Only if you do it wrong. Let's see, 'poorer performance', 'cancer', if you don't want to smoke don't, no need to frigthen yourself away from opportunities. What I dislike is dumbasses that smoke (weed or anythin else) simply because they have nothing else to do (I believe it's that lazy psychology that promotes poorer performance not weed, though I assume you believe the very act of smoking is a biproduct of some pathological state of mind to begin with).
Personally, doing well academically has absolutely nothing to do with whether you smoke pot or not, infact smoking itself has promoted my academic life. 5-10min outside in the air looking at the stars while doing research (I could truly think, ideas came to me, new ways of looking at the subject matter, it was brilliant and relaxing even during the most trying times and it still is). You could say cigarettes have nothing to do with that, I could go outside to relax without it surely, but structures and routines are what keep us upright. Weed specifically though, it's lovely to have so long as it's not the city crap (way too much artifical THC and reeks to high heaven, people that smoke that stuff are truly depraved lol, there's a difference between a bag of lush and sweet green and something like crow that you only get to 'mong out').
Anyhow long story short, I believe it's not the weed that affects academic performance, but a person's level of personality/psychological development/discipline. I smoke weed when I can get my hands on it, but it's hardly a slavish desire for it, it's lovely to smoke. Drugs in intelligent hands act to enhance to degrade, many people turn to them to numb their senses (this is enhancing their destination/desire, which is essentially nowhere so they're lazy and unmotivated).
