@@aswaltan8962the video gave wrong info The real reason is we don’t eat ground vegetables because they have many living organisms If you just take a needle and pinch it, on that needle there will be infinite amount of organisms which can’t be seen through our eyes So we don’t eat ground vegetables This also makes us not to take interest in foods and eat what we have There are many vegetables which are grown above ground we eat those, and paddy, Jawar etc many things we eat
A Jain friend once told me that they don't eat rooted vegetables because when digging the vegetables it can harm worms and other small insects living under the soil. It's not because "plants have feelings". They eat other fruits and vegetables because they can pluck it without harming an animal. I don't know if you'll have noticed but the categorization of what is a "living creature" has come from western sciences. In ancient India and south asian region, what we deemed as living is "prana" and only animals and humans are deemed as "prana". Plants, fungi and micro organisms like bacteria and viruses are deemed as "aprana". By Prana it means consciousness or the ability to have emotions. And this is what matter at the end of the day when you go on with your lives, if you are harming a creature/organism that is conscious. Even if you look at science it's obvious that to have emotions and feel pain you need to have a functioning nervous system connected to a brain.
Honestly, that is a very good point. I've never asked that from a Jain. I assume they can't dig and plant seeds cause that might harm insects and other creatures. So I don't think they can be farmers with that point. Unless however there is something I don't know about Jainsm in regards to growing seeds. I've heard that People who practice Jainism to a high level only eat fruits or vegetables that are plucked from trees and they try to live in a way they try to be conscious with every step they take not to harm any animal. It's about living a fully ahimsa life. I personally don't agree with everything in Jainism philosophy. I respect and admire all the teachings and it is all well intended to all conscious beings but, I don't think it is practical for a human to live a fully ahimsa life according to Jainism especially in the modern age. I also don't think it makes you a bad person if you are walking to your house and you accidentally step on an ant, the same way if a dog jumps in front of your car when you are driving and you accidentally kill it.

Okay so let me clarify We eat some of the veggies because we also need to survive. Besides it is seen terrestial plants has less microorganisms than the rooted or underground ones. Not asudh. Garlic and onion are considered RAJO foods. They increase Rajas feelings, which should be avoided during meditation or prayers because having acidic foods causes discomfort.
The story behind this is when the lord Vishnu accidently gave amrit to rahu ketu who was an Asur because he changed his appearance due to which lord Vishnu cutted his head and the few drops of amrit present in rahu ketu's mouth fell on the ground which lead to growth of onion and garlic and all consider these both plant ashudh because it is originated from an Asur's mouth

I am glad whatever they use to make food I always find Jain food way more delicious than any other food which have garlic and onion . Evem their dal is amazing
As a jain myself, I am hurt by seeing the comments, we try to minimise the cruelty, the oragnisms killed while removing root vegetables are more than any other plant, so we avoid having it especially in the months of july, august, september and october. So before commenting on any other religion, research properly and stop spreading unnecessary hate. Definitely think abt ur comments coz it will hurt other religion's sentiments and jainism is also a religion born in India and it is definitely a very peaceful one. Not only that we have also been telling that eating, speaking and even breathing kill microorganisms and now science proves it. It is there in our scriptures since ages, and these things are the basic necessity for our survival. We avoid doing unnecessary Hinsa ( killing ). Edit : And abt the paddy and other crops grown like this when the plant is pulled out sure the organisms are killed but the plant continues to grow further and those grains are really very essential for our survival so we do eat it. Edit - Also recently came across that root vegetables especially onions contain Sulphur which is not easy for your body to digest especially during july, august, september and october, so by not eating it during chaumasa it is good for your health itself and it's easier to fast during these months, that is, u learn to let go of things.

Yes, but still whole lifecycle of plant gets finished after getting them for food.
11th bio- 😅😂😂
no potato is taken from the soil after the plant died or every part of plant become dried
But it is the end of the plant. Not stem, the bulbs are underneath
But in order to harvest a plant or sow a seed, we need to dig the soil. Are u saying, Jain's can never be farmers?

Jain is a peaceful community. No hatred towards anyone,no propaganda behind our back, fully nationalists. That's why we always support them.
Well this is called life cycle nature has made it like this.
