Lars, ElConn, Hazard, and Bren are absolute beasts for putting in the grind, but don’t let their dedication minimize the progress and time you’ve put into this. How come you know all this and still come to his channel then? Isn't it sadder to trail someone that you find sad? The fact that you copy and paste the same comment into multiple reply chains isn't sad? You know you're indirectly supporting him by interacting with his channel right? If you truly didn't want to support him, just ignore everything this guy does, but nah, going to his channel to drop a reply on every comment is probably the best way to do that right?

I mean, the simple fact that it's taken this long and the map isn't done yet is... Insane. It's just too long, too hard. Even the most degenerate gamers just cannot take this long to do 1 thing. I ran a flower farm for 2 & 1/2 years. I put everything aside for it. I had florists I would wholesale to, consistent customers, the works.
No matter how much work I put it, I couldn't catch up with the overwhelming work, and I wasn't earning enough to get help. It felt like if I worked harder, longer, I could get on top of it. It felt like I wasn't good enough. It got so bad that I'd spend hours at the kitchen table, doing everything to hype up myself to get outside, only to work until 2am to try to catch up. But I didn't want to quit. I didn't want to be a failure.
It wasn't until looked really hard into the exact hours I was putting into it and realized I was making about $3 (AUD) an hour, that I knew I had to quit.
I'm so much happier for it. Knowing when to quit, taking that step, especially when you feel like you can do it, is one of the most difficult things.

This is a good showing of why something difficult of the 'Get Over It' genre isn't necessarily going to make for an enjoyable challenge. As much as people want something hard that will punish them back, a huge part of the appeal is that finishing is worth the effort expended. Sure, you'll fall down, and you have to try again and again, but that's mostly okay because you keep learning and improving, optimizing your playstyle as you rush back up to where you were.
But for DD2, you clearly reached the point where you have mastered the lower floors and are rushing through them, and you are still spending thirty minutes to get back to where you were. And even if all the jumps on the way back up were completely fair and reasonable, you are still going to make mistakes and be less than perfect, because you are human and this is a climb where you are meant to screw things up to begin with. That would be totally fine if it weren't for the fact that getting back up takes so much TIME to begin with.
Whether it is Getting Over It, Only Up, Deep Dip or anything else, the reason they enthrall their audiences is because restarting from scratch after a fall or a break is like a sprint up hill. You spend ten or so minutes, and you're back at where you left off, all while feeling the immense satisfaction of having rushed up and feeling your own personal progress. But for DD2? It is calculated jump after calculated jump after jump after jump, and it takes forever. By the time you reach back to the one chance you have at the really difficult jump that has got you stymied, not only have you forgotten exactly what you tried last time, but you are already exhausted and demotivated by the thought of having to climb back up purely because of the time investment necessary to do so. 90% of the climb back up is a 30 minute timesink grind that punishes a momentary lapse of attention span, and that simply isn't fun.
The original Deep Dip unintentionally got the difficulty curve just right for the no-checkpoint genre. Maybe it was slightly too easy, but Deep Dip 2 went way overboard. I'm glad I'm not playing it.

Your message here is not only absolutely respectable, I'll even go so far as to say you're being a great role model for how to handle taking on too much.
I've been wondering for a while now how anyone can continue for so long everyday with diminishing and diminishing returns.
You absolutely deserve your health - mental, physical, social, so it is obvious to me that you've made the right call. A really tough call for sure, but _the right call._ Moreover, you've spoken very well to openly communicate where you're coming from and where you want to go, acknowledging and not apologizing that this is an incompatible path that you'll now change. Reading through these comments, it's clear I'm far from alone in supporting you in this course correction. You've done a great job and I'm proud of your fortitude and stamina, the dedication you've brought to this challenge. You've given it a hell of a lot! And I'm proud of you now for recognizing risk and harm in your life, and deciding and taking action to opt out of continuing it.

I agree, this is a fantastic thing to do for someone who is such a role model for so many young people. I see too many UA-camrs who push the “grind at all costs” mindset and it’s not good for humans as a whole. We need less of that and more of caring about others and yourself.

So reading your comment made me realize how good it is to see people openly talk about learning ones one limits and actively deciding to step away from a challenge, even a self imposed one and not calling it a defeat but celebrating how far you got and that you listened to what you feel is the correct choice.

It had easier modes with checkpoints and then people started to realize they had gotten so good at it that they didn't need the checkpoints at the easier modes so they tried a no-checkpoint run. The game wouldn't be fun at all if there were no checkpoints to begin with and people had to make a flawless run for 40 minutes just to see if they could progress one step further.

I think a lot of people can agree that DD2 was just a little TOO ambitious on its scope. Sure a bigger tower sounded better with more floors but when each floor has tricks and mechanics that just end runs so easily not to mention that some of these CRAZY tricks are on the upper most floors. I think the floor ordering could of been a bit better with some of these zany tricks being a big lower in the tower. And as others have mentioned, theres a bit more much judicial use of plastic.
Edit: As someone pointed out, Punishing falls is probably the biggest issue. Due to the sprial, a fall would be multiple floors and with all of the plastic littered around the track, unless you landed on your wheels, your just going to bounce off everything to the bottom. Plus due to some of the bugs with the game like the landing bug, a fall can be completely out of your control and asking a hour of perfect play with zero bugs is asking for trouble.

    • @sailingintosunshine
      @sailingintosunshine 3 місяці тому +63

if you compare it to the original getting over it, the big difference is how unforgiving falls are. It feels like half of the falls are dead turtles or go to the lower floors.
My main suggestion would be to be more forgiving for falls, some of the pools could be bigger, some more scenery could make long falls more unlikely, more recovery roads etc.
It’s a whole different ballgame, if resets are the exception, when you make a mistake, instead of the usual outcome.

Yeah, getting over it has like 5 solid "checkpoints" through the game. If you make it to the radio tower after 10 hours of playing and failing, one missed jump takes you back.... to the start of the radio tower. That's why Orange Hell is named that. It is one of the few places where you can easily lose an hour's worth of progress.

While I agree with everything you said, I do want to try and stand up for the mappers a bit - its so hard to know how difficult something of this scale is going to end up being. And of course they wanted to err on the side of being too hard rather than too easy - I think people would have been even more disappointed if the map got beaten in less than ~80 hours after all the hype. Its just that with a tower map like this, 1 jump that is more inconsistent than the mappers think it is on an early floor can literally 2x the time to beat the full map. The exponential nature of the maps difficulty makes it very hard to tame. With so many mappers and so many moving parts to get the event put together, I can easily see how the difficulty got out of their control, since it wasn't possible to do full playtests of the entire experience. Of course, in hindsight, the map is too hard - but even with what we know now, how would we change the map to get the difficulty the community would have wanted? Every change you make to bring the difficulty down has the risk of going too far, making the map far too easy. I think its perfectly valid to point out why the map is too hard, I just want to make sure people aren't blaming the mappers for this stuff, they had an impossible task and just got unlucky IMO.
That being said... I think the major thing I'll fault them for is the idea to build the map in a spiral. Its a cool concept, I can see why after they thought of it they probably grew attached to it. Its simple and brutal in its design. But its way too brutal. I actually think that if Deep Dip 1 was built in the same way, it would have been around 4x harder. I can defend the individual jumps and map length and chalk it up to the mappers just having an impossible task when it came to gauging difficulty - but I think it should have been obvious that the spiral shape was just going to be insanely brutal. Even if the spiral shape didn't draw out the time its taking to beat the map - I don't think its FUN at its core to have these huge falls this often. Other Foddian games understand this, with the 100% fall moments being much less frequent.
I already know the mappers are getting a lot of hate for the difficulty, I just hope people don't pile on too much (not saying you are doing that in any way, your comment is respectful and useful - just putting down my two cents)

But without 30k on the line, DeepDip 2 would have become what it should've been based on the map alone: A stupidly hard map that would take months to finish for the most dedicated players. But with all the hype, and the build up, and the money, and the excitement, there was (and is) such a huge pressure to make progress and finish the map as fast as possible that it's really unhealthy for the players and boring for the viewers.

    • @Cacti54321
      @Cacti54321 3 місяці тому +1

@@orionweiss5418 Yeah. On one hand I can see how this can easily happen, since each mapper is realistically only looking at their 1/16 of the tower and so I'm sure they all had good intentions too when building it, but with a mindset of making it more difficult than deep dip 1. I think the issue mainly comes in how much different it feels when doing your floor in isolation (That you have probably run countless times testing tricks and other things) compared to players who get few attempts with most of these attempts being when are pressured mentally either from exhaustion or pressure of falling. A lot of these tricks that seem too hard I think are honestly really cool looking when done right, and I'm guessing that's the mappers intent of making a cool difficult trick, but its pretty much impossibly for anyone on their team without actually grinding deep dip 2 to fully understand the mental challenges involved. And this is without including things like plastic or recoveries, which I think can be improved with hindsight... I'm sure they might even agree with some of the suggestions (although with how hostile a lot of people have been about it its also likely they get defensive)
My main point is just that I don't really think its possible for them to of had a good sanity control unless they actually had a few players have early access to grind and grind the map over and over to get these results.

    • @orionweiss5418

@@Cacti54321 Mmm, I think there is a lot that can be done honestly. Perspective is important. They should have known going in that this was going to be the largest TM event of the year, for the entire community. Having it burn out even the best players and end with an air of negativity is a bad thing for the entire community. You can low ball clear time by letting people clear individual levels, and then adding in the full time to get back for every failure. That alone should have shown that floors 15 and 16 are dogshit design. You just don't put those at the end of a 30+ minute run, it's abusive. And that's the problem. The passion for the project is clear, but it is equally clear no one was acting as the brakes. All those finicky plastic jumps, excessive length for no reason, and tricks that are not consistent enough super late in the run are things that should have been easy to catch and would have massively helped the level. Hopefully the massive good the level does for the community isn't offset too badly by the lack of oversight, and they can continue with the new tradition tempered by restraint for what should be done rather than what can

A squared function was a pretty good fit until you hit the 1248 m PB, at which you were stuck for like 35 hours. A squared function predicts it takes around 400 hours for you to finish, while a cubed function, which fits slightly better predicts around 500 hours. Because of this I'd say you are at best around half way done in climbing deep dip 2, if you look at hours invested.

The squared function of time as a function of height is time = 0.0001024*height^2-0.0323*height. The cubed function is time = 4.864E-8*height^3+2.162E-6*height^2+0.01489*height. The squared function has an R^2 of 0.9897, and the cubed is 0.9924.

Never even thought it could be a clickbait.
I mean, when we see how things have evolved : less and less players on the tower, Bren's losing his mind tring to complete it, Hazard raged quit yesterday, eLconn tired too... I don't know if someone will finish it tbh, it has been a month and the hype is way over, players' not having fun anymore. its only fun for the certain kinds of players. dd2 was never supposed to be for everyone; if it was, it would have checkpoints. i think more than it being a lesson in game design, its a lesson for the players. just because something is popular, or because something is hyped, doesn't mean that you are going to have fun with it. some games (or in this case, maps) are made for a specific type of player, and that type of player isn't always your every day joe.
from reading a lot of these comments i think a lot of people need to learn that when it comes to extremely difficult challenges, there are going to be a lot of people who can't/wont do it; but that's alright. its not the players fault for not wanting to continue, but its also not the maps fault.

@@MrFaceOfThePlanet yes but's its possible to make something hard without sucking the joy out of playing it. The problem most people are pointing out is that when you fail on this map as opposed to dip deep, the falls are way more punishing. On Deep Dip one until you got to the snake, falls maybe took you down a floor or two. On Deep Dip 2 many falls take you all the way to the bottom which is why the map is taking 4 times longer to beat. Being unable to play tricky parts over and over without having to spend 40 minutes getting there everytime is draining and tedious for both players and viewers. I love Wirtual's content but watching him play floors 8-10 like a million times with 40 minute re-climbs after every fall was mind numbing after awhile, as it apparently was for him as well.

Giving up is honestly a skill that we should all posess. It's so easy to say "no just never give up, always keep going, the only thing holding you back is yourself, never surrender". It sounds inspirational, we want it to be true. But at a certain point the question you need to ask yourself is at what is the cost of all of this, am I getting out of it what I wanted, am I going to succeed or am I just putting myself in a spot where I am miserable over and over because I am too stubborn to course correct? I know I've pushed myself into very bad situations before with the "never surrender" attitude. I wish I would have been better at giving up when I was younger. Knowing when to push on and when it's wise to pivot is crucial to having a happy life.

I have said this before, peak deep dip was in the first 2 weeks, and it's been kinda sad to see how more and more players have dropped out. The creators overshot the mark with how difficult they made this one, which I don't blame them for as it's hard to judge. If they decide to do a deep dip 3, they will need to put the difficult somewhere between 1 & 2.
I think the real issue here is that spiral design of the map, falls are extremely punishing, and a fuck up in the wrong place can send you hurtling 4 floors, if not all the way to the bottom. Inconsistent tricks (typically plastic ones) need to have friendly recovery routes. The difficulty of the tricks required is fine, but it's the ever-growing punishment for failing them that makes the map so gruelling. Without how difficult some tricks on the map are, it would still be too difficult for all but the most elite players even if the map was forgiving with its falls.
Mentally, a fall that sets you back 5 minutes is far less arduous than a fall that sets you back 40 minutes. You still need to drive really consistently even with 5 minutes per fall, but at least it won't break the players. TBH an ideal deep dip probably takes Bren around 120 hours to complete.

@@midastheunwise2423 TBH I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with the map as released in its design goal. I've said it on another video, but I think there is way more empty space on this deep dip. You lose so much more progress on average when you fall, of course it's going to be incredibly demotivating. Getting Over It and other rage games you might lose an hour of progress but then it might take you only half of that to climb back up, then half again the next time. If every other fall put you at the bonfire in Jump King it would be an atrocious grind.

I realized it when you were at floor 6 or 7. This map does not scale (no pun intended) properly. Of course they wanted to make it bigger than DD1, because more is more better, right? Well, I'm gonna be perfectly honest, and it's not because I want to be mean. I think the mappers kinda blew it.
They didn't want to make DD2 as difficult as they did, but most people have huge problems conceptualizing power laws (compounding interest, logarithmic growth, that kind of thing). That's why the mappers didn't see it intuitively. They obviously also didn't do the math, which would have led them to the same conclusion, and they didn't extensively test the map as a whole, which again would have led them to the same conclusion. So they ended up with a hella imba map.
I don't want to rag on them, because we're all human and we all make mistakes, but I hope and believe that they're learning from this, and maybe get knocked down a notch, and that DD3 will be a more holistic design, and more balanced.

It takes lots of courage & bravery to keep going. And it takes exactly the same amount, if not more, to know when to back down & quit, willingly letting go of the glory. Don't be too hard on yourself. You don't need to be a winner, or to prove yourself to no one. The only thing that matters is that you do something with a smile on your face, and because you're happy doing it. Kudos. ;)

Hey, I broke a rib at the beginning of May and I was very thankful being able to follow you live making progress and having some distractions from the constant pain.
I was wondering what happened to your approach, thanks for the update, very understandable.
I wanted to see you succeed, and I still think at some point I’m going to see a video where you do but if not that’s fine, it was fun and you’re going to do other fun things.
    Definitely not disappointed ;)

The question you raised "Am I quitting because it is logical or because I lack the winner mentalitiy?" is one that resonates so much with me. Rock climbing is my Trackmania, doing an 8a/8b is my Deep Dip equivalent.
You know what the worst thing is? For me, I figured out that the answer is not one or the other, but both. There are so many valid reasons to quit, take it slow, do it later, whatever, and there is nothing wrong with that. Especially if it's about health, obligations and responsibility towards others. Still, quitting hurts, because you know that if you truly - singlemindedly - wanted to continue, you could. You could probably make it work somehow. There might be consequences though. And so you decide to let it slip.
And there's no one who can blame you for that. Life is a balance, and you took your stance. At a later point, you might decide differently, and that's fine as well.
For now I will continue fighting because I know I can. I would like to offer all my encouragement for you to keep going as well - not necessarily with Deep Dip, but with whatever challenges life has coming for you next.

Only the foolish don't know when it's time to cut their losses and live another day. When the cost of the journey begins to outweigh the potential reward, it is always good to contemplate reevaluating the journey.

I’m also a climber. I’d say the analogy works better when talking about sending a specific route/climb, than doing any climb of a specific level. It fucking sucks to feel close to a climb but day after day not make progress, and I’d argue it’s usually better to try other things and come back when you’re feeling better physically and/or mentally, which is what wirtual is doing.

Well said! As a fellow climber I can relate a lot as any slacking off might cause you to lose strength while too much training might get you injured. There is no perfect optimum, there is always a tradeoff.

this is the same feeling some Geometry Dash pro players have, the feeling of getting far but loosing and having to continue the grind again is really frustrating sometimes, and most of the times you stop enjoying playing that level/map because of how long it is taking you. i completelly understand u as a GD player and its completelly fine to take a break, you are a true warrior, cuz doing the same thing thousands of attempts is really difficult. i also have that feeling of thinking that im wasting my time, because focusing in one single map takes your time to do other fun things, and sometimes you feel like its not worth it, but believe me it is, at the end it is, but its not bad to take a break. Take care Wirt :)

We all appreciate all the content you’ve brought us on Deep Dip 2, the videos and streams have been a lot of fun to watch. Doing what’s best for you is ultimately what’s most important, and we’re all excited to see new content too and if/when you do revisit Deep Dip 2 it’ll be great to see you hopefully refreshed and motivated again. Looking forward to the new vids and content!

Yeah, so DD2 got wayyyy too hard for its own good. DD1 took one week to finish, we're over a month after the start of DD2 and it's still not done. DD1 was an impossible achievement for most players and now we can see that DD2 is the same but for one of the top players.

I player deep dip for 2 hours and it felt like brain rot. Its crazy for me that you have played for 200 hours and just now it feels like brain rot. I loved watching you and still love watching you when you try again. You can for sure do this and I will watch when you do. Good luck wirtual and have an amazing time doing this😁

Honestly this map has been a testament to the absolute best of the best in TM in the sense that even achieving floor 3 is unobtainable to 99% of the community. So to even achieve floor 14, that if you're not attempting to blaze the trail with guys like Hazardu and Bren, all you are doing is destroying your mental for really nothing more than internet clout.
Massive respect wirtual for what youve achieved already, and even more so for knowing when you need to tap out on an event like this

100% supportive of your choice, I also think that I'd prefer you talking and creating content you enjoy and share your good vibes.
There is a line between a challenge and a goal, maybe you should view for the next events like this as a challenge over the time you allow it to be a part of your life, and feel proud for progress and effort you made toward this.
You always gain something through a challenge, achieved or not, be yourself and be well!

You said it might be 100 or 200 more hours... and it might not be enough. You are right in one respect. That won't be enough. What's going on with those top floors is a near exponential disaster. Frankly Wirtual, it was an epic gaming moment but the failure was the map being too hard. It's just plain too brutal. The rest of us watching, even if you slogged it through for 200-300-400-500 more hours are going to be as bored of it as you long before it's over. It's ok. Let it go. Let's cheer for whoever is insane enough to finish it. But this really is a map that only maybe two people in the world can actually have a shot at finishing without having practice floors. This isn't an excuse for you. You did beyond good.

The burnout is real. Glad you had the realization before it got worse.
Was awesome to see u explore random maps in the fast 5 event, and actually enjoying it so much.
Looking forward to you being fresh so you can then finish the map. Have fun.
And having been there, you could absolutely tank it, but you'd also ABSOLUTELY HATE IT. When you burn out you burn out.
