This washer/dryer combo became some type of prop for that 1961 movie “Bachelor in Paradise,” which appeared in that scenario where that guy who rented his girlfriend’s house became absent-minded by loading too much detergent; causing some giant flood.

How about telling your husband to wash his neck better??

Yeah?? tell a husband back then to do something HE didn't think of (or want to do), and it was the back of his hand across the wife's mouth, without a moments hesitation!

You watch too much stereotyped TV. Very rarely was that the result of such an interchange in most households of the day. Physical violence was not the rule, but rather the exception. The only thing "common" about it was in the character of the man, in the brutish, common behavior they displayed, and that was far from the rule. Most marriages were conducted in complete civility, and in actual love, not in caveman antics, or "The Honeymooners" style "Bang! Zoom! To the moon, Alice!"

+kerryincolumbus You haven't the first clue in the world what you're talking about. YOU were the one "taking things WAY too seriously" as nothing about your last comment could possibly be further from the truth. Lesbo? My husband would be the first to vehemently disagree with you, if he thought you were worth the effort. Fem Nazi? Likewise.
Go back to your video games now and be quiet - the grownups are talking now.

@Mark Conti - Check out the older Bendix Deluxe front loaders. The deluxe models were automatic washer/dryer units in one. When Levittown was first built on Long Island, the houses were completely equipped with kitchen appliances including a Bendix standard front loader, in the kitchen under the stairway on some models, which had to be bolted down to the floor to keep it from "walking" across the room on the spin cycles! That was a job for ONE MAN alone when all those homes were being built! One man went from house to house as they were being completed, bolting down washers! Talk about specialization! It wasn't a dryer, but being a heavy duty front loader, it could spin clothes much dryer before they got hung outside in the sunshine, on the collapsible "umbrella" style clothes lines that every house also came with. NO long wash lines were allowed behind the houses, and NO hanging laundry out on Sunday at all! Also, no fenced back yards either.
Talk about a Home Owners Association! Only this was more like a BUILDER'S Association! They called all the shots at first, in your contract to buy a house there, including who you could NOT sell your home to if you decided to sell your home and move. 😠

Was the Philco Duo-Matic both a washer and a dryer in one? If so, that is one front loader I would have bought back then. I had heard that Philco made a front loader years ago, I only had seen the Westinghouse version. Nice post.

Bendix, as noted above, developed the first washer-dryer; when Philco bought Bendix from Avco Corporation, the machine became known as the Philco-Bendix Duomatic. However, Whirlpool, Maytag and GE also made washer-dryer combinations, and Sears sold a Whirlpool combination under the Lady Kenmore name, as well as Westinghouse....

I'd like 2 of these! The machines clean far better than the washers being made today. HE Detergents would be right at home in these machines and give great cleaning performance in these Duomatics!!!
