Meat is getting extremely expensive in Canada as well, where it should not be since we have so many farms and ranches. However, our government has interfered and deliberately made it very hard for ranchers to make a profit (the government is saving the planet this way 🙄). The meat gift packs, cooking oil packs and fruit gift packs are very beautiful in Korea. Happy Chuseok!

SPAM is an interesting one because it’s a cheap canned meat, but Koreans love it. It sort of comes down to the Korean War and wartime civilian rations. Korea was a very poor and poverty striken country when the war started. The war put extra strain on food availability in the country, and the Americans came in with the saving grace food staples, including SPAM. It was a cheap meat and it was used a lot in the war by both soldiers and civilians. A tradition began to form where giving SPAM to family and friends was a special thing to do. Now, it’s a commonplace practice to gift SPAM to family and friends to show your gratitude and charity.
It’s one of those modern traditions that seem bizarre at first until you consider the history behind it.

Does the beef not need to be refrigerated? It didnt even look like it was on ice. Anyway, meat is expensive everywhere.

I love learning about another culture's holidays. The focus on meat, even canned meat, as a gift, I found interesting.
The pre-made gift packages showed me the similarities between Korea and the United States. Sometimes, here in the US, we also purchase pre-made or select and 'make' gift baskets, that can include different foods to give as gifts. They can be 'themed' - like for a new home, baby, or a specific celebration.
Thanks for helping me find the similarities, not the differences. 🙇‍♀️🕊🫰🦋🇺🇸
