It's like playing Shenmue for the first time, in that, even though there are newer, more graphically impressive open world games, Shenmue still feels more real because of how accurate the world feels to our own.
The Mexican would be extra hard. You’d have to deal with overheating, faulty hydraulic systems, flat or damaged tires, flooded tracks and collapsing overhead tracks. Arriving or even leaving the station would be rare achievements.

Train driving games are my 2nd favorite after car driving games. The first time I saw Densha De Go running was in 2001 at a gaming exhibition at the Barbican in London. It was a Deluxe Arcade with a massive screen. I wanted to play it but the queue was long and the whole place was packed. After that I bought the Dreamcast version from CEX. These were the days when CEX sold imports and had some integrity. Densha De Go 2 is Rock-Hard compared to the later games but is really rewarding. In the last 4 years I've bought all the PC Densha De Go games apart from the bullet train version. I also have a few PC train controllers including the last one Taito made. It was for Densha De Go Final. The controller is Big. It's the same size as my Xbox 360 and has arcade sized buttons it's really good to play with. Mark, you missed out one version. There is a 2nd version for the PC. It's called Densha De Go 2 3000 like the Dreamcast version but it's enhanced for the PC. It has SVGA resolution 800 x 600. The graphics are really sharp and crisp. It's easily the best looking version of Densha De Go 2. Only DDG 3 and DDG Professional 2 look better on the PC in my opinion.
@@RetroCore The Updated PC version runs as good if not better than the Dreamcast version. The higher resolution on the PC version and cleaner textures with minimal warping makes it the version to play. When I owned the Dreamcast version it was one of the games that didn't support VGA via my VGA box so I had to play it at 240p resolution. That's a night & day difference compared to a native 600p SVGA resolution on a PC especially with Densha De Go 2"s graphics engine. Taito changed to a new graphics engine for Densha De Go 3. That game looks completely different. It has dynamic time of day, better rain effects and on the PC version you can sync the time to follow the real-world time that's on your Windows desktop.
A quick note to thank you for this excellent UA-cam channel which has become one of my favorites. You have a lot of courage to test all these games on so many different media. This gives an excellent overview. Bravo, and thank you for this fabulous work 👍
Great video! DDG2 is still my fav game on this series, being the hardest and most unforgiving of them all. To be fair, the port of ddg 2 3000bandai (the update of 2) on pc has some lines that are still exclusive to that version, and were only available on the dc port of that same game. The graphic engine used on the arcade version and ps1 ports are completely different and i think it was nearly impossible to translate that console exclusive stuff into those ports.

You and me both! To me now it's annoying even when they're 1 minute late but back in 1996 on my first visit to Japan, I was amazed at how punctual the trains were.

Always found the visuals of Densha De Go very impressive no matter the support. I watched Thabeast's run of the game in his series of beating every N64 game and it is pretty good (and as someone who isn't into simulations, that's something) ^^.

They're not that difficult to get in to if you can understand the language. However that is the major hurdle for most. The N64 version does have an English patch mind you, so that may be worth checking out.
Oh! I had to take a trip down memory lane. I noticed that I had already watched your early episode on the ports of the first Densha de Go title. That video was released 8 years ago in 2015. This one is much bigger with 8 ports to analyse compared to the maiden title's 4 versions.
Those maps are insane. I mostly played the modern similar games, which use video for the tracks. But these are great. It's not like every house is there, but they certainly looks very faithful. Best thing on these games is to ride the real track you know from the game and watch the driver nail it.

Anyway, do you still have the custom controller for the Dreamcast version? That was pretty cool.
I can see why this series never left Japan, it hardly seems like the type of game people here in the US would want to play. Still though, it's impressive to see the GBC version being as good as it is. Nintendo was smart to make it just a boosted version of original GB hardware, as many developers really mastered it by that time.
Games like Microsoft Flight Simulator have been popular here for years and I remember lines waiting for games like Rapid River and Prop Cycle. If they added a few more tracks, some challenges, and tracks from around the world I think the game could have been a niche arcade or PC hit.
Just about made out the train announcement in the arcade version saying the Akita Shinkansen would be stopping next at Morioka, my old local Shinkansen stop before I moved down to Mie :)
I have to admit most of the lines in this game apart from the JR Kyushu ones are unknown to me. Well, besides the common Tokyo lines but even then, they're more of a faint memory than anything else.

You forgot to mention about how DdG! 64 makes use of the VRU / VRS, despite being optional: By yelling "Shupattsu Shinkou" and other Densha terms at the right places, you can get extra bonus seconds than usual (up to 3 for each attempt).

Honestly the 64 version was the first version I tried on emulation back in the day and got me into the rest of the series to be honest. So I'm a bit biased to it. Seeing the other versions and comparing them was a guilty bit of fun

There is a sort of similar game for the 8 bit micros called Southern Belle (sequel: Evening Star) which recreates the journey of a steam locomotive on a trip from London to Brighton in the '30s. This is a bit more speedy and fun I suppose.
Them lucky Railway Kids in Japan even got dedicated controllers, tbh I always found games based on Railways odd despite me owning and enjoying a train set as a kid 🤷♂️✌️ Unusual choice but interesting to see nonetheless as it seems so popular over there. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts 😄✌️
Oh man, they're very popular. Train spotters are also extremely common. Only this morning I spotted 5 taking pictures of the train I was on. I don't get it as it was a standard train that is always in use.

Both the Neo Geo Pocket and GameBoy Colour ports are really impressive. I didn’t know the NGP could do scaling, I had one but I don’t remember any of the games I had using it. And FMV on the GBC is pretty crazy, that must have used a ton of cart space, even at that low resolution. I wonder if any of these have a translation patch, as I’d like to try playing it now! 😅
Nah, it's just typical train station jingle style music. Every train station in Japan has its own jingle that plays when trains pull in. If anything, the Wii sound is ripped of the ttain station jingles.
The Nintendo 64 version is definitely the scary version of the ports because it quickly matches and slightly bests the PS hardware based arcade and PlayStation versions while humming in a ROM Cartridge and also not really tapping the potential of the N64. Would have been nicer if Taito would have had some better dev team handle the N64 version and also made them make both arcade version ports (first and second arcade games) with possible enhancements but of course the game would need to sell some sufficient numbers in Japan too which was the issue of the N64 with some of the 3d games that had a lot of potential and could leap ahead of the competition and that would include somewhat trading blows with the Dreamcast hardware since the latter was mostly treated by the usual easy to dev dev teams as a PC port or high resolution PS ports probably because of the slow numbers of DCs sold initially. Honestly the N64 had the most potential here but only if handled by some close relation with Nintendo and more dedicated programmers but the N64 was barely on on its third year of software progression by 1999 and with Dreamcast it made it obvious that next gen hardware had to be made unless Sega would have had the sense to avoid the jump two years too early.

Is it just me or is the game tough as balls? I played the English fan translation on my Everdrive 64, and could never complete even one of the beginner tracks :(

@@RetroCore Considering that Densha de Go! 2 Kōsoku-hen was released in March 1998, I can't imagine as why would they port it to CPC, considering that Amstrad had it discontinued in 1990, never mind that this home computer was released in 1984. I will admit: Original arcade release does look like its running on a PlayStation Hardware (wobbly polygons & warping textures)😄 As for game's performance on MAME, it is simple: despite being the emulator, MAME does NOT support hardware acceleration. Therefore, the 3D games will produce a mixed performance if emulation isn't pushing the game correctly.
Probably the only time where both the N64 and PS1 beat out the Dreamcast. Yeah, they don't look as good, but they don't look bad either, which combined with the added content makes them the better games in my opinion. Honestly though, all non-handheld versions seemed better than the original arcade! Sacrilegious I know, but the PS1 looks about the same with added content, the N64 looks slightly worse with added content, and the Windows and Dreamcast are identical in terms of content but wipe the floor visually. Overall, my ranking of the ports would go like: 1. Playstation 2. Nintendo 64 3. Dreamcast 4. Windows 5. Arcade 6. Gameboy Color 7. Neo Geo Pocket Color 8. Wonderswan

This game looks boring though (still an excellent Battle of the Ports) but the Game Boy Color port having FMV was insane. I never knew it could be done on a Gameboy Color. I don't know any game ever on the console that did it

I bought a massive box of ps2 games from Japan last month, and it contained Jet de GO!2. It's not quite as exciting as this one, but I still like it.

I think I do still have the DC controller so where. I had a Saturn one at some point too.

the Euro Truck before Euro Truck, and I quite surprise there Windows Version consider the Windows PC game we got from Japan that time mostly 18+.
Windows gaming wasn't popular at the time of this game but it was starting to pick up momentum.

Both the Neo Geo Pocket and GameBoy Colour ports are really impressive. I didn’t know the NGP could do scaling, I had one but I don’t remember any of the games I had using it. And FMV on the GBC is pretty crazy, that must have used a ton of cart space, even at that low resolution.
I wonder if any of these have a translation patch, as I’d like to try playing it now! 😅

Nah, it's just typical train station jingle style music. Every train station in Japan has its own jingle that plays when trains pull in. If anything, the Wii sound is ripped of the ttain station jingles.
The Nintendo 64 version is definitely the scary version of the ports because it quickly matches and slightly bests the PS hardware based arcade and PlayStation versions while humming in a ROM Cartridge and also not really tapping the potential of the N64. Would have been nicer if Taito would have had some better dev team handle the N64 version and also made them make both arcade version ports (first and second arcade games) with possible enhancements but of course the game would need to sell some sufficient numbers in Japan too which was the issue of the N64 with some of the 3d games that had a lot of potential and could leap ahead of the competition and that would include somewhat trading blows with the Dreamcast hardware since the latter was mostly treated by the usual easy to dev dev teams as a PC port or high resolution PS ports probably because of the slow numbers of DCs sold initially.
Honestly the N64 had the most potential here but only if handled by some close relation with Nintendo and more dedicated programmers but the N64 was barely on on its third year of software progression by 1999 and with Dreamcast it made it obvious that next gen hardware had to be made unless Sega would have had the sense to avoid the jump two years too early.
I bought the "Plug & Play" controller, I think it's the PS version but not sure.
Ah, I'm pretty sure that's it's own thing if it's the one that came out about 2 years ago.

I played the English fan translation on my Everdrive 64, and could never complete even one of the beginner tracks :(
It is a tough game but to be fair, DENSHA De Go 2 is probably the most difficult one.
Shame for the Dreamcast version. I was expecting it to be the best by far. That being said, this is a rather strange choice for the Arcade release. Promotional/Educational game?

@@RetroCore Considering that Densha de Go! 2 Kōsoku-hen was released in March 1998, I can't imagine as why would they port it to CPC, considering that Amstrad had it discontinued in 1990, never mind that this home computer was released in 1984.
I will admit: Original arcade release does look like its running on a PlayStation Hardware (wobbly polygons & warping textures)😄
As for game's performance on MAME, it is simple: despite being the emulator, MAME does NOT support hardware acceleration. Therefore, the 3D games will produce a mixed performance if emulation isn't pushing the game correctly.

Probably the only time where both the N64 and PS1 beat out the Dreamcast. Yeah, they don't look as good, but they don't look bad either, which combined with the added content makes them the better games in my opinion. Honestly though, all non-handheld versions seemed better than the original arcade! Sacrilegious I know, but the PS1 looks about the same with added content, the N64 looks slightly worse with added content, and the Windows and Dreamcast are identical in terms of content but wipe the floor visually. Overall, my ranking of the ports would go like:
1. Playstation
2. Nintendo 64
3. Dreamcast
4. Windows
5. Arcade
6. Gameboy Color
7. Neo Geo Pocket Color
8. Wonderswan
Ah, but the Dreamcast is the only one that runs at 60fps 👍

This game looks boring though (still an excellent Battle of the Ports) but the Game Boy Color port having FMV was insane. I never knew it could be done on a Gameboy Color. I don't know any game ever on the console that did it
