Matt, I'm 72 and my dad taught me from a young age.. ALWAYS, ALWAYS take out the spark plugs and add 1/2 cup Marvel Mystery Oil to each cylinder of a stuck engine. Leave it for 24 hours then begin to turn slowly so not to break a ring. He was a die hard Flathead man when he came home from WW2
I'm 72 too, my dad was exactly like yours. Was employed at Willies Motors. My dad used Liquid Wrench to loosen pistons. I just disassembled the engine.
I'm 42 and was going to say the same thing never crank over a dry engine if it stuck I have broke many engines free with ATF or Marvel mystery oil not to many flatheads but lot's of overhead valve engines
Can't understand the thought process to completely fill up the cylinders with oil. I would have just put in enough to cover the top of the pistons to soak it down into the rings. 2 ounces at most.
This has got to be one of the nicest vehicles in your collection, thus far and I would argue that you should keep it as original as possible and restore it as it was back in the day. Just a suggestion, thank you.
Morning Matt, man, I sure would like to have that truck!!!!! I would get it mechanically sound & drive it! One thing I found with vehicles that have been sitting for years is the crap in the oil will settle to the bottom of the oil pan, people pull the dipstick & are amazed how clean the oil is, not really, I bought a 48 KB8 International truck out of a scrap yard, I was told the truck ran, maybe it did but not for years, I pulled the pan & there was 1/2" of crap in the pan, long story short with a tune up, carb rebuild, truck ran great, please....do not let anyone rat or street rod this.truck!!!!! Build on Dudes!!
Matt, For future reference. Put the hand crank in the socket at 7 or 8 o’clock. Put a floor jack under the crank and put pressure on the crank. Let it sit for a few days after cylinder oiling. Mike is right. Pull the head and hone out the rust ridge. What wowee truck. Build the express pickup box and keep it for the shop gopher. Stock model As are not fast, but they are a blast to drive. The new Irontrap logo over the patina on the door would look great! Goof off might take off the red paint. It works on hardware store paint, not on modern uerathanes.
Matt I think it would make a great shop truck. It would be cool to be able to use it to haul one of your other cars to car shows at your local events. The more I see the truck on the channel the more I think you should keep the old girl to play with.
That was painful to watch. Mystery oil is supposed to sit 24 hours and it takes all the work out of freeing up a stuck engine without breaking any parts. Wow...
Hey Matt, Mike We all know you are going to sell it ! It's just a matter of how soon. It is currently a new toy to play with, but you do have other toys that need your attention. It would be fun to play with just to be able to drive an original stock 28/29 model A. It is an experience few of us will ever have. Pulling the head sounds like the first thing to do. Clean up what you can. Put the head back on. Make a new fuel line which we can see is missing. Put an inline filter in the new fuel line as we know it is going to have crap in the tank. The Metalic snap you heard may have been a ring breaking, a stuck valve poping closed or the starter bendex snaping back as it may have been stuck to the flywheel from a previous atempt to start it. Good luck with it and thank you for letting us almost be there for the fun. Live Long, Be Safe and Well
Thank you for the update on the 1928 Ford Model AA Truck ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you guys maybe doing next ! Doing well here in Kansas .
Thank you for the great videos and showing the world your passion for vintage cars. I hope you bring this beauty back fast. I can't wait see more videos on this truck
The bed you're referring to is the type 89A, a bigger version of the '28 to '30 A pickup bed - 84 inches long by approximately 48 inches wide on the 131" wheelbase. Same as the Walton truck.
Looks like she will come back to life again with a bit more massaging. What to do with her? Since you are such a talented fabricator, make a pickup bed like the one you described as being very rare. Since you have the fenders, it would be seem to be a perfect thing to do.
That truck is totally restorable. Keep it as original as possible. Clean it, paint it and drive it as an original. It is really awesome. I envy you on this one. I dream of one day finding something like that.
I stumbled across this video and its predecessor over the weekend, but when I scroll through the videos I don't see any further mention of this truck. Did it get sold off after this video? Or did I just miss any further updates?
That’s sick man. It’s such a great moment when you finally break it free. We’ve been fighting one flat head for a while now and we are refusing to give up!
Ok and this is why I love this channel so much Mike said there's fluid going everywhere And Matt's only reply is o well just throw a rag over it So they can act like they don't even see and just go right back to doing what they're doing LOL great times for this channel
Wrecker body! Those are so rare but so cool cause of the simplicity of the design. Anybody can build a flatbed but a wrecker body would really make the truck unique. If it was me i would take the head off and clean and hone the cylinders.
Matt I use ATF or Marvel and laquer thinner mixed. This thins the ATF/Marvel and allows it to penetrate better in my experience. The better penetration softens the crud and will do less damage to rhe rings. It needs at least 24 hours to soak and sometimes more than once. Just some more information that may help. I appreciate all that you guys do to resurrect what you find.
Matt - that marvel mystery oil really needs to soak for a few days -this also helps with badly needed lubrication when it does crank over . Started my ‘30 Model A after sitting 34 years in about 30 minutes. Of course I had poured a generous amount of oil in each cylinder and turned it over SLOWLY with the plugs out when stored. And when preparing to start it I had added the Marvel Mystery oil about 4 days ahead. Gas tank was shiny clean so poured in a couple cups of fuel and it started right up and even idled smoothly. The carb float stuck soon after, so I swapped in another carb until I could clean up the other one.
Love that truck! Get it running, mount the bed and skin the roof and that's it. Don't mess with perfection. I dragged a 30 A RPU out of a garage in NY and it will be staying as found after it is running and driving.
Matt,,,, you need to use a hose to get oil in the cyl.on most flatheads, the spark plugs are above the valves not the cyl. Glad to see it turning over as i write this. Cheers
I love everything about the old '28 truck, the stance, wheels, tires, fenders and cab. I'd say make it an ITG fleet truck with bed. Find someone like Lance and Wyatt in the old Turning Rust now Restored channel that can paint the ITG logo on the doors, but distressed so it looks like it's 90+ old. Can't wait for the next episode Matt and Mike.👍👀
Hey Matt , good job on getting the engine unstuck. Hopefully It'll be a running truck soon. As far as what to do with I'd leave it stock. Its way to clean to mess with.
Congrats on getting the engine broke free. You definitely need to build it, either make it your shop truck or give to Mike or pass along to someone else, it would be a cool project truck.
We use to find these guy locked up in the 60's. Best way we found without snapping the rings was to pull the plugs and put a couple of ounces of ATF in each cylinder and let it set for three days. 👍
Your luck is amazing! This is too special to let go. As much as I like The Meat Truck I like this way more and is much more in line with your stable. Keep it, add a flatbed with some low wooden slat sides and your logo. Becoming a legend in hot rodding. At 73 I've seen a thing or two.
Find or make an original bed. Put an old school wrecker boom set up in the bed. I like the magnetic sign idea from another viewer. Get it running and drive the wheels off it. Thank you IronTrap Garage. Love your channel. Keep up the good work.
I love it, she’s a keeper for sure. I think you should restore it to her glory. I know you already have 999 projects going now but just park it on side till your freed up on cars
the driver door on that cab sounds better when you shut it than on my 1994 f150. i can't believe it is in such good shape for being almost a hundred years old. what an awesome find.
Love the truck! Remember Matt it's basically a tractor. It will run. I like the idea of putting a pick up bed on it. It would be the perfect ITG shop truck.
It's great to see the engine move, even it's just a little bit, but it's a good start 👍 I can't help my self, but i like those guide headlights way better on that Truck. That AA has a bright future as the new ITG-shop truck... I can feel it 🤣🤣
Not sure if anyone mentioned in the comments but I’ve had good luck on the cylinders that have valves closed if I use compressed air and blow all the junk out of cylinders then pressurize the cylinders after the mystery oil. Helps push the oil around the rings an frees up faster. Awesome truck find. Keep up the great work!
The only thing that would make that truck any cooler, would be the high back window. It’s pretty neat how complete it is. like you were saying, the express bed is cool looking.
You want to use "ALL YOUR BACK" when pushing or lifting your truck! I had to remove the head and Hammer on number 3 piston with a block of wood and replace 4 valves! took an act of God to remove the head! I was just going to pull the whole works out and replace it with my 1955 265 SBC but now I'm enjoying driving it around all raggedy in a controlled state of decay as a survivor!
Hey Matt ,just a thought and it does work . Heat up your oil just as hot as it would be if it was running . My Grandfather passed a long time ago ,but he passed on info to my dad . Granddad was The Top Mechanic in W.Tn. 1933. He won that award from Snap-On Tools with a toolbox full of Snap On tools . He says that the engine was most likely hot last time it turned over , plus it can't hurt.
Nice find! As for a use for the truck, I have always believed in using vehicles for there original purpose. And no vehicles where made to sit under a cover or in a garage. I like your idea of using it as a short range delivery truck or part chaser. Put the original bed back on it with a nice but not super clean wood flor and use it! Thanks for the video!
I had a stuck engine that marvel mystery oil wouldn’t free up, so I bought a gallon of pb blaster, it freed it up and even got the rings unstuck, it really ate up the rust in between the rings
Spent lotsa time unsticking engines so I will throw out some stuff that's worked for me. Use Marvel or ATF like you did then put a jack under the crank handle and partially raise the front of the vehicle. (some might even raise the wheels off the ground) Walk away and just take a gander every day to see if the wheels are lower. (might take a week, but only 4 days in your case) What you have now is carbon build up on top of the pistons which doesn't allow you to go beyond TDC. An old trick is to put the pistons mid way and flush the cyls with some kerosene. At that point fit a few inches of brake line to an air nozzle (enough to reach the piston) and blast the carbon with shop air in a circular motion while holding a towel lightly over the plug hole. All of the junk will fly out the plug hole. You might have to repeat the process or let it soak over night but you will get enough crap out to finally turn it over.
I am 58 and have done this a time or two with no problems works great. also run air down the cyl. with a made up spark plug that has closed valves this will push the marvel thru even faster
This is what we did years ago on an old morris 8. We were doing a valve job on it. You take the head off clean up the surfaces and lay the head gasket down on something flat and clean it off. Then spray paint the gasket with silver galvanising paint both sides. 2 coats. Then refit it as normal. The galv paint fills any small imperfections and seals it up. It works. Give it a try. Its not as though is 22:1 compression like a diesel. What have you got to loose. I can of paint,1 hour, a can of brakleen and half a sheet of sand paper and you get to run the dingle ball hone through the cylinders and wire brush the valves so its all nice and clean.
with sidevalve engines that have been sitting a long time, theyre more prone to lock up.Always remove to cylinder head for a look.More damage can be done by forcing it to turn over when things are rusty inside. Its a quick job lifting the cylinder head.Love your show, ceers Graeme in New Zealand.
I love it when people crank cold motors over to make sure they don’t stick. “Thanks for scraping any residual oil off the cylinders and valve stems!” Then we wonder why they stick after temp cycles.
When put mystery oil also ATF squirted should say go my motor slimed Lol and very good got motor unstuck to turn almost in fire order too! Keep working on motor plus old Model A A truck and you have running next videos too!
My great uncle was a marvel mystery oil salesmen back in the fifty’s. It’s amazing that after all these years and throughout the hundreds of car trends everyone still knows marvel is still the best! .....and it’s still a mystery of what it really is?🤔😂
Love this show!!! My 2 cents...skip the expensive, fancy oil. Go straight to ATF!!! Let it soak and just work it over a few days. This old truck will clean up nice!!! The oil will act like a solvent. Good Job!!!
As cool as a vintage tow truck would be, I think bringing it back as a flatbed shop truck would be cool. A little patina, faded logo on the door, ya know? I'm still very active in the Model A Club and we have gotten many running that were in that shape or worse. They're tough. Surprises us how bad they can be and come back to life. MMO & ATF all good. Acetone & ATF good too. Best of luck.
Hello Matt, This original AA truck is in great condition at 92 years old! It can only be original once. My vote is to only replace the parts like wiring, hoses, etc. to make it safe and mechanically reliable. You may want to install a modern gas filter in line before the carburetor. Those steel gas tanks can develop rust issues as the inside plating is worn away over time. Then, the engine will not run well. Thank you.
Aerokroil the crap out of it. Into the cylinders, and down the carb or intake manifold. Let it sit for a week, just keep spraying it in there. This worked on my flathead that hadn't been touched for 28 years after being left outside.
That’s similar cab to my truck my truck is a 1930s mechanicals I was recently told and I know the cab on mine is a 29. I was told mines a cross body can’t wait to finish my nut bolt on mine. It’s also a one ton. Job well done on this truck. Yours must have fenders because it had a standard most likely chain bed. Mine doesn’t have fenders in rear cause it’s a stake bed
HI MATT, I'M NEW TO YOUR CHANNEL AND I LIKE THAT 1928 FORD MODEL AA P/U. I BELIEVE THAT WHEN YOU GET DONE WORKING ON IT AND DECIDE TO WASH IT TO PLEASE PUT CLEAR COAT ON IT AND SAVE THE PATINA. THAT WOULD MAKE A GREAT DAILY DRIVER.
You can get them borescopes cameras that work with your phone. They are super inexpensive on eBay I got one for like seven or eight bucks with lights on it.
100% correct
I'm 72 too, my dad was exactly like yours. Was employed at Willies Motors. My dad used Liquid Wrench to loosen pistons. I just disassembled the engine.
I'm 42 and was going to say the same thing never crank over a dry engine if it stuck I have broke many engines free with ATF or Marvel mystery oil not to many flatheads but lot's of overhead valve engines
Thanks for this Marvel or ATF tip
Can't understand the thought process to completely fill up the cylinders with oil. I would have just put in enough to cover the top of the pistons to soak it down into the rings. 2 ounces at most.

We
Clean it up, leave it as is..put your name on it and use it as a parts runner..Coolest truck in town !! Great find absolutely love it
Absolutely Agree,
I totally agree to that! It's so unique, can you afford to keep it. You should bild it to your own special chopping truck..👍😊
This is so cool on so many levels. I would even consider building a box and utilizing those epic fenders on the rear!!
It works on hardware store paint, not on modern uerathanes.
I really enjoy your channel and the information you pass on to the younger people about the cars you work on.
There are AA trucks like this still in every day use in south America. Not for fun but for real work. Love this truck.
Matt I think it would make a great shop truck. It would be cool to be able to use it to haul one of your other cars to car shows at your local events. The more I see the truck on the channel the more I think you should keep the old girl to play with.
Matt you've got to make an original period correct wrecker out of the truck with your logo on the sides...
Totally concur with Mr Dean, this would make a great old lookin "Waltons Ford 1929 Model AA"
That was painful to watch. Mystery oil is supposed to sit 24 hours and it takes all the work out of freeing up a stuck engine without breaking any parts. Wow...
Who needs to go to the gym when you have a stuck motor! Love the truck, can't wait to see it running again.
Hey Matt, Mike
We all know you are going to sell it !
It's just a matter of how soon.
It is currently a new toy to play with, but you do have other toys that need your attention.
It would be fun to play with just to be able to drive an original stock 28/29 model A.

Put the head back on.
Make a new fuel line which we can see is missing.

The Metalic snap you heard may have been a ring breaking, a stuck valve poping closed or the starter bendex snaping back as it may have been stuck to the flywheel from a previous atempt to start it.
Good luck with it and thank you for letting us almost be there for the fun.
Live Long,
Be Safe and Well
Thank you for the update on the 1928 Ford Model AA Truck ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you guys maybe doing next ! Doing well here in Kansas .
Love the truck. Definitely pull the head and tidy up the cylinders and valves. Can’t wait to see what you do next to the old girl!
Thank you for the great videos and showing the world your passion for vintage cars. I hope you bring this beauty back fast. I can't wait see more videos on this truck

I'd love that truck . I'd keep it as is for a fun drive on weekends.
Is there a follow up video to this?
That truck is totally restorable. Keep it as original as possible. Clean it, paint it and drive it as an original. It is really awesome. I envy you on this one. I dream of one day finding something like that.
Clean it, DONT paint it and drive it.
Matt,
As allways I appreciate the time you put into your videos. I can see this as a Irontrap Shop truck.
I stumbled across this video and its predecessor over the weekend, but when I scroll through the videos I don't see any further mention of this truck. Did it get sold off after this video? Or did I just miss any further updates?
I love your show !!! Old school thinking and technology. Yes, rebuild the ruck and take it to your swapmeets and car shows.
That’s sick man. It’s such a great moment when you finally break it free. We’ve been fighting one flat head for a while now and we are refusing to give up!
Aerokroil works great. I had my flathead soaking in it for 2 weeks, it did the trick.
Ok and this is why I love this channel so much
Mike said there's fluid going everywhere
And Matt's only reply is o well just throw a rag over it
So they can act like they don't even see and just go right back to doing what they're doing
LOL great times for this channel
Start by keeping it and putting a magnetic Iron trap garage sign on it. From there, it at least has a new home.
Matt - that marvel mystery oil really needs to soak for a few days -this also helps with badly needed lubrication when it does crank over . Love that truck! Get it running, mount the bed and skin the roof and that's it. Don't mess with perfection. I dragged a 30 A RPU out of a garage in NY and it will be staying as found after it is running and driving.
Matt, I think are very lucky This Old Truck looks like a great find. Love watching the video
I could just imagine that feeling he felt the moment he realized he finally broke it free😎
I like the idea of making it a wrecker. You could actually use it around irontrap to move vehicles around.
Congrats on getting the engine broke free. You definitely need to build it, either make it your shop truck or give to Mike or pass along to someone else, it would be a cool project truck.
Matt, great job on the red car, I hope you drive it. Following along on the new truck.
You better love this truck it deserves it. If I had enough money to buy it I would in a heart beat.
It would take less time to just pull it apart and go through it.
No fun in that
Good point.
This is one of my favorite videos that you have made! Short term gratification truck rescue! Make it into a wrecker!
We use to find these guy locked up in the 60's. Best way we found without snapping the rings was to pull the plugs and put a couple of ounces of ATF in each cylinder and let it set for three days. 👍

this great iam, 81 old and live in Idaho by the snake river on a old farm i wish i could go out there to see some of thie this iswondeful thanks
Yeah that's gotta be restored with sympathy, it's so clean for a 90 year old truck it would be an absolute crime to modify it 👍
As Matt rocks the truck back and forth behind the truck and the engine pops free, running Matt over. LOL! Really cool truck.
I would love this truck. Loving early ford truck and seeing them go is awesome. But not having much saved something like this is beyond my expense
I love it, she’s a keeper for sure. I think you should restore it to her glory. I know you already have 999 projects going now but just park it on side till your freed up on cars

Best way to start a Sunday @ 0600 With an ITG video! Wish I would of had your kinda luck with my 32 BB. But that thing is sweet awesome find.
*That's a real beauty, hope it gets preserved*
If preserved means "unrestored" then I hope so too.
You want to use "ALL YOUR BACK" when pushing or lifting your truck! I got a 5 window 28. Model A looks just like this. Runs and registered.
with sidevalve engines that have been sitting a long time, theyre more prone to lock up.Always remove to cylinder head for a look.More damage can be done by forcing it to turn over when things are rusty inside. Its a quick job lifting the cylinder head.Love your show, ceers Graeme in New Zealand.
I know you have plenty of cars but this truck is a keeper, get it going put a bed on the back and some old school sign writing. Love your vids. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I love it when people crank cold motors over to make sure they don’t stick. “Thanks for scraping any residual oil off the cylinders and valve stems!” Then we wonder why they stick after temp cycles.
Get it running and KEEP IT !!!!!!!!!!!
When put mystery oil also ATF squirted should say go my motor slimed Lol and very good got motor unstuck to turn almost in fire order too! Keep working on motor plus old Model A A truck and you have running next videos too!
You should keep this truck its in too good of shape to sale ,,looks awesome
I looked up the Model AA Express, they are very cool. You could fabricate the bed and have a real nice truck.
Cool truck.
Sounded like a ring snapping.
That is a nice truck. A tow truck would look great.
Restore that truck!
yeah this thing deserves it.
At 8:04 does it look like the fan took a swipe at the radiator? Fan assembly have bearings that might be worn and wobbly?
I like the truck a lot. I hope you do a full series on it.
Such a Great Barn Find. You Lucky DAWG!!
Man I've been watching you since way back, wanna come work for you, love this stuff, you da man!
This truck is a keeper.
Good Job!!!
And mix it 50/50 with acetone to get the best release agent...
Good job good work and you are a very good person on the 34 Skelly. I give that car a nickname called the red sled hope you don't mind sir
The ultimate parts runner!!
I think you should build a box for it since you have the cool rear fenders for it .I think it would make a cool looking pick em up truck
Can't wait for the "smoke show" ?
Awesome video.
I've had a 32 & A 34 ! Great old trucks, being 6'2 & 245 lbs at that time, there tight ! 😂
Hello Matt,
This original AA truck is in great condition at 92 years old!
Thank you.
Hi Matt, I don’t want to see anything get in the way of the 33 Ford blown coupe so get rid of it and don’t get distracted 😁

She's definitely calling for Mike to take care of her
I am waiting to see how you do. I have a 48 Chevy pickup that has a similar issue. I used to turn it over by the fan belt. Now it's frozen.
Aerokroil the crap out of it. Into the cylinders, and down the carb or intake manifold. Let it sit for a week, just keep spraying it in there. This worked on my flathead that hadn't been touched for 28 years after being left outside.
@@markk3652 Thanks Mark! I'll try what you suggest.
Love this one. What became of the truck? Is it a awesome shop truck? Pleas update the story..
This is fun to watch just seeing you do the old truck yoga! LOL
Find a huge wooden barrel and put it on. I think the Iron Trap needs an Iron Tap. You might know a guy that has some cool beer stuff to add to it.
How much $?
You can get them borescopes cameras that work with your phone. They are super inexpensive on eBay I got one for like seven or eight bucks with lights on it.
