  • Son of Aughra!? Who is this Raunip and what was his haunting vision for the future of Thra? All this and more on our latest Lore video about all things The Dark Crystal.
This video concludes with the 2011 Free Comic Book Day story. "Archaia Entertainment is proud to present an exclusive prelude to its forthcoming series of DARK CRYSTAL graphic novels, featuring covers, art direction and concepts by Brian Froud, conceptual designer of the original film! This prelude begins the epic creation story of the world of Thra, and explores the origins of the world of the Dark Crystal!"
I give that just cause it seemed to be the best history on Raunip without any spoilers. Enjoy!

I believe if he shows up in the AOR second season, he’d be voiced by Frank Oz, being one of the fathers of the Muppets, he’d have the role of one of the most significant characters in the Thra-verse. Either that or Peter Dinklage, as a meta Imp joke as the unintentional Serpent In the Garden of Eve that caused the whole catastrophe in Thra.

Along with the exclusive of SkekUng from Season 1, I was also super disappointed that they didn't even really mention Raunip, let alone show him for a few seconds in a flashback or something. He is a pretty important character in the lore. He distrusted the UrSkeks, for better and for worse, when his own "all-wise" mother/creator was willfully blind to the danger they could pose, and that they didn't belong on Thra. He was skeptical, while she was wowed by their knowledge of the stars. She neglected her duties to Thra, because they built her a means of exploring space. Her "son" saw through all of this early on, but she wouldn't listen to him.
Though he was also, technically, the partial cause behind one of the UrSkeks remaining impure enough to cause the division.

The two different eyes aren't merely an aesthetic choice. The size difference and the orange and blue colors are significant. Orange, being a warm color, is associated with yang. Blue, being a cool color, is associated with Yin. Notice how his "yang" eye appears more assertive. Also, if they're going for some sort of "eye of Horus" symbolism, the left eye of Horus is associated with Thoth and the moon (further emphasizing the yin aspect), while the right eye of Horus is associated with Ra and the sun (further emphasizing the yang aspect). The Skeksis could also be said to represent yang, while the urRu represent Yin. This is all in keeping with Taoism since the Taoist view is that "good" results from energies being in balance and harmony, whereas "evil" (or just plain "bad") results from their being out of balance or separated.
    2:07 Notice the ouroboros.
2:16 Cast up from the "Earth?" But isn't this the planet Thra?
3:22 Why is there a comma between "magic" and "shining?" You only need commas to separate three or more adjectives or adverbs. There are only two adjectives there ("magic" and "shining"), ergo, no need for a comma.
4:01 Do you know where that phrase "as above, so below" comes from?

    • @DarkCrystalConjunction
      @DarkCrystalConjunction  5 років тому +3

Regarding " 2:16 Cast up from the "Earth?" But isn't this the planet Thra?" "earth" can be used to just mean ground, terrain, terra... it is used that way in this context, not as the proper noun for our planet. :)
And their 3:22 haha, I can geek out on grammar as well,... ya, I assume they mean to just seperate "the magic" as it was not needed for the sentence. So it should have said: "For they unearthed (noticed the use of earth there as well) the great crystal, the magic, shining heart of the world..." But they already used a dash so they didn't need the comma after magic... I agree... Gelfling grammar? :P
"as above, so below", the creators Froud, and Henson did say they studied a lot of ancient religions and mysticism and embedded it into Thra to give it a more archaic feel. This all the sacred geometry, etc... that phrase also reminds me of the phrase. "on Earth, as it is in Heaven".

My young friends have told me about it and showed me videos, but I haven't invested the time nor the energy to become deeply familiar with the characters and story. I have read more about the symbolism behind Baphomet as Eliphas Levi's representation of balance between opposites, but it has been largely appropriated by various occultists as a representation of Pan or Cernunnos the Horned god or even Lucifer. As such, I can appreciate the original intention behind the creation of Baphomet, but now it's become a sort of occult "catch all" symbol that has been interpreted and reinterpreted over the centuries.

I am totally new to this stuff. Raunip, and Augra. Her missing eye. How she couldn't see this "Vision" yet he could. Who is his father? She sprang from the Earth, has no other, yet have "birth"? I think rather she took her one eye, the same eye that glows when he see the vision, and made Raunip from herself. That would, clear to me, be as easy as it is.

Aughra, according to the novelization, was supposed to be monoeceous-- self replicating. She had both male and female parts, but her male parts withered away over time. Just imagine what her biological offspring would have looked like. Younger Aughras! Because she didn't reproduce herself, Thra must have extended her lifespan. Perhaps she didn't like the idea of mothering a replacement for herself. Kind of selfish, really!

I admit, I don't know every story and movie under the sun, but I believe The Dark Crystal is near enough the only, or at the very least amongst the very first, story in which the good guys are not inherently beautiful. Raunip and Augrah are almost hideous but certainly good. And it might well be that the Skeksis are ugly only due to the corruption, that they may have been less disgusting in the early years after the breaking.

Tavra (TAH-vra) was a Vapra warrior and daughter of the Gelfling All-Maudra. Tavra was originally sent by her mother to find the Gelfling traitors Rian and Gurjin, but later came to realize the truth of the situation and tried to protect them instead.
