Cycling London’s Bicycle Super Highways

- Since the debut of the first large Bike Superhighway routes in London two years ago, the results are impressive. The number of bicyclists entering Central London is approaching the number of cars. At rush hour 70% of all transportation over Blackfriars Bridge is bicycles. And the current administration has budgeted $169 million pounds per year towards continuing to build out their bike network and superhighways, according to Will Norman, London Mayor Sadiq Khan's Walking & Cycling Commissioner.
There are some drawbacks and criticisms. The lanes, although impressively wide, already can't contain the numbers of rush hour cyclists. The speeds of riders can be brisk, which can be troublesome to pedestrians and discourage new cyclists from trying the commute. And bike advocates say the network implementation needs to be sped up and connected more strongly so that "the brave" aren't the only ones out there.
But the visuals of cyclists being posted in clips on UA-cam and Twitter showing the riders streaming over the routes is breathtaking. I was there in 2015 and I thought then London had a healthy dose of bikes. So Streetfilms decided to take a quick look while in London on a Friday in June. We talked to some people on the government side, the advocacy & research groups and most importantly the riders themselves to get their take.
A Dutchman who lived in Surrey for 31 years, I applaud London for embracing and promoting the use of the bicycle as a main form of transport. I now live in Middelburg which is easy to navigate by foot or bike. No longer having a car, I adore my new life. Keep up the good work in London. (Perhaps other towns and cities in the UK will follow suit.)
This is a really uplifting film. Hopefully where London leads the rest of the country will follow. 👍
God I hope so, I was hoping that they'd call all the roads "G roads" as opposed to Motorways and A roads, B roads, C Roads... So I can easily find them on the signs and maps across the country, but some other cities do them differently.

So here I am 2 months later having learned that they will be renamed Cycleways!
Green Steve they should make it into an extremely known law that the routes are fast because they get you there fast, not that you should go down them at what would feel like a motorway speed.
I'd say at least 15 mph as 10 mph is too slow. We have somewhere to be too. Although if I want to go bombing along at 30 i can use the road
The name Super Highways is such a joke for something that is not 'Super !' and doesn't have characteristics of 'highway' (uninterrupted riding/driving) ! But it fits to the grandiose language that a narcissist would use. Cycleways is indeed a much better name.
@@TimpBizkit To use a commute path as a highway in a built up area with foot crossings e.a is risky. With a car you don't drive 100 kmh in town, a similar thing goes for bikes. 10 mph is a common pace for a city bike. 15 mph would be on the high side already. ( I guess your reasoning is why in UK 'race bikers' , like John Forrester, were never in favour of separate bike paths in the past, promoting 'vehicular cycling').

I did the same cycling in amsterdam when the infrastructure was not what it is today.

I went through London by bus in 2007, and London was not peticularly carfriendly. Slugriding. I felt like stepping out of the bus and walk besides it . Motorized traffic suffered severely because of lack of bicycle infrastructure. Amsterdam is way less car inefficient than for example Florence. People who for some reason really want or need four wheel transport must realize that a good infrastructure for bicycles makes cars allso go a lot faster. "Motorists" have a lot to gain. Every person on a bike is one car less on the road. Cyclepaths create space for the remaining cars.

Watching this, I cannot understand the negative comments of British people about bicycling in London.
You've made a start at least and those quiet streets look as safe and hospitable as any advanced bike city in Europe.

Great to see these things being built in the UK, as a northerner am naturally going to say what about the rest of the UK? But this is a great start and I understand Manchester is beginning to make strides too, however there is so much work to be done countrywide. At least we have started in a small and meaningful way in designing and prioritising our streets with travelling by two wheels in mind.
Bro I live in London and there are no cycle lanes whatsoever in my ''triangle'' i.e. work (Chiswick) - shops (Shepherds Bush) - home (Acton) ...so this is just publicising the couple of bike routes that there are and making it look like there are more. But yes I agree as a Midlander (not a Northerner, not a Southerner!) that as with most things there is too much emphasis on London. I tried cycling years ago in Birmingham and the few lanes there were a complete joke, they led you into the middle lane of giant roundabouts and just stopped, or one actually directed me against the flow of traffic in a one-way-street, there was a bus coming at me so I had to thrown my bike over the railing onto the pavement and jump over myself! After that I just rode on the pavement. Here in London I just ride on roads or sometimes through parks and actually it's no problem.

@@karter9219 Just googled that and found this B-ham Mail article - www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/cyclists-fume-cars-wheelie-bins-16406245 - but despite a couple of hiccups this is good news but like you say a lot more are needed, this is just one trajectory so the chances of you (a) living somewhere near that cycle superhighway and (b) needing to go somewhere i.e. work, shops, school with kids, which is along the same route, are pretty slim. A bit like the Midlands Metro which they have the cheek to call a ''network'' lol but it's just one line and only really useful to 1% max of the population in the West Mids, without more lines it was just a waste of money and imho is an unfinished project. I hope the same doesn't happen to the bike lane project. Btw when I lived in Bham from 2006-2009 it struck me that there were loads of places - generally along main roads with residential housing i.e. 1930s semis, that these had really wide pavements with grass and trees next to the road, with hardly anyone walking on them, as everyone living there needed a car to get to most places like supermarkets or work which were miles away, and what a shame it was that nobody though of building bike lanes along these...a bit utopian thinking at that time, it was after I had spent years living in Germany where there are loads of bike lanes and people riding bikes, and before moving to the Netherlands with even more of that. It will take decades to change the British mentality to see cycling as practical and to educate people to live healthy lifestyles in general, maybe in 50 years or so we will be like the Dutch or other Northern Europeans in this respect. You only really notice after living years abroad how unhealthy (and unhappy) so many Brits look, not just overweight but generally malnourished and with bad complexions etc.
London is so mich more populated (and more liberal) so not suprising that this happened there first.
There are some of these cylceway things in Nottingham, but not that much. Cities need good and cheap public transport (trams are good) and walking and cycling infrastructure. These things need to be widely accessible too.
Thanks for the video! I'm moving to London next year and having lived in The Netherlands I'm very much in bond with my bike so I needed to make sure that biking there is safe. Looking forward to cycle around the city of London!🌸
Why does all this stop at the end of zone 2? It could be argued that it is needed more in the outer boroughs where more people drive and drive faster (often seeing the speed limit as a minimum). Tories?
CS7 goes down to Colliers Wood in Zone 3.
These are good, but I note that they are mostly lanes that follow the existing road network. Roads continue to be the framework around which urban transport is designed. To truly revolutionize, planners need to forget about roads and think ‘Where would I put a cycle route if we didn’t have to put them next to the road?’ They did this in Beijing with one particular route that completely avoids the road for most part, taking a more direct path between its start and end points, because bikes can do that: they don’t need as much space, don’t need petrol stations along the way, etc.

They are fabulous. Well done to the planners, it has saved lives too! Not perfect yet and still a long way to go. But, a good start.
The main issue with cycling is actually how we see cycling as a whole topic. *We don’t immediately see it as a commuting tool. We see it as a ‘fun making’ exercise*.That means that roads like this are *rare* and that people choose to *sell Mountain Bikes, which have a 13% decrease* in *performance for cadence and pedal pressure, making people naturally more likely to become tired* if they use the bike to get to their location where they would *like* the *exercise* to take place. If we see biking as a way to genuinely get around then it should be made necessary for the government to introduce a section of embassies which will become *THE ECONOMIC CONSULATE FOR BRITISH CYCLING*.
I’d love to be a part of this, so hopefully one day this can be installed into legislature and planning LAW.

Thing is if folk cycled more often they'd get used to that extra effort in no time... If you really wanted to excercise on a bicycle everyone would ride BMX bikes around pump tracks. Or a heavy single gear around the moors. People just don't care. They just wanna ride a bike and will buy the tool best able to provide options which more often than not is gonna be the old mountain bike, the bike you can ride ANYWHERE.

Outer boroughs of London still lack this type of segregated cycle paths, unfortunately. I hope one day provision will be made so that even young children can safely cycle to school, instead having to ride on sloped pavements (risking to lose balance) or on the road alongside lorries and skip trucks, which even myself as an adult I find intimidating, never mind a 4-year old wobbling to school on a small bike with training wheels.

Many people wear helmets in London even on dedicated cycle lanes while in Holland, I don't see many
Separate cycle lanes are short so when you go on regular roads you have many speed bumps and pot holes so wearing a helmet is best.

Talking about Quietways and showing CS7 is a little confusing but at least it's the back streets of Elephant and Castle rather than the A3 bit.
I am a shiny new adult cyclist in the London suburbs and infrastructure here is not good. They threw in some cycle lanes but they're interrupted by parking so a bit pointless and just there to meet quota. It's going to take me a while to build confidence on the roads round here, especially as I (deliberately) opted for pootling along at low speeds bike as opposed to a road bike. Ideally there'd be space (literally and figuratively) for all cyclists, for the slow, old and young up to your speed kings and queens.
They seem to cycle very fast there.
8:17 Dutch cyclists seem to go slower - more like the 10mph mentioned as "ideal" - also the gender split there seems more 50/50
@ferkemall 12 mph the e-bike kit I'm installing will do triple that - Bafang 750w mid drive with 52 tooth chainring on a 7 speed 32-11 cassette, though I won't use it that fast down a busy bike lane. I don't even need the motor to do 12 mph although it will be nice on a hill.
It would be awesome to see a 2 x 3 lane "motor" way for bikes with the granny lane, the weekend warrior lane and the Lance Armstrong lane on either side
In the Netherlands the lanes are wide enough to accommodate a doped up Lance Armstrong overtaking a granny on a mobility scooter. Although he'd have to hurry as disability vehicles are limited to 28 mph there..

It's great to hear about all this extra investment in infrastructure and i've noticed a huge change since the Olympics in 2012. But can anyone tell me why London is building bi-directional bike lanes in the city, when that goes against best practices set by the Danes and the Dutch who are much more experienced at this than us? Also, we need to join up more of this network and add more bike parks at stations like the Dutch do. We've come so far, but have a long way to go!
Bidirectional bike lanes take less space and are cheaper. You find a lot of them in Netherlands when space, money and/or bike traffic are limited.
@@tmnvanderberg Ok, that makes sense. Doing things on the cheap is not great, but I understand the pressures to save money. I wonder how many years it will be though before they wish they'd invested a bit more and done it right first time? On the space issue...I haven't studied it in detail but I would imagine the savings would not be much. 6 inches at most? I know we are very tight for space in the UK, so I can imagine situations where nothing else would fit, but it doesn't seem like you're gaining a lot.
Uk authorities will go for the cheapest option in general, no matter how small the saving is relatively. And this probably means only one side of the road is under construction creating less disruption.

I guy I work with moved to Canada because of bicycles. Didn’t like how things in London were transforming. As a guy that wants to ride, I wish my city would do the same as we have very little infrastructure. He thinks I’m nuts. And said if we do, he’ll move again
Some people love their cars. I have a few relatives like that.
As with cars, the more cycles on the cycle track, the slower people will ride. The key is building a large network that is useful for riders. Education, as well as official "pacing" riders, will bring down the speed to 10-15 MPH, which is most energy efficient.

I find if the duration would be just 15min longer all trips would be so much easier. I usually end up paying extra by only a few minutes, so annoying.

Tory Boy ~ how is it a waste of money? The city of London is packed out with tons of traffic which is at a standstill during rush-hour. This gives the people another option for transport in the city and it takes people off of crowded trains and also reduces the number of cars on the street. On top of that, this will also reduce health problems which can drain on the medical system and makes more productive individuals when they do not have certain health problems. I can’t imagine how you think it’s a waste of money.

15 mph speed limit is more realistic indeed. 10 mph is indeed very usual in Dutch cities, but those (old) one-way bike paths are pretty narrow.
Given the frequency of rain and cold in England, the Tube and buses are also vital.

I was enjoying that until the guy started talking about Social Justice. We need more upright-style bikes and fewer helmets to encourage people to cycle in a more enjoyable leisurely way. This can only be done by really putting our whole will into creating interconnected cycling routes across the whole of London. Also, more priority at junctions needs to be given to cyclists and pedestrians.
The idea that having to wear a helmet is discouraging people from cycling in the UK is laughable.
@@verygoodbrother When Australia introduced compulsory helmets for cyclists in the 1990s, the number of cyclists dropped by 36%. You can check the statistics for yourself. Virtually no one in Holland wears a helmet, yet they have the greatest number of cyclists in the world per population and they are the safest country in the world in which to cycle.

In Holland people don't wear helmet because the infrastructure is there for safe cycling.
When we did a study in london (university project) people were not put off by helmets. They more concerned about lack of safe cycle paths, bike theft, lack of bike storage and lack of showers at work. These are the main barriers to cycling uptake not helmets.

If you re-read my original comment, I said we need to improve road infrastructure. People in this country have been brainwashed into thinking helmets make things safer (they don't except for high speed or downhill cycling). I know several people like myself who would stop cycling if we were forced to wear helmets, so you must have missed us out in your survey. I'm hoping the increase in Boris bikes in cities like London will finally thwart the helmet fascists and jobsworths who want to control every area of our lives.

The guy who is against drop bars and thinks 10mph is ideal is absolutely wrong. Flying into work is what got me cycling and kickstarted a fitness journey - I know so many others with the same story. It’s not just men either, plenty of fast females on road bikes and there’s nothing wrong with riding hard as long as you’re respectful of others and keep safe.

I like to ride fast when I'm on my road bike but I don't think that's viable in a busy city cycling lane used by people of all ages.

@@tmnvanderberg The point is - central London transport links during commuting times are hectic, including 5 metre wide cycle lanes, and the overwhelming majority of users during those periods are adults riding to or from work, a very many of whom doing so as fast as they're able (as illustrated in the video). We have a different culture here than in NL, let's not pretend otherwise.

I like the Dutch and Danish cycling culture more, regular clothes and not that high speed is the way to go.
PS: I see so many helmets that it makes me think it's unsafe, in the Netherlands the only people using helmets are tourists, BECAUSE the infrastructure is safe.

The Netherlands has a high bicycle accident rate, it makes no difference whether the infrastructure is safe. Dutch people don't wear helmets because they don't think they look cool, which is a childish reason. And Amsterdam and Copenhagen are like villages compared to London.

London is an absolute anthill. The Undergound is packed like a sardine can and the traffic is just deadlocked. Anything to increase the flow is welcome, and bike lanes do that. Londoners are pretty scary riders though. They carry their work close in backpacks and traffic is fast and dense. The first time I saw it I thought I was looking at a cross country race or some event like that. It was just a normal commute.

What do you mean? You don't understand why you as a pedestrian/motorist would benefit from cyclanes and therefor don't want others to have them?
Every person on a bike is a person out of their car and thus not in front of you. Every person on a bike and out of their car is more fresh air to breath.
Building more car lanes isn't going to make the streets less crowded (not that there is even space for more lanes), getting people out of their car and on a bike is. Why is building more lanes not going to make it less crowded? Well lets think about it, if you make driving faster, more people will do it and you're back to square one. And if you keep building more and more lanes you end up with Los Angels like situations. Still bumper to bumper traffic for miles on end, but now 12-15 lanes of it.

What a load of shit. If you want people cycling actually make it safer. There are hardly any safe cycle paths in central London. Junctions, poor infrastructure, tourists just walking in the way, cars turning in, super slow tourists on bikes, narrow lanes.. road works seeming popping out of no where

Having used these super highways, and regularly cycling into London they really are not a solution. If your on a road bike….It’s safer on the roads most the time

Because it is quick and free. Also the people who’ve lost their license are the people who have never cycled in their lives and never will do. Also outside of London there are very few cyclists

Wouldn't think UK weather would be suitable for bike riding, except for those 10 days of sunshine we hear about! We don't think of cycling as a primary mode of transport, rather a recreational activity. Given that many people live anywhere from 10 to 50km from work, you'd be just about dead from heat exhaustion and sunburn here if you rode every day.
Don Coleman in general London is a city you don’t drive into unless you have to (the suburbs are fine but the centre is gridlock and there isn’t anywhere to park). I usually take the train into London because it is quite far but I commute by bike almost every day as it’s only two miles in each direction.
@@doncoleman4938 It doesn't rain very much at all in London, I have only been riding in light rain twice in the last 3 months and commute every workday . I lived in Netherlands for 10 years and rode a bike every day, but there it rains a hell of a lot and I don't mean drizzle except in July-August, it's very windy too, and the rain is often freezing, plus you always get snow there, but still you see girls out on bikes in normal clothes, even with skirts and high heels. They're just tougher than most Brits, except for maybe Geordies lol
I'm from London, in my 40's and have never had a license. My parents didn't have a car when I was growing up and neither did their friends. I think the vast majority of people driving in London are driving from outside of London. A car is not needed here, you can get everywhere by bus and tube for less than you would spend on parking a car.

Tory Boy No. They don’t. But even if it were an income stream to be spent on roads alone(which it isn’t), it would be fair. Cycling is by far the cheapest form of transport for the user and the City itself, it doesn’t produce any air pollution-which is causing a health epidemic for Londoners.
Cycling produces far less damage to roads, creates safer streets at lower speeds, eliminates heavy noise pollution and is a massive health benefit to all users (saving potentially millions to the NHS).
It comes down to what kind of city London wants to be, one for people or one for vehicle traffic.
Of course there will always be people who need to use the roads, but this is a real advancement towards a London for everyone.
Maybe you should give the cycle a go? you might even enjoy it!

Tony boy you are such an idiot. Road tax arent spent for road only. The government spend it to different things like healthcare, infrastructure, etc. Cyclist pay tax and every person in the uk. Dont say that tge road is only for motorists or cars or bus... It seems you dont know whats happening to our taxes here in this country.

A car causes the same wear and tear as 65,000 cyclists so why should cyclists pay when electric cars don’t?
