    Hello from France! I watch your channel to learn about repairing VCRs. I run a workshop store that also does recycling, and she was surprised to see a VHS tape from my town where I was born! Amazing! Thank you for everything you teach me, and maybe I too will post a video of your birthplace!!! My shop is in Migennes in Yonne, in Burgundy where there is the best wine! Pascal! sorry for my school english!!!

    About 3 years ago I got this same deck off someone on Facebook Marketplace and he said it worked fine. Common thing that they all say. So I get it home and of course it does not work. I only paid like 40 bucks for it. I inspected the unit and it was the worm gear that was cracked. Ordered a new one cheap and replaced it and it works great now. Thankful that no cap issues at this time.

    In practice the advantages SECAM had were mostly theoretical, as the format was almost impossible to edit before digital processing became available. French TV companies would commonly have PAL editing suites, and convert between PAL and SECAM in the chain. You can see on some very old French footage that the image would usually go black-and-white during transitions for this reason as well,and you'd get a lot of non-synced jumps on French networks in the 1970s (before frame buffers became the norm) - a common trick on PAL stations to synch up two sources that weren't gen locked was to "nudge" the timing slowly to match it up in the few seconds before cutting to the other source - this was impossible on SECAM (it would result in visible colour corruption on-screen) so they just used to cut over with no lock, which VCRs had a hard time dealing with!
    I've found that wood glue of all things works to gum up nylon gears enough to work... I had a 6-disc CD cartridge changer (JVC I think, it was in an off-brand unit but the laser was JVC) which had a worm gear that kept throwing itself out. Used wood glue as a temporary fix and it worked for months, so have used it on a few other things and it seems to work well - advantage being that it's thinner and fills the space more effectively.

    Still need to dig into my mx 100 that I scored for cheap. Have the mono version of that one too, they do indeed a fine job of converting back and forth.

    You mentioned grounding. I have a JVC HR-D606U VHS player. It had “comets” on all tapes. I though there was an issue with the heads, so I got a new set of heads but it still does the same thing. Pretty sure there is an issue with static/head grounding. I did attach an additional ground strap to the top of the head drum, but the comets are still there. I read where there is a redesigned part internally to the head drum that addresses this. Do you happen to remember this issue or know of a workaround to this issue?

    Thanks for the video. Been watching your videos for quite some time, but this one finally got me to recap my SV-5000 and fix the comets/grounding issue. However, I do need some assistance. In the disassembly, a lower pinch roller torsion spring fell off and I have a hard time figuring where it goes. It is the one on the lower right corner, near the tape entrance. Would appreciate an advice or even a close up photo, so that I could assemble the unit and transfer some tapes. Thanks in advance.

      This one has gone back to its owner. I don't recall off hand where the spring goes.

    I have a Samsung SE DVD3E (or something, dvd/vhs function). It will not wind back tape after stopping, and if I try to Eject, it tries to do the function, but stops and shuts completely off before it finishes. If I keep doing that over and over and over, eventually I can it to eject, but with loose tape inside the machine. Does this sound like typical mode switch stuff or something?

    SECAM had the annoying issue that on the slightest signal degradation the color went basically blue-red and you coudln't see anything anymore. It was called "SECAM fire".

    Was MESECAM basically same as SECAM?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому +1

      MESCAM is middle east secam. Its similar but different, and was a way to record a secam signal to a modified PAL recorder. In the VCR world there was NTSC, PAL, MESECAM and SECAM. The true secam was france only and they had VCRs that specifically only recorded and played their specific tape format. This samsung for example supports both the french secam and mesecam tape formats however it does not have a french secam tuner in it.
      The tape I played if I attempt to play it on another machine I have that supports PAL and mesecam it only plays in black and white. I did a video earlier in the year where I did a direct comparison. I have a VCR that supports NTSC, PAL and MESECAM and I did recordings in the various modes to show the results and used a multi system monitor.
      Here is a link to that video.

    I dont think even pal was perfect, but with a good antenna and well set up tv, it could look excellent, outside golf looked amazing, and indoor snooker was pin sharp.
    Then we were forced to use crap t.v boxes that had such a low quality picture.
    I gave up and never watched t.v again.
    The death of quality.

    • @kyoudaiken
      @kyoudaiken Рік тому

      PAL certainly had its drawbacks, too. It needed elaborate comb filtering to account for the Hannover bars. But it was much more resilient when the signal was degraded compared to NTSC or SECAM.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому

      Actually NTSC did well in poor signal conditions. Had the sound been at 6.5mhz and color sub been at 4.43 there would have been much more bandwidth available and the picture would rival pal. Those of us that had the big satellite dishes got to experience this. The sound was thpically 6.2 and 6.8mhz and the video was fm modulated. The bandwidth was great and the pictures beautiful.
      Much like laserdisk, which is essentially the same way that the signal was modulated. Laserdisk used fm modulation and the audio was not at 4.5mhz which limited the horizontal bandwidth. Sure pal had 45 more scanning lines per field that wasn't what make the picture so much better. It was the horizontal bandwidth that applied to each and every line. Pal VHS doesn't look any better than ntsc. It actually is softer as the head drum speed is lower and this results in lower horizontal bandwidth even though it has more scanning lines.
