Tbh they’re not even following the books season 2 had a love triangle that shouldn’t have happened, all these storylines about the Featheringtons, and even the increased LW which wasn’t bad in the books
This was an outstanding show. I was especially impressed with the actor for young George and how he acted out the episodes of distress/madness. It could easily have become cartoonish, and instead, it was believably devestating.
This is a strange example of when a spinoff series beats the actual series to a bloody pulp. It was TOO GOOD!!! Compared to the first two seasons of Bridgerton and ig your pointing out that maybe it was because it was an original and not a book adaption might be it. Either way, it was top tier for me and my fav out of all the seasons including this 3rd first half one.
I also finally felt accurately represented in media. Mental health issues not shown as “scary” and as people who should be shunned away from society but people who also deserve love.
Arsema Thomas as the younger Lady Danbury was outstanding. The voice she found for her character was a perfect foreshadowing of Adjoa Andoh's clipped, emphatic (and often borderline frightening!) tone.
I loved the first two seasons of Bridgerton but I gotta say I started watching Queen Charlotte with 0 expectation because I felt like it wasn't very interesting but boy was I wrong? I think it is by far my favorite season. It's just perfect. Acting, costumes, visually but also the storytelling was so so so good. It made me cry so much at the end; it was so moving. I really really loved it. Such a pleasant surprise.
The writing, the production and the acting are all absolutely top-notch in this season. I was even more invested in the storylines of the characters here than I was in either Bridgerton 1 or 2. And that goes not only for George and Charlotte, but Lady Danbury and Brimsley and Reynolds as well.
The writing was so good. This wasn't melodrama the way Bridgerton is. This had genuine pathos. I'm not saying the younger Bridgerton actors are less talented, but frankly, the source material for Bridgerton is not well written. Much as loyalists to Quinn may object, Rhimes has improved on the books by leaps and bounds.
Completely agree with your review. This is my favorite bridgerton series. They showed what it means to stand next to and stand up for someone you love absolutely and unconditionally. Love how it made me reevaluate Charlotte in the other series knowing her story with George.
So I watched Queen Charlotte before season 1 or 2 of Bridgerton. Queen Charlotte was my introduction to the franchise. It was amazing. Loved it and couldn't stop watching. After watching it I decided to go ahead and watch Bridgerton Season 1 and 2.....and I was disappointed in the difference in quality. Nevertheless, I committed to just watching the stuff for the love of Queen Charlotte 🤣. I'm very glad it was my intro to the bridgerton stuff because had i watched season 1 of Bridgerton first I NEVER would have finished it .
I suffer from bipolar disorder and have had moments of psychosis. The actor who plays king george is soooooo believable. I cried so much. I know what that pain is like the-- catatonia to the delusions--. Believing you see something in this world that others cannot understand. Him chasing venus. The slight truth to it...till you realize that his thoughts around it and his behavior is very bizarre. All i could wish for him is that he had the same meds that helped me in the present in the past. It was very moving. I appreciate his intelligence as well. Being able to be lucid when Charlotte goes along with the delusion "farmer george". Its so beautiful
It's because Shonda was the writer. She's a really good TV writer while Bridgerton is based on the books, so I wouldn't expect an elevation of Bridgerton based on this due to the plots originating from different places.
The reason Queen Charlotte is worlds better than Bridgerton is because of Shonda Rhimes. She is simply brilliant. The Bridgerton series is based on Julia Quinn's romance novels, so they make them better for the television series, but still stay close enough to the books. Whereas, Shonda wrote the Queen Charlotte series, so she's able to take those characters and add her brilliance to their stories. I loved QC so much. The music, the casting, the stories, costumes, lighting, sets, directing, everything! It would be wonderful if they had a season 2, but I understand that may not happen.
Exactly one issue with the series: I wanted to hear young George call her 'Lottie'. They could have made us cry with a single nickname and they just let that go to waste.
Sorrows! Prayers!! I saw someone call it dark and moody, but I don't think that's how I woudk describe it. I think its mire grounded and makes it its purpose to show love in an imperfect light. But it's still so beautiful.
QC is genuinely and OBJECTIVELY the best Bridgerton installment and thank you for technically breaking down why that is quality wise. I remember having to leave the Bridgerton reddit sub afterwards, cause they were extremely passive-aggressive towards the spin-off and its quality and tried harping how its not as good as others say and how it didn't get awards like other said it deserved, very obvious jealousy from diehard stans.
Shonda is amazing, the reason most knew Bridgerton would be a hit, Netflix gave her loads of $$ to come bring her Shondaland production company to Netflix
“You didn’t go over the wall” Just destroys me Re: Brimsley and Reynolds…in the book, George and Reynolds grew up together. They each “knew” about each other and were real friends who supported one another. I wish they had found a way to work that in. Also…I demand a young Violet series
The wedding literally had me crying from the start 😭 the music, the lighting, the cinematography, the looks, it was just absolute perfection for no reason
I agree! This was a great surprise no one knew they needed! because I did not remember they published about it so much. And the ending omg it is one of the best endings of netflix series I think. However can’t wait to hear what you think about the third season. I do think it is a little underwhelming.
It took me until just now with S3 out to go back and watch QC, and omg. I immediately fell in love with all the characters and the bittersweet relationships they all had. Each love story was tragic in its own way. Everyone was so strong in their roles. I for one now feel robbed for not having a Lady Danbury back story, Im hoping we learn more about her with the introduction of her brother in Bridgerton. Everyone's mannerisms were the same as their elder counterparts, it was brilliant acting from everyone. From the Queens sharp quick manner of speaking and humor, to the way Lady D walked and spoke, so good. And I just about damn near died when ol' Brimsley was dancing alone in the end 😢 Violet needs a man soon or else she's gonna hurt someone 🤣 🤣 🤣
100% Queen Charlotte was - dare i say - majestic? (i'll see myself out) Also, i couldn't tear my eyes away from your very cute dog stealing the show in the background. Really 10 10 10s across the board! ;-)
I literally just finished watching it, and I am in absolute awe of how good Queen Charlotte turned out. I can't get over how complex all the characters were, and well acted. It felt so refreshing to see such imperfect love. The show does an amazing job showcasing that while the queen has many brilliant qualities, she wasn't a good mother and in many cases lacked basic sympathy and compassion. To see that further enhanced the romance in my opinion, as it showed how much she was willing to sacrifice for the king, even to the detriment of her own children. It's incredibly tragic, but so honest and real to the human experience.
When they were playing Deja vu I literally had to get up and shake my ass I never knew I needed that arrangement in my life 😂 what a blesssing! The music really did go off. Getting George's perspective in ep 4 was so good it made things make so much more sense. Also poor Brimsley I felt bad for him. This is definitely mandatory viewing 😂
I LOVE LOVE your analysis and how thorough and nuanced you really understand these stories and what’s at stake for these characters. You are the FIRST person who REALLY seems to understand ALL of these factors and to show sensitivity and intelligence and that you don’t look at these issues with a misplaced modern lens and understanding because I get so frustrated with some of these reactions where people really don’t understand people’s behavior and responses.
Literally just finished Queen Charlotte yesterday and all I can say is INCREDIBLE! Everything about that season was outstanding. The in depth look we got into the main characters’ past was so needed and refreshing. I’m not a big fan of the Bridgerton series but this “prequel” was everything!!
Finally some Queen Charlotte appreciation! It is guaranteed to become the fan favourite, no matter how many seasons of Bridgerton come out. The love story of Queen Charlotte from Germany and “Mad King George” who had a rare mental illness, is such an interesting concept to make a period drama from to begin with. Match it with a great score, great actors and great writing and it becomes a masterpiece.
My goodness I freakin love this show! You've literally made me want to watch it again. Handsdown it's the best Bridgerton season: and S3 really pales in comparison. Such a let-down.
i came across this video before ever watching queen charlotte (i had only watched bridgerton s1 years ago at first) so i ended up binging all the seasons including queen charlotte and wow… s1 will always have a special place in my heart but queen charlotte is by far the best out of all of them. i cried so hard at the end when theyre laying under the bed 😭
What I loved was that their love story was similar to real life. She didn't understand his mental health, as in the show, she loved him enough to not shame him and followed his his lead. And although queen Charlotte wasn't black in skin color, her ancient ancestor was black Portuguese
I watched Queen Charlottes before I watched any of the Bridgerton seasons was the best thing I ever could’ve done, it rlly helped me to see the characters and helped with a flushed out view, 10/10 prequel.
Im currently waiting for all of season 3 to be available before I sit down to watch. But you are right Queen Charlotte is absolutely must watch TV. I hope we get more seasons with the younger cast.
Just minor differences lol… ie Charlotte was not a black woman bringing in a great experiment. Nor was George crazy from childhood. His first signs of mental instability were in full on adulthood. They did seem to really love eachother and had lots of kids!
this is worth noting. in the book of queen charlotte, both charlotte and george acknowledged brimsley and reynolds' romance. it was in the scene where the two danced and the queen and king watched them behind a window. they mentioned how happy brimsley and reynolds looked and how the two reminded them of their own romance, so yeah pretty sweet. perhaps very historically inaccurate, but it's sweet.
I think the Queen Charlotte season is so much better because it is based on a true story. King George III and Queen Charlotte existed in the 1700s and ruled over England. A lot of the characters are fiction and so much of the plot is also fiction, but it is proven that King George III had a disorder that kept him from truly reigning and Queen Charlotte had to take over. I don't know anything about the "Great Experiment" but Queen Charlotte was black or of a darker complexion which was covered up.
Great season, but I couldn't stomach the torture he experienced. I like flowers and Calming scenes, it was too vexing. But apart from that it was beautifully shot and touched the soul (a little too much for me). Every up and down was felt.
For me it's a toss up between Bridgerton season 1 and Queen Charlotte. They are both so good. The first season was my introduction to the Bridgerton and I honestly think it was amazing. This one was so great because Shonda came up with the storyline whereas the other bridgerton seasons are based on the books.
Looks like that might be it!
Tbh they’re not even following the books season 2 had a love triangle that shouldn’t have happened, all these storylines about the Featheringtons, and even the increased LW which wasn’t bad in the books
yep....shes a brilliant storyteller....and this was her baby so I knew it was gone be amazing.
It was a fantastic season, and a very different tone than the regular Bridgerton seasons.
This was an outstanding show. I was especially impressed with the actor for young George and how he acted out the episodes of distress/madness. It could easily have become cartoonish, and instead, it was believably devestating.
Yes! He did a great job. I genuinely felt heartbroken for him.
Whoever worked on Queen Charlotte needs to work on Benedict and Francesca’s season
Shonda needs to write for it in that case
Real shit ....
Shonda did that
While Shonda's production company is behind Bridgerton, she's only written for Queen Charlotte, that's why it feels different.
Makes a lot of sense 😍I am addicted to it!
That makes a lot of sense because the way they did the black women characters is a mess
hell when he screamed "i love you charlotte" i was like hell i love charlotte too😭
This is a strange example of when a spinoff series beats the actual series to a bloody pulp. It was TOO GOOD!!! 15:40 Brimsley dancing alone will always make me cry no matter how many times I watch it
Queen Charlotte is an absolute masterpiece. It still haunts me daily.
I also finally felt accurately represented in media. Mental health issues not shown as “scary” and as people who should be shunned away from society but people who also deserve love.
I am so happy for you 🤍love & light x.
Daily. My heart wrenches with love and despair when I think about it
Queen Charlotte is my favorite of the Bridgerton series.
it was the best bridgerton story and George and Charlotte are the best couple istg. that last last scene makes me tear up every time I watch it
I was bawling hysterically when I saw it, what a beautiful scene
Queen Charlotte was a masterpiece of drama. The actors playing the king and queen were as good as it can get. I was invested right from the start.
I agree, this was a great series! Younger Lady Danbury’s acting was phenomenal. She stole every scene she was in. I need to see more of her!
This! I wanna see her in more things. Her and Simone
Arsema Thomas as the younger Lady Danbury was outstanding. The voice she found for her character was a perfect foreshadowing of Adjoa Andoh's clipped, emphatic (and often borderline frightening!) tone.

I have rewatched the series four times and my husband knows THAT scene (iykyk) only because he’s worried why I’m sobbing so hard
The writing, the production and the acting are all absolutely top-notch in this season. I was even more invested in the storylines of the characters here than I was in either Bridgerton 1 or 2. And that goes not only for George and Charlotte, but Lady Danbury and Brimsley and Reynolds as well.
BRIMSLEY YES I was so invested in his storyline!!! Such a good show with much more depth than Bridgerton.

Fine. I'll watch Queen Charlotte again.
Right!?! I may have missed something the first 30 times.
Completely agree with your review. This is my favorite bridgerton series. They showed what it means to stand next to and stand up for someone you love absolutely and unconditionally. Love how it made me reevaluate Charlotte in the other series knowing her story with George.

They are probably kicking themselves for that.
Yes!!! How’d they miss that? I was shocked when present-day George didn’t even use it in the last scene 😢
I want a Brimsley and Reynolds spin off so bad
Sorrows! Prayers!!

This is my fave season... Season 2 is really close, but Queen Charlotte is soo good ❤
Sorry I was trying to listen to you but your dog stole your thunder😉
The next bridgerton spinoff should be between Violet and Edmund / Violet and Lord Anderson
This is the best Brigerton season, and there wasn't a single Brigerton 😂

I think the Queen Charlotte season is so much better because it is based on a true story. King George III and Queen Charlotte existed in the 1700s and ruled over England. Queen Charlotte was written by Shonda and her team, and not based on an original novel. I think that’s the difference
i didnt watch the series until Charlotte came out....i watched Charlotte first.

I have watched it so many times I can't even count. The Bridgerton writers list the plot with the second season, making it utterly disappointing and boring.Queen Charlotte is all Shonda Rhimes from start to finish and she's a great screenwriter.

I am scared we are gonna have the gut punch to QUENN CHARLOTTE in Bridgerton Season 3 since in real life Queen Charlotte died before Queen Victoria (the grand child) was born....

why did you have to call lord Ledger "Violet's mum"?
Maybe I’m not looking at it right or missed stuff, but I don’t get how there still no prejudice/race conflict from any of the characters in bridgerton. Queen Charlotte showcased it as she was the first, but by the time of bridgerton, everyone is fully accepted into society but it hasn’t been too long since charlotte became queen.
They didn’t lol
it was defitniely not pefect. The sidelines were more exciting that the main story, everyone acts like the romance between Charlotte and George was so great but they barely interacted with each other and Charlotte spend 2/3 of the time being alone and miserable
Agree. They had amazing chemistry, so I loved when they were together - but we got so little of them, especially in the first few episodes!
