  • Sergei Nikolaevich Bulgakov (1871-1944) was a Russian Orthodox theologian, priest, philosopher and economist who was elected to the Duma, a professor in Church Law and Theology, and helped to found l’Institut de Théologie Orthodoxe Saint-Serge in Paris. He is a complex character who lived during a particularly turbulent period of Russian history. He faced accusations of heresy for his teaching on sophiology, but his work on what has been called “a Christian theory of cultural activity” has been seen as anticipating Radical Orthodoxy’s postmodern, metacritical methodology as well as its objective to “out-narrate” the secular by showing how the Christian tradition corrects the nihilism present within the logic of modernity.
John Milbank founded the radical orthodoxy movement. His work crosses disciplinary boundaries, integrating subjects such as systematic theology, social theory, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy, political theory, and political theology. He first gained recognition after publishing Theology and Social Theory in 1990, which laid the theoretical foundations for the movement which later became known as radical orthodoxy. John Milbank has named the Russian sophiological tradition, particularly the work of Sergej Bulgakov, as an intellectual ally and his interest in Bulgakov has been developing since at least 2002.video is about My Movie 10

It wouldn't be a John Millbank vid without bad audio and video. And yet, it's still great. Thank you.

You cannot talk about Orthodoxy without framing it within the Essence/ Energy reality of Orthodox belief.

Origen of Alexandria makes a beautiful case for Creation being eternal. He says that the scriptures declare that God is Lord forever. The question then is who is he Lord over for all eternity? He surely cannot be Lord over himself so creation was always there before God forever. I don't know what other Christians make of this.

I wonder what value all of this theological speculation is when Christianity is in serious decline in the Western world? There is an appalling disconnect, I would say, between the educated Christian elite (Milbank, Williams, D B Hart, etc) and the ordinary Christian layperson- and then, worse of all, an abyss between both of these and the surrounding non-Christian secular culture.

But hasn't there always been a disconnect between the elite and the rest of culture? The average medieval peasant didn't know his Aquinas but would have held to a set of Christian folk beliefs. Granted, in the west we are experiencing a decline in Christianity, but the same gap between different levels of culture remains, even if we were to take an atheistic or secular moral philosopher as our example.

Apropos of the "serious decline," Christianity has necessarily become individualized so that the internalization can allow all the remnants to carry it forward. When all the churches have been properly cleaned out, we will see what is left standing.... meanwhile, continue to await Sophia!

Regarding the decline of Christianity, I see this theological speculation as a clear sign of health. The protestant churches are finally shaking off _sola fide,_ even. The current generation of protestant pastors needs to retire first, but once that happens the full effect of the "new perspective on Paul" will be felt all over the place. It's already dominant in seminaries (and for good reason). Exciting times :D

Non Orthodox are less critical of Bulgakov because he suits their theological agendas and their promiscuous ecumenism. I find it kind of insincere.
