Borderlands 3 did this again.
A fan had a terminal illness (I think cancer) and asked if he could learn the Borderlands 3 storyline, since he wouldn't make it till release.
He was not just allowed that, he was allowed to play the game, as far as it had been completed and also to design his own legendary weapon. They named it Trevornator in the fans honor.

On top of playing they then story boarded the rest of the game in the hospital the fan base was aware this was happening...no one leaked anything so it believed he wasn't harassed by fans for Info ..even when they knew he had info

When Lance Redick passed away. A bunch of players stood guard to offer their respect to Zavala, the character he voiced with such care.

Just another mention is that of Rick May. He voiced soldier in TF2. When he died they put statues of soldier in many different maps with his name on them.
Not only that, when you walked up to one it would play one of soldier's lines.

The Technoblade one always gets me, his death ROCKED the community and even gave his dad an incredible platform and community to help those in need and immortalize his son’s legacy.
When he died i was scrolling through a tf2 forum and instantly all the talk was about him, the internet shook that moment
And then the developers decided to take away his immortalisation and any pigs from the Minecraft Launcher as well... I still don't get why they did that....

One that really hits home is what happened to destiny when lance reddick died. He was the voice for commander zavala who is one of the main characters and one of the most beloved ones at that. When Lance sadly passed from natural causes there was a flood of destiny players who went to the place where the character he played was and kneeled to the point where there were entire servers doing just that. This is crazy bc the members of the d2 community hate on eachother for the dumbest shit yet all of them were united to pay respects to such a great person. RIP Lance. Fly high.
You know your loved and respected when your passing causes hundreds of thousands of trolls who hate each other to unite in a moment of solidarity.

I was one of the many people to go kneel where Zavala is in the Tower. God, his death hurt, especially as a Titan main myself.
I was one of the players to attend that i cried my step dad who plays a titan also joined me
The ones I saw saluted on either side of him. I wasnt too connected to him like I was with Techno but I paid my respects like I was looking at a great warrior either way.

Absolutely. It is, by far, and away, the BEST community of gamers I have ever stumbled across. From the devs interactions with their players, to how kind, and supportive everyone is of each other, it is my favorite game, and will absolutely remain so for a long, long time to come!

When Lance Reddick(the voice actor for Commander Zavala in the Destiny series) died, I remember playing the game at that moment I heard the news. Within minutes, people had gathered around his NPC, Zavala’s location in the Tower, paying respects with emotes like kneeling, or parading a banner.
That last one. I took part in it. Never have i ever seen a community be together and put aside differences. I was also apart of the in game vigil all of us Guardians held near Zavala when his voice actor Lance Reddick passed in Destiny 2. Rest in Eternal Peace to all of these people 🕊️
I still remember the day me and my brother hopped on destiny to honor Lance Reddick. He didn’t think much of it but I shed tears. Mans was a good part of my childhood

The last one reminds me of one that happened around Easter this… with Lance Reddick. When he passed away, guardians, even those who hadn’t played Destiny 2 in a while, all gathered around the character he voiced, Commander Zavala, and used the emotes to either sit around him, go crazy and have fun like he would wanted players to have or straight recreate a military ceremony.
He was not only very invested in the community, a good example is him voicing the “Excuse me” meme, but he was also a D2 player and played the game the night before his passing.
He also voiced one of my favorite characters in the horizon games, Sylens. He was so cool, and it sucks that he had to go.
I did the same thing. I had started to drift from the game, but when I heard what happened, I logged in and sat with Zavala for a bit…..

When Rick May (Voice actor for soldier TF2) passed away from covid, if I recall, the devs for a month added a golden statue of the character. They added voice lines form soldier when you get close to it. I think that was a great way to honor Rick for his work.
They added a permament statue of him on cp_granary

Let's not forget about Rick May, the voice actor for the soldier in Team Fortress 2 who passed away in 2020 because of COVID. The community made various memorial videos and Valve put statues of the Soldier in certain maps. My childhood was TF2 and thus Rick May is too.

Kentaro Miura's tribute in FFXIV was incredible. So many Dark Knights just standing there with campfires in front of them. And for a game that he had little to do with other than his influence was incredible

There was an extremely well known UA-camr in the WoW community named Reckful, a Rogue. He was a guy I’d been watching ever since he started making content, as I was all in on Rogue PvP ever since I started playing almost 2 decades ago. A few years ago he lost his battle against depression and left us behind. To commemorate his passing and pay tribute to his impact on the WoW community as a whole, they made a Rogue Trainer with the exact appearance and name of his character within the Cathedral of Light in the city of Stormwind, the most player-populated city since the creation of the game

The warframe one reminds me of when Lance Reddick passed and the entire Destiny Community gathered in the tower to honour him

The way the destiny fan base honored lance riddick was quite touching as well.
You had to be there. Every single guardian on every server I joined saluted or sat with the titan vanguard(cannot for the life of me remember the characters name)
Not just one server, but every server.
It was an incredible send off for an incredible man.

I had no idea gun guy from Borderlands 2 was a tribute to someone who passed away but gun guy has always been my favorite character in Borderlands 2 and this is just made him even more of my favorite character especially knowing that he's a tribute to a to a person that loved the game so much just like I did.

Ngl you will never find a more lovely and non toxic community than Warframe. I have been playing Warframe for almost 5 years and never interacted with any toxic player. All players take their time to explain you if u are new and help u in missions. Simply the best game for me

The final one, that shows dedication. As many people all found a time to get together to kneel for the fallen. It’s a wonderful thing when players decide to not be toxic to one another and coordinate a time for moments like this. Team Fortress 2 I think did something like this, putting a golden statue of Soldier, as the voice actor of Soldier, Rick May, died. I always say “RIP Rick May, you were great, maybe even the best.”

yeah thing is i’m part of the warframe community and i can say that with certainty that almost everyone in the community would do something i remember that day when i heard about biscuit thing is his video about the game is what got me into it years ago it was truly a sad day when the news hit the community
A great one is Rick May the voice actor of the soldier from Team Fortress 2.
Following his death hordes of people flooded servers to salute and honor his death. The developers (regardless of the few remaining) also added an update to one of the maps with a statue of the soldier dedicated to Rick May’s passing.
Fun fact, this happens every year in April, and they're spread across several maps.
It's not uncommon to see everyone drop their backpacks and do nothing but twenty-one gun salute the statues for the entire round

There’s a few of these type of tributes in rainbow six siege for a few players who passed and were huge parts of the community. It’s a bitter sweet thing with these things cause on one have they’ve been immortalized forever in something that they loved but on the other they aren’t around to watch that community grow into something bigger and better.
For me, the saddest gaming passing was Tinfoilchef. All the other hermits all honored him in their own way. But what I find nicest is in Decked Out, if a hermit gets Tinfoilchef’s artifact, they always become way more motivated to actually make it out of the dungeon

I remember when Reckful died, we were so many players gathered in the Cathedral in Stormwind City that the servers started phasing us because they couldn't handle everyone being there.
Not to mention not just alliance. Horde was there too but even on pvp servers there was no fighting

Warframe has another permanent one too. In the player hub called "Iron Wake", on top of one of the structures, you can find a small shrine to the player known as Datareaper, who not only was an avid fan of the game, but also created fan-made concepts that eventuslly got added to the game legitimately. The character "Clem" (who's also found up there), and the Weapon called "Kronen" which is featured on the Shrine, were both designed by Datareaper and were added to the game by the Devs before his passing.

The last story is super sweet they all are of course but the fact a whole bunch of probably strangers came together to share that moment is very wholesome, the gaming community is honestly one of the most wholesome groups y’all make friends with literally anybody.

Just a reminder for people to remember Lance Reddick, he voice acted Commander Zavala in Destiny 2, Many players honored him by kneeling by his character in game RIP
There was also the exotic weapon Fate of all Fools (Jade Rabbit in D2) that was made for a guardian that was battling cancer

I booted up the game after months of not playing just to pay my respects. I haven't played D2 in a while now, but I'm always going to love the time I spent with it and Zavala was a huge part of it. RIP Lance.
as a warframe fan, i didn't even know about that tribute. i think that's awesome honestly. it really just shows how nice the warframe community is.
Aside from the grinding the game is really fun either solo or with friends. Best part is that you can get anything free (just sell stuff to other people lol)

So for Warframe, they had a Devstream when TotalBuscuit passed and they learned about it while going over the stream and their response to it is so heartbreaking, you can tell that even the devs cared about him.
I miss TB everyday. Man was the best of the gaming community. Passion and knowledge.

I need you to cover destiny 2 now. When lance reddick died, the voice of the titan vanguard and one of the main characters, the entire destiny community went to his character in the game and created an entire emoting tribute to his character in his honour. R.I.P Lance ❤ the true titan vanguard
I was gonna mention that, I remember playing the game with my friend when I heard the news of his passing, within 3 minutes of getting back to tower, everyone was surrounding Zavala and emoting (respectfully) in his honor

I remember that moment of silence in Warframe. I remember gathering with everyone to kneel in TotalBiscuit’s memory.
Not a dead player, but Team Cherry really went out of their way for someone. Theres a fan of Hollow knight named Seth, who has a terminal illness and qualified for Make A Wish. When he said he wanted to be in Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry didnt just make him a background character; Seth's original character will be a full-on boss fight in the new game as a sort of gift to him, and im pretty sure he got to meet the fellows from Team Cherry.
Too bad we haven't heard anything from them in a while.

We couldn't fit too many people at a time into each instance of the Tower, but when Lance Reddick (who voiced Commander Zavala) passed away, thousands of guardians went to sit by his character in game.

There’s a really touching tribute in Dying Light for a kid called David Acott who was a huge fan of the game, he died of cancer shortly after it released at just 17. His videos are still on YT where he talks about his excitement and love for the game. They made a mural of his face and a wolf (his YT channel BadWolf) on a wall in the game as a tribute. For some reason whenever I see the topic of gaming tributes I always think about David in particular because I was his age when the game released.
