Such an amazing book! Traditional is my preferred style too. I like a few modern elements but my heart belongs to old-world, layered elegance. Absolutely love your watercolor prints. Am eager to see your completed guest room. I like the soft sage color. It is very calming and relaxing, perfect for a restful bedroom. Your taste is impeccable. Your videos are always a special treat, thx.

After 40+ years of marriage my wife and I have always collected timeless original artwork and antiques. Being on a limited budget I call it treasure hunting and it becomes part of our daily life. If it’s not quality and you don’t really love it you better take a pass!

Hi Mary, I wanted to say that I very much enjoy watching your channel. Your channel brings me joy, thank you for that! It's an escape to paradise for me. I have been a fan of the Tartan Topiary for months and when I am working on the computer I play your videos in the background and love how you describe history and interior design/gardening. Your videos remind me of my childhood when I went to my relatives homes in the countryside and loved how they decorated. I enjoy listening to the charming jazz/bossa nova music you put into these videos. I also like how you convey DIY projects that can appeal to everyone who want to recreate something beautiful for their own home and garden even if they're on a budget. You make things simple and inspire your viewers. Going to start gardening soon in my backyard and attempt to make that yummy fruit cobbler you showed. All the best. -Kyle

That is the nicest thing to read. I really appreciate you letting me know this. It makes me very happy. You will love the cobbler, just don't forget to use self rising flour instead of all purpose. The crisp buttery edges along with the tart and sweet fruit provide a texture and taste euphoria! Have a great weekend!

    • @thetartantopiary

Schumacher has some really nice books featuring great fabric and wallpaper. “de Gournay: Hand-Painted Interiors” is good too, but the Holy grail of mural books is “Zuber: Two Centuries of Panoramic Wallpaper”. I did a review of this:
      m.ua-cam.com/video/Renf6FORBhY/v-deo.html
I highly recommend it. It’s a history and a design book in one. Amazon offers some slightly used copies at a discount.

I love other friends contemporary decor and have incorporated a few pieces in my home that are heirlooms and statement pieces, but you will definitely think traditional when you leave.

luv, luv your channel. A genius idea to feature books. I have bought two that you have featured! And your voice is so calming and sweet. I agree, modern has its place but I just can't wrap my head around it - to enjoy it. I do like some modern art pieces - but I can only go so far there too. I wonder why our brains are like that, drawing me to certain interiors and styles. And I like many styles from Colonial, Georgian (traditional and classic) - to Rococo and on and on. I especially love old homes and chateaux - for the education of why they built a certain way - and how it was constructed with so little modern technology.
I hope your family knows how special you are - and creative!

This was a very interesting book this week. Very differing styles. I'm with you the classic traditional style is my choice, it seems timeless as in some of the rooms of the book photographed. I loved your decorating choices. I like to choose a classic piece of art then build my room around it and as a seamstress of many years sew all my drapes, bed accessories to go with a chosen duvet cover and re-upholstering a favourite chair or maybe a thrifted piece. When I found these in the package and ready to go, I bought all 4 panels and never looked back. The color, size and quality were perfect. They are made by a company called "India's Heritage Inc." I was able to purchase them through Printer's Alley, which is a great fabric store in Raleigh. They cost a little less than bespoke and they were perfect.

Traditional interiors are never in style because they are never exactly out of style. And vice versa. And that's why I love them. Mary! Did I detect a bit of hostility about we modernists and contemporary design fans?😉 I have your ‘design brain’ in reverse…I can’t stand dark, layered, traditional rooms with lots of tchotchkes BUT I love your channel and have been watching since the first video. Why? I love your voice--it’s like my weekly meditation! It relaxes me immediately. Plus, I always learn something. Enjoy your plaids and damask and thank you!

Funny, and thank you! No hostility here, as I do appreciate the modern and contemporary designs. I just am not drawn to them. I do try to feature all designs, but most of my books lean to the traditional side. You will enjoy the book I have chosen for Sept. 8. “Victoria Hagen’s Live Now”. She enjoys the contemporary aesthetic and, in my humble opinion, is very good at it. Thanks for your comment. I do appreciate it!

Michael’s - they had this particular frame in 2 slightly differing widths. I used the combination together.

I have always adored Traditional decor too, but I often go through fickle times when I can't be faithful to any one particular style. I'm also old enough to be very nostalgic for the MCM styles of my childhood. Most of my 45 year collection of home decor could be considered traditional, country, cottage and even rustic hunting lodge. But in 2011, even before the recent MCM craze, I had the great pleasure of decorating a 2nd home (a mid century built courtyarded townhouse with glass walls inside), which I chose to really take back to 1960. I searched everywhere and collected vintage and reproduction pieces from all over the country. Sadly, before I could finish and so before I could call Atomic Ranch Magazine to come visit, we were relocated and I had to sell the 2nd house. However, I kept many of my prize pieces, and I'm trying to fit them in my present home, which is a challenge to say the least. Sort of, Ralph Lauren meets I Love Lucy, if you can imagine that. :) Great video! Thank you again for another entertaining review, and your room is coming together beautifully!

Wow! I bet you had a lot of fun decorating that home. I will say, I watched North by Northwest again last week and that house at the end always makes me want to take on such a project. I was a little sad to find out the house was just a set in Culver City.

I like what you’re doing with your guest room, the mirror is beautiful, I’m looking forward to see how it turns out.
Soon my husband and I will be taking our camper and heading to Yosemite National Park.
Hopefully I’ll be able to continue watching.Celebrating our 45 anniversary 🎉😊

@@thetartantopiary thank you ,Mary. I’m not really the camping type 🤭
The campaign trip is part of my husband’s bucket list.
But, I’m looking forward to the trip,
It will take 3-4 weeks. If all goes as planned. Should be interesting. I Love traditional home decorating, and yes I love ( brown wood furniture ;) I find myself turning the house into a museum. Between all the hand painted stuff plus everything else that I’m always adding to it. I feel that my eyes can rest when I’m sleeping. 😉
      I’m ignoring the hurricane.
I’ll try to keep in touch on the trip.

Whenever I go to a flea market or garage sale I have a list of things NOT to buy and on top of that list is art, paintings, prints, frames. I have a store room FULL of art and a small room full of empty frames and folder upon folder of drawings and etchings YET just the other day I went to two markets and bought four oil paintings. One is a very 'impasto' painting of Venice in a gold frame (15 euros ) then a semi abstract group in a beautiful Venetian frame (20 euros ) then a painting of a garden building from the 30's in an unusual oak frame (15 euros) then a small painting of a bowl of strawberries in a gorgeous frame (2 euros). Now people will say well at that price why not, but at this stage it borders on addiction. I just cannot walk away from something unusual. On the same day I bought an unusual Singer sewing machine for 20 euros, gorgeous but I already had 6 machines and also a large 19 th century Staffordshire jug in the shape of Neptune sitting on a fish, holding a trident. It had been broken and glued many years ago and is so hideous that I love it. Thank you for another lovely presentation, jsut what I needed. xo

Well, culture is everything that isn't nature, and even sewer is a culture. The rest is just an interpretation of beauty and functionality, consisting of preference in style, available materials and budgets.

I found that last quotation you read to be very judgmental and frankly offensive. Everyone is entitled to their own taste and this comment represents rather bad taste.

    • @thetartantopiary
      @thetartantopiary  9 місяців тому

Hi James- I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone or stifle artistic desires and preferences. All of the quotes were meant to provoke thought and reflection on how deeply design speaks to people. As for representing “bad taste”, a wise man once said, “everyone is entitled to their own taste”. I hope you are doing well and I always appreciate your comments!
