all the money notes in the uk..the money notes aren't owned by Parliament they are assets of the crown.
      As for your claim that the post office isn't controlled by the govt it is actually written unto the Parliament act of 2011 that the govt although actually only own 13% of Post office they retain the legal right over what it can and can't do effectively making Royal Mail a franchise like the Railways are a Francise that is controlled by the govt of the day which answered to the Monarch of the day. After all the Govts full title is His Majesty's Govt. For the Govt to work in the uk the King has to give permission for each Govt to form and each PM has to formally ask him to form a govt before the state opening of Parliament is carried out after each election. The king also is required by law to close the Parliament once every five yrs to elect a new govt so ultimately the Monarchy still runs the UK but through an elected vote by the people for their representation in Westminster effectively making the UK a Constitutional Monarchy with the Monarch sitting at the top of the tree then the Govt then the people.
      Why do you think the armed forces swear allegiance to the King or Queen of the day? Because if the Monarchy decides he can order the armed services to war or to forcibly close Parliament if required ! It is effectively a UK UK safety mechanism to stop a dictatorial pm or govt

      Even that is a bit of a myth. Sure, people weren't sending their own personal letters, but loads of companies were still sending stuff, especially advertising material. I worked there from 2008 up to 2019, and not once did I ever see volume drop. In fact it got heavier, as the parcels piled up and forced everyone into shared van routes.
      As for parcel competitiveness, they just can't cope with how other companies do it with track and trace things. Unlike Amazon they can't cope with the strain of mass next day delivery.
      Posties don't logically have the time to take pictures of parcels being delivered, don't have time to get 100 signatures a day, or to drop them off at neighbours... they've got 700 other houses to deliver mail to as well on a 5 hour duty. I almost laughed when they introduced the idea of also picking up collections from customers on their route too. Management are absolutely clueless as to what the job physically entails

The amount of people that get 3 to 5 letters per day, virtually every single day of the year is astonishing. What information do these people need every single day? I personally only get 1 letter per month and typically I don't even need that. If all these people, typically aged 60+ actually bothered to go digital, then the postal service would die off pretty quickly. Once that boomer generation dies off then post will be dead.
