Interesting as a nostalgia trip, but even back in the day, I'd have a GSXR750 over an RG500. I owned two strokes back then, dirt bikes and a GT550 Indy. They needed constant fettling and were fuel pigs. I briefly tried stingers on the Indy, but the racket got old in a hurry, so the stock pipes went back on. Caning it, the GT550 would get as low as 20mpg. You basically lived in fear that the centre cylinder would run hot and burn a piston, or the oiler would pack it in and you'd seize up at speed.
I've got a KTM Duke now. Light, quick, plenty of power, monster brakes, easy on fuel, and so far reliable. No way I'd give that up for a ring-ding-ding. That's before even getting into the really high end stuff like the Paginales or M1000RRs etc

The RG500 was not a common sight back in the day but they were iconic because of their pure bred racing heritage. Knocked off the perch when the Gixxers came onto the scene in the mid '80s.

The first road going RG 500’s were about in the mid 80’s, I know because I owned one. So I am a bit unsure as to which GSXR’s you are referring to that knocked them off their perch back then. I can’t remember any. Please explain?

@@994206 Hmm, let me think now: I'm actually struggling to remember which GSXRs were introduced by Suzuki around the same time as a response to the growing body of legislation effectively killing off larger capacity two stroke road going sports bikes. Seems like my memory's as bad as yours!

Own and have ridden one of these as my 1st Motorcycle ever!! So I learned to “Hone my Chops” ridding skills from this era of Motorcycles!! Still have it, bought in ‘86 and in a garage today to be re built for “Nostalgic Vintage Racing Series” in Japan! (🇺🇸but reside there🇯🇵) These bikes are rare but still there are enthusiasts that restore them here in Japan today so I’m in good hands to make things happen! In my elder years now but have kept my health up to specifically be able to enjoy this & more in the years to come!! Ain’t NOTHING LIKE 2 Stroke Rides & that distinct AROMA!! 🇺🇸🇯🇵👍🏾🤣 🎈🎉🥂🍾✨

I bought a bored and tuned Cagiva Mito for my son 14 years ago when he was learning to ride which had a fantastic chassis. Couldn't believe how nimble and thrilling it was to ride. He'd ride it around in Wales and wherever he stopped the older blokes (like me) would regale him with tales of their youth. Two strokes are magical machines.

I sold my RD350LC (cw Boyesen reeds and Allspeed pipes) for an RG500, and I’ve still got it. Bog standard except for a port job and GSXR1000 front brake master cylinder and braided lines. I’ve had fireblades, R1s etc but never sold the RG. Because once you’ve ridden a big stroker you are hooked for life.

Loved that Chopsy. I passed my test on my sister’s RD200 a few days after my 17th birthday & went straight out and bought a RD350LC. Fitted Allspeed expansions and it sounded beautiful. The power band on that was so narrow - if I remember correctly it was between about 7,000 - 10,000 rpm. So much fun. I’ve never ridden a 500 two stroke, but would love to. Getting a bit pricy though.

Thanks for the great video. I've ridden the Suzuki GT 250, earlier hustler 250 (which we regularly put on the track), the Yammie Rd 400 and later LC350 and on occasion gt750 triple. The brakes on them all were awful and you could induce tank slappers if you did not concentrate. I love the buzz and smell that you only get from a 2 stroke. I still have a blue hustler 250 which still puts a smile on my face even if you go slower than your modern 4 strokes.

    Hi Chops,
What a fantastic trip down memory lane 👍.
I dreamt of having the old rgv250…way back when. Two strokes just evoke a thrill and passion that has a feeling like nothing else on two wheels. Yes, they’re rudimentary in comparison to the motorcycles of today but in their time they were cutting edge.
I was looking forward to seeing this video when you announced that it was in the works and (as usual) you haven’t disappointed.
    10/10 Chops.
    Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

I had a RG125 gamma in the skoal bandit livery at the age of 17 and 18, back in the 90s. very rare bike that used to turn heads. It was tuned and tinkered with and basically gave much bigger bikes a run for their money up to about 90 mph, topping out at 100mph. This video gave me goosebumps and bought back the memories. Great video!

Saved money for a year and bought another; an '77 RD400D w/900mi for $900. Over time, $7k in road race mods, Dymags and stage 4 engine, became an AFM club racer in the 80's.

The Gamma was always epic, only crashed it twice and got my knee down on the beckington roundabouts, always Goodrich hoses for the brakes and get the suspension settings sorted and don’t forget the best tires available were metzelers me 77, however they made you learn how to ride, you MUST keep the 500 above 6000 and work the gears, if you can do that then it’s almost as good as jumping Charlize Therons bones🤡always a smile, best bike day’s ever 🤘🏼Hope you enjoyed it chops 🤡 Thanks for the memories man

Had a Yamaha 350 LC in my late 20s which was bonkers, stupid fast with useless breaks, which taught me to get the speed right before the corner or you were going to have a serious off.

I had a Kawasaki S2 350 back in 1976. It had drum brakes on the front. Now that’s what you call bad brakes! 😮

Taking a 2 stroke from Stratford upon Avon to banbury is a must. I used to take my RG on them roads all the time. But I changed things so I could have bigger wheels so you could get your knee down 🤭🤭

I miss 2 strokes, pure biking, keeping the revs up, blipping the throttle on down shifts, hold the corner speed, the bit of the rev range just before it hits the powerband, the smell. I really miss them.

Had a chance to buy one of these back in the late 1980’s. I was looking for a motorcycle, had test-ridden a VF1000R and a friend put me onto an RG500 that had been brought to the States from Canada when the guy had moved. Had a couple of conversations with the guy but ended up not purchasing because getting title issued on it was going to be a real fur ball. I was about 17 at the time, and had no idea about the significance of these machines. Kinda glad I ended up on a CBR-600F. I think the brakes on this thing would have put me into the trees. Lol

I'd sooner spend £20,000 on this than 90% of modern bikes. I'm a test/ development rider for a living and only a handful of modern bikes have any soul at all. It's also why I have an 88 ZX-10. It was the fastest bike in the world when I was on L plates and I've lusted after one ever since. The only modern bikes that I have tested that left any kind of impression of character were the SV650, Moto Guzzi V7, RE interceptor, RE 350 Meteor, Norton V4SS (bonkers!), Street twin, Herald Brute 500 and the prototype Rocket III. The rest had about as much soul as a half-used bar of soap.
Of course, it's all relative and based on personal preferences or expectations.
My dream bike would be an NR750 if I won the lotto, or my Dad's old CB100 if not! lol

That 2 stroke aroma would transport me back to 1982 when we all had Fizzies and AP 50 and back then you could ride a 250 on L plates so some had RD 250 and Honda Superdream etc, oh those were the days, and going to see Black Sabbath on tour I can almost smell that patchouli oil.😉👍👍👍👍

I owned one 2 stroke (an RS250), it wasn't for me and I didn't love it. However, on the dream bike front I now own an SP2... it's painful, vibey and spares are a nightmare BUT I love it and I'm as bouncing as you in this video when riding it!

Yamaha RD500 even scarcer now ? I remember both this and the RG being compared in bike mags of the day.... it was the RG that was always considered as the closest to a GP bike on the road. I owned one briefly circa 91 and rapidly sold it on for, I think, a 500 pounds profit for appx 2k and it was in very good condition. How I wish I had kept it..... The purchaser was moving to IOM and this was going to be his daily runner over there. I have owned a few triples over the years too, including the mighty H2... another bike I sold before prices went completely nuts ( I made only a thousand pounds in the year I owned it.... ) What a shame 2 strokes were never developed further. There was talk of them eventually being efficient engines, I don't know how you make a 2 stroke efficient !!! A fantastic time though.. Modern bikes are amazing, but I will always have a soft spot for bikes like the RG, RD, KH etc.... just a great period for so many of us.... ride safe folks ! 😉
