You (and I ;) ) are using the browser extension [Alby in my case] to kind of store the Private Key, and rely on their technical capacity to be kept in "safe hands". But I was wondering what would be recommended if using several different platforms (eg. Linux, Android and ... iOS) with more "native" clients... [I am using a Password Manager at the moment (KeePassXC) with the password file saved in the Cloud]
Hi John! Great question. I don't think there's a solution for this yet. When I used Damus I had to put in my private key, which isn't ideal. I also wonder how Damus is storing that for me, whether it's local or on their database. I'm not sure.
I don't know too much about nostr at this stage but in crypto generally I back up keys or recovery phrases in the cloud after first encrypting them locally.
I've just learned about this 'Nostr' idea an hour ago or so. First up, there's no way you should trusting any application with your private key, who owns 'Alby'? Then this 'Damus' appears, liked and funded by the same totalitarian scum who run 'Twitter' and your giving these anti-free speech pigs a copy of your private key? Utter madness. As soon as you learn that 'Damus' is funded by high-ranking 'Twitter' employees you ditch it instantly.
A lot of copy paste and savings keys in your device is very risky especially in crypto their are softwares targeting keys on pictures and pdf on your devices
Yes, I believe thats your only answer. To make a new account. I'm not sure migration is possible. Losing your private key would be like losing your email password. Only you can't change it.
Now we just a video dealing with "Why". This seems like a lot of new tech sector stuff these days that is a whole lot of "look its a thing!" and not so much "here's a really useful thing." Is this more than just another Crypto, NFT, Mastadon, Substack, Clubhouse, cult? I am seriously "early adopter'd" out!
@@cryptoha5076 But why? "because censorship" is not an answer to "why." What the fuck do we do with this? What does it do for my life? I hate Twitter, it has no use to me or 95% of the planet. Hell, it doesn't have a use for probably 80% of the people who use it. Almost the entirety of social media is garbage that most people don't like and don't use. It has us trained to fiddle with it for what we're trained to fiddle with but when people stop and think about what they're doing, they don't like it. They don't need it. Will this help me connect with great art in a meaningful non social media way? Will it do that better than what we used to do in the 90's? Will it do that for music and help facilitate vibrant music scenes like doing things in person did in the 90's? I say all this as someone with a pretty deep history in tech and media going back decades. I've been there working through all of it and the last decade is just shit. There is no new interactive paradigm here. This is just more "I vomit my shit into the void of nobody" for what? So much of this shit is just "a look what I did" machine for pseudo tech dorks who don't have souls, so this kind of thing impresses them. "What do you do with it "is answered with "look, we did this."
Update for 2024: I'm now on console.xyz (login with web wallet). Nostr never really scaled to where I hoped it would be. Today I'm building Console, it's built on Matrix.org. Read more here: castig.org/trustless/
Happy to answer any Nostr questions if you have them! Ask me here in the comments.
not sure if nostr has changed a little but i seem to have two public keys and 1 private key ??? not sure which one to copy and paste
i have this warning too on alby??????? >>>>>>
You're currently using an imported or randomly generated Nostr key.
who is providing storage and what are their incentives?
Great explanation 👌
Great video, thank you. How do I sync my machines up?
How do I know that these relays are secure? How do they prevent “man-in-the-middle” attacks?
Great video

Overtime I'm sure there will be better solutions. I already read this week that there is work to secure private keys on a Ledger.

TKS a lot for the excellent video!!
Super useful!
Excellent thank you!
can i change my usename or do i need to start again?
Is Iris open source?
we are so early
When using Iris, is the keypair generated on the client, or the server? Does the server see the private key at any point?

If your private key is compromised, what can you do? If the only way is to make a new account, how can you migrate your previous network?

Would love to use Console with Nostr
pv 🤙
But in order to use that alby extention, I need an account on that service and it only allows new accounts through invitation... :(
Can anyone give me a private invitation, please?

WHy? Because of censorship for instance?
Twitter has just been censored in Brazil, so there's a reason..

Signing in with Twitter isn’t working right now. Pop up flashes and can’t open in it’s own window
Also thank you
Yeah, I think there's a problem with nostr.directory's Twitter API. Twitter apparently upgraded their API recently and it causes some problems.
Well, I pronounce it "nos-turr" anyways.
Everyone does. Except this guy. 😅
I was just banned for life on twitter so here i am.
haha, welcome!
Looks terrible
