      I remember they did that too to confuse Japanese forces. Navajo and Japanese have a similar phonetic structure & grammar (very broad Ural-Altaic) but no common words, and it would be one of those languages to a Japanese ear that the "feel" they should understand, but they can't. As a Hungarian, it's the same thing when I listen to Navajo.

    Na-Dené language family of which Athabaskan belong to has been proposed to be distantly related to Asian languages, including Yeniseian in Siberia, North Caucasian and Sino-Tibetan as a macrofamily called “Dené-Caucasian” but this proposal was rejected by modern linguists.

      I always thought of Dené-Yeniseian as being Ural-Altaic. Similar phonology, SOV word order, and agglutinative structure. Not to mention, the Navajo culture being similar to Ural-Altaic cultures in Siberia. As a Hungarian, the vowel harmony with Navajo feels familiar and the overall structure, but I don't understand any of it. It's like I feel like I should understand Navajo, but I don't.

    Its kinda interesting how some words will be used throughout human history. For example, Navajo word for tall boy is ashkii'nez & a Hebrew man in the Bible is named Ashkenaz. Navajo word for mother is shi' ma and many cultures uses Ma as the term for mother as well. Not just in history but non fictional work as well. There was an old movie called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Im not too sure if thats where the Navajo word for car, chidi', comes from. Navajo word for Mexican/Wanderer is Nakai, which is also used as the name for a character in the Warhammer series. Amon Din was a lighthouse in the LotR series and the Navajo word for light is shoondiin or aldindiin.
    Of course there's words that come from Spanish/Mexican that Navajo use still beeso (not beso lol) - peso, cendao - centavo, Damoo - Damingo, mandagii'ah - mantequilla. Many Navajo leaders were known by Mexican names, Barbancito, Manuelito, Narbona, Ganado Mucho, Zarchillo Largos, etc. Navajo and the Spanish had relations long before the Americans came to the southwest

Thanks to DNA, the language dialects extend to the Ket people in inner Siberia. 10 yrs ago, the population was only 1200. Near extinction, the Ket people could be my ancestral lineage to pre ice age 15,000 years ago.

    Hi, I love these videos but I wanted to share that 'Athabaskan' is sort of a historical misnomer of a place in Canada, and in some of our communities is considered a little offensive since it's generalizing. The real word for our language family is Na-Dene. Unless you're talking about languages and cultures specifically on or around the Athabasca River in modern Alberta, then you aren't talking about "Athabascan"/"Athabaskan".

    • @geckofeet
      @geckofeet Рік тому +4

      @@anawkwardsweetpotato4728 No, actually the Navajo are themselves colonists. They invaded the area already inhabited by the Hopi and Tewa, and the word "Navajo" comes from the Tewa. In any event, the Navajo themselves use the word (Naabeehó) in addition to Diné, which just means "people"; the language is "Diné bizaad", lit "the people, their language." If you want to be funny when talking to them, you can call it "Diné nizaad" (the people, your language).

      @mr. gecko ah, I didn't know that! Most Diné I've encountered have said they prefer the term "Diné" over "Navajo." I take it this also has something to do with why the Hopi reservation is landlocked by Navajo Nation?

      @@geckofeetit's funny. Hopi used the Navajo as a buffer between them and other people. During the Pueblo Revolt, many Hopi and other Pueblo people sought refuge with the Navajo, bringing them in conflict with the Spaniards and then the Mexican. Some even helped Kit Carson round up the Navajos. You can make out the Navajos as being the oppressors but the Hopi and other Pueblo gave the Navajos lands to settle and taught them farming and weaving. In return, Navajos protected them until the so called Peaceful People decided the Navajos were no longer needed and would cause trouble between the Navajos and the Spaniards/Mexicans and later the US government. But saying such things takes away from the good relationships the Hopi and Navajos had between them as not all Hopi and Navajos were prejudiced towards each other. During the Long Walk, there's stories of Navajos who would be given refuge in Hopi kivas. Hopi and Navajos have dances that honor the other. Even in Navajo creation story, the Hopi were said to be in the SouthWest lands first.
