  • Have you ever wondered how to sort 6061 and 6063 Aluminums? In this video Alloy Geek teaches you how to sort them, how these aluminum alloys are chemically difference, what their differences in properties are, and which metal analyzer to use to sort them!
I prefer handheld LIBS metal analyzers over handheld XRF guns when sorting aluminums. If you're on the fence about one type of analyzer vs the other, please reach out. I can help.

Hi! Thanks for the informative video! A question in Aluminium recycling: would the process of melting and casting of sorted scrap made of Alloy 6061 or 6063, affect alloy composition? resulting in different alloy and requiring additives (magnesium, silicon, Cu...)?

This can depend on a lot of factors. In short, melting properly sorted metals like a batch of only 6061 where you have verified every single piece of 6061 as the correct alloy will yield a good melt of 6061, so long as you do not mix it or dwell it with anything else. Some factors that could cause an off chemistry mix: dirty furnace lining, dirty ladle lining, improper scrap sorting, the list goes on. However, I can tell you from experience that most important part of the entire process is what you put in the furnace to begin with.

Crazy that such a small amount of Cu can cause a meaningful reduction in corrosion resistance.
