I once saw an interview with that guy and he kind of had an explanation for that. He understood the question wrong and thought should name an animal with the same letter three times in the word but he admitted that even then his answer was wrong because alligator only has two "l's" in it.
He could have said cow.

Honestly, if we're talking prices TODAY, that guys bid of 60,000 might not be to far off. Those two bikes probably cost around 15-20k each today. Price of lumber is gone made, probably a good 3-4k in that furniture set. He may of been around 20k off and pretty close to that lady today.

But when a question is phrased like this I, too, would get confused...
To be fair, that "brand of gas" question doesn't really make sense. Shell, Mobile, and other brands are probably associated more as gas stations than the brand of the gas they sell. Personally, my first thought is that gas is gas, and has no brand, so their answers make about as much sense as anything else.
