This monitor paired with a 34" ultrawide could be the ultimate setup for lots of situations. I too do residential design work and having this screen split top/bottom with the full widescreen looks like an awesome option: The working plan view on the widescreen with an elevation and another plan view or render on the square screen (split top/bottom).

Remember the resolution works a little different on MacOS than it does on windows. So when you set a lower scaled resolution it is still displaying the same resolution, it's just scaling it differently to make the UI more readable. Of course if you have an Apple Display you don't need to worry about this as it's all done for you.

I divide this monitor in half and use it for watching videos on the top and typing with a notepad on the bottom, very satisfied. It's good because it doesn't require a lot of eye movement.

From my experience working with a dual monitor setup, I ended up with something very similar. I would have AutoCAD drawing on the bottom monitor, and on the top I would have my layers, xref's, sheet set manager and properties. I would also sometimes split the upper monitor so I had outlook or an excel file open with out specs so I could design, draft and write specs as I needed to add them.

i stumbled upon this video whilst researching this monitor, and i hope in the last 2 years you have noticed you can customize the side bars and menus in your architecture drawing software, meaning you could have different menus, bars, views, etc open in those empty spaces

Thanks for the detailed review. The section that really got my attention was the part about having to move the monitor up or down depending on which portion of the monitor you are viewing for an extended period of time. I've always suspected that because of the vertical view of this monitor and the split in the middle, this pretty much "breaks" the golden rule of body/sitting ergonomics. Like you said, looking down or up for an extended period of time just isn't healthy so I definitely would need to account for this and whether or not I'd be comfortable with having to constantly move the monitor up and down.

Hey John! Thanks for sharing your detailed experience with the LG Dual Up monitor. Your insights are really helpful for anyone considering this display. I appreciate how you covered various use cases and your honesty about its suitability for your specific setup. It's great to know about the ergo stand, window management apps, and the built-in KVM switch - those are definitely useful features.
I'm curious, though, you mentioned that you plan to keep the monitor but not for this setup. Can you share more about how you intend to use it in the future? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.
Overall, your video was informative and well-presented. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your future content! 👍

@@JonImperial In my point of view, the right dimension of this screen is not a 27,6" one. Yes, it is but if you compare the surface of a true 16:9 27" to a true 16:9 27,6", your gain is only 4,5%.
But actually, the surface up with this screen is about 21% ! (comparing to a regular 27" 16:9). If you do some cut & paste and force the surface to be a 16:9 ratio, these surface is equivalent to a 29,75" 16:9 monitor.
Second point, have you tried to use in landscape orientation (18:16 instead of 16:18).

I'm getting this for a second programming monitor and general PDF viewing. I would not use this as a solo monitor. For video editing it might be a nice second monitor but seems most people like the wide timeline views so not sure this monitor will please many video editors. As for photo editing, if you don't care about color accuracy it can do the job but most serious users will want monitors that are optimized for that type of work.

Based on video appearance, I feel like these would be better if they were bigger, at least 32 inches if not 35-40 inches. Also, this is so close to vertical 5:4 that we might as well bring it, 4:3 AND 16:10 back properly. If you divide vert 5:4 in half, you get two 16:10, and if you divide vert 4:3 in half, you get two 3:2.
Also if you do this dual-up in 2/3 and 1/3 split, you get a big 4:3 section and a small 2.67:1 section, which you could then split screen two small 4:3 corners.

In terms of the height of the monitor, surely you should keep it so that bottom part of the monitor is at eye height, like it should be. Then you're just looking up at the top monitor for reference, as it is just mimicking a dual stacked setup.. still not ideal, but I certainly think it's the best way to use it.

It looks like a great option for work and the variety of ways you can organize your content make it a great alternative to running two wide monitors vertically stacked. Like you showed, customizing dock location may be useful. Even accounting for the integrated clamp stand I think this monitor is overpriced by at least $100. Even if you want to treat it like it's absorbing two monitors into one streamlined option, the point on price still stands, but it really is a tidy way to get a unique bit of visual real estate. A serious gamer will opt for something that does at least 120hz refresh, but it's a capable option for most types of games and will serve the needs of most for vintage console and computer emulation. Will also be good for server and CCTV use or splitting duties between different forms of information monitoring. Would not be a home theater choice.

I have an Nvidia setup in which I already have a 38" wide screen with a 1440p in vertical orientation next to it, and also a 4k movie projector on a wall nearby, so that's 3 displays. I also wanted to stack two small 1080p displays on top of each other on the other side of my main 38". This would have put me at 5 displays which would have required additional parts since Nvidia only allows for 4 displays normally. Using this thing instead of the 2 1080p displays is even better since it is just the one display, but with essentially two "small" 1440p monitors stacked on top of each other in functionality which I would even prefer to the 1080p, I was only wanting to get those for the actuall smaller size. But this is about the same size those two would be, so it really is ideal for me.

I went the exact opposite route with a Samsung 49”. Massive desk footprint, but after two months of using it everyday there is no coming back (ai use it for photo editing, video editing, post production, code etc.).
This form factor looks PERFECT for After Effects though, when you end up with hundreds of layers and don’t want to remember the shy ones. Or for coding, but coders often use portrait mode on a second screen (80 characters per line is still a thing).

I am a student and use split view very often.
When I am watching lectures, I have four tabs - lecture video recording, microsoft words for note taking, google for searching scholars and search engine for dictionary since I am not native to English.
I can do it by changing the windows back and fourth, but I was wandering whether it would be better to just stay on one window.
I have used apps like magnets, but it’s just a resizing the app rather than a true split view so when I maximize the video screen, it just overwhelms the whole page.
So I was just thinking of making two split views (4 apps on one window) for efficiency.

What's the gamut coverage? There's nothing on the Adobe RGB coverage on the LG website, that's a bad sign. Whenever a manufacturer is hiding that it's always because it's low.

@@JonImperial I doubt it's that high. That's Eizo territory. LG is doing a fine job hiding the facts. I'm guessing less than 75% Adobe RGB coverage here. @@JonImperial i'm commenting because the first one I saw was in person. they even had one for their laptop. the desktop had anti-glare coating, and it washed color out at the top of the monitor (fairly subtle, but why spend bank on a nice monitor with good contrast/color only to ruin it by shining light directly onto it? on their laptop with a glass screen, it lit up every fingerprint on the screen. absolutely terrible design. and light doesn't bend (on earth), so this could be solved with a plastic shelf like HID headlights in cars use to block line of sight to the monitor so the light can't physically make it to the screen, and it would have almost no discernible difference to the original design, but i've yet to see one do this
