Hello Emma! Thank you for the video. Merry Christmas! З Різдвом! I live in Kyiv, Ukraine and we celebrate Christmas on January 7 according to the Julian calendar. We also have an official day off on December, 25 for those who celebrate it then :) This is a very big and important family holiday in Ukraine. You can celebrate New Year with your friends, but you will always be home for Christmas. Traditionally, you sit at the festive table in the evening of January 6 when the first star appears in the sky (the Christ is born). You put 12 dishes on the table (12 apostles). We put hay in the center and place a big bowl with "kutia" on it - a special cereal dish that we cook for Christmas only. It's surrounded with apples. In each corner of the table, you should put a clove of garlic to protect yourself from evil spirits. You light up the candles and you have to eat a few spoons of kutia first, and then you move to the rest of the dishes. You also have to put a small mug of kutia covered with a piece of bread on the windowsill until the next morning, so that your deceased relatives will see and "come" eat with you. We also exchange gifts for Christmas, but we don't have that type of games in my family. We sing traditional Christmas songs, koliadky. On Christmas eve, you say "Khrystos sya rozhdaye" (Christ is born) and reply "Slavimo yoho" (Glory to him). In the morning, the 7th of January, we say 'Z Rizdvom!' (Merry Christmas) and greet each other saying "Khrystos narodyvsya" (Christ was born) - "Slavimo yoho". When I was a child, I lived in a small town and we went caroling on January 8. And neighbors usually gave us pocket money and sweets. I'm sure you heard the world famous Ukrainian song "Carol of the Bells" which is originally named Schedryk and is not a Christmas song, koliadka, but an old style New Year song - schedrivka :) Did you know that we celebrate the old-style New Year on the 13-14th of January? =) This is the time when we sing schedrivky. Of course, now this song, just like a lot of other great hits, is listened to and sang during the entire festive time worldwide. Besides, on January 7 we go to visit our relatives or invite them to be our guests. We also go to the cemetery to put a glass of kutia and some sweets on the tombs of our deceased relatives. Sorry for the long read :) Best wishes to you and your family! Merry Christmas!
@Оксана Алексеевна Such an interesting read about your country and traditions. I was wondering if the stories about the fake spiders and webs decorating the Christmas Tree in the Ukraine is true?
Hi Emma. I am from Colombia and I really like to celebrate Christmas because the main reason for this is to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, as you say, the Christmas in Australia and other countries is just a cultural celebration to buy and give some gifts. It´s not bad, but sincerely the word "Christmas" comes from Christ, therefore the main reason for Christmas has been and should continue being to celebrate and honour Jesus Christ for coming to this world to restore the relationship between God and us as humans. So I celebrate Christmas because Jesus is alive and God´s not dead. God bless you and I wish you a Merry Christmas !!! Emma !!!
It's true. Christmas is more of a cultural clebration in Australia. But there are still many people here who celebrate religiously too. My best wishes to you and your family as you celebrate this special day, Julian
I'm from México and here se celebrate the birth Jesús the son of GOD 😇😇😇 it's a good thing because this celebration reminds us that we should behave very well !!!
Hi Julian, I respect all religion, but have a big mistake about celebrate Christmas. Cause Jesus Christ wasn't born in December 25th. In the bible doesn't talked what date that his birth. Although some evidence suggests that his birth may have occurred in the spring (why would shepherds be herding in the middle of winter?). If you looking for in the histories u can see that in the past was celebrate the winter solstice in December 25th, but the pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival. unhappy many people celebrate the christmas thinking is Christ's birth but is a big lying!!!
The Christmas Eve arrived and in Romania we celebrate it by getting the dearest ones all together , listening to carols and receiving kids that sing carols for the whole neighborhood. It is a heavy snow this year so we all enjoy staying out in the snow to fight with some soft snow balls and walk through the town as it is amazingly decorated with lights and the air is filled with cookies...immm Merry Christmas everyone! Emma.... I hope Kris Kringle will leave under the Christmas tree for you and all the online students happiness and health!
Hi Emma I'm from north east India. I feel good to watch your video it teach me many vocabs and its sounds relating to this festival . We are Christian and this is our main festival. And wish you a merry Christmas. May God bless you.i
Hi Emma, I am Judit from Hungary. We celebrate Christmas also. Usually my mother goes to church but I don't. My brother visit us with his wife and children for a few days after Christmas Day. We give gifts to each other and have meals together. I am thankful for this video even though I have just seen it when I wanted to quit using the computer. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019 ! Emma, wish you and your family great health, great happiness and great success in 2019. Hope you keep on doing useful videos to teach English for all people on the world
Hey Johnny!! Thank you sooooo much! I wish you the very best for the new year - and of course, I will keep making lessons here on UA-cam! It is a great privilege! 💝
Merry Christmas Emma. You're not only an interesting English teacher, but you're also a beautiful English tutor. I enjoy listening to you. Your English knowledge is great.
Hi Emma, thanks a lot for your videos. Especially for that extra that you added in the end. So useful! Btw: today is the Christmas eve for orthodox christians. So merry Christmas to all people who will celebrate on 7th of January. I'm going to catch up with my family and enjoy a bottle of wine with caviar and other delicious food.
HI Emma: I am writing to you from Bermuda, a tiny island in Atlantic Ocean. Firstly, I am going to celebrate my Christmas attending the midnight mass. I thanks God for blessings me throughout the year 2018 and hopefully for giving me the year 2019. Secondly, When I come home from the mass, I prepare special meals for my family and friends. Basically, I cook local dishes such as cassava pie, roast turkey, roast ham, bread stuffing and meanced pies. I also make some Christmas drinks such as eggnog and a special alcoholic drink. The special alcoholic drink is for my friends who are scrooge. When they drink my special drink, automatically they will be filled with Christmas spirit and began to sing Christmas songs. After the big Christmas lunch, some of my family members, friends and I attend a Christmas program that is organized by the different communities in Bermuda. Talented local artists such as singers, dancers and musicians will be participating in the program and they will showcase their talents to their audience. Kris Kringle will appear with his big belly, white mustache and big hat during the program and give gifts to the children who attend the program. Finally, after the program, my friend and I will head to a bar called Dog House. If you like to attend the party, sure the more the merrier! I wish you and your family Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!
mmmEnglish Yes of course, I love this end of year period with all these green, blue, red lights 😉 little bit cold but always a fantastic moment with my family here in Paris 😁 And you, do you spend good time?
Hello Emma, My school education was from a catholic school back in India. During school times we used to decorate our classroom rooms and share food among fellow classmates. The fun part was each classroom used to be ranked based on decoration. At the end of visiting each class, our school principal announces the classroom ranked first place among whole school. The more the merrier! First time hearing that expression, thanks a lot Emma! I am truly learning a lot from you! In Namibia most of us celebrate Christmas at villages. On Christmas Eve, we slaughter a goat, prepare the food and decorate the house. We cut some branches from the jackal berry tree. We put a small branch at every entrance of each hut/room in the house, the big branch is put at the reception area as a symbol of a Christmas tree. In the evening, we go to church then we come home and have a feast. We sing spiritual songs and elders tell children the Christmas stories. On Christmas Day, we go to church(with new clothes) come back home and continue the Christmas party with family, friends and neighbours till the family day. Kids at the village know little about Santa(Father Christmas) and I also learnt about him when I was already grown hence we skip his part.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023! Emma, wish you and your family great health, great happiness and great success in 2023. Hope you keep on doing useful videos to teach English for all people on the world
Hi, Emma! I'm Sangha from S.Korea. There are many Christians here so they celebrate Christmas at church. But rest of the people, it's just a holiday. You can feel Christmas vibe in downtown of the city but usually couples enjoy it. Other people just stay home and watch the film 'Home alone' or 'Harry Potter'. And some people who are solo might be tortured from loneliness and crying at home(maybe I will be one of them😂). So Chistmas in Korea is like a couples day lol. I was born in Africa. Angola was a Portuguese colony back then. The family meal was a looooong dinner on Christmas Eve. My grandparents hosted. Dressed in shorts and t-shirts us kids would leave the table after dinner and go to the balcony to call for Santa. We would shout his name loud afraid we wouldn't be heard. In the meantime, adults would leave all the presents around the Christmas tree. After an interminable wait, we would be called to open presents. The expectation and disappointment sometimes. Anyway, I miss those days with my family around. It's been more than 50 years.
Love you Emma, unfortunately people have taking advantage of Christmas and replace it with wrapping up base gift as a present, real gift to know our saviour Jesus Christ was born and presented with a dear gift.👍❤
There are Kangaroos made out of Christmas baubles in a park on my way to work. Every morning, it reminds me of how you Australians can be the sweetest people. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you :)
Hello Emma, greetings from The Czech Republic. Our traditional meal for dinner on 24th December is a carp with mayonnaise-vegetable salad. For those, who don't eat fish, there is a chop (schnitzel) :-) Thanks for your creation and have a lot of success in 2019!!
Hey, is the tradition about the unmarried women in your country throwing shoes over their shoulders true? If so, why is it done and how did the tradition begin?
Hello my dearest respectful Teacher, I think this lesson is awesome, just I love it, I enjoying it, as a teacher you give us a better lesson, for our best day, and for the good life. So, thanks a lot for all, but I always greateful to you for your best, tricky English lessons.

Hi Emma! I'm from Poland. We had on the Christmas twelve dishes, for example: dumplings, borscht, rice with mushrooms, cabbage with beans. At the evening go Santa Claus and at the midnight we go to the church. Merry Christmas!
We celebrate Christmas in Russia on the 7th of January. Its an Orthodox tradition. But the most significant holliday in my country is the New Year! We lay the table with yummy dishes and spend this wonderful time with our family, relatives and closest fruends!
Though i am not a Christian but i do love to celebrate Christmas it's a lovely festival what i like most about Christmas is that it celebrated in winter
Above all thank you for your nice and useful lessons! I'll go skiing on the Swiss mountains and there will be some time also for celebrations with friend and family. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, dear Emma!
Well. Hi Emma this is Ratul from Bangladesh in Asian subcontinent. We won't get any Christmas like you. We get our religious festivals as an example EID UL FITAR & EIDUL AZHA. We get Eid UL FITAR after keeping one month's fasting & we get Eid UL AZHA after celebrating Eid UL FITAR maybe about 3 months after. When Eid day comes we always like to buy various types of sweets and we also like to eat different types of delicious food. Such as beriany, beef, chicken, fish, mutton hand made sweets and so on. But when we go for a hangout especially with friends we like to eat in a restaurant like chicken chicken curry various types of fast food. Especially inside my home my parents like to eat our traditional foods like hilsa fish and various types of smashed fish and potatoes. Really I enjoy this day when it comes. It's also a religious function so we use to pray the salat at 8 am that's the way I can celebrate my religious function in a traditional way I
Hey Emma, for the first time I'll be celebrating the holidays in Taiwan with my family this year. We're not really into the Christmas celebration, but we're thrilled to see all the Christmas tree and decorations bring put up everywhere we go! Most importantly we feel the Christmas vibes and Christmas ambience! Emma, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 😊😄😄😄
Hello dear teacher. My family and I are celebrating Christmas Eve having dinner together and also giving some presents specially to the children at midnight. One of us, dressed as Santa, comes into the room with a bag full of presents. They have a label so Santa gives them to each one. I must admit that it s so exciting for the children and also the elders jaja. But we don t forget that this day we celebrate Jesús birth and this is so important for Christian people. Well, lots of kisses for my dear teacher and I wish you Merry Christmas from Buenos Aires Argentina. 💝😘💖🎁✨
Hello, dear Emma. I am from Azerbaijan, but I live in Russia. And the New Year is the most favorite holiday here. Thanks for the great video. You are the best English teacher.
Hi Emma, usually in France, at this time of year, we celebrate Jesus Christ birth. Christmas eve is a really nice moment with family, eating a veeeeeery long and quintessential meal (turkey with chestnuts and Christmas log, awesome wins and champagne) in front of the Christmas tree next to fire place (just be aware the Christmas tree is not burning!!!). We also make a family Kris Kringle! The night is almost the longest one of the year (winter time). But this year is a bite special, because like you, we stay at home, waiting for the birth of our first baby!!!:-) My wife is pregnant and finally, my family will join us to spend a part of the holidays. Huge thanks for your lesson and we wish a very merry Christmas! Sebastien
What a joyous time of the year it is for you and your family, congratulations Sebastian!! I wish you all the best with your first child and hope you have a wonderful Christmas 💕💕
In the Philippines, generally, Christmas is celebrated as religious rites, commemorating the birth of Christ. The celebration was express by exhibiting Christmas lantern, Christmas lights and trees, and Christmas parties, highlighted by raffles, gift giving, eating and drinking.
*Hi Emma!* *Happy Christmas* our home is near to the charch. We listen to their amazing songs and prayers in the church, we are also enjoy a lot and we are also participate in the festival yeah it's amazing experience and thank you💟😊.
Hi Emma, I´m Juan from Spain and first I wish you and your family a very very happy Christmas. This is my first conversation in English. I´m studying English from two years and I folow you from a year more or less. I think you´re the best coach that I followed in Internet and I hope can folow you very time. Thanks for being there
Emma, thanks a billion! If you don't mind,Could you kindly make videos about synonyms for words? They really help me to be fluent , speak quickly and not think for a long time to find the word we wanna say .
Thanks a lot for the video! So helpful before Christmas. I like your pronunciation explaining very much. We celebrate Christmas in January, New Year's eve is more important. Still I love this time. You prepare presents for friends and family, everybody has Christmas spirit, the snow is falling and everything is white. It's quite cold, but hot tea or wine make this time of year wonderful. Merry Christmas, Emma!
Hi Emma, We don't celebrate Christmas but I still put Christmas tree, decorate my house and little bit lighting outside of house because my daughter loves this all. We celebrate Diwali and we celebrate almost 5 days.
Yes it's very common to celebrate Christmas culturally just because other people are doing it too! 😊 How do you celebrate Diwali? What things do you do during that holiday?
@@mmmEnglish_Emma We have five days festival. Diwali we decorate house with Diya lamp and lighting and also do Rangoli in entrance and Main thing Goodness worship in the house. We Will have gifts from parents, uncle, aunty. We will have launch or dinner together and also dance, music last fire crackers at night. Little bit similar like Christmas 😊😊
I think your accent is like British accent because we also don't stress 'R' if it comes at the end of the word. Happy holiday and happy new year. This is Christmas gift from me.. 🎁💐
Namaste Emma, First of you and all members of yours family a very happy Christmas. Your lesson provide wonderful update about Christmas and how celebrate in different countries. See you soon in your new video/lesson. Thank you
Thank you Emma for your question!!! You're a great teacher. The Armenian Church believes in apostolic succession through the apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus. The Armenian Apostolic Church is the national church of the Armenian people. Part of Oriental Orthodoxy, it is one of the most ancient Christian communities. Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion in the early 4th century. January 6 is Christmas according to the calendar of Armenian Church. It is frequently asked as to why Armenians do not celebrate Christmas on December 25th with the rest of the world. Obviously, the exact date of Christ's birth has not been historically established-it is neither recorded in the Gospels. However, historically, all Christian churches celebrated Christ's birth on January 6th until the fourth century.According to Roman Catholic sources, the date was changed from January 6th to December 25th in order to override a pagan feast dedicated to the birth of the Sun which was celebrated on December 25th. At the time Christians used to continue their observance of these pagan festivities. In order to undermine and subdue this pagan practice, the church hierarchy designated December 25th as the official date of Christmas and January 6th as the feast of Epiphany. However, Armenia was not effected by this change for the simple fact that there were no such pagan practices in Armenia, on that date, and the fact that the Armenian Church was not a satellite of the Roman Church. Thus, remaining faithful to the traditions of their forefathers, Armenians have continued to celebrate Christmas on January 6th until today. I had a great opportunity to once again congratulate you and your family on the holiday of Christmas and New Year

It's also a religious function so we use to pray the salat at 8 am that's the way I can celebrate my religious function in a traditional way

Feliz natal e um próspero ano novo aos telespectadores.
My best wishes to you too!
Can you please translate it into English.,🤗🤗

I benefited a lot from you
I have a question ... How do I develop myself in english sounds?
Hi Emma, usually in France, at this time of year, we celebrate Jesus Christ birth. Christmas eve is a really nice moment with family, eating a veeeeeery long and quintessential meal (turkey with chestnuts and Christmas log, awesome wins and champagne) in front of the Christmas tree next to fire place (just be aware the Christmas tree is not burning!!!). We also make a family Kris Kringle! The night is almost the longest one of the year (winter time). But this year is a bite special, because like you, we stay at home, waiting for the birth of our first baby!!!:-)
My wife is pregnant and finally, my family will join us to spend a part of the holidays.
Huge thanks for your lesson and we wish a very merry Christmas!
Sebastien

In the Philippines, generally, Christmas is celebrated as religious rites, commemorating the birth of Christ. The celebration was express by exhibiting Christmas lantern, Christmas lights and trees, and Christmas parties, highlighted by raffles, gift giving, eating and drinking.
Sounds like a beautiful time of the year Rody! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and eat lots of delicious food 😁

If you don't mind,Could you kindly make videos about synonyms for words?
They really help me to be fluent , speak quickly and not think for a long time to find the word we wanna say .
Hi Batool, great suggestion!
Hi Emma,
We don't celebrate Christmas but I still put Christmas tree, decorate my house and little bit lighting outside of house because my daughter loves this all. We celebrate Diwali and we celebrate almost 5 days.
Yes it's very common to celebrate Christmas culturally just because other people are doing it too! 😊
How do you celebrate Diwali? What things do you do during that holiday?
@@mmmEnglish_Emma We have five days festival. Diwali we decorate house with Diya lamp and lighting and also do Rangoli in entrance and Main thing Goodness worship in the house. We Will have gifts from parents, uncle, aunty. We will have launch or dinner together and also dance, music last fire crackers at night.

I had a great opportunity to once again congratulate you and your family on the holiday of Christmas and New Year
Happy Christmas and Prosperous new Year
