  • Smashie and Nicey reflect on their radio careers after their depature from Fab FM. Features Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse. First broadcast on BBC1 4 April 1994. This was inspired by the shake up of BBC Radio 1 by Matthew Bannister which saw the departure of DJs such as Dave Lee Travis and Simon Bates.

They've got Top of the Pops down to a tee here!!! The "we're so eccentric" antics of the Dj's is so true!!

The song you hear Peely play is actually called 'You Bastard' and is by a band called ATV. It was released in late 1977 and appears on an album called 'The Image Has Cracked. The Alternative TV Collection.' The full track itself is only around a minute and a half long, like so many other great punk songs of that era!

I mean...I'm only speculating here, but the reason Smashie's wife might not have been particularly eager to go back to him could have had something to do with the fact that, although it's a lovely song, "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro...is actually about a woman who's died.
Mixed signals there, Smash, bless him...😂😂❤❤

Smashie and Nicey were the highlight of both Enfield and Whitehouse's careers.

They actually apologised to Tony Blackburn for making fun of his slow, largely on-air breakdown (during which he really did play that song over and over again - not as much as Smash, mind)

I thought the song was ‘If you leave me now’- he played it over and over again.

@leeka1 The sound of static electricity when Smashie touches everything is a master stroke (pardon the unintended pun).

Well, it was "an open secret," as they say... Nice callback to this in Harry and Paul's Story of the 2's special where the cast of Call My Bluff attempt to define what a paedophile is.

I can agree with the punk part , even though theyre satarising it. there was a false dilemma given to people, either abrasive 3 chord nihilism ,which became a bandwagon with lots of pseudo proletarianism taking over, or the remnants of the late 60s creativity. I suppose thats how subcultural cycles work, vacuums cant exist. much as I liked john peel and its bad he s gone ,I think he was being a vicar of bray, or maybe he really liked it ?
