When I hear the sounds of kulintang, I feel taken back to my childhood days when our mother taught us how to play it. With those days gone, and so were the artfulness that we had. Nostalgia fills me when I listen to its sounds.
My lola once told me that kulintang is the theraphy for our broken soul when hear it while watching nature unveil a new morning, and its true....

Magandang Tumugtog!
It’s hella true
your lola did not say that, fncking liar
I love this. 🥰
Did you know? Madaming occasions ginagamit ang kulintang. Dati nung time pa ng mga sultanate sa Philippines especially sa Mindanao they use kulintang to communicate to each other kung may banta ba ng kalaban 👍 every beat every rhythm may meaning(words) yan. pag sa ibang isla ang kasama nila they used to play it para magkamustahan, my lolo once told me and know how to play it.
@* every time my grandma hears a wrong tone, she always say "Di pakabal's"- it means wrong pronunciation/wrong grammar, which means every series of beats were used for communication and a wrong tone delivers a wrong message.
@* It's a dying culture. As minor tribes are being assimilated with the modern world, cultures began to fade.
Thank you.
I've never found Kulintang as entertaining as this. Love the joy and passion these young and talented musicians have for their musical craft.

It is a very refreshing sight seing the youth of our land swimming and diving into our culture and art... Mabuhay ang Mindanaoan...
This culture is alive and richly preserved in Datu Piang, Maguindanao, if you want to know more about the "rhythm language" of kulintang, you might consider a visit to that municipality..
y'know, it's kinda sad how most youths today don't recognize this art and culture and get embarrassed about it even tho some people who aren't even part of the culture appreciate it.
Modern Filipino youth: "I wanna be Korean..."
Westerners: "Wow! They have an amazing culture."
We were laughed at by our schoolmates when our dance troupe joined indak-indak in kadayawan here in Davao. But I didn't care coz the tribal music along with the dance is goosebumps, it's so satisfying to dance while representing a whole culture.
*filipino kulintang is boring! we have also kulintang ensemble in indonesia. it's more interesting n dynamic. you can compare it, there's a lot on UA-cam...*

Maguindanao really has one of the most interesting music in Philippine culture
That's not maguindanaoan tone that's maranao and as you can see SA colorful OKIR it's represent as a Maranao.
@@abdullahdirongawan641 I assumed because it was stated that it was a medley of two "Maguindanaon" songs in the description
Yes, proud to be a Maguindanaon.
It is a Maguindanaon, kulintang is originally a Maguindanaon term, not a Marana.
Kulintang is originally from the Maguindanaon tribe. Yes, Okir is originally from the Maranao tribe. But the Okir design was only added to the agong’s table stand for decoration. Way back 15th century, it was only plain table stand. Nevertheless, every tribe has their own beauty and uniqueness from each other.
Missing those moments in our province, in every special occasions theres always kulintang to played.
I grew up in Maguindanao province. I always hear the kulintang in every festivities.❤
When i was young my family used to teach me to play the kulintang but sad to say i didnt learn. Maybe i was too young then around 4-7 years old. Its so relaxing to listen to.
You can learn it now, never too late

In Mindanao we are the same musical instrument whether LUMAD in Davao region, Maguindanao province, Cotabato Region, LANAO region, zamboangan peninsula, BASILAN province, Sulu Province, TAWI2 Province, Palawan in mulbug and Sabah North Borneo. But every ethnic tribes have their own kind of tunes when it played by the musician.

1. I see and hear kulintang and agung being played in the video.
2. The musical ensemble the individuals are in, is called the Kulintang Ensemble. This ensemble is used during large feasts, for entertainment of visiting friends and relatives, and at parades.

Loved watching this. thanks for posting :) These instruments should be way more popular
Sarah Keck i'm glad you loved it. do check out the other kulintang videos from this channel 🙂
As a American, I am VERY upset I have never seen these instruments before!!
though it sounds like each thing is overlapping if u listen to it carefully the rythm and cheography is there and its the sound is pretty gentle and its like explosiveness in the clack and boom sounds our culture is amazing!
Hi I'm from Mindanao this is a traditional kulintang always using when if they have a big event just like Muslim wedding and other occasions also 😊🤗😍🤩
Love it. Your babandir player is a bit slower in keeping the rhythm but still very good overall. The lady on debakan and the guy on gandingan were 🤩
Taga saan Po kayu

Maguindanaon music.....lovely
0:13 in Java(indonesia) we call it bonang 😀
I am confused why our musical instruments are similar, whether it is due to the influence of the Majapahit or Srivijaya kingdoms 😕
yeah! these kinds of bossed gongs are in a lot of places in south east Asia. (like the talempong of Minangkabau, the bonang of Indonesia, kong wong in Thailand, etc. etc.) but of course, all of them differ in playing style.
2:27 perhaps this instrument (gandingan) is our version of Indonesia's kempul. perhaps some day it would be nice to collaborate together with all bossed gong cultures of south east Asia!
@@TheHaroldAndre Even the name is similar to Java's Gending! Man, our cultures are really similar, aren't they?
@Moon at work Wasn't Manila from the Tondo Empire?
Our ancestors are cousins...
@@TheHaroldAndre is it kulintang having more similarities with Minangkabau talempong from playing style and the rythm? Are they have common share history? Hehe
I am so glad I am discovering this! I love it!

Hi I was curious if there was anywhere I could learn this other than having to go to school, as I don’t live in the Philippines. I have a kulintang set and would like to learn the phrases and songs of more modern kulintang playing
Hi, I kindly ask permission to use this as background music for our video presentation. I would gladly put credits at the end of our presentation. Thank you

I played Babandir for my Filipino Cultural Night!
its so amazing
Ito yung music yung parang sa Raya and the Last Dragon! Galing! 👏

Ciao! Hello. I'm fairly new to your channel. I am watching you from italy. I recently asked my sister to purchased a set of kulintang from the Philippines and shipped it here in Italy. Having biracial children, i want to expose them to filipino culture and using your videos to inspire them to dance and to play kulintang. But I noticed that the pot gongs that I bought have some tiny holes, I think its how it was made. Will it effect the sounds quality? If so, how can I fix it? Thank you!
that's amazing! please do check out my other videos and most especially this one (ua-cam.com/video/7b7iDVjvxPs/v-deo.html) so they'd have a basic understanding how kulintang music [Maguindanaon-style specifically in this video's case] works. Often times, people purchase kulintang and try to play western music immediately (like arranging gongs in diatonic scale) which is actually my first experience as a 15 year old 😂ages ago.
regarding the holes. how large are they? if they are small likes pores on the skin, this is normal and won't affect the sound as much. You don't have to worry about it... i'de say only be alarmed if you start to hear a disturbing buzzing sound.
all the best! i hope to see your children's videos one day!
This is nice! May I use this piece as our background music for our variety show?
Hi Harold! Is it okay to use the audio? Asking permission to use the audio during an event for the BARMM. Thank you!
