    You guys strayed from the question, SAR teams are looking for help building their program among SAR members. Your rant on non SAR folks jumping in a search is correct, but that answer is the same for any volunteers try to help without proper training. I’m member of K9 SAR team , with part 107, and I’m standing up a drone program for our team. Drones are another tool in our resource bag, but not always useful (weather, canopy etc).

    We watched the video until 7:54 and discontinued you did not address the topic How to train a pilot at all. All that was observed was a rant of how qualified you are, suggestion stick to the subject at hand to assist others if that is you goal in mind.

  • @JaimeAndresMedia

    9:12 makes complete sense! I get that you want someone qualified and knowledgeable, but in an emergency when seconds count, I rather have some capability from a “random drone pilot” than to have NO capability because I need proof of his qualifications

      Stefan Merz I would disagree. People who don’t know what they’re doing can get in the way, get lost or injured themselves, and can unintentionally destroy evidence 😐

      @@SkyFireDrone2022 destroy evidence of what ??? But hey either way everyone is entitled to their opinion but I don't know I think if you had somebody missing you would want as much help as possible and it doesn't really take that much training to fly a drone to look for somebody "systematically" like they keep stressing like flying a drone is rocket science or something lol I understand using programs and learning how to mapand shooting cinematically and all that takes lots of practice yes but the search for somebody with a drone I mean

    This was my first view of the channel. When I saw the description I was excited but within the first 5 minutes, I was totally unimpressed. Many of us want to get involved in SAR and are very capable pilots who are looking for education and training in assisting with SAR missions! You basically did nothing but flaunt your arrogance. I'm out and will not be back

    Paul is 100% correct. Education of everyone is key, but it has the same problem as educating everyone about drone rules and safety. Time, resources, budgets, etc.
    However, as Rob said, if there are no other resources, and the parent does not know any better, such as searching in patterns, then a random drone pilot is a resource, and even if it is only a set of eyes in the sky, and no pictures or video are taken, It allows for possible spotting the subject or movement that may not be able to be seen from ground. If other resources, SAR team, manned flight, he’ll, or a training SAR drone.pilot show up the random pilot can cease flight.

    I watched this video to see if I could find any additional information that we could use within our team and instead what I found was this Paul guy on the right has an ego, has proven that he doesn’t know as much about SAR as he thinks he does, and is opinionated.
    These are huge red flags in the SAR community and is a definite turn off to watching anything that Drone U may offer.
    If you think you are the smartest person in the room then you have probably already proven that you are not.
    I feel I’m qualified to make the following statements as I have 25 years experience, primarily in Wilderness searches and am a qualified search manager. Paul could possibly be a detriment to a search and should check his attitude and altitude. People do survive longer than 24 hours when missing. Many of our searches are 48 to 72 hours and usually result in a live find. There are other cases where experienced people have survived much longer times. I always preach that if you can tell me the missing person wouldn’t be in a certain spot than show me where they are because you must know.
    Good searchers look at all possibilities, don’t bring egos to the search, are open minded, and train for the mission.
    Since starting to get our new drone program off the ground I have found that you can’t get any kind of drone training class put on for less than $7500. Everyone is in this to make money and no one has been able to give me specific patterns or tactics for SAR so I would be hesitant to pay that for a class if we could afford it because of the lack of impression.
    A drone is a tool in a overhead teams toolbox, the same as ground searchers, K9’s, mounted patrol, air ops, etc. You use what is available to you immediately, you ask for additional resources to come in (if you don’t ask, you’ll never get them) and you track and record the actions. If I need to take a Phillips Head screw out of something I prefer to use a Phillips head screwdriver not a slotted. Put me in an emergency situation where someone’s life is on the line and I’ll use a butter knife if that’s all I can get my hands on.
    Using Probability of detection is one way and even then the percentage assigned is given by the search resource. You will not get 100% POD from any resource. Multiple searches on an area are needed to do that and even then there is still a percentage of error.
    Very disappointing statements from a site that looked to be well versed in drone operations.

    I found my delirious uncle who is missing for a day and the police were not ready to send out a search party… So I took the sky and found his car on the last 30% of the last battery … But I suppose based off of your CODE I should’ve just sat there and waited and waited?
    I clicked this video because I was interested In doing it the right way but if that’s all I’m gonna deal with is snobs like that I don’t want to be part of it. You definitely got your knowledge and I respect that but you can’t rag on people who want to do good and willing to use their own equipment for a greater good

  • @pwidmayer
    @pwidmayer 5 років тому

    Paul I completely see your point. Yes any help is always good. But you should have experience and/or training. Agencies should not incorporate drones into their tool box until they have trained operators on board. It is similar to a fire company deploying a drone at a fire without experience and using it for scene oversight but the pilot doesn't know what he is looking at. NIMS and ISC classes are free and available to all US residents.

    This was seriously a bad first impression to seeing this channel. I was curious about maybe getting into drone piloting to later join a SAR team but this was a severely discouraging rant. Last I checked SAR teams are voluntary and they need all the volunteers they can get because people aren't volunteering for things like they used to. The guy on the right has a super overblown ego and childlike behavior calling non-military drone search missions "sorties" to puff himself up and prevent people from assisting on "his" site. The talk goes nowhere near the topic headline of "How to Train a Pilot to Fly a Successful Mission" and instead rants on about foundational SAR trainings that will be applied to any volunteer and not specifically drone pilots. This is just some crappy plug for his training site, wrapped in a mask of fear mongering.
    Also, his apology about "not beating people up with his knowledge" later in the video rings hollow and comes way too late for any redeeming qualities to be seen as he still clearly struggles with letting a less or unexperienced drone pilot fly even when the person would be the only option. His rejection of using thermal imaging "after 24 hours" is disgusting and fatalist in mentality. Even if there is a remote chance and it's available, it should be used. I would never want to be on a SAR site with this guy or be as far as I could be from him. Just sad.

      100%. I was excited to find the channel and this specific video at first, and that excitement quickly died, and was replaced with a very negative impression. "Not flying on MY search and rescue mission, that's for damn sure", yeah ok bub. I better go take off and land a bunch, I mean, I better go fly some sorties to get on his level.

    I’ve been teaching public safety diving for over 30 years while being a police office for 42 years and.being the CO of the dive team for those 30 years. When you do a search for a drowning victim, the systematic search is a complete necessity and when you are finished, either you can say we found the victim, OR he is definitely not in this area. And we are looking in water in our area where there is either very little visibility or you can see the glass on the inside of your mask. The comparisons to drone use go on and on!

    Hi Guys
    You have very valid point!!
    But you must understand that many SAR would be from Volunteer Fire Departments. But training training training is essential. Many SAR is rural so the local services will covering the operation.

    • @coldwartelevision1198
      @coldwartelevision1198 5 років тому

      Also it is hard enough to get enough volunteers for the fire departments. If you would have that many requirements for a SAR pilot ,you would not have many pilots. What your not considering is that time is crucial!!!! I would launch a mission with less experience pilots, and maybe find the the person. My city doesn’t have the budget to hire a SAR Team. DJI should Have. A training program in California to help train pilots.

    If someone has the equipment & is able to help find a lost person, they should. Heres a little tidbit regarding drones my friends. Drones fly level & straight-out, they stay at height regardless of distance flown. There's no angle changes had. There's no rise, no dip, drop or anything else. Drones stay & fly at starting height regardless distance flown. If you force the drone to adjust & correct for claimed globe curvature, it crashes. It crashes no matter how far you extend the distance flown to correct & adjust for claims of physical globe curvature. This is the same for all aircraft. Have a very good day my friend & friends. Be Well & God Bless

  • @robertlane6675

    I don't think the guy on the right is taking into account small towns and small SAR groups. Every SAR group works differently and has different capabilities. Helicopters are not generally available on day one of a search where I am. I agree with effective search patterns, NIMS and reviewing photos but I think he could have presented it in a way to encourage potential SAR members like myself to become a great pilot. I watched this video because I want to become a pilot on my team but it was discouraging.

    Might SAR involve the Civil Air Patrol (and possibly ONLY involve the CAP)? These guys are trained extensively and what you might lose in time (by waiting for the CAP to assemble a team which will likely include a drone pilot in certain circumstances), you will make up in efficiency and other benefits by using an agency that has been involved in 90+% of SAR since WWII.

    No use using thermo after 24 hrs?? Wrong, We have had lost ppl beyond that time period and thermo could of found them. Wrong advise. In our S&R organization we are in the beginning stages of learning to utilize drones in our missions, we are learning as we go, listening to Paul we shouldn't even try?. My understanding is S&R organizations all use the ICS system and will know how that works and since we are not alone on missions just be cause a drone pilot does not have a I- 800 they shouldn't fly? Seems arrogant me.

  • @BobPalmer25
    @BobPalmer25 5 місяців тому

    This is my first time seeing the podcast. Paul, you come across very arrogant. You seemed to have a lot of knowledge on the topic but IMO did not answer the question. How does a 107 pilot train to become a SAR pilot? How does a person get the 100-200 hrs of training you mentioned?

  • @george_speaks
    @george_speaks 16 днів тому

    Lol.. After 24 hours, no need for thermal?. Do you really do drone SAR? Really, for how many years? You look pretty young (in this vid). You are definitely not doing SAR in the Oregon wilderness. This is an old video so hopefully your holier-than-thou attitude has been put in check. Even a SEAL goes on their first mission. So I don't think a properly trained drone pilot needs hundreds of "sorties" before adding value to a search effort.

  • @evocati6523

    LOL no volunteer SAR team has the luxury of turning away even a decent drone pilot because they don't have some 800 level cert or whatever. A good SAR team will find a way they can help, if you can't then YOU need more training, not them. YOU are supposed to be good at command and control, not the volunteers

    You made a few "decent" points but go WAY overboard, don't answer the dude's question, and then sloppily promote your own course. At the end of the day, an average pilot with a 107 (understanding airspace etiquette, basic safety procedures, and reasonable communication with those involved) can take a modern drone and go fly with VERY little risk of endangering people or property. Your claim they will kill someone is so ridiculous. Had they not flown and attempted to find the lost person then the chances of locating the individual via drone is ZERO. I am by no means saying pilots shouldn't seek training and hone their skill, but I'd highly encourage anyone watching this video to seek guidance on this sub topic elsewhere...
