I’m sorry for your loss My grandmother passed away when I was about 10 years old From the time I was about three years old up until I was 10 my grandmother and I would have a lengthy phone conversation every Sunday morning. She would ask about how I was doing in school and I will tell her about positive things that were happening at school as well as the negative things that may of been happening at the time I really enjoyed those weekly phone conversation with my grandmother Then on the Sunday that she died, my uncle called me, which was rare at the time. He told us “we think she’s dying I didn’t know what to think of that because I was so young this was the first family member that I have lost that I can remember I started crying and said “Mom, we have to go see grandma. we just have to“ My mom totally agreed and was lucky enough to have found a flight that same day. We quickly packed up our stuff and just like that we were on the airplane to see grandma. Once we got to the home where my grandma was staying, another one of my family members rushed to the car, picked me up and rushed me inside the house just as my grandmother was taking her last breath I miss my grandmother so much But I know she lives on in my heart

On Monday-Thursday, could you allow the students to clean their desks off before placing the chairs on top. Purchased disinfectant wipes would work. Or you could save money and DIY a disinfectant and put it spray bottles and give reusable terry cloths. Deepest sympathy for your loss.

My friend...you are such a wonderful teacher and amazing human being. We've all had challenging weeks and you pulled through your challenges amazingly. You are an inspiration. I want you to take a moment to pause and give yourself grace. You've got this. In the middle of all those challenges you still planned wonderful, engaging lessons to meet the needs of all of your students. I love you, love everything you do and who you are. I'm thankful for you! You and your family are still in my thoughts and prayers after your loss. Sending you a great big hug and I hope you have a restful Thanksgiving week.
Hi, I'm Jayde a teacher from OZ and I loved hearing about your new ideas for your classes for a new grading term. I was thinking about your seating issues and thought that maybe you can involve your students in keeping the class tidy by wiping their own desks before they pop the chairs up or in the morning when they come into class?? It would keep them responsible for their own space and can become apart of a morning or afternoon routine.

Actually, I feel like that is less safe because the chairs are up higher and are less stable if they get bumped into. Plus, the chair legs barely fit on the width of the desk and would therefore be more likely to fall off.
"I need Thanksgiving break like something terrible" girl no truer words have been spoken!! I am so sorry for your loss though, it's incredibly hard to lose family but especially around the holidays...but I do think it's good to be able to be around family, to be able to share those memories and remember the good times.

In my state the students do not learn standard algorithm until 6th grade, so I teach partial quotients in 5th as well. For the kids that really struggle with their facts, I teach them to make groups (or multiply) by either 1000, 100, 10, or 1 until they are left with zero or a remainder smaller than the divisor. I have found great success with it among my struggling math students.
Hi Michelle!! I am super sorry to hear about your grandfather. I lost my dad in January and 9 days later we lost my mother-in-law. We had to travel from Savannah, GA to northern Indiana with no notice AND bring our German Shepherd and Pit Bull along. There is nothing that prepares you for something like that, and it is such an amazing blessing to work in a place that understands and is supportive. I’m so glad you’re in the school you are!!! It’s been a huge motivating factor for me in trying to maintain positivity in my own life and work. I enjoy my job, and I love a handful of the people I get to work with. However, my manager is a single, middle-aged woman that apparently hates other women. It KILLS me to be around someone like that when my central focus has always been to uplift and encourage my fellow ladies, ESPECIALLY in an industry that is ALL. MEN. When things get bad, I try to remind myself: I am the thermostat not the thermometer! I can’t change her stance or opinion, but I can be my best self and not let her negativity ruin my day or distract me from why I’m really there, which is to help my customers who I LOVE!! Thank you for the weekly motivation!! You are an amazing example to us all. Lots of love and happy vibes to you!!!

My best wishes to you and your family. I fill a bucket with soap and water. The students get a microfiber cloth and clean their desk and chair. After the clean they place their chair on the desk and place the towel on top of the chair to dry overnight. About every two weeks I bring the microfiber towels home and wash them. The students enjoy keeping their desk and chair clean. It is also very inexpensive after you buy the towels.
That's a great idea! Unfortunately I do not have the time for my students to do that since they only have a few minutes when they come back to homeroom before they are dismissed. Our schedule is very tight since our students switch classes.
Could you do it at the end of the day? We use Clorox or Lysol wipes, and sometimes Mr. Clean with Gain and paper towels. I've had them share a wipe or paper towel with the person next to them or across from them. That's part of my dismissal routine. @@PocketfulofPrimary

Hey Michelle, I am also a 4th grade teacher in Nashville, TN. I was curious about the Stem Block Rocks you posted on an earlier video. Have you used them this year? I am sorry for your loss. I used to teach 4th, self contained. Now I teach 1st. Like you, I coach Girls on the Run. What time do you get to work? I try to get there at 6:45 when the building opens. I leave most days at 6:30pm. Go girl!
Is the multiplication fast facts with the gray 0's on your TPT? I think it would be helpful to my students too and would be interested in purchasing it.
What in the world is that math chart? Do we not do the normal how many 4's go into 9. Ok put two on top. Subtract 9 and 8. Equals 1. No 4's go into 1 so bring down the three. 4 goes into 13 three times. Thats 12. 13-12=1. Won't go into one so bring down the 2. 12/4=3. 12-12=0. And your done... that seems so difficult. Common core wasn't around when i was learning this. I just caught the tail end of it.
What you just described is the standard algorithm which is taught in 5th grade. While it is efficient, it does not lead to a deeper understanding of place value and division. Partial Quotients really isn't difficult if you have a deep understanding of math. Common Core helps produce better conceptual understanding.
Veterans Day in most parts of the Commonwealth is called Remembrance Sunday or Armistice Day. They're are plenty of books about that; a lot of them do mention the Poppy, which is what we wear on shirts/coats etc to show our support [.They are made by the Royal British legion] {Poppys are one of the first flowers to grow in tough ground and many grew in Flanders Field after WW1 and are a symbol of remembrance.}If you google 'kids books for Remembrance Sunday' plenty of books come up.
Hi Michelle! The teacher vs. student scoreboard is part of whole brain teaching. You can set up an additional scoreboard (whiteboard or punchcard, whatever you want) to keep track of class wins and when it is time to level up. The idea behind it is that you are vague about the reward and do not actually give any rewards out, thus helping them be more in tune with their intrinsic motivation. Except, I suppose even seeing the tally marks could be considered a reward, so... 🤷🏼♀️ 😊 wholebrainteaching.com/intermediate/scoreboard/
for the future, i would update your partial quotient note sheet where you are adding the numbers along the side. i would have them line up with correct place value! love your videos(:
PuttingFourthEffort I like my notes sheet the way it is. My students end up adding the partial quotients mentally anyway. If they need to, they write a separate addition algorithm.
'The day the crayons quit' is one of my absolute favourites. My little girl loves it too, especially Peach Crayon 😊
That's a very good one
My 5 year old cousin has that book and I read it to her! It is a very good book

So sorry about your grandpa! 😢
I teach in South Africa and we teach the partial quotients method in grade 6. We teach it alongside the long division method that you've described.

So sorry about your grandfather......my district had 2 snow days last week.......and I am still tired.
Chelsey Jacqueline For us, that is our Memorial Day which is in the spring. Poppy flowers are used during Memorial Day, not Veteran’s Day.
I am so sorry for your loss. God bless you and your family during this time.
I'm so sorry for your loss michelle
Sorry for your loss. I think I may change the room up on Wednesday before break bc I think I need some. change
Thank you so much for your kindness! ❤️Yes... change is always great and the students usually respond well to it!
