I always had apples grated, grated onion, one grated potato and a bay leaf to sauerkraut and pork. I also do the same thing if I am just making sauerkraut. I think people who don't like it don't realize that it's not really meant to be eaten from the jar. It's meant to be cooked with something and have flavors added to it everybody loves my sauerkraut who used to hate sauerkraut! Sometimes I will do it with pork chops sometimes country pork boneless ribs sometimes I will put some sausage in with the pork and it's a great German and Polish meal! :-)
Right now on Amazon someone is selling Reynolds Crock-Pot liners six to a box for $3 a box. I purchased four boxes because being disabled if I cook when my caregiver is not here I have no way to clean the crock pot insert.
there is an Estonian dish called "mulgi kapsad" (cabbage from the Mulk people) which is a sauerkraut stew, with sauerkraut and pork (traditionally tails, but I use chops) with added barley (and sometimes caraway seed), stewed for 2 or 3 hours (maybe longer in crock pot?); usually no potatoes in it, but might add boiled potatoes when serving
