He created Dennis Pennis which was the precursor to Ali G. He filmed the entire show while on speed. I know a few people who were in rehab with him and I think he's stayed sober.
As a Juventus fan through n through, my first ever live football match with my Dad was at the Highbury on December 4th 2001. We lost 3-1 but Highbury stood out by how unique it was, I will never forget the amazing atmosphere it brought especially walking through the streets to get to the ground, something that is missing in today's modern grounds.
Yeah i loved highbury and miss it, but to really be looked at as a modernized big club we simply had to move on. Emirates isnt as bad as some other new stadiums
No we wouldn't have. Almost half thd capacity of the Emirates. The one and only way we'd compete at the top is if the tickets to watch were even more extortionate than the Emirates-thats why the decision was made to build a new ground in the first place. Ticket prices at Highbury were already rising to the annoyance of fans.
I loved standing on the Northbank in the mid 60's. Great atmosphere and good crowds! Family moved up north in '68 but I still managed a few visits to Highbury! I was at Wembley behind the goal when Charlie George hit the winner in 1971 against Liverpool and again I got to Wembley to see Alan Sunderland's winner against Man Utd. Still watch them when I can. Greetings from Thailand! COYG!
There's very few football stadiums in the UK that actually have any architectural merit: Ibrox, maybe Villa Park. Highbury had more flair and soul than 99% of British grounds put together. An extraordinary one-of-a-kind. Such a shame they left.
This was the greatest stadium in the whole of Britain to play football at. It had the most history of any other and it was just absolute class, it was a very special place to go and not only has Arsenal FC become obscenely redundant of charecter since they, insaneley, knocked it down but London as a city has also. The end of an era for the City of London. We should have stayed there and made the capacity as high as possible, perhaps would have got it to 48 to 50 thousand instead of moving to the sxxt hole across the road and heaping all this misery upon us. Arsenal FC the very first top UK Football Club to be bought by the Bankers and sunk by them.
@@john-perrybentley2649 Highbury the only football ground in the world to have 2 grade 2 listed stands. Old Trafford doesn't even have one. Old Trafford might have size but Highbury had style. Probably missed on yerself!
they didnt knock it down as such..it was turned into apartments in the same shape as the stadium with a park where the pitch was and it features a lot of arsenal stuff..its called highbury square and robert pires (gunners legend) bought two apts.
Still miss that place, my 1st game there was the 4th Dec 88 against Liverpool when it cost me 2 or 3 quid to stand in the North Bank and the programme was 60p.
It was perfect ive been to both Emirates aswell at highbury the players where 5 ft away from u n the Emirates impressive expensive loud but Highbury where my heart Will always lay❤
Ironically the new Arsenal stadium is a 'shopping centre' and not a million miles away from how Chelsea stadium turned out - cash cow. Luxury over priced flats probably built on that land now. Shocking country.
Stamford Bridge has much more character than the Emirates. Just the fact Arsenal's new stadium is named after a United Arab Emirates airline tells you everything you need to know about it.
I grew up watching games played at Highbury on telly with scenes of steep packed terraces behind the goals and poking its head over the corner of the ground next to the North Bank, old brick face double storey houses and bare winter trees against the backdrop of a miserable but charming grey sky. It was so English and nothing like anything I would see in the country I grew up in. When I lived in the uk a few years ago, I only went to one live game - at the Emirates. I would compare the experience to visiting a Mcdonalds or Topshop in a different country. Generic and pretty much identical to every modern ground I have visited at home I was cold, bored, and felt so far away and removed from the action on the pitch. The only noise came from the away fans.and even they seemed bored.
They tried but couldn’t do it as the East and West stands are “Art Deco” listed buildings. They revamped the North Bank and the Clockend but with all seater stadiums coming in it didn’t provide the capacity needed.
you were fools to leave Highburry. There was on two stands possible to make it bigger. Iz could be built up to 50 000. or more. It is an amazing cultural sports tradition and compressed atmosphere, with this nice corner views on the neighbourhood, giveing the playground direct contact and connection to the community and that gave the stadium and club strenght. The new stadium has no soul , an instant steril stadium, with big video walls, like many others. Modern money nothing else. Greetings from Croatia
I wish that West Ham had renovated Upton Park instead of moving to London Stadium. But EPL teams are world famous now and draw a multinational crowd. English football is no longer the game of the working class, unfortunately.
The night games were class at Highbury especially in the champions league and premier league I loved sky super Sunday games aswell Arsenal vs Manchester Utd back 20 years ago the fans should be closer to the pitch at the Emirates like Highbury very iconic stadium Highbury I loved it ❤
And the best night game (for me) was back in 1970 when we beat Anderlecht (3-0) (agg: 4-3) to lift the Fairs Cup (which became the UEFA Cup then the UEFA Europa League). That was truly a great night.
Arsenal moved away from Highbury way too early. Should have established a period of Domestic & European dominance first and lthen left by about 2012. By 2006 they were champions league finalists, who knows what they could have achieved and who knows the players they could have signed if they stayed a few more years.
Heartbreaking to look back at what we had in Highbury compared to the soulless emirates. We should have redeveloped the ground and expanded what was there. Such a shame looking back miss going there.
A beautiful, iconic stadium and sadly missed. I don't think Arsenal would've had the infrastructure needed to build such a place if they'd stayed in their original home of south London - hence Henry Norris moving the franchise north of the river.
it would had been amazing if the stadium was preserved rather than turned into Apartments. i bet from a business perspective, it would had been better to preserve the stadium and offer tours of the ground and is history alongside the tours offered at the emirates stadium. imagine starting your day with a tour of Highbury and its history and then moving on to the Emirates. i bet it would had been a tourist magnet for anyone who appreciates Football.
