The lyrics are pure poetry. Classic. What a legend
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson may disagree with the lyric "Always a Woman". She can't even define a woman which means she has come to believe truth is fluid.
Ketanji, I don't need to be a vet to define a dog.
Indeed 💯 My daughter was texting me parts of his songs and at first I didn't understand but I texted back it's still rock and roll to me... and then go ahead with your own life leave me alone, lol. Her fiance and their little family was out for their Sunday drive and she said she knew every song because of me ❤... now they're asleep I'm sure and I'm still listening, lol. Who needs Christy Brinkley... was that too much 😬
Don't tell my Mom but this is her song. She makes me crazy but I love her anyway. She takes care of herself but all of us too. We're tangled in a web of love and torture for each other. A strong woman she is and a strong woman she's made me. No matter what we go through, I'll stay with her all the way.
It's so beautiful that everyone has a different favorite line from this song, depending on the woman in their life
Mine is "She'll take what you give her as long as it's free." My mom's quite frugal. 🤣
You know Cassidy its interesting some women find this song sexist!
@divorcedme I know its not sexist but to some girls nowadays every little thing is sexist.
Unless you have multiple personalities like myself and a lot of others...lol this is a BPD anthem....😁
I walked down to the aisle to my husband to this song. Cause I knew I was imperfect. But he loved me anyway. He's gone now . This will forever be our song.
I am so very sorry for your loss. He is waiting for you up in heaven and will greet you when you transition. These bodies are only temporary just like this world. It’s just an experience till we go to heaven and live forever. I am very sorry for your pain. Our souls live forever nothing here is forever but heaven is forever. God bless
You will be with him again....take it from someone who has Clairaudience...they're there..Allllll of our loved ones. Don't EVER doubt it. I hope that makes you smile because it's the truth. God Bless You!
Lyrics
She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child but she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief, but she's always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out and she never gives in
She just changes her mind
And she'll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding
But she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me
Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm
Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out and she never gives in
She just changes her mind
She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
But she can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me
Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm
Mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Many don’t know but this song was playing during the 9/11 attacks in the WTC plaza. RIP to everyone that losses their lives that day. Never Forget 💜🇺🇸
One of the greatest songs ever written, relevant to any man in love.
Honestly even I can use this song if I change woman to gentleman (or just stick with woman, ill take either lol)
Anyone here not over the age of 30?
22 here, coping over finding out a woman I held an unrequited love for 12 years turned out to aromantic. It hurts. ☹️
This song almost always makes me cry because of some scary footage of 9/11 I watched long ago. A cameraman and his buddy walked right up to the World Trade Center plaza directly underneath the two towers as debris was raining down and people were falling to their deaths. And while all this was going on an instrumental version of this song was playing on the plaza speakers.
No they are talking about the Jack Tailercio footage. @@David-fe4ne
Made me think of the musicians on the Titanic. It’s like the music is playing going down with the buildings
@@jesusgonzalez-acton8045 Jack Tailercio never went near the North Tower, nor did he catch anyone actually impacting the ground. The closest to that was catching a man falling, but thats it. If there was more footage from him, which there likely isnt, it would by held by NIST, who has already released all of his footage.
@@tigerwareagle1485 If titanic had nearer my God to thee, the WTC's Twin Towers have; she's always a woman :(

What a beautifully written song.
We will never experience music of this caliber in these modern times. Sad, nostalgic, but thank God we still have these precious treasures to enjoy for the remainder of our lives ❤
An instrumental version of this was playing in the WTC plaza when the towers were burning on 9/11. Very sad and haunting...
I saw that video, this was playing while the cameraman was filming the plaza covered in debris, what I think of every time I hear this song:(
"She's frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel"
@@georgesmitherson4721 it sounds like me lol. I'm glad I'm not alone 😳
It's interesting how this song is a historical song during 9/11. During the crash of the Twin Towers before collapsing this songs instrumental playing for 5 world trade center in the plaza.
Has anyone ever realized that this song is a perfect description of the universe and how it's possible to see the universe through a person
Great insight. The astronomer Owen Gingerich (no relation to the Newt, thankfully) calls it our "dappled" universe.
My daughter graduated from High School in a Covid ceremony last night and she is the most beautiful girl woman I have ever loved. This song reminds me of her. She was born strong, wild and free and loud as **** Shes thunder and lighting and I love her to the moon
covid ceremony sounds like some star trek shit, live long and prosper.
It’s always been my Mom’s song… I thought it was just me but my sister says the same. She passed away 3/23/23. Rest in eternal peace, Mom! We ❤ you! RIP “Di”
Many people may not know this, but an instrumental of this song was playing in the plaza of the WTC on 9/11. RIP to everyone 20 years later.
Hearing a body slam into the ground about 6 seconds after the person started filming inside the plaza with the music is sickening. That footage has stuck with me for a while

Who knew back in 1970's.... This song played ironically on 9/11/2001 on the WTC Plaza 20-30 minutes before the collapse of the Twin Towers... Alongside with the How Deep is your Love.... Although the songs were playing on instrumental version the power of these lyrics is remarkable... Even when you don't actually hear them, your brain is singing them... And most ironically.... The lyrics of this song along with the lyrics of ''How Deep is your Love'' seems like a prophecy or a poem dedicated to the peace (which was lost on 9/11), and for all those innocent emotions and good intentions that people had in the past.... Many people has described these lyrics as the farewell of the Twin Towers to a world that was about to change... They had right... Nothing is the same today... We changed, the world changed... If we keep behaving this way to other people, to the animals, to the enviroment we will end up destroying ourselves... The change is on our hands... We love these decades and we have to build a world (at least) better than what we see on videos today....
If the towers were still standing today I would have loved to visit them, they were such beautiful buildings. It is sad how they took a decade to build and only minutes to destroy them.
@@flimain6002 I think all of us would love to have a flashback in the 90’s… If only we had the opportunity to go there for an afternoon and spend an evening at the WTC Plaza or the old Twin Towers Observatory & Windows on the World for a drink…. Its so sad these gorgeous Towers are missing from the NY Skyline…
Damn, that could imply that "She Always a Woman" and "How deep is your love" were one of the last songs people heard before death and chaos.
These sounds are like the last song played by the Titanic musicians before the final plunge.
After having your heart broken. After finding love and putting it first for years. After the ups and downs. The pain the pleasure, the worry, the rejoice. After all of that. This song will really, really resonate...
20 Years Ago on September 11th 2001, this song's instrumentals was playing from the 5 World Trade Center audible in the WTC plaza as chaos was going on and both towers were burning. Beautiful song overall and never forget 9/11. 🙏
And "How Deep Is Your Love" was also playing, while a man was falling to his death from the Tower 😢 it feels so spooky listening to both of those song that played during the chaos 💔
An instrumental version of this played on a playlist used to entertain visitors of the original WTC complex and played during 9/11 as the attacks unfolded, people jumping and the eventual collapse. This song played till the towers fell like a farewell siren to all those they faithfully served till the bitter end. This is why this song has such a profound meaning to me.
I saw the video of it from 9/11 and thought the music sounded familiar. So I tried to find out the name of the song and here I am.
That's right! It's so unbelievable that people died while this song was playing, I always feel a certain way when I listen to this 😢💔
I'm part of the WTCMC (World Trade Center Muzak Community) and we have found most of the songs that would have played on the Austin J. Tobin Plaza that day.
This song helped me when my daughter was a teenager, I tried to look past the angst and assertive defiance to see the strong woman she was becoming & I wanted her to be.
'Oh, She never gives in.... & she never gives out she just changes her mind'
I remember 😢 crying when I first heard it, beautiful melody, it just resonated and an encouragement to love.
I never thought of this song that way. I thought it was about a past/present/future flame of the song's character.
The instrumental of this song was playing in the concourse of the World Trade Center just after the first plane hit. It was quite eerie, the world was about to change but the Muzac kept playing as if it was any other day. RIP Betty, you're always a women to me.
As a die-hard Beatles fan, with a degree in classic guitar, in my opinion this is the greatest song ever. Three minutes of armonic and melodic perfection.
Without Paul McCartney this song doesn't exist. Notice any similarities in style?

my first concert ever was billy joel, i went with my parents when I was 10. this song always reminds me of my mom. life has not been kind to her and she has had to become a very tough person to get through it, i feel like she has not left survival mode since she was a child. but she’s always the most beautiful woman to me :) and this song captures that perfectly
My Dad has always played this so beautifully on the piano. This is the first time I’ve actually heard the original. ❤️
Im 16 and Im a Billy Joel listener for years now. He is just so perfect and touches my feelings, emotions at the second I hear a song of his, especially Vienna and this one and he is so timeless. It makes you think about people, yourself, life, love and that is something that defines a big artist to me. I wish there was a second Billy Joel at my time.
I’m the same age and feel exactly the same way. I love Vienna and really wish there was a billy joel for us. At least we have this one and honestly nothing can beat him :)
@Akın Güneroğlu
and @Alisha Rashid There _is_ a Billy Joel for us, and it's this one. He's still around and always will be around, whenever we need him to be :)
I thought I was the only one, I’m 23 now but I discovered Billy Joel at 15 years old and I couldn’t explain then why I am so touched by his music but as my life has developed I know completely understand his artistic value. I saw him in concert at age 18, I was probably the only Mexican boy by himself there at least it felt that way to me. I will always remember his concert.
Hi dear everyone has different opinion on this song there's sometimes a deep story or a misunderstood friendship behind it all some people mix up love and friendship
What I love about this song is how calm and peaceful the melody is while it’s lyrics are actually really angry
Really? I don't hear the lyrics as angry at all. I think you're misinterpreting. I hear understanding admiration. I hear recognition of her humanity. He sees her power and her flaws. He's saying she possesses these wonderful and tragic qualities all at once. He respects her for them and loves her despite them.
theres no correct interpretation i think. one of the comments accurately pinpointed that the interpretation an change depending on the woman in the listener's life. I hear fluidity of a person since this is what i have experienced. sometimes i am kind but i dont consider myself a kind person because i am also selfish at times. the lyrics are reallya piece of art to bring out so much diverse interpretation.
@@masterchiefer25 i think you pretty much summed it up. No anger, just a little bit of regret.
Seriously, I cannot express how much I love this album. Some of the best piano melodies of all time, as well as some of the most memorable, catchy, and meaningful lyrics. This track in particular is my absolute favorite from this record, and possibly even my all time favorite Joel song. I saw a comment here that said it's "Three minutes of harmonic and melodic perfection." I could not have said it any better myself. It does not matter whether you're 9, or 90. Great music is great music.
Whazzzup all you Orville fans?! I came here from a comment on Egotastic Funtime and I'm delighted to see so many comments from Orville/Joel fans. Amazing how much more unites us than separates us.
I was 19 years old and i was watching a tv show the Orville suddenly this song came after listening to it. I stopped it and Googled the lyrics and found this song. This was the my first time listening to a Billy joel song and i fell in love with it.
I am from India so never listened to his songs but this one will always be my favourite.
Damn. I'm so glad there are others in India who watch the Orville...what a great series! And such great selection in music too.
He sent me this song today. Thanks to you. You always make my day special😊😊
I was driving back from band rehearsal yesterday and was listening to this on the radio. It sure does get to you. Been humming and singing it since. A truly wonderful masterpiece.
This has to be one of the best written songs. I grew up not being allowed to listen to anything much outside of religious songs. I remember when I heard my first JOEL song, this was it, needless to say at 19 years of age I was on a quest to listen to "them all" before I died...lol I am still alive and loving every single note! from 1979 -present God Bless you JOEL , always.

That made me smile. I'm only 22, but in early highschool, I had a friend (who I wound up in a short relationship with) who was raised unbelievably religiously and her parents were so incredibly protective and at 14, all she was allowed to watch were Christian films and Veggie Tales. So we'd have movie nights and watch Harry Potter together and Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, or other movies deemed too "evil" by her parents. Movies were a whole new world to her. God, that was nearly a decade ago. Miss you Alyssa. hope all is well for you out there. You're always a friend to me.
Dang. I'm sorry you didn't get to enjoy it until 19 but glad you're making for it with lots of listening to much beautiful music!
This song always fills me with gratitude for that first girlfriend who taught me the red flags and disabused me of naïve idealism and mistaken beliefs about what constitutes "love." Thanks, hunnybuns!
To Billy Joel: she's all yours, my friend. Enjoy. :-)
Yes I’m 28 and this is my song it resonates so much . I couldn’t stop crying

I remember hearing this song in the World Trade Center, it was such a beautiful day...
"She's ahead of her time" - love that line. Great song, as usual from Billy Joel.
I saw him in St. Louis in 2000....he played for over 2 hours & was the most gracious, generous, & appreciative performer I've ever seen!
Such a _beautiful_ melody. And lyrics: "She'll promise you more than the garden of Eden, then carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleedin'." Clever is too weak a word to describe that kind of writing. I am 78 years old, the first time I heard this song was about six months ago.
He explains Every Aspect of a Woman in 3 Minutes and 23 seconds. Absolute Masterpiece.
He stares at the mask with so much emotion. He sees what others failed to see.

“She’ll take what you give her as long as it’s free”. Never been truer words spoken
"She's ahead of her time" - love that line. Great song, as usual from Billy Joel.
I think the line is made better if you take the previous one into account; "She can wait if she wants." It's like being ahead of her time gives her the liberty to wait for everybody else to catch up. :)

Billy Joel ... the one singer whose songs' words I can fully make out without googling for them, whose lyrics are in complete sentences and grammatically correct English, and whose songs have tunes that can be hummed or whistled.
Beatle-esque. Classic. Timeless. When I was a small kid I thought it was the beatles and Paul singing
I've also seen Billy quoted as saying this song came about because he "wanted to write a song that [he] thought a guy like Gordon Lightfoot would sing."

Bravo et merci monsieur Joel !
This song is saying that he loves her no matter her faults. She's a thief and a child, she will cut u and laugh but she's always a woman. No matter what happens he will always love her. This shows more passion than if he just outright said he loved her.
As many very recent people, Orville got me here. What I'm surprised about is my mom played Billy Joel all the time while I was young, I've listened to Billy Joel later as an adult, but for the life of me don't remember this song! Just an idiot but glad to have found now.
Pop culture is a spider's web. Two works can be so close to each other without touching, but what really gets people listening/watching/reading them is the connections between what we've seen, and what we have still to discover.

this song is a perfect example of how someone can create something so beautiful when they are inlove
My love for Billy Joel goes back as far as I can remember.....this is my so g for my mom. She was a beautiful, strange woman full of contradictions as well. Luckily, she blessed myself and my sister with her beauty and neurosis before she left this world. My dad loves this song. My parents have been divorced for over 35 years, and I've never seen a man pretend to hate a woman he loves as much as he still loves my mom.
And I thought I was the only one! yes the orville! Reminded me what a craftsman Billy Joel is as a story teller and a very original episode that I don't think you will find on any other syfy starship series. Very touching and they should definitely bring the character back. The story is not really over!

Billy Joel, welcome to The Orville. The visual cues, that went with the music to this song, were great. I especially like how Ed and Kelly approached their command chairs and sat down at the same time, in perfect timing with the music.
Yup I came from watching Orville too. Such a thoughtful ending that left me both happy and sad at the same time. Such a great show and such a good song.

Uno dei più grandi musicisti della sua generazione, un genio sfortunato dal punto di vista personale. Non sempre i grandi artisti sono fortunati con l'amore eppure continuano a cantarlo. Chapeau mr. Billy Joel. ❤
Lots of comments on the relationship this song is depicting. But it's about his ex-wife Elizabeth Weber who literally saved him from some financial ruin. It isn't about a toxic relationship - whether they had one or not - it's about Joel's reaction to the things said about his wife by those trying to take the mic (and his money).
You deserve many more likes. This is casting light on the truth.
I suppose without knowing this, everyone rushes headstrong straight into making the same false assumption on behalf of women like the people you're talking about made about his wife.
Bit of a clown move to do that. You deserve more likes. ❤️
Sorry, but I did not understand exactly how Elizabeth Weber literally saved Billy Joel from financial ruin? My guess was that after his divorce to his first wife, he prospered with his next marriage to Christie Brinkley. Obviously, I didn't understand the full context of your statement, so it made me curious.
This would be the Elizabeth Weber whom he divorced citing emotional abuse after his suicide attempts and that tried to steal his money? That Elizabeth Weber? The one described by those who knew her as a malignant narcissist?
Not going to reply to anyone specifically - This comment is just reiterating what Billy Joel himself has said the song is about. It is not my interpretation of this song. Go do your own research.
My dad used to play this song during his drunken tangents after my parents divorced. He never failed to remind me that this song reminded him of her.

@@jaredmello no, it's about his wife of the time who essentially saved his career and financial future.
My Mom passed, when I hear this song, I remember dancing with her in the kitchen. Seating back and forth. Smiling and just when I think shes done, she grabs me in and holds me closer. I can see the shine in her brown mossy eyes. A hint is left of the young girl she was, someone full of life and promise. I see her in the lines of this song, she was so complicated and yet never was there a mother who loved her children more.
This is the song that was still playing in the Plaza when the South Tower collapsed at the WTC on 9/11
this is such a perfect song...
One of the finest ballads ever composed and written.
Chapeau, Mr. Joel!
We will spend together me and you enjoying the sound of billy joel.
Vossa alteza gastaria de dança essa valsa comigo Your highness would spend that waltz dancing with me
Such a beautiful melody..
I'm 36 years old and my dad had introduced me to this song when I was alot younger and I felt in love with Billy's melodies since that day 🤩
This song played at the World Trade Center Plaza during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The eerie silence, the lack of anyone there, the echoes of sirens and the music, the rubble about, clothing on the floor, and the crumbling giants looming overhead, a reminder that in just an hour or so, the plaza floor would be the landing zone for many desperate souls, and then the towers themselves. RIP how fucking disturbing
The fact that Billy Joel wrote this … tells me .. he has truly seen something that is rarely seen …women for who they truly are .. it makes me feel seen and appreciated and beautiful.. ❤️
Absolutely beautiful, amazing and most importantly true. Every line has meaning. True art. True classic.
Thanks for the love and the constant support ❤️ I'd love to know where you are commenting from
This is my favorite Billy Joel song!!!
I’ve been very overwhelmed with school and the future and I’ve been feeling so stressed and tired. I finally told my dad about it and he took me to get food and listened to my fears and doubts. He was so understanding. I thought he would be mad and tell me to suck it up. We finished our food and we got in the car to go home. He put on this song and I started crying. He just looked at me with understanding and pet my hair( he hasn’t done that since I was a little girl). I’m crying writing this but now I feel like maybe everything is gonna be okay.
I went through practically the same thing! If you are still struggling, Billy Joel's "Vienna" is what got me through it. Take care of yourself, hun!
I’m in a somewhat similar situation, I ain’t really been myself for over a year now (I won’t go into details) but this song and ‘Hurt’ by Nine Inch Nails always just help me to vent. Anyway, know you ain’t alone and keep your head up, Queen 👑.
Nice story. Good luck!
Everything will be ok. Life is so scary and stressing, but you'll always get through the scary and hard times. Thinking of you, just remember when your young things sometimes feel like they're never gonna get easier, but they do, and someday it will all be a distant memory and you'll be in a happy place in your life.... love Tracy from Ireland 💞💞💞
it IS going to be ok. The future can be scary but you have so many good things waiting for you.
