  • Servicing the Synchro-Compur shutter from a Kodak Retina IB camera. This one had problems with sluggish shutter and the diaphragm blades were noticeably oily.
    Consumables used servicing camera bodies:
I use naphtha (cigarette lighter fluid) for cleaning metal parts. CRC Heavy Duty Lectra Clean for dried grease that the naphtha won’t dissolve. A generic wax and grease remover to soak mechanical parts prior to cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner. Glass cleaned with normal domestic glass cleaner.
Parts are lubricated with Inox MX6 (a synthetic grease), Rocol Dry Molybdenum paste, MicroLubrol Helimax XP helicoid grease, graphite powder, or graphite grease as needed.
Leatherettes are glued back with Ados F2 adhesive.
Consumables used servicing shutter and lens assemblies:
Naphtha (cigarette lighter fluid), or occasionally CRC Heavy Duty Lectraclean. Lenses cleaned with normal domestic glass cleaner.
Parts are lubricated Rocol Dry Molybdenum paste, MicroLubrol Helimax XP helicoid grease, graphite powder, or graphite grease as needed.

    What an amazing video, Chris!
For your "regulars", we can hear your voice throughout this repair. We can hear what isn't being said. Not only are you a master repair technician, but a master creative artist as well.
There's one thing that I've appreciated in all forms of "art", is artistic masters who are geniuses in there use of "empty space", whether it be physical, visual or audio.
    Genius! 🙂

Just watched from start to finish, my 1B could do with some of that, great technician no voice but also no music either which is a big plus. Thank for sharing Chris its appreciated.

Imho, your narration adds huge value to your videos. I hope this is just a one of.

Not to be repeated. So much better with your All Blacks comments. 😉

It's good (as always) but not the same without your voice-over Chris.

I suppose this now becomes multi-lingual. I agree. This video has an odd feel for those of us who regularly take comfort in listening to Chris' story telling. 🙂

However,,, Note how we can appreciate the ever-present background sounds in all of Chris' videos. The constant tick-tock-tick-tock of his clock (I assume to be vintage mechanical), the ever-present birds outside and that familiar whistle as Chris slides his work across that plastic work surface. Even without Chris' voice, there's something soothing about the sound of Chris at work. Regardless of narration or no narration, Chris puts on another class act once again. No need for endless and meaningless banter or horrible "music" background noise. Even without voice, there's always much to be learned and entertained by this "retired" master at work.
      Thank you, Chris.
You always manage to, "Make something old, new again." (literally and figuratively.)

What tool is used to remove the lens from the body. I have made smaller ones from flat head screwdriver and bits. This one looks a bit challenging. Thank you hope retirement is enjoyable!!!😁

I have a Vitessa with the same shutter on the bench, and i really miss the simplicity, compactness, effectiveness and overall straight approach of the earlier compurs...
Free springs here and there to my eyes seem to be a not very well thought concept.
