Thank you for sharing, that was so good. It took me about 15 minutes to read something about frigatebirds😂, the Island, boobies and whales will take even more. I love this mood you transfer me by your special way! Memories of "hunting" sloths.
You really deserved these dives (so smooth), walks and observations. Everything has its time - take your time - and report to us in your way. The lens is secondary - your tales and excitement are worthy.

The birds, ignoring my childhood movie related panic, were really cool to see and learn about. That said, I could just imagine the birds trying to make the drone regurgitate. The entire island was amazing to see. What a cool experience. Thank you!!

😂 we opted to keep the drone on the ground at this spot. Pretty sure a frigate bird could take it out 🤑

How could anyone not be awed by the bird population on that small isle, the view from the top of the hill, and by hearing the pod of whales several meters away, looking like they're playing. I'm awed and I'm not even there.

You might try putting a tiny amount of baking soda mixed with some stove alcohol in a spritzer or spray bottle. Put the Super Glue on the ends of the belt and spritz on the mixture. It will cause the Super Glue to set up almost instantly.

How cool was that, it was like you had the balcony seats for the whale show. When you see them from the boat, you miss half the show looking from one to another, with a bird's eye view you see it all without missing a thing.. It's always so amazing to see how little the animals react to humans in places like this, I live in the forest, see tracks for all kinds of animals in my yard... but it I take a walk into the woods, I'm lucky to see a squirrel, all the animals fear humans and hide... It's pretty telling seeing the difference in reactions, we humans aren't the best of neighbors in most cases...

New sails look great, bet that feels good. Next time on your radar repair, if needed, put a few small needle and thread stitches along with the glue, before shrink wrapping. Wowza, on your whale encounter.😮❤

So nice to see you guys back in the cruising world where you belong! Those boat to boat shots with Small World were really cool. She's a ketch I'm guessing 40', unless the bowsprit makes her 42', just as loaded up as you guys 😊I'm learning to spot the real cruisers Ha! Four breakdowns in one voyage? Kind of a sailors grand slam. I like the fix you came up with for the radar belt. To expand on that, take a 1.5" piece of any electrical 8 or 10 gauge wire, strip the insulation then untwist the wire. You can now take 4 or 5 individual wire strands and glue them across the seam of your repaired belt. Then cover with shrink wrap. Works well. Frigates and blue bearded boobies! Does it get any better? Yes!! The whale shots, holy cow that's amazing!! Talk about right place right time you guys nailed it. Were they feeding on krill I wonder or was it just play? Great shots. You guys rock. Be well.

Hey Bill and Grace this was a nice video. The Whales were the highlight that was awesome. The birds I'm not a fan as far as I am concerned just another type of sea gull (Rat with wings)
It's nice there is four of you boats sailing together. Hopefully your quick fix on radar Bill holds up. Maybe it's just a quick fix until you cam get the proper belt. -12C here in Toronto this morning.

What an amazing place! The whale show was fantastic to see and hear, must’ve been even better in person.
Frigates are always cool for a bit of company far away from land but I’ll admit I’ve got a softer spot for Blue Footed Boobies, there’s just something very chilled about their whole demeanour.
Yeah, I know that anthropomorphising shouldn’t be a thing, but hey, so what? I like them.
Having made a few thousand O-rings in my career I may be able to offer a tip:
Superglue works best on two uncontaminated fresh cut surfaces that are dead flat. Side cutter don’t produce a clean enough cut really.
The best technique is to mark the O-ring material for length such that you’re removing a piece from both ends.
Lay the material down so it curves naturally into a circle, overlap the ends so the marks line up on a piece of flat clean stainless, then cut them with an X-acto knife, scalpel or razor blade.
Scalpels are best, I find, but an old fashioned double edged razor blade is excellent too.
When you cut don’t saw it, just press straight down for a dead clean cut with no ridges on the cut surfaces.
Then apply the minimum of superglue to wet one surface, more is bad.
Lay the O-ring on the stainless plate to line the ends up in the vertical axis means you’ve only got to worry about lining it all up horizontally, which is easy.
Press the ends together and hold for at least twenty seconds.
Done right you really shouldn’t need the heat shrink. The material your O-ring is made from will be embrittled by the heat you need to use to shrink it.
I’m not 100% sure of exactly which material variant the original is but an option I’d suggest is to order up a length of generic Nitrile O-ring stock material of the same diameter as your OEM one. Enough to make several replacements should be pennies in comparison and I suspect that you’ll find it functions every bit as well but glues together better.
That’s what I’ve used to replace broken drive bands on a fair few radars over the years and had no problems.
Glad to see you make it clear of the Lake of Cortez and back into rather more sensible oceanic variant lumps in the road. 😂
    Cheers and stay safe. 😎👍🍻

You don't ever mention using the center board. (I have the same boat but am selling it because I purchased a Sabre 38 w/ centerboard). Do you use the centerboard very much and in what conditions? Upwind? see your sailing techniques is of interest.

    • @CalicoSkiesSailing
      @CalicoSkiesSailing  9 місяців тому

Yes we use the center board a ton, only when the apparent wind angle is lower 90 degrees. We raise the board proportionally as we head from upwind to reaching. If there isn’t enough leeward pressure the board will bang in the trunk 👍
