A very interesting system. I was going to ask about falling asleep while using the system and you pretty much covered what happens with your eyes being off the road for too long. I hope you do get a chance to investigate the system more and trying to simulate a person falling asleep.

I just got the Blue Cruise software update and came across your video. I was using Lane Assist and Adaptive Cruise when I first purchased my truck and something weird happened. I was driving on a highway on a sunny day when I went under a flyover that was casting a shadow diagonally across my lane. The Ford took a pretty hard steering correction that I'm sure would have taken me out of my lane if I did not have my hands on the steering wheel. I do not believe the brakes were applied. It was somewhat startling, but that has not happened since. Maybe it got confused between the shadow and the lane markers. I had dotted lines on either side of me. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I have a 2022 Lariat and love it. As far as ANY hands free on ANY vehicle....I implore you...stay aware, alert and hands in a ready position at ALL times. Regardless of the vehicle or system a few things will never change. Machines / computers will fail and those around you aren't paying attention and/or are aholes. 30 years as a paramedic...it takes a second for you, your vehicle or the ars on the road to change your life. Reactions to survive comes down literally to seconds. With your hands off the wheel sipping a Grande Mocha Latte Frappuccino and enjoying the scenery....the next thing you'll remember...if you're lucky is getting extricated from your car / truck. These systems cannot or will not ever be able to override stupidity, laziness, road rage, drivers dozed off or DUI's.

I think saying “hands free” is 100% correct. I’ve been using Blue Cruise on mine for about a month and I’m completely hands free, especially on road trips. It takes a second to center in the lane after a turn but nothing exaggerated and definitely not dangerous. I think it just takes some getting used to.

I’ve found that my F150 Lariat Powerboost in hands-free mode definitely excels most in bumper to bumper traffic. I have the same issue with the truck overcompensating at the end of the turn when using the hands-free, it’s pretty dangerous in my opinion. It’s also ridiculously dangerous when driving through areas that the speed limit changes, it will basically brake check the person behind you. Now, I always turn it off, take control, and then reset my speed when I know the speed limit is going to change.
It’s great on long straight highway drives, but I don’t trust it through any long sweeping turns.
Other than those issues, I find the truck to be pretty amazing and the onboard generator is a game changer.

Dan, I was driving back to TX from NM, was on cruise and realized it must have downloaded. Thought it was pretty cool, but it did ping pong a bit. Doesn’t drive as well as I do, but I wanted to let it do it’s thing (cautiously) to see how it did. A couple more things I noticed. Lane has to be clearly marked / painted, and it doesn’t like different tones of pavement, as if you have clear lanes, but patches and corrections with greys and blacks on the road, or a prior lane that was moved a bit, it gets confused.

    • @GearsGadgets

That’s interesting that it’s finding it’s way onto trucks OTA. I totally agree with your assessment that a focused driver is better. It does have its places to shine for sure. I think those long trips, and sitting in bumper to bumper stop and go is where it really has value.

Thanks Dan for another informative video. So, I have a question and a comment. When the F150 reduces speed using adaptive cruise control (as in rush hour traffic) do the brake lights activate; does it alert the driver behind you? Additionally, when the lane centering bounces you from one side of the lane to the other I’m concerned that I will make drivers (especially truckers) behind me, and wanting to pass, nervous. Have you noticed that they give you a wide birth?

    • @m7877
      @m7877 2 роки тому

The brake lights do in fact light up when the cruise control hits the brakes. The lane bouce isn't that bad, I haven't noticed any drivers giving a wide birth. But I keep my hands on the wheel.
I am not the OP btw.

I found that lane-centering while towing (a cargo trailer in my case) was wearying because it tended to "swim" down the road, probably responding to the trailer forces, and the motion it applies to the wheel to make sure your hands are still on makes the feature generally unsatisfactory. Adaptive cruise already takes at least half the hassle out of driving.

This is my '21 truck (in SQ with the mono paint option - no gray accents-)... I LOVE it and the Blue Cruise. It is a LOT better than my wife's Tesla FSD Beta in her Model Y. Trust me. In most cases, the Adaptive Cruise with Centering is fine on most streets and highways and does what it is intended to do. If you do keep your hands on the wheel with Hand's Free, you are going to have more problems than you are solving. It will kick off more often. Absolutely agree with its use in rush hour. It is a sanity saver for sure!
The only thing I do not like is how quick the system is to warn you about your hands or look around or pull out a phone. And it will quickly kick off if you don't play by the rules. Totally agree with Dan on this...
My truck came with this from the dealer, so not sure if I would have optioned it or not (1,500 miles in), but really glad it has it and that it was fully working (vice having to wait for it) when I drove off the lot. I'm a fan.

Interesting man… i own an XLT with adaptive cruise and I love it… with the exception of the hands on steering wheel alert every 15 seconds even when your hand is on the wheel.. it got especially annoying on the 3500 mile round trip I took over this past Christmas… I’ve found ways around it via certain more uncomfortable hand positions,.. honestly debating on using the ankle weight trick if I can find something I’m comfortable with…
Regardless… what I was gonna say about the blue cruise is that I’ve seen videos of trucks equipped and you can see the sensors above the center stack (not sure if they’re in other places as well) that look just like the Face ID cameras on the iPhone…so I guess that’s how it knows if you’re watching the road even with sunglasses on… I would hate this SOOO much more than the hand warning… I mean… how am I supposed to watch that horrible new matrix movie at 2 am while driving through a snowy mountain pass???
