Hi Jennifer! In Russia, we call it a New Year's Tree and invite Santa Claus and his granddaughter (Snow Maiden) to give gifts to children on New Year's Eve. Then the parents of the children get Santa drunk to such an extent that he cannot stand on his feet, after which they load Santa Claus into his car and the Snow Maiden takes him home to sleep....This is all very funny!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🎅🎅🎅🎅 God bless you, Jennifer, now and forever!!!!!🍸🍸🍬🍬

Note: I am aware of the fact that "used to" is commonly used to express a past habit that is no longer practiced and simple past is used to express about an action that happened in the past. I'm confused about the use of past simple in this sentence because the action of hanging boughs over doors and windows would have been habitual.

In Japan I associate Christmas with mainly three things: what we call 'Decoration cake', which is a big whole cake covered with lots of whipped cream and strawberries, roast chicken, and illuminations on the streets, which I'd say are related to commercialism, not alone religion. Their sizes vary greatly, but usually they are smaller than the ones in North America. Another common tradition here is the nativity scene.
