    The Rhodesian Ridgeback was a dog breed developed in Southern Africa region. Its ancestors can be traced to the ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi people, these were crossed with European dogs by the early colonists of Southern Africa.
    In the late 19th Century, big-game hunter Cornelius van Rooyen from Rhodesia incorporated two ridged Greyhound-like females into his pack of lion dogs. He found that their ridged offspring excelled at confronting and confounding the king of beasts, giving the hunter time to sight in his rifle and dispatch his prey. These ridged dogs were also successful at fending off other dangerous animals such as leopards and baboons, trotting effortlessly alongside horse-mounted riders all day, breaking off to course quick-footed game such as antelope to provide meat for the pot, and protecting the homestead from all intruders. They were known then, as they are today, for their devotion to family, and tolerance and affection for its children.

    My family had a good girl like this. She was 12 when she had to be put out because of cancer.
    Even in her old age and with the pain she NEVER snapped at us. She was very protective and didn't like people she didn't know but once we properly introduced someone she was super sweat. My parents had her before I was born. I was 9 when she died, 2 weeks after my gran passed. I miss my good girl every day.

      My family had a boy, he had a some pitbull in him, and he had the ridge/Mohawk on his neck and upper back instead of mid to lower back. He unfortunately had to be put down because he had some sort of growth causing them to have episodes of dementia and forget who we were. Also when I was 9 or 10. He lived to 9 or 10. His name was majik. His death seemed to set off a chain reaction of death in my family, including family members and pets. It was also the beginning of the end for my childhood.

    My RR lived to be 13.5 years, the most wonderful dog imaginable. But.. they're a handful, its a hands-on breed and you need to show who's boss. Great with children, trustworthy. Again though, strong characters and full on dogs, they don't want to be treated as a play thing, they know their role and want to be left to perform that role. I'll be getting another soon.

    We had a mutt come on property a few years ago. He was the most athletically built dog I'd ever seen. He can jump up to 6+ feet and sometimes just jumps while running around. I looked into the Rhodesian Ridgeback because I was curious about the Rhodesian Bush War.
    I reckon our dog (Freckles) is atleast half Rhodesian Ridgeback, and he's a great farm dog but he's only semi-decent at herding cattle. Here in Oklahoma, we have hot and humid summers especially in the south-east and that light coat is perfect for the weather here.
    This is a great farm dog but make sure to train them to not attack the weaker, smaller farm animals like rabbits and ducks.

      Good luck and congratulations!! I have 2 females. My first one is 2.5 years old and i got her from a breeder. My 2nd girl is 1.5 years old and I got her at 5.5 months from Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue. I love them to death. They are the best dogs imaginable. My rescue girl is so attached to me and super protective of everyone in the house. But, once we are good with people, they are. We have had occasions where we have had 20-30 people in our backyard with small children and everything and they were great. They are greedy food mongers, but that's about it...lol

    I think Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the most wonderful breed there is. One thing you must watch however is they will eat almost anything (and are notorious counter surfers). In this video I noticed a knotted rope toy. Please be careful with these toys. After an unidentified mass was discovered in our 10 year old female Rhodesian we had to take her to a veterinary surgical center for exploratory surgery. The doctors found a 5lb ball in her stomach consisting of mostly individual strings from her favorite toy, a knotted rope. The ball also included, socks, underwear and scrunchies. Without the surgery she would have died, so we were thankful the vet had recommended the surgery. Since that time rope toys have been banned from our dogs toy box. Throw them out.

    • @GeorgeParros161

      What makes the Rhodesian Ridgeback such an effective hunter is it's brain over it's considerable brawn. They have pitbull like muscle (not bully unathletic) but rather a body likened unto the old game bred pitbulls and their bodies are so very sound. And the endurance of this breed is amazing. On the tracking trail even the Malinois have to pop open a can of spinach to see it through, and the pitbull has the heart, just doesn't have the legs for it.

      @@RHP9898 I hear your point. Shepherds are smarter at doing things such as police work surveillance and other things like that, absolutely. However I think shepherds lack the intelligence that is required to hunt lions or other dangerous game. That's not their skill set. I have seen a Rhodesian at work getting after a black bear and sending it running. And I have watched a Shutzhund titled German Shepherd dog struggle with running off a raccoon. Two very differently wired brains and that is why both dogs have different jobs. Use the right dog and the right tool for the job.

      @@jameshughes131 I'm with you. However, is the Ridgeback better at criminal apprehension than the German Shepherd? Don't misunderstand my question. I prefer the Ridgeback as a family, and bush dog over the GSD. However, the GSD didn't become as popular for police, and security work as it has been for the last 60+ years for no reason. Again the Ridgeback is my favorite but it is great at many things but not the best at everything.

    I miss mine had to give him up. Trained extremely well and smart one extreme negative if you have a family make sure he or she has been raised with your children. They are obsessive and extremely possessive. Not for a novice owner at all. Powerful in every way. I was a novice owner only having 2 dogs and I was in my early 20s... But I trained and walked him every day socialized him he knew over 15 commands and could speak and say I love you in bark. But when I had my 1st child he became something I've never seen before so becareful as all dogs aren't the same and they say it's bad owners not bad dogs. This was not the case at all he wasn't use to having a family environment so it was better for him to go with someone who didn't have children because that's what he was use to. Fast and powerful and my wife and I miss him everyday. 🤙

    I had a ridgeback. Wonderful girl. She was unsocialized with people so she had some aggression toward most humans, she did not bite them but she growled a lot. She was a devoted companion and protector for me and my other sweet greyhound. My rigeback was a total pussy cat to my greyhound who basically repremanded her if she got too strong willed while playing. My greyhound would steal Ridgebacks bone from her mouth with no consequence, but I dont recommend any dog try that with a Ridgeback of their own. Mine was just a doll but a strong funny push girl when left to her own devices. I would only recommend a ridgeback to someone who is an experienced large dog owner. They need good training and wise guidance. & Lots of love. They love to sleep on the bed with you!

Nowadays no, he grew out of his teenage phase. He is extremely focused on me though so at home there is no issue with calling, because the RR NEEDS to please you. But needs reassurance too - they are very very sensitive. He also has a mind of his own and needs regiments. When walking there is a chance he does not listen. It’s like a switch in their brain. RR all have different quirks, mine wheeps like a baby when he feels left out and he hates water. And he’s a lapdog 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it’s fine, he’s an excellent guard dog so I let that pass....😅 because of the sheer size and mass you need to go train him properly with the leash!

      Got two RR and have four children. Rule one with any breed of dog is to remember they are dogs and they interact with the world with their teeth and claws, RR more so.
      RR love mouthing/chewing new people and things. Train the distraction method of giving them a chew bone when new people arrive at your house and keep it going for life.
      Train your children to continually

    • @laleluilu
      @laleluilu 4 роки тому

      Yeah, they have claws alright. While other dogs have paws, my RR boy has 4 full claws and he doesn't know it. As for independent: to be happy they NEED you, they are tremendously focused on their person... until my RR is distracted while being on a walk. Then he will 8/10 not recall and only comes back when he has lost interest. I heard this a lot of times with the breed. So independent and stubbornness go hand in hand,. As for difficult to train - i'd say normal amount, he needed constant training when young. Mine is 4 now and fully obedient to me (only me and this does not include distractions haha). They have quirks for sure and the breed specs are more marketing than anything else (being independent sounds positive, but it is meant as a caution). My RR does not want to play with my toddler and I'm glad about it. I also commented on the child question a couple replies up. The breed plays rough with dogs, with children is no exception as it is in their nature. My child needs to grow in size for them to become companions.

    • @drispyify
      @drispyify 4 роки тому +2

      @@heylisten5329 To an extent, as I have two they mouth and nip in their rough play with each other. My two have not nipped anyone, however they do have a tendency to push the rules so you need to be firm and consistent with them, they thrive in routines and consistency at home. Sadly, I have seen a RR who has been handled incorrectly. It takes a lot of kindness for them to trust people again, even to the extent of not eating training treats - which for a dog is an exceptional behaviour.

      I have a human toddler and a 4 yo RR wuzz lol I’d say for them to be partners our child has to grow a bit older. The Ridgebacks play rough. I think @ markingourterritory on Instagram has a different experience (toddler and baby) - great channel btw on UA-cam as well! Very informative on RR in your every day life)

    • @fatkiefbowls

      any dog is fine around kids if you can teach your kids not to be rough, and if the dog is trained well from the beginning

    • @laleluilu
      @laleluilu 4 роки тому +1

      FatKiefBowls yes, if you mean them being around each other. A toddler and a lying down dog is no problem. However, playtime is differently! Especially Ridgebacks play so roughly that most other breeds get irritated by that! it’s in their nature and if you want to have your child play with the Ridgeback and his toys - the child needs to be older! Otherwise you are always calling your Ridgeback to stop and be gentle, and honestly that’s also not nice for the dog as it’s not his playing nature. He will lose interest in playing like that real quickly. Speaking from experience.
