    Thanks for the demo. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for more than 60 years. I am 81, in good health, and still very active. I have worn an Animus pump for about 16 years and will soon switch to the T Slim X2.

      @@FTFWARRIOR I was diagnosed on Friday, June 13, 1958. The doctor gave me a one-page type-written diet plan and told me I had a high risk of losing my legs or going blind by the time I was 40. That day, I bought food scales and began measuring my food at home. I was attending night school at the University of Alabama Birmingham, and I went to that library and checked out the Joslin Diabetic Manual, which I read cover to cover. The first ten years were the most difficult. I have been a Scout Master and hiked the mountains of the Pacific NW. I have cross-country skied in 6-ft deep snow, and I have built and slept in an igloo. Also, I have captained 40 to 50-ft sailboat cruises in the Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and the Grenadines. I received my BS in Engineering-Physics from the University of Oklahoma (1962) in the top 1 percent of my class. I received my MS and PhD in Nuclear Engineering (1965) on a fellowship. I say this not to brag, but rather to tell you that if you manage your diabetes, you will be the healthiest among your peers. I do not suffer from diabetes; I LIVE with diabetes.

      @bob cockrell I love your story it is amazing and so inspirational. I've had diabetes for 17 years diagnosed November 13 when I was 11 I am now 28. I have never used a pump or cgc but I am really considering. I try my best to control my diabetes and do a decent job but I feel a cgc and insulin pump could help a lot. I take health very serious and I eat very healthy, am a daily gym goer, athlete, and I practice yoga and meditation. I just really want to fine tune my blood sugar control and I find it very hard w just a meter and the insulin pins for constant in range blood sugars.

    Just want to thank you so much for this video. We did a saline trial this week on my 14 year old daughter, and you took all the fear out of it for me as we did the site change. I've been a type 1 diabetic for 30 years. Two years ago I was put in Libre 2 sensors. I asked about the pump they said had to see how I get in with Libre first. Asked my DSN again in January about pump. She told me to look at Omnipod, Medtronic and T Slum. All quite similar. I'm sick of injecting. I'm also a personal trainer and nutrition advisor. I'm in a wheelchair so need something I can manage. I think the T Slum would suit my needs. Thanks for the video.

      Sarah I had Omnipod for 5 years and started to have the pods leak after 3 years. I wanted to make the switch because the Tslim has different infusion set options. I figured I needed a longer cannula. I was hesitant to switch because I never had a tubed pump, but I’m so glad I switched! I’ve had the pump since February and in March my A1C was 6.7% down from 7.1%. I’ve been using the Control IQ update for 2 weeks and my average BG went from 150-160 to 120-130. I’m so happy with TSlim!! I use the 8mm TruSteel infusion sets and i really like them.

    Great video. Extremely informative. Currently researching pumps as I’ve been T1D for almost 40 years and always just been comfortable with doing it manual, but looking for more stability. I am still trying to decide what’s easier… manual or using a pump and having to do that process every 3 days. Logically, using a pump should be easier but I don’t find the manual way difficult. But having young kids now, life’s bit more hectic so it’s not uncommon for me to forget to take my lantus by a few hours. Thanks

      Also, if you throw an animal pump at an interior wall, the wall breaks not the pump. Not sure the same could be said for a touch screen pump.

      I'm 16 and I've been changing it by myself since I was around 9 years old. The reason it became easier to do for me is because I did it a lot and after a while it just became routine. The only advice I can really give is to do it a lot and make sure you know your stuff. If you fuck up, that's fine, you just need to practice.

      Hi Allison. I'm T1D for 47 years and have always hated needles! LOL not great for a diabetic, for sure. But I found it pretty easy to be less fearful by using the Autosoft 90 (or Autosoft 30) infusion set. These sets have an automatic inserter that inserts with just a click. I even close my eyes before I click it and, no problem! Ask your endo, or diabetes educator, to see if you can switch. It made a huge difference for me.

    • @effbloomy
      @effbloomy 4 роки тому +1

      @@spencermelton3181 Hi Allison, A good one is using an ice cube! Cooling down the area makes it hurt less. Really! Just make sure to dry your skin before using the inserter. The trick I used a lot was to place the needle and then lightly bounce (without actually lifting the needle off the skin) and then - poke. That worked the best for me. I know most people say fast is better, but I had trouble with that.
      There are a few tricks on the internet you can try but really, I recommend you speak with your pump educator. I found them to be the best source of info. And they'll be able to help you specifically and more knowledgeably. Let me know how things go for you.

I've used them for years and I know that if I pull back too hard, and try tofill it quickly, it gets thousands of tiny air bubbles. They will 'rise to the top' if I just remove the plunger and let the reservoir sit upright for a few minutes. Then, when I put the reservoir in the pump, and push the pump to get the drops of insulin to come out, I make sure and hold the pump so all that air is at the top and it pushes out of the pump first! In my case, yes it does. There are other options where there is a catheter that stays in your skin instead of a needle, but for an active person like myself, that plastic tubing is more prone to kinks, which can lead to the pump not being able to deliver insulin to you. So I personally decided to go with the needle, and honestly I"d say that about 99% of the time I can't even tell that its there!

    Great video! My T1D diagnosis was in 1963. I have worn many insulin pumps, including 4 Medtronic, the Asante SNAP (my favorite) and currently, the Animas Vibe, which replaced the Asante SNAP.
    The Animas Vibe warranty expires this November, so 2 days ago I attended the Cool Tools class at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a requirement for those getting a pump upgrade.
    Potential t:slim drawbacks include requiring extra time to fill the cartridge/bag, removing air bubbles, and the tubing "pigtail" that can catch on doorknobs and other devices. However, with Medtronic I had too many equipment issues (including recalls) and poor customer service, so I'm going with the t:slim.
    The Asante SNAP used a pre-filled glass Humalog cartridge, so there were no syringes and no drawing up insulin. In addition, the pump auto-primed in one second. Over the course of a year, the SNAP pump saved hours in prep time. I still miss that pump.

    • @FTFWARRIOR
      @FTFWARRIOR  6 років тому +1

      I do experience discomfort sometimes if I put aggressive pressure directly on the site (usually by accident haha). There are two main reasons that you will likely experience pain. One is that you may be hitting a nerve, second is that you may be rubbing muscle tissue the wrong way (more likely if you have low body fat). There are probably more reasons, but those seem to be the most common. I hope this helps!

    Can you tell me something though... it looks like the insulin cartridge is totally dark not see-thru like I'm used to, is that right? If so how can you be sure you have all the air out? I'm really picky about filling my current one and notice that if I let it rest for 10 mins before changeover there are always bubbles even though I think I got them all out already. I wouldn't trust a cartridge when I couldn't see it and verify a lack of bubbles!

      Note...air in the place of insulin in your tube/cannula is not good, but IF a small amount of air as in small bubbles in your reservoir get under your skin (*subcutaneously) it should not harm you. Taking air bubbles into your bloodstream (intravenously) is a different story.

    • @em_pen
      @em_pen 4 роки тому +1

      @@mmwwheeler The issue is missed insulin - an air bubble could replace an hours worth of basal insulin or reduce the dose you think you're taking for a meal. While it's no serious health risk to get bubbles where insulin should be, it is a risk (or at least, a pain in the arse) to miss insulin and have to deal with highs from it :(

    • @mmwwheeler
      @mmwwheeler 4 роки тому +1

      Em Penfold I understand and agree. My statement was intended to ensure people that if they did get a small amount of air under their skin that was in their insulin cartridge it would NOT harm them which was implied as not a good thing in the video.
