- Don't just practice scales. Practice melodic ideas that you could use in compositions or while improvising. I will demonstrate some ideas of how to do this.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel. I forgot to mention it at the beginning. I’m almost at 3 million. Let’s make it happen!
can I have the blue les Paul in the background plz plz plz
How often do you play acoustic guitar? I rarely see you use it here!
I appreciate you Rick.
2.99 M currently!!
How many are bots???
Um, I'd say that ANY scale sounds incredible with THAT guitar tone.
Rick, can I ask what your signal chain looks like? Sounds so good.
Give Mark Twain a sidewalk and some chalk and he’ll write amazing stories. Doesn’t matter what materials you use if you’re talented.
If Rick played my Teisco thru a Stander amp he'd still sound great. On the other hand, of I played that guitar I'd still sound like the mediocre schlub that I am!
@@garygratzer9670 I thought I was the only one. I too love Rick but I cannot stand his guitar tone. It seems too icy and cold to me with no warmth.
@@larryhall2805 gotta start somewhere
At about 6:30 of the video, when Rick says : "I have never played that sound before."
Those are the moments one is after as a musician.
That phrase he played sounded a bit like "Sweet Child of Mine" Or am I wrong?
3:18 - ths is what I call the Andy Summers Chord. He uses this shape in Message in a Bottle and Every Breath You Take.
I love it when you say, "Like that." Not because the video is over, it's that you have explained the idea completely.
Practicing like this will help your ear in real time so much better than mundane exercises, way more applicable. Great video!
The concept to break out of your ruts and stop playing the same scale patterns over and over probably has the added benefit of developing your skill as an improvisor and being more inventive on the fly. Thank you, sometimes the simplest concepts are breakthrough concepts.
That was an amazing video! I always walk away learning some new way to view the guitar!
"Practice something that sounds like music" awesome advice. Thank you sharing your wisdom Rick!!
I can only play the keyboard, but here I sit watching you practice on the guitar...and find myself enjoying it. Love your channel!
That "non musical" warm up could sound great in the right context but of course I'm a big Fripp fan
I was actually wondering if that was a veiled dig at Fripp :)
Jimmy Page used a variation of it in the Firm’s ‘Radioactive’, too.
@@scottrussell7423 to great effect too. My favorite part of the song
Its incredible how much power you have on the fretboard. If I had that i wouldn't ever put my guitar down. You earned your legendary skills
Takes a month off and his warm up is basically to write a song. Awesome.
4:24 - This reminds me of the lick Billy Howerdel uses during the verse of A Perfect Circle’s “The Hollow” if it were transposed.
I love that sound. Great lesson as always.
This is one of Rick’s best and most useful videos on this topic.
Such a great lesson, and doesn't matter whether you're brand new at it or an experienced musician, you can can take this one to heart. I've found there's really only two ways music comes to me - either it just pops in my head randomly and uninvited (and if so, better record it or tab it out before it's gone out of your head for good), OR you make some accidental discovery while warming up or practicing and go "wait a minute.. what did I just do and where can this take me?" I worked out a whole new tune once just sitting there practicing e phrygian dominant. Stumbled on some phrasing I liked while practicing that, and ended up with a 4 minute instrumental. :)
Long time watcher never commented… I play piano (as a hobby) and don’t read music… and I still love these instructionals. The way you demonstrate and don’t dumb down the technicals but make it relatable is great. 🤩🎸✨
Beato is an underrated guitar player.
Amazed at your career, your humbleness, and kind nature. Something we can aspire to. Thank you for having this channel.
Great video Rick! Your arpeggio ideas are always so smooth and tasty.
Very cool. I saw your short on the 2 notes per string practice technique and it was hard to overcome my “normal “ pattern for major scales. I’ll keep working on it. As usual, I find your videos useful and interesting.
2.99M Sooooo close! I wish there were more people like you Rick, you are the man! Thank you for sharing all this knowledge and not keeping it to yourself.
this is exactly how practicing turns into songwriting. everything you're doing reminds me of the stuff we were learning from each other in high school in the 80s.
Rick, this was truly AWESOME!
We definitely need much more content like this. This is the type of material that will get us out of ruts with being creative and enjoying the experience of playing guitar every day!
That short yesterday Rick was amazing. It’s great to have this explanation video.
This is one of my favorite videos (I watch all of them and have learned huge amounts of information about music theory and playing guitar) you've done about guitar practice and finding new sounds with extended positions and articulations! I have already learned the positions and have started practicing them and using them as springboard ideas to create new arpeggios for my own music. Thank you very much, Rick!
I love the sound of these scales or arpeggios or whatever you call them. I'm definitely incorporating these into my practice routine.
I found this challenging to follow along with my acoustic guitar in hand, but with each watching of the video it makes more sense. It's a beautiful motif that has a sense of descending and ascending at the same time.
Great like always.!!! thank you so much for shearing your talent.!
So thankful for your guidance!!
Sounds so good. Watched the short yesterday too and was feeling it. Noodling that sounds musical.
Outstanding workout, thank you, so much confidence moving notes..
Thank you sir as always great tutorials on scales 👍
Excelente, muchas gracias Rick
Not only does Rick do teaching videos like the one yesterday on haunting tones; he does videos showing you how he gets the ideas for his teaching videos! Brilliant!
Absolutely right great warm-up
So much great content! Well delivered lessons and in depth interviews with real question from a real musician. You are one hell of a guitar player! Blessings!
Rick, you are an excellent teacher. Love these lessons.
you are making me get back into guitar, i love these videos aswell as your mixing videos. thank you so much!
That's why I try to put an emphasis on tablature. when ever I get a chance to practice. your skill with scales and arpeggios is very impressive. that's an area where I could watch and learn a lot more from you. this is very good practice advice for people who don't have a lot of time to practice.
Brilliant, Rick. Will be coming back over and over until I can play the whole piece. Such interesting intervals. Thank goodness for UA-cam's playback speed control. Also liked the colored dot fretboard, very helpful.
Love this Rick! I've been trying to kickstart practicing in a mindful way again for months now. This is great way to bootstrap this for me.
Rick, thank you for constantly inspiring me and these examples are just simply the best thing for improving! Continued blessings and success as you give so much enriching ideas. YOU ARE THE BEST! 🙏❤🎸🎶🤘
Top tip, watch Rick’s videos to the end. The gem here is in the last minute or so, delightful!
Wonderful advice. Gonna practice ‘like that’ right now!
This breakdown is my favorite video.... because it is helpful for my understanding. Thx
I think that yellow guitar is one of my favourites, with your tasteful blue one coming in a close second. It looks so comfortable, and sounds great.
I watched this over my morning coffee then took it to the piano through several keys and some variations. Fun!
Dear Sir ! This is one of the best things i have ever seen in guitar practice !!!!!!!! Thank You !! GOD bless You !!
THE best new practice excercise I´ve been looking for! Thank You my friend!
Your Amazing Rick , Respect, thank you !
Rick, I really enjoy your explanations in this style "improvisation in the morning with musical sense"
I admit that your instagram videos left me wanting more because they were shorts, and that great contrast was what made me really enjoy this video. We would love for you to upload more content of this type
Playing along to your little practice excerpts has made me immensely more proficient.
I like having access to practice ideas like these so I can consistently change up and learn and expand my knowledge, all while enjoying the ride. And I finally subscribed.
Great video. I like this SO MUCH BETTER than the shorts videos cause you actually take the time to explain what we practice and why, while in the shorts-videos there's barely any context.
THANK YOU!!! Already immensely grateful after messing around with the concept for half an hour
It sounds beautiful.
This is great learning. Same for fitness - practice DIFFERENTLY/with variation.
WORLD CLASS
Your lessons are ALWAYS a win
Your phrases are so different that what I'm used to hearing, love this.
Man you a knowledgeable chap. Listening forever and never will acco.plish this stuff
Such cool ideas! Thank you Rick! I play harmonica and getting tips from other musicians on practice ideas always enhances my own practice ideas and options!
Great lesson and work out , thank you Rick ❤
Sooooo good Rick!!! Re-inspired me to tackle more exercise! Brilliant in your teaching abilities! 🥰🎸❤️
That is indeed musical, love the arpeggios. The first sequence is a song.
Your channel is the best guitar channel on UA-cam.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you Sir! This was really good!
0:14 Same here but than piano. Nobody ever understands, but it birngs me so much joy and as a classical player the amount of new stuff to explore and earn is endless.
Thank you for spicing up my practice Rick!
I've been in a rut practice wise and I'm totally going to try some of those ideas for practice... TY
Sounds amazing
Rick! I don't think I've ever heard anything so perfect. Beautiful! So many colored layers. Reminds me of the sunrise over the desert.
Brilliant, as always.
You gave the finger positions! Im on it! Its beautiful!! Thank you!
Thank you Mr. Beato for all of your wonderful lessons!
🤟😎🤟
⚡🎸⚡
I saw your short of this man.
Super melodic and a great workout too....i still am working on it...nice
Great tips Rick! Thank you.
Thank you so much 😊
thank you so much!
So happy you break it down here, I watch the short of this and loved these haunting sounds, More Haunting when possible 🙏
Love you Rick Beato!
You have me playing every day again..even just a little ... now i need to structure my practice... thank you!
Yes that's it ! I'm in the same position and after all those years hanging around at something else than guitars I'm starting all over. I realized I wasn't on the right track playing for almost a whole day and then doing nothing else during a whole week after that... exept staring at the guitar... Now I decided I'd play several short sessions (even only just a few minutes) in the same day, every day, because there are many benefits to that gym : in particular music keeps on working within you by subconscious channels. And another benefit is that the more often you put your arm forward to grab your guit, the less difficult it will be the next time...
Thank you, Rick!
Rick... That was great advise, that sound is a great song put it together..
Wow! Thank you! Good stuff! Thank you!
Great to see a guitar video from you! Love every video, but it's always nice to see variety!
great! great musical ideas! very inspirational! thank you so much!
Your Tone is Sweet!!
Thank You for all you do from Denver NC
Thank you Rick, I'm learning really a lot from especially this video.
Rick, always appreciate these tips. My Casio keyboard has built-in drills that are much like this. Very fun to play and gives me ideas on how to do additional work on my own.
Great practice - makes really fun!
love this share and technique! Rick bad ass giver to us all.
Quite inspiring, saw a lot of ways to use parts of the structure to roll into solos that I’d never considered before.
Sounds awesome
Rick, great video! For me this video is in the RB top five.
Thank you
That is beautiful.
Love your knowledge of all things music. Been here since you were just under 1 million subs. Here's to many many more great videos. Cheers from Canada.
Rick is seriously the GOAT on his insight and musical teaching.
This video made me buy your Beato Interactive Book. The way you practice this scale is how musical I’d like to make mine and hoping your book will help. Thank you for your lesson!
Those phrases are beautiful, and sound like an intro to something.
That is absolutely soul touching 💙
