Here the English transcript in case anyone needs it :) Question of Love I sometimes think, that if love didn’t exist, what would people talk about otherwise? Love is one of the strongest subjective feeling that exists. Everyone has always known that, it's why in books, in plays and tragedies you have love as the driving force. You must take interest in all that appears as the greatest passion of humanity. Which means the big commitment of human subjects which for whatever reason go beyond man’s immediate concern. It's in these great passion that mankind creates its future and it's there that it can get out of it's present state and create something new. So it's something that deserves to ask that simple question; where are we today with the question of love? In Defense of Love Today, it's necessary to defend love. Love is the most powerful way known to humanity to have an intimate relationship with another. It places you in a state of dependence on another. Which is something that is fundamentally against modern individualism. If the sole motivation of human action is to satisfy one’s wishes and interests which is after the dominant idea of the modern world. If that is humanity then love can indeed be seen as a danger. We should be wary of love and in particular, what happens on dating websites. Where we try to guarantee a romantic encounter in advance by ensuring that anyone you meet is just like you. They have the same tastes, same wishes, and the same determination. I think that goes against the very definition of love. Because it means there’s no element of adventure, no risks are taken, mutual satisfaction has to be guaranteed, like some kind of business contract and that I think is a serious threat to love. You need to defend love as a real, risky adventure against this individualistic, even egotistical vision. Because the truth is that love can’t be reduced to individualistic egoism. The Risk of Love Love is, in a way, a lesson in courage. In arranged marriages there is no risk. The same with dating sites. You try to avoid risk. Avoiding risk by calculating how to maximize a relationship with another. I think that all creation, all truth with any real significance is always linked to an event. Anything else is just a normal consequence of everyday world. It is neither a creation nor an invention, just a continuation. What does it mean to start something? If you want to consider something beginning, you have to consider there is an element of chance. If there isn't a chance involved then it’s not a start because it's something that already exists and is predetermined. So when I focus on risk, I focus on the fact that, love as a creation, as an invention is closely linked to a meeting, A meeting which is risky. And can be a meeting with people form completely different worlds. It's precisely because of the role that chance plays that love can have a creative dimension that is really interesting and universal. Love, true love, makes possible what was previously impossible. The Truth of Love The modern individualistic world is a world that represents humanity as a collection of single entities. Each is one. In its purest sense love is this passage from one to two in the experience of life itself. Love creates a perspective and an existence in the world which is not from the point of view of one because it is the perspective of two. The passing from one to two is a revolution. A great revolution. It's as if we are putting things in perspective as if suddenly the world has an extra dimension and it's an absolutely fundamental experience because it shows us that the truth of the world is in fact sustained by multitudes not by the atom that is you personally. Many people give up on love. People don’t understand clearly enough that love is a creation. A modern tendency, when there’s an obstacle, is to let go and move on to something else. If we settle on the idea that as soon as something is hard we have to give it up, we will settle for an uninteresting life. I don't deny the existence of love’s sadness. Abandonment or disappointment can be terrible emotions. But if, because of this, you renounce love then you reject the greatest experience of another that you can have in your existence. All that is true is rare and difficult. Unfortunately that is true.
“If we settle on the idea that as soon as something is hard we should give it up, then we will settle for very uninteresting lives.” Love that. Thank you for this film, very well made.
I've been married twice. The first time at age 19 and it lasted 24 years because we grew apart, our children were grown and we no longer wanted the same things. I met my second love at age 45 after being set up by a mutual friend. We feel in love quickly and were married a year later. We are entering our 25th year together soon. I've learned that love ebbs and flows but mutual respect and common interests and goals prevail.

Loved it. There needs to be a balance with everything in life. Too much of Individualism or societal conformity leads to discontent. Likewise passion and sense needs to be in balance for a healthy emotional state. It takes a lifetime to try to maintain that balance.
Romantic love is one way to get this. So is friendship and family. But individualism is definitely hurting us with our ability to connect. All these people want to build a better world but it's their way or the highway. They forget that connection and kindness are the main ingredients.
Amazing absolutely amazing. I had to pause the video every now and then towards then end cause I couldn't see the subtitles through my tears. basically he says that love is about letting go of the ego and individualism and that dating sites try to minimize risk by finding someone who is similar. but love is about adventure, risk, courage, and the "what if". so people should be weary of dating sites "what does it mean to start something? if you want to consider something beginning, you have to consider there is an element of chance. if there isn't chance involved, then it's not a start b/c it's something that already exists and is pre-determined." ... As appreciative as I am for this video, I can't help but think that a fair amount of why love doesn't work out is b/c we barely understood how to make friendship work. Even before maybe coming across problematic 'When Harry meet Sally' attitudes that men can't be '*only* friends' w/women (in the long term).
I find funny how this is so uncritically romantic. Dating apps are a product of capitalism, sure, but the tale of "true" love and the likes has lots of capitalist undertones to it to (and patriarchal, I must say). Like the ultimate dream that will solve all your problems, love has also been marketed. Saying it's the more extreme subjective experience, the most profound experience of otherness mystifies and puts romantic love on a pedestal, making it qualitatively different from the love we could experience with our family, friends, strangers, ultimately leading to the santification of marriage, of the couple, above all else. And yet love can be equally powerful and beautiful while remaining much more mundane. You can love deeply and truthfully your friends, family, coworkers, etc. You can be surprised by otherness in so many contexts. And relationships can be so mundane too, so full of false expectations and misunderstandings and qui pro quo. I think definitely, love has to be defended. But I think that love is only revolutionnary when it's about more than just your SO.
In his book, In praise of of Love he adresses what you are saying. I really recommend reading it, it's a quick and easy read. What he says can sounds as a sanctification of the couple, but first Badiou doesn't care about marriage, yes he mainly believes in monogamy. Second, when he says love he uses it to create a philosophy of empathy, one of working to encounter others in the moment. Political movement, social movement can only be born in "love" because it bases itself on the work to overcome the obstacle of the event, creativity in a meeting. Refusing the easiness of consumption, can happen in the mundane. Moreover the subtitles are really misleding, I am french and I already read him so it's easy to get what he means. But some translation here are really sloppy and doesn't transcribe some subtilities.
Someone complained about the distracting music and visuals Jesus that was the whole point the whole thing was beautiful and the photography was amazing it all worked in unison enhancing the message brilliantly
Had to skip all that random shit to focus on what he had to say. Really horrible to see a titan such as Badiou being drowned out by random naked people and cringe-worthy visual storytelling
Doug McCart all but those who could read them and experience the images without breaking focus. That needs to be addressed if he wants his work to flow and be seen by a diverse audience. Some people are reading the English subtitles as not their native language. They were too small, and faded into the image so both aspects of the narration and Imagery are completely lost to anyone who doesn’t understand French. If this is what the artist wants then so be it. But, the fact there are subtitles indicated it isn’t, thus it was a poorly executed attempt that can be rectified easily.
The idea that risk defines love, and therefore maximizing risk maximizes love... Why not eat food from the street? You risk the worst diseases, is your food not then more delicious? Other than that, I appreciate everything else he has to say, tho I would add this: love that feeds us needn't necessarily be romantic, sexual love. There are so many kinds of love. Love for friends, pets, family, colleagues, strangers met for a second on the street.... Sexual intimacy is indeed a wide and swift road to our depths, for most, but it's hardly the only road, and of course many people live much of, if not their entire lives feeling frustrated in this sort of love, and to define ourselves by it is, I believe, a foolishness.
20 years ago I used to be in contact with a French philosopher with the name of Alain, can't remember his surname. We used to talk about spiritual philosophy by email. He found me through my website.
Though I know what he's saying is right, I have had difficulty going beyond the "modern individualism", and finding love... for so long. How's it possible to love someone, if I feel a kind of "danger" whenever there is something that can be described as love? That's why I feel empty when I am told to love.
Although my fav philosophers happen to be French [Im British], I still think he is profoundly incorrect. For example, many people are looking for love on dating apps. Many people have has successful arranged marriages [which statistically work out better]. but I get the point. Take Mother Fucking Risks!
I know that seems obvious that problem is individualism, but this individualism is nothing about individuation of the one, actually very opposite it is comforting with common cultural views by imposing on irrational forces of life, which is love as well. Its not problem of ego. Its not problem of our nature. Its problem of outside forces, environment. That shape us. We don't change environment we just adapt to. Love is mechanism of adaptation to environment as well as rationality. So problem is our rationality not love because its irrational force. One can get energy from love to rationalise better. And can fight to that how through love rationalised reality. And love means other being of course. Self rationalisation and actualisation is only possible through love, no self love but love towards other, and that means true individualisation, everything else is just automatisation of specific conditions of one self in interaction with environment. Because when you love someone you accept one as part of self but separate objective part that gives you better objective understanding of self and you accept that as truth not as possibility. Being self is capacity to love. Because that how you conquer your irrational accepting self as just part of equation called love. And that is only position of individuation otherwise one is just living animal, submerged in environment
"All that is true is rare and difficult" applies only to modern societies, I think. In the original hunter-gatherer societies, these "true" things like love are common and easy.
this was extremely vague, like a horoscope. not sure if i’d call this philosophy as a stand-alone video. every situation is unique, and many relationships shouldn’t continue especially if they are toxic.
Martin Schwoerer I understood it. Been in a loving relationship for 13 years. I worry about the hopefulness and almost religiousness he puts on the word love. Every situation is different, and many people should move on from relationships where even though there is love, they are better off separating. Love is not just some blanket statement, it means so many different things.

i disagree doug mccart. it was too much. 30% less fluff woulda been better imo
Well, this deserves to be shared far and wide. What a beautiful meditation.
Merci. J'en avais besoin aujourd'hui.
Je vous remercie Monsieur Alain Badiou. Ça me touche beaucoup ‘tout ce qui est vrai est rare et difficile ‘
i`m going to send her the letter !
I hope it went well for you
we need an update!
Best of luck man
so how it went buddy ?
@@ishaanrohmetra3447 I may not have what I wanted, but honestly, I’m living my best life right now!
This is a 'true' Masterpiece.
I really needed this ❤️ merci Monsieur Badiou pour votre mots!
20 years ago I used to be in contact with a French philosopher with the name of Alain, can't remember his surname. We used to talk about spiritual philosophy by email. He found me through my website.
ELIAKIM Joseph Sophia Could he be Alain de Botton ? He is not French , but Swiss .
@@Threefernscr I honestly don't remember it was back in 2002 timeline. I remember that he was living in France, outside Paris I think.
This philosopher just called himself alain. No other name
I don't know too much english but I understand the 80% of the subtitles, awesome great words!!!!!!
Who's here from their Philo studies? Philo profs sure love this!
Power to love.
Great channel! Thanks for the content.
i just let the romantic part back into my life recently and this video shows up damn. im not crying you are
Though I know what he's saying is right, I have had difficulty going beyond the "modern individualism", and finding love... for so long. How's it possible to love someone, if I feel a kind of "danger" whenever there is something that can be described as love? That's why I feel empty when I am told to love.
He says in the video at one point "Love is a practice in courage". There are no easy solutions. You must truly embrace the danger that comes with it.
I want to send this beautiful man lots and lots of love, hugs and kisses 😘
"....a lesson in courage"
Please increase subtitles.
Thank YOU MUCH.
My favorite French philosopher😻
The most beautiful video on youtube. Without love then what is life for?
the smile at the end says it all.love is the motor.to my mind the video would be great without illustrations.anyway.thx to alain
Absolutely amazing! Thanks!
"Here to learn, by the twin hieroglyphs of love and suffering"
Mark Rowe i can’t find the author of the quote.
this wakes me up , merci beaucoup !!!
Thank you Shireen. :)
a glorious gem
Beautiful video. love Badiou. Thank you!

Beautiful, inspiring. Thank you for this💙
Such an amazing message and incredibly done editing. Another great video watched from this channel. - thank you for such amazing content!
Although my fav philosophers happen to be French [Im British], I still think he is profoundly incorrect. For example, many people are looking for love on dating apps. Many people have has successful arranged marriages [which statistically work out better]. but I get the point. Take Mother Fucking Risks!
Inspiring. Thank you. (the title is not appropriate though, why not try something simple: Alain Badiou about Love)
views lol
Life isn't worth living without risk!
I didn’t use any app, no manipulation, I simply fell in love with someone who’s not in my opposit sex as it should be
Hugely moving and poetic. I'm breathless
Amazing! I love this emotion that the video brings up. Thank you!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing, Nowness! :D
What a charming man
I think what he and Zizek miss about modern online dating is how irrelevant the "matchmaking" is and the enormous role played by contingency.
A nice reminder.
art. how beautiful this film is.
stunning. thank you
and keaton in the background magnicent
"All that is true is rare and difficult" applies only to modern societies, I think. In the original hunter-gatherer societies, these "true" things like love are common and easy.
why am I crying
Spinoza reference at the end
what's the name of the first piano piece? I couldn't find it anywhere. Pls if you guys recognize that one let me know
Amazing!
this was extremely vague, like a horoscope. not sure if i’d call this philosophy as a stand-alone video. every situation is unique, and many relationships shouldn’t continue especially if they are toxic.
if you think it was vague, then perhaps you just didn't understand it.
Beautiful music
Where can I get the whole transcription of this phenomenal video :)?
this is so strong!
No question I love this film❤💔
That was pretty cool.
this is beautiful
beautiful
Wonderful
i like this content
Is there a french transcrpit of what he's saying in the video? thanks!
Hey you. What are some authors that changed your perspective about love ?
it's curious it was translated to "business contract" rather than "economic contract"
What is the name of the song of the video?
Thank you
Imagine that...love needing a champion! Bravo!!
Magnifique
There is love and then there is Love.
love is incapable of ever giving birth to Love.
love has a sense of division and separation, which breeds conflict, violence, and suffering.
Love does not.
love originates in the brain.
Love does not.
love is a chemical process of the brain.
Love is not.
love is possessive, controlling, jealous, envious, etc.
Love is not.
love is given and received.
Love is not given or received.
Love is not like a commodity traded in the market.
love is limited.
Love is not limited.
love can be increased.
Love cannot be increased.
love has many levels.
Love has no levels.
Either one is capable of Love or one is not.
love is the opposite of hate. love and hate are opposite sides of the same coin.
Love has no opposite.
love loves only some.
Love Loves all.
Love does not exclude anyone or anything.
love is the movement of the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which is the invention of the past conditioning of the brain.
Total Freedom from this delusion is the beginning of Love, in each and every moment of daily life.
Do Jacob's Ladder. Set yourself Totally Free of fear, anxiety, sorrow, suffering, confusion, alienation, addictions, envy, greed, jealousy, pride, anger, hatred, violence, bias, and prejudice, in daily life, once and for all, now forever. Then and only then is there Lucidity, which gives birth to Love. See my group on Facebook: "Total Enlightenment NOW!".
After your Enlightenment, come join me on the front lines where we are working to move us all on planet Earth from the way things are today to a Whole New Way of Living rooted in Love and Wisdom. See my group on Facebook: "Creating a Wonderful World. (let's get it done already)".
@sebastion cole You're obviously not a Human Being yet.
Tout ce qu'est vrai est rare et difficile...
