Great video! What I could summarize as core ideas:
*Reason for Adding Fruit:* The inclusion of fruit was part of an experiment related to the "lean mass hyper-responder" theory and the lipid energy model. This theory suggests that in a low-carb state, cholesterol levels can vary based on carbohydrate intake. By adding fruit (specifically apples), Dr. Baker aimed to see if this would affect his cholesterol levels. However, he observed no significant changes.
*Experiment Outcome:* Dr. Baker noted no difference in his cholesterol levels after adding fruit to his diet. He speculated that his body composition at the time might not have been lean enough to see an effect. He also mentioned experiencing some gut irritation from the fruit, leading him to discontinue its inclusion.
*Broader Perspective on Diet:* Despite being a strong advocate for the carnivore diet, Dr. Baker is not dogmatic about it. He emphasizes experimentation and finding what works best for individual health and fitness. He acknowledges that he occasionally diverges from the strict carnivore diet.
*Lean Mass Hyper-Responder Explained:* This concept, developed by Dave Feldman, identifies individuals with specific cholesterol and triglyceride levels in a low-carb state, suggesting a possible protective effect against heart disease. However, Dr. Baker stresses that more research is needed to fully understand the implications of high LDL cholesterol levels in healthy individuals.
*Personal Observations on Carbohydrates and Performance:* Dr. Baker discusses his experiences with carbohydrate consumption in relation to physical performance and recovery. He suggests that while carbs can enhance performance, their impact varies widely among individuals, depending on factors like underlying health issues and personal goals.
*Carbohydrates for Athletes:* For athletes or highly active individuals, Dr. Baker acknowledges the undeniable performance benefits of carbohydrates. However, he advises moderation and consideration of personal health and dietary tolerance.
*Nutritional Nuances of Meat:* The discussion touches on the quality of meat, including the benefits of grass-fed and pasture-raised options. While Dr. Baker supports regenerative agriculture for environmental reasons, he notes that health outcomes between grain-fed and grass-fed meat consumption are not significantly different in his observation.
*Fish and Other Protein Sources:* Although the focus is often on red meat, Dr. Baker doesn't dismiss the value of fish and poultry, suggesting that a variety of protein sources can be beneficial.
*Conclusion:* Dr. Baker highlights the importance of individual experimentation with diet. He stresses that while the carnivore diet works well for many, it's crucial to remain open to adjustments based on personal health needs and performance goals.

There was a story not long ago about a guy who was floating around in the ocean in a life raft for months. He began catching fish but discarded a lot of the 'gross' parts that did not look appealing to him. After some time, he noted that he began to crave, for reasons unknown to him, the fish's eyeballs. Like, he suddenly was attracted to them and he had strong urges to eat them. Long story short, his body naturally identified the need for Vitamin K, and instructed his body to crave it. I treat my carnivore diet in this way. If I crave beef, or chicken, or bacon, one day over the other, I go with it. I noticed my I had daydreams about strawberries and blackberries, and I took that as a hint. Whenever I crave them, I have a little. This happens to me with honey sometimes too. My body is telling me what it needs, and I roll with it. I feel a lot better as a result.

@blubblurp You should begin with the protein and then with natural sweets like honey and fruits. After your body get enough protein it wouldn’t want to eat lots of sweets. There are studies which show that body needs specific amount of protein daily. If you eat meat, eggs, … first your body doesn’t ask for other foods in big amount. If you begin with chips (as example) the body want to eat so much from that till the needed amount of protein ist filled up. As the amount of protein in chips is low you must eat lots of them to get the protein your body needs. Look into “mood cure”

Thanks Thomas for another great interview. I started following Shawn's work in 2017 I went carnivore for a year and lost 30 kgs. While its not a huge amount of weight it had lifechanging effects clearing up a number of allergies asthma, eczema, hay fever and sinus. I'm now a nasal breather instead of a mouth breather giving me a good nights sleep most nights. Nowadays I tend to go between intermittent carnivore and keto.
We live in an area of the Wide Bay, Queensland, Australia in which a great amount of avocados, macadamias and blueberries are grown and I incorporate these with our homegrown meat, chicken and eggs. Any allergy flare ups and I revert back to carnivore immediately then slowly bring whole foods back in. This combined with intermittent fasting long distance mountain biking and resistance training has me felling the best I've ever felt in my 55 years.. While I live with depression every day of my life this lifestyle and a good nights sleep really has had the most profound effect on me as long as I stick to it. Modernity really was slowly killing me. Thank you Shawn Baker.

Carnivore has been life changing. My allergies of 48yrs disappeared 3yrs into CV. But, I will always say that if humans would just cut out all processed foods, eat animal protein/fats, fruits and veggies, big medical would go out of business. We need to get on the page of doing what's right for each individual. If Vegans want to eat Vegan, if Carnivores want to eat Carnivore, so be it. Stop bashing each other about how we choose to eat that we feel is right for us, at that moment. In the summer, I eat some fruit, only what is in season. And I pick low oxalate fruits, because all those darn high oxalate superfoods did a number on me. I'll be dumping oxalates till I move onto greener pastures.😅

Maybe, maybe not. From what I've understood it's mainly down to lower caloric intake driving protective factors. Eating whole foods that are satiating makes that much easier.
Fat and protein is satiating, but so is sheer volume. There's a point to look at saturated fat as a factor as well. There's sort of an S curve so below say 8% of caloric intake has no increased risk and 12% maxes out the added risk. Going beyond that by eating ground beef every mean, while being in a healthy caloric range and lean is probably still far healthier than one that has below 7% but is fat off of processed food, eating 3500 calories a day and sedentary.

I did carnivore for 90 days. Lots of high fat beef steaks, ground beef etc. I was adding plenty of salt. It was okay for a little while, but i started nonstop cramping, my sleep was horrendous, i had major heart palpitations and ended up in the ER with dangerously low potassium levels. Some people can do pure carnivore and be okay, and do very well. Other people CANNOT. Adding a moderate amount of fruit changed EVERYTHING and I feel better than i ever have in life. Autoimmune skin conditions reversed, best energy and sleep of my life etc. Many of you will "just take electrolyte supplements" but then you wander into the exact same territory as the vegan dogma. "Just take b12 injections". NO the whole point of the food you eat is to get everything you need NATURALLY. Fruit is the answer for those who body cannot handle the extreme restriction. (I still believe in the benefits of pure carnivore depending on your situation, this just worked wonders for me)

    • @davidgmillsatty1900

What kind of lifestyle do you have with respect to sports or training? Most carnivores are ambush predators. Cats sleep 16 hours a day. Dogs sleep 12. If you’re going to try to be as strong as an ox or run like a mustang, then you probably are going to need carbs. But the average person doesn’t do that. The average person hates exercise for the sake of exercise. I have been low carb (50 g per day) since 1995 and near zero carb since 2020 (10 or less). I have never had issues. I am not an exercise freak although I was a really good athlete in my youth. I never could do exercise for the sake of exercise. I exercise minimally. Now I sprint per Dr Sean O’mara. I am 73 and very healthy for my age. My life expectancy was 66.5 when I was born. I have outlived many of my peers. And I have had good health. Doctors actually listen to me now.
I would argue that nuts are better than fruit. When I eat carbs, I eat pecans which are high in fat, medium in protein and low in carbs. But there are nuts that do have quite a bit of carbs. Nuts, when stored properly can be eaten for long periods, unlike fruit and it is more likely our ancestors consumed more of them for that reason.

    • @LauraB.335
      @LauraB.335 2 місяці тому +14

It sounds as if you were low in electrolytes, not carbs. I’m not saying don’t eat fruit, but if you were low in potassium, then potassium is what was needed. There are carnivores who need electrolytes. Rebekah Heishman is an example. She has now started to add things back in, but due to health conditions she was pure carnivore for at least a year to heal her system. She always needed to take electrolytes, though.

    • @TwiztedFingers
      @TwiztedFingers 2 місяці тому +8

Sounds like you already had a serious issue with your potassium levels before you started. Steak has plenty of potassium. Many people are trying carnivore because they are sick. My sister has an autoimmune disease that would flare up instantly if she ate fruit. Most people today have some type of metabolic dysfunction. Metabolic dysfunction can mess up all kinds of stuff until your body heals and starts working correctly. It can take up to a year to truly convert your system to running efficiently on the carnivore diet. There is a unique process each person is going to go through with their conversion. As your body heals and dumps the garbage that has been stored in your fat stores, you might need extra electrolytes. If you exercise a lot you might need more electrolytes. Taking electrolytes helps many in the conversion process. There is nothing dogmatic about taking electrolytes. I found them helpful during the first 6 months and didn't need them after that. Do what works for you, but "NATURALLY" is not an option for many people.

But being a hyper carnivore is not the same as an obligate carnivore. The carnivore community today believes that we are obligate carnivores and that is where the confusion comes in. However, it's always been about horses for courses in my mind. This has always been an elimination diet, used in medicine for generations, before coming to the mainstream attention. Sometimes people just stick to this because it works and get everything we need, and sometimes people do it for a few months or longer before adding foods back in to check tolerance levels. I give glory to God for pointing me this direction. It has benefitted me greatly and I am blessed that there have been learned people out there with content such as Dr Baker's, Dr Berry's, and Dr Chaffee's, for information and guidance without the dogmatic approach.

An issue with eliminating something from your diet and then adding it back in later to see how you react to it it is that when you add it back your gut most likely no longer has the bacteria to process it like it had before. So it's tough to tell if that particular food is an issue for you or your gut not having the proper bacteria in it to process it is the issue. Same way a vegan can become super sick when adding meat back into their diet. They can't process it like they could back when they ate meat so in the short term they'd think "well obviously meat is bad for me because it's making me sick" when in reality that's not the truth.

The key takeaways from Dr. Shawn Baker's discussion on adding fruit to his carnivore diet and his broader dietary philosophy include:
    1. **Experimentation with Diet:** Dr. Baker's inclusion of fruit in his diet was an experiment to explore its impact on cholesterol levels, demonstrating his willingness to test and adapt dietary practices based on health outcomes rather than adhering strictly to dogma.
    2. **Individualized Nutrition:** A central theme of the discussion is the importance of personalizing one's diet. Dr. Baker advocates for experimenting with different foods and dietary patterns to discover what best supports an individual's health and performance goals.
    3. **Lean Mass Hyper-Responder Concept:** Dr. Baker explains this concept, which suggests that individuals on low-carb diets may exhibit specific cholesterol and triglyceride profiles. This idea contributes to a nuanced understanding of cholesterol's role in health, especially among those who are metabolically healthy.
    4. **Carbohydrates and Athletic Performance:** While acknowledging the benefits of carbohydrates for energy and performance, Dr. Baker notes the potential for adaptation to low-carb diets among athletes. This adaptation may change their carbohydrate needs and utilization.
    5. **Quality of Meat and Diet Flexibility:** Dr. Baker discusses meat quality, including grass-fed versus grain-fed, highlighting that significant health improvements can be observed with all types of meat. He promotes a practical approach to meat consumption that considers personal health, environmental impact, and accessibility.
    6. **Health and Diet Philosophy:** Dr. Baker's approach is non-dogmatic, emphasizing health improvement and the efficacy of diets as primary concerns. He is open to dietary flexibility and encourages others to be experimental and find what works best for them, whether within a carnivore framework or through incorporating a wider range of foods.
    7. **Nutritional Nuances:** The discussion underscores the complexity of nutrition science, particularly regarding cholesterol, dietary fats, and the interplay between diet, health, and athletic performance. Dr. Baker calls for a deeper understanding of these nuances to better tailor diets to individual needs and health outcomes.

For me fruit causes cravings. I want carbs, something sweet and I don’t even like sweets. I’m a salty crispy person. I am from Dr. Baker’s state and we live in the Yakima Valley where there’s just a ton of fruit. In fact we ship it to where Dr. Baker is from.. I do eat some strawberries from my own garden and blackberries. But I just nibble when I pick them, I don’t eat handfuls. And then, when watermelon comes in season of boy. It makes me want more and more. I found myself gaining weight last year when I was eating the fruit all summer. They always say moderation. MSM is simply amazing.
Also combining with collagen, vitamin c and fish oil, but if I had to only pick 2 of these 4 supplements for joint and bone pain, I would take MSM and fishoil.
But I still do believe all 4 together creates an amazing synergy for joint and bone health and overall improved recovery from workouts.

I don't understand, is it mentally weak not being able to handle the fruit along with the meat, without binging on crap? Or is it mental weakness to even stray from a proper carnivore diet in the first place?
Are you saying we should be mentally stronger and just eat meat + fruit without any other cheating? Or, are you saying we should be mentally stronger and just not stray from carnivore at all?
Some will claim the real weakness is being unable to handle anything but strict carnivore, that true mental mastery would allow for carnivore + fruit (or other "good" carbs). This school of thought would say you should be, immune to getting triggered by carbs, that you should be able to limit yourself to only the good ones, while still eating primarily meat.

The longer I was on strict Keto/Carnivore the flatter I began to feel and my strength was lagging. Add to that my Libido was diminished. It was also interesting that my fasting glucose was rising, particularly after a hard workout. Yes I’m aware of Gluconeogenesis.
Eventually I came across some information detailing the negative effects of a keto diet/ carnivore diet for some people. Out of curiosity I had my testosterone tested, and while my total was good, 750, for a 60 year old, my free was at the bottom of the normal range and my SHBG was high.
After I added the honey and fruit, I retested and my free was higher, SHBG lower and my fasting glucose down, particularly following a workout.
At this point I do three tablespoons of raw honey in the morning and wit very few exceptions that are my carbs for the day. It works for me, might not for others

For me the carnivore diet brings the testosterone level to 27 nmol/L but SHBG level is crazy high wt about 65 nmol/L (which is about double than the average level) and free testosterone of 15 pg/ml.
Once I introduce some carbs here and there (fruits, vegetables, some grains, potatoes) the SHBG goes to 30-35 nmol/L, total testosterone stays at 20-24 nmol/ L but my free testosterone goes to 20 pg/ ml.
For me the low carb diet is the best. I have some days when I am fully carnivore and some other days when I eat 100-150 g carbs, while rarely I eat pizza or something else.

Shawn, diving into fruits after ruling the carnivore kingdom? Bold move. It’s like stepping into unknown territory to find what truly works. Reminds me of a principle from the Gospel - it’s not just about following what we’ve always known, but being open to the paths God lays before us, even when they’re unexpected.
Just like adding fruit to your diet, sometimes it’s the shifts in our routine that bring us closer to understanding greater truths. Paul had his road to Damascus moment; it completely changed his direction but not his ultimate goal. It’s about fine-tuning our lives and aligning more with the bigger picture God has for us.
Keep exploring, Shawn. In the end, it’s not just about physical health but aligning every part of our lives with the truths that stand the test of time.

Too much fat and carbs together is not a good idea I suppose. So if I add 100 gr for example, how much fat should I eat? It’s not going to be keto anymore, so I’m confused a bit.
