  • Today I want to address what I think is maybe the best atheist argument against the existence of God. It's also a question that we Believers have been grappling with for centuries: Where is God? Why does He remain invisible to us? Why doesn't He reveal Himself unmistakably to all of us? I don't claim to have THE answer to that question. Nobody does. But here are my thoughts on the subject.

I think what you said makes sense. We seek god, through our trials we believe in god, we pray to god, we ask god for help, we may even blame god, but how many people can say they love god, not just for what he does for us, but also who he is in such a way that is a duty.

    IF GOD APPEARED
And I mean in his full strength. I think everything would be overwhelmed. There's a verse that talks about how the heavens could not contain Him. God inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57 : 15) None of us would be able to stand even if God veiled His glory. That's why God usually did veil it. Even when God came to earth in human form I think he veiled his glory and didn't even try to take a form that would make us desire Him (Isaiah 53 : 2). However, even then, for those still in sin, they'd immediately be fearful and want to hide (what Adam and Even did).

My biggest drawback to the existence of God is the lack of universal revelation. We have multiple sacred texts across people and lands, it's kinda far fetched to say that Israel and Europe were special and got the true revelation, while the Americas, Africa and Asia weren't that special to get a message from God.

    • @hermeshuh2781

@@hermeshuh2781 I get your point, I was referring to the largest land mass and people of these continents. But I think the best case is the Americas, until Columbus and others like him touched land over the Atlantic they had no idea that Christianity existed. It would have been easy for God to give them revelation and not wait for Columbus. How many generations of natives died before 1494 ?

The most reasonable explanation for this is that there isn't actually any gods and that the bible was simply written by men. To believe otherwise, without supporting evidence, is irrational.

There is a very well rounded theological explanation to God's hiddenness but it's too long to explain in a UA-cam comment. It's called the Doctrine of Divine hiddenness. William Lane Craig has a few good videos on the topic if you search for it.

I think you need to expound on why God wants us to love Him. Is he just some insecure deity who needs to be loved for His sake? Or is that love designed to change us to become something more like Him, and through that transformation gain...something He wants for His children, and agency is essential for this transformation? Full knowledge of his existence destroys agency as well as mercy, because we cannot abide His presence in our imperfect state. Hence the need for a mediator who has the power to become our advocate and bring us into God’s presence through His sacrifice.

If God made himself visible in the way suggested, there would be no room for the virtue of faith. As it is, it is possible to know that God exists (through reason), but this is not the same as faith.

    I love this.
Lucifer and the other sons of God, say and knew the Eternal Creator as well, but they chose to not want to be subject to the one they knew created them and the universe. So there are many people who if God revealed Himself in the sky, they would still challenge His existence. And other would still want to not be subject to God, because of their sin nature and free will. Even Jesus said "If you don't believe Me because of what I said, at least believe because of the works I performed". They still did not believe.

What you said was very thought-provoking, Matt! You obviously spent a great deal of time and contemplation arriving at these conclusions. I hope you'll please allow me to share how I see these things.
To begin with, I think both of us will probably agree that God is spirit energy. As human beings in the physical realm, we don't have the ability to see this spirit source energy. If we did, it would just show up as sparkles. And there would be no way of physically hearing God, because spirit energy doesn't make physical sounds.
We are not apart from God. We are _a part_ of God. Our spirits are actual extensions this spirit energy, just as your fingers are extensions of your palm (with your palm symbolizing "God").
Our bodies are physical expressions of spirit. As banjo player, I'm sure you're familiar with what a finger pick is. For those reading this who might not know, they're little plastic picks that fit on the tips of your fingers, used to pluck a stringed instrument, such as a guitar. Well, as a guitar player, this is the best analogy that I can come up with to describe what our physical bodies are.
When you entered this physical dimension, a plastic pick (representing your physical body) was placed on the tip of your finger (your spirit being), so to speak, so that you could pluck the strings of this great musical instrument called physical life, and play your individual music. Once a person's life is at an end, the finger (your spirit) releases itself from the pick (your physical body).
Although released from the physical body, the spirit does not "go" anywhere, because it is still an extension of spiritual source energy (the palm). To put it another way, once you play your song on the banjo using finger picks, you remove the picks from your fingers. Do your fingers then fall away from your palm and go somewhere else? No, that would be silly. The fingers on your hand will always remain a part of your palm, whether or not you are wearing finger picks.
I should point out that I'm speaking with you of my perspective, through the lens of a non-religious viewpoint. In other words, I used to be a Christian, but now I am simply a theist. I'm happy to say that I'm learning even more as a result of my conversion.
So, I have to be completely honest and say that there is no "hell". The spirit in your body is experiencing both physical (Earth) and spiritual (Heaven) realms of life, simultaneously. Our spirits are in the spirit realm or "heaven" which is where God is, while at the same time, straddling into the physical realm. (And remember, since we're extensions of God, this means that we are also God, as in connected "offspring", so to speak.)
Therefore, metaphorically speaking, when you remove the finger pick from your finger, your finger doesn't "go" to heaven or a hell. It's already in heaven, anyway, and will always remain there, because your finger is a part of God and it will always remain a part of God (your palm).
As for communicating with this source spirit energy, we do it by "sensing". Dr. Wayne Dyer has said, "If prayer is you talking to God, then intuition is God talking to you."
Remember, we're in a different dimension than spirit, so this is why it's impossible for us to actually "see" God in the same way that we could if we were exclusively with God in the spiritual realm. Our perceptions as spiritual beings are different than our perceptions as physical beings. If we could actually see God now, as I mentioned earlier, it would be as sparkling spirit energy. But once we transition exclusively into the spiritual realm (i.e., "go to" heaven), we can then "see" God in their fullest capacity.

I mean as a Platonist I’m a bit confused by the question. Like to me God, or what most people call God, is not a person or a being as we would understand it. God is an infinite unity from which all of creation emanates. I even hesitate to call this “God” instead opting for the Ineffable One because “God” means “that which is given libation.” This is where I believe Abrahamists get it wrong. You can’t worship the Ineffable One directly because in order to worship something you must be able to understand it and The One defies understanding.
That’s why I’m a polytheist, I worship the Gods as a sort of intermediary between us and The One which can’t be worshiped directly. I’ve often been accused of demon worship but ontologically the Gods are closer to what a Christian would call angels. They’re the highest emanation of The One and the demiurges that crafted the cosmos as we know it.
So when people say “God is hidden”, I’m confused. The Ineffable One is everywhere, all around us. From the Gods, to our souls, to our bodies, to the trees and even the rocks. All matter flows from form and all form flows from The One. As for the Gods themselves, they aren’t hidden either. They’ve revealed themselves embodied on many, many occasions. In Ásatrú, the Germanic tradition, this age is actually the exception in that the Gods do not appear to us directly. In all other ages, they have.
The entire poem Rigsthula is about the God Rig-Heimdall being sent to Midgard (earth) to give us our civilization. And before that the Sons of Borr, Odin and His brothers, walked the shores of Skåne when they created the first humans. And after that Freyja has appeared, Thor has appeared, even Gefjon-Urd has appeared.
In the Vedic tradition it’s believed that in times of crisis when the imbalance of dharma and adharma is so great that human beings can do nothing to correct it themselves, the Lord appears as an incarnate avatar of the Supreme Godhead. The last time this happened was around 3,228 BCE with the birth of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. But even then there have been many lesser avataras in the form of enlightened gurus like Isha Putra who appeared in the Levant 2,000 years ago to preach dharma to the semites or even arguably as recently as fifty years ago with Srila Prabhupada.

  • @ferb1131

That's an interesting idea, but I don't think this answer really stands up though, since God acted quite differently in the past, and the people he dealt with directly were still able to love him. It is certainly a complicated question, but I think the idea acknowledge and brushed over at the beginning is closer to the truth, that people simply wouldn't accept God - or at least, wouldn't obey him - even if he showed himself. Just as Jesus didn't bother replying to arguments from people who weren't genuinely interested, so too God isn't concerned about providing more and more evidence to those who don't really want to seek him. As Jesus said, if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead. When boys were praising him and unbelievers objected, he said the stones would cry out if they kept silent - and perhaps the stones crying out would have been a more effective proof of him being the messiah. But even though that sign could be provided to those objecting, it wasn't given. What God wanted was to provide testimony through humans.

God is "hidden" because to see Him would be to lose the freedom to to love Him or not to love Him. To see Him would render us incapable of NOT loving Him. God demands that we love Him FREELY. He rejects being loved by force. We are made in the image of God. God is Free. God made us free. Free to love; free not to love.

Psalm 25 tells us that the secret of the Lord is revealed to them that fear Him and keep His covenant. 1 John tells us that He has given us an mind to know Him. James tells us that those who believe that God may say no, to us asking Him for wisdom, are the ones who won't receive, because they are double minded. God is hidden because of either a hard heart or ignorance on our part. We become transformed by the renewing of our minds. We are supposed to be reading our Bible, and reading them with a working relationship with Jesus. If not, then God will seem hidden.

  • @jaclo3112
    @jaclo3112 2 роки тому +2

So the three answers he has offered to the theistic problem of divine hiddenness:
    1. Because Jesus...yet many other gods of other religions are claimed to have walked around. The necromancer demigod of the christian bible isn't the only god that has been claimed to have done magical things. Miracles, virgin birth, dying and rising motifs are common in god mythologies. What's more there is as much evidence of all these supernatural claims for other gods as there is for Jesus. What would be great if theists could provide evidence for their gods. otherwise your claims are nothing but claims designed to pretend their god isn't hidden. I take it Matt has chosen to disbelieve in the revelations, miracles, resurrections etc of other gods, just as the majority of people in the history of humanity disbelieves in the mythology he has chosen to believe despite there being no evidence of any magical god claims.
    2. The christian gods have have revealed themselves...because argument from "LOOK AT THE TREEEES!!!" But believers in other gods of other religions have also revealed themselves. So which gods have revealed themselves? or have all of them? so we should be worshiping Brahma? And isn't it interesting that the more ignorant, poor, dysfunctional a society is, the more self evident gods are to these people.
    3. God wants us to love him so he hides. wtf? belief isn't forced. are we forced to believe trees exist? are we forced to believe our spouses exist? are we forced to believe our children exist? No. Their existence is undeniable and yet we can STILL love our spouses, children, nature etc. Or are you saying we cannot love our spouses, children, friends, nature etc because their existence is undeniable therefore we are FORCED to believe them so cannot love them? Do you love the Islamic god Allah because he is hidden? Are the people who are claimed to have witnessed the magical miracles of the necromancer god Jesus didn't love him because they were FORCED to believe in him as he was physically in there presence? Did Thomas not love him because he got the evidence he demanded, ie to be able to finger his holes, before he believed the jesus necromancer was reanimated from the dead? You do realise the massive flaw in this logic? the problem with the marriage analogy is that we have undeniable existence of said spouse. Using the wife/girlfriend analogy your god is merely your Canadian girlfriend we just haven't met yet. Or that you don't love her because her existence has been made known to you so you are FORCED to believe she is real.
Your first two arguments are arguments for many deities, not just the christian gods. But your best argument for why gods are hidden is the most irrational and fails so hard at the most basic logical level. what a complete mess.

According to Isaiah chapter 59 in the Bible God does hide from sinners and that's why people are so quick to ask--does God exist? However, the proof of God's existence is found in the verbal truth. God gave his living word to man so that man can come to know him through his sagacious words of instruction. As a matter of fact, if God's word is so powerful, indeed, that God said let there be light and there was light, why wouldn't God use his word in order to instruct man to live a moral life so that we may no longer be divided from God due to filthy sinfulness of degraded humans that is offensively repulsive to our holy God. In short conclusion, one becomes a witness of God's existence when one finds God by breaking the barrier of sin or by doing what is right in his sight. I have found God and seen miracles and I'm pleased to share my knowledge with y'all.

  • @JtWYeah

If everyone knew and saw God, danger is to the soul if he chooses against God. Imagine if you see God and then deny Him. I'm pretty certain that's the unpardonable sin. It's like looking at the sun and saying that the sun doesn't exist.
I think it's also part of the purpose of this life. We are supposed to choose God without knowing in the fulness. That's what faith is. He wants to see if we will still follow Him even though it's not self-evident. Life is ultimately a test.
Anyways, just my two cents. Great content.

If god isn’t going to make the effort to see me face to face then he’s unworthy of my love cause a healthy relationship isn’t one person that all responsibility for development of the relationship also I don’t think everyone would be physically attracted to god, finally there is no fear in love.

I don’t agree with your answer to part 3 particularly. Even when God revealed himself plainly (and on speakerphone - how much louder can it get than him being there physically), people still didn’t believe him. I guarantee you even if Jesus today shows up in person and says otherwise, people will still not believe him. And no, it won’t be a small number of people. Many have denied God back then, and many will still deny him if he shows up today.
I am not a believer in God. So my only rational explanation as to why he doesn’t reveal himself (anymore - despite showing himself multiple times back then) is because he simply doesn’t exist.
Btw the reason why I said I guarantee people will still not believe in God is because of cognitive dissonance. No way Muslims will believe in Jesus. No way will Jews believe in Jesus. Heck, even Christians (who have strayed far from Jesus’ original message) will probably disagree if he were to come today. Of course, many WILL believe in God; but similarly many will NOT. At some point he’ll be labelled many things (Anti-Christ, satan, deceiver, magician, alien, wizard, reptilian shapeshifter).
The fact that we have people who believe in all kinds of weird stuff is enough to support that claim as well (for example: flat earthers, Bush did 9/11, Queen Elizabeth and Barack Obama are reptilian shapeshifters, Mohammed is a peaceful prophet)

You can't love something you can't even interact with. You're not in love with God, dude, you're in love with an idea. You say if God showed up some people would stop loving God. Why's that? The only reason I can think of for that to happen is that they'd realize the idea of God they love isn't the real God. They never loved God in the first place, just an idea. So that shouldn't even be a concern for God showing up. Also, if they stopped loving him after he shows up on this side, it's likely they wouldn't continue loving him if they first met him on the other side.

When God did reveal himself clearly in the person of Jesus Christ, his own people sought to kill him and did. At the synagogue at Nazareth they tried to throw him off of a cliff. This is the nature of the fallen human will. Self will is provoked by any challenger. Far from loving God, it will seek to crucify Him. God has chosen for it all to hinge on faith/ belief. Believe and be saved. Don’t be like Thomas.

I am not a vegetarian or anything like that. I eat beef and chicken and fish on a regular basis. I am not an atheist, but an agnostic, believing that we just don't have the full wisdom to commit to any full belief of the "truth".
That said, why is God hidden?
Perhaps God, who created all beings, doesn't want all his creatures to murder and eat each other. These are the questions I ask myself every day. Obviously, most humans don't think eating other humans is an option. Unless it is the only means of survival. See the British navy, or those poor people in the plane wreck in the Andes, or the pioneers in the Sierra mountains. Point is, we are not so separated from "the animals" as some would hope and proclaim that we are. We are big brained monkeys. If you don't agree with that, please comment, and let me know, with evidence, that you can prove differently. I sincerely want to believe differently. No example of our technology can offer proof, as most of our technology comes with environmental damage. I worked in a chemical plant for years, and I know what I am talking about. Also, just see all the pollution on your streets, beaches, etc. Humans need to WAKE UP to the damage they are doing to their planet. It is probably too late for us. Probably a good thing for the planet. The earth will recover without us.
I also have asked God to tell me the truth.
What is right. Keep asking this question. My hope is that this question will be answered some day. I personally stopped believing in what I was told in the Baptist church about the age of 7 or 8 about the reserection. I believed at that time it could not be true, and have since figured out that the people that were there at the time didn't understand what happened. That, or the Catholic church made it up to control people...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. YRMV.
After that inflammatory statement, let me say that the Catholic people I know are some of the most caring people, devoted to family and community.

Matt, go further. The fourth and most obvious answer which also answers the first 3.
    *Drum roll*
    Answer 4: God doesn’t exist
Yes, unfortunately the truth on the matter is that by Occam’s razor the simplest explanation is that God does not exist which is why God is hidden.
As you stated in point 2, everyone in early days saw God everywhere. They looked at the world and used God as the most obvious explanation for things they didn’t understand.
Someone was sick and then miraculously got better? God healed them.
Crops going to die and it miraculously starts to rain? God blessed them.
The less we knew, the more space God occupied. The more we know, the less space God occupies. Theists have been backed in a tiny corner which is consciousness and the origin of life.
What happens when we discover natural mechanisms to those things?
If you sit there and just think about the fact that thousands of years ago, there were thousands of Gods people believed in and worshipped and now nobody believes in any of them, just think what about your God 1-2k years from today?
Of course Christian’s will say oh but the world won’t go on that much longer because Jesus is returning soon just look at what’s happening with Israel.
But think that almost 2000 years ago they were saying the same thing.
Also, you said God won’t reveal himself because then we would be forced to love him.
However, while that is your explanation it isn’t the one given in the Bible.
God created Adam and Eve and walked with them. We’re they forced to love him?
God was carried around in a box with the ancient Israelites. He appeared to Moses on mt Sinai and apparently to about 1 million Jews in the desert who would’ve seen the event.
He appeared to plenty of people. He also did miraculously appear as Jesus and performed miracles.
He appeared to Paul. Does Paul not genuinely love Jesus since it was forced upon his free will to have that revelation?
You see, if you’re honest, the only true answer is one of the following. God does not exist, or God has made a decision to no longer appear (meaning he changed, which he says he doesn’t).
The hardest decision you can make is realizing you’ve believed a lie, it was really hard to deconvert after being a Christian for 30 years.
Guess what, nowhere in my deconversion did god ever appear or help me. I was like you, just give me a a glimpse of you or whisper something and that would be enough to keep me going. Nada. Either God doesn’t love us or he’s the Calvinistic God and I just wasn’t one of the lucky chosen ones, OR the most obvious one…he just isn’t there. You don’t hear anything or get any response because you’re speaking to yourself.

But He DID reveal himself. He did it in the person of Jesus Christ. Christ had to set aside all his glorious power simply to be in our presence. Remember that the crucifixion was his choice. He said: "No one takes my life from me, I lay it down of my own accord and I retake it of my own volition. This command comes from my Father." No man ever saw God and lived. He does not hide. He is simply in harmony with all that is good that he created.

"Why is God hidden?" The most reasonable answer is that there are no gods. The real question is: why believe in something that there is insufficient evidence for? So ask yourself, what evidence is there in support of the existence of any gods? Without supporting evidence, it is irrational to believe such claims.
