Good Price, Great Sound... I'm Falling in Love! | Rare Blonde Color | Jazz Archtop Guitar Review

  • Here is another guitar that I just bought and I am absolutely loving the sound of it! It has that fat jazz tone thanks in part to the pickup. This Eastman AR805CE is blonde which is rare for this particular model. Most of them are sunburst. This one also has a cool, custom-made tail-piece made by Bob Benedetto. Sadly, I am putting this one up for sale because I simply have too many guitars in my collection at the moment. But I am really impressed by how good it sounds. It is reasonably priced which makes it a great option for a beginner jazz player or a jazz master. Let me know what you think of the tone. Leave me a comment! Thanks for watching!

    Hello Rich: I have one of these and agree completely with your assessment, it's a beautiful, well made guitar with a great sound, and it was available at a price I could afford. There is no way I could have justified the price of the USA made equivalent, or a boutique hand made non-Chinese instrument. These are hand made I believe, and to me they are democracy in action; allowing people like me to play something of a quality we would otherwise only be able to dream of.
    BTW I enjoy your playing very much - it's the main reason I watch your channel.

    I've had plenty of big bout cutaways, from Guild to Hofner to Jay Turser and or course Gibson. But every one of f them cut into my forearm when I played them. All gone. Recently I uploaded two old videos of all my old guitars on youtube before I sold them all in one sale. Even the '52 Les Paul. Sweet memories.

    I have an 805CE 7 string version. Amazingly responsive and a joy to play. Mine is 16" and fits my arms and body even better than my 17" Gibson Johnny Smith. Its body dimensions contribute to a really balanced sound with clarity in the whole range. You mentioned that you thought yours was 17" across, mine is 16" and has the sound of a big jazz box with the comfort of a slightly smaller body hugging instrument. I love the neck.

    I've got an Eastman AR905CE and love it, in part because of the 'Selmer' shaped cutaway. Eastman's AR605CED has the same shape, but with 2 top-mounted pickups. I'm trying to find a plywood construction archtop with the same shape, to replace my AR371CE-2. Do you (or does anyone else) have any suggestions? Thanks!

    I picked up a T386/ ES335 copy and am really impressed. It's tht lowest model and to be honest the 486 is a couple hundred dollars more and is worth that higher price and then some. The 386 has a plain top vs flamed, but it's the nicest plain top I've seen with really deep grain. It has DOT inlays vs trapezoid. Better hardwear, Duncan Jazz/59 vs whatever no name the base model has. The only reason I went for the 386 is that I hate the Ibanez/old Greco style ice cream cone shaped headstock and the 386 looks more like the more recent Epiphone Kalamazoo version.
    I've repaired guitars for 20 years and have been an amp tech/builder for a little less than 15. Normally cosmetic things aren't high on my priority, but with headstocks you're ALWAYS seeing it. But they're a really nice choice if you want that warmer, airy midrange of a semihollow, but with a bit more bite and presence. The 4 piece (or is it 3? Im drawing a blank) laminated maple neck makes it really stable. The added attack that comes from the maple with ebony fretboard over mahogany/rosewood makes it a bit more versatile. Plus I have literally draws of pickups and various hardwear to use.
    $950/new, with a hardshell case and lacquer finish was a no brainer.

    See the problem with these guitars is not their construction or the materials it is simply that the acoustic sound produced by the floating pick up here is not very warm and when I first started playing guitars I noticed that these were considered superior compared to in the body hum bucker L5 guitars.In other words these floating pick up guitars do have more of an acoustic sound but it is hard to project them on the stage and then perform as unless you’re sitting in your den at home where there’s no other noise. The projection of this sound is very weak. So after buying the model above and a Johnny Smith and several other guitars a Benedetto I found them wanting in terms of the jazzy sound that you can get with a hum bucker pick up. And I sold all of them.

    • @grantgre
      @grantgre 2 роки тому

      The closest guitar with a floating pick up that I’ve heard that sounds warm was the original herb Ellis es165 . and the occasional Johnny Smith or Legrand. also George Benson in the GB 10 and GB models get a more projecting sound but they’re not necessarily warm.
      I think Peter Bernstein as a guitar that has a large humbucker floating pick up and I was wondering why people I have not tried to put these kind of pick ups on these purely acoustic guitars like him.

    I have to admit these look and sound very good, and are excellent value. But I won't buy one. Why? Made in China. Especially when there are numerous high quality makers in North America

      @RichSeversonGuitar  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting, Neil! I do understand your concern and your choice not to buy Chinese. I know this may not matter to you but one thing I will say, is that every Eastman I do buy is used and comes from an American guitar dealer or a guitar shop here in the USA. Since I am not buying them straight from Eastman my money is not going to China, it stays here in the USA. I have never bought a brand new Eastman guitar because of the reasons you explained. I DO NOT work for Eastman as a lot of people assume. As I said, I buy them all used and after someone else has sent their money to China. @@RichSeversonGuitar Thank you for you reply Rich, and your views. Buying used is one way to avoid buying Chinese made goods directly, however imho, this supports the used market which in turn provides an outlet for more new goods. I admit it's quite difficult today to avoid these goods as so much of our North American manufacturing had been taken over by Chinese companies, or Amercan companies who produce goods cheaper there. We need to support our own North American (USA,Canada,Mexico) makers who still produce here. I was quite happy to buy a lightly used Taylor 224ce K recently, made in Mexico. Excellent 👍

    Hey Rich, how about promoting American-made guitars instead of Chinese copies? Everything the Chinese make is either stolen/copied/reverse-engineered from US makers. There isn't a single Chinese guitar that is original in any way. Isn't it about time you started showing us some American guitars? I know there's some really good ones who could use the publicity. Or do you work for Eastman?

    • @RichSeversonGuitar
      @RichSeversonGuitar  2 роки тому +9

      Joe, If you start helping me pay for American-made guitars, then I will start promoting more of them. Or if you know of a source where I can buy them cheaper... please let me know. My goal for my channel is to spread the love and joy people get from playing great sounding jazz guitars. There is no denying that this guitar sounds amazing despite it not being American. The fact is, I cannot afford to pay $4,000-$5,000 dollars every time I buy a new guitar. I have some American made guitars that I have featured on here and no one wants to buy them because they are just too expensive! It has gotten out of control. I try to buy American-made guitars as much as I can but guitars like Eastman are actually much more affordable and realistic for people who want to get a jazz sound. It is not my fault that there are only a few American jazz guitar makers and the prices are so high. It's hard to avoid it. Joe, if you know of some American-made jazz guitar brands that I should feature, or that I do not know about, or even ones from other foreign countries besides china (ie. Mexico, Korea, ETC.) please let me know and I will feature them! I hope you continue to watch my channel and I very much appreciate and value your opinion. Thanks for your comment!
