Hey Jim, thank you for allowing us to tour your garden. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You were the star of the show so we didn’t get an opportunity to meet you but luckily we met your wife and she is very lovely. Thank you so much for spreading your knowledge on these videos. Your wisdom of the zone we/you live in have helped and inspired my wife in her gardening journey. Thank you very much and please keep doing what you’re doing, we all appreciate and look forward to it.
Jim - the patio turned out _beautifully_! The most important thing, of course, is that Holly approves, but the humans also appreciate it; looks like it has been there a long time, and goes beautifully with the style of the house and your garden style. What you and Steph have done with the place in the last four years is remarkable. And, since you took the time today to express appreciation for your audience, I wanted to thank you for the great videos. I always learn something from you!
Your words of gratitude are heartfelt❤ For someone that disliked science in school (many moons ago), you have captivated me and turned me into a plant nerd. I've learned soo much from you and Stephany - each week I pick up new information and apply it to my garden. The patio (aka Holly's stage) is the most beautiful one I've seen. Nicely done!! The $500 watermelon had me cracking up 🤣
You know Jim, I've been gardening for 35 years and you have taught me so much. I went to the garage and threw away the "blue fertilizer" that I have been using for years. Thank you for your knowledge and sharing it with us ❤
Thank you for your amazing work. Awesome teaching! Even my husband, who says he doesn't garden 😮 knows who "Putnum" is because your name is almost a daily word around here 😂 thanks for teaching me. My garden reflects that!!
Agreed. I have changed how I reference the videos over time. At this point, I've claimed first-name status for "Jim" when passing on some wisdom from his videos. 😂
Thanks so much for answering my two little questions that I "brought with me" to the Open Garden. My background is in engineering, but learning everything i can about gardening/soil and all the other things that you espouse on your channel has opened up a whole new set of things to learn. Even my millennial sons enjoy watching your UA-cams when I play them when they visit. This is a great compliment. 😊 It was AMAZING to see your garden and you guys in person, and it has inspired me to do even more. ❤
The patio is fabulous! I can see why people wanted to hire you for stone work. Ive been a long time subscriber and would have loved a garden tour but health matters are preventing that right now. Hopefully you will offer another tour some day. Thank you for all you do for us newbie gardeners. I have transformed a clean slate on a new construction into a small piece of paradise for my husbsnd and I...i am very thankful for this space as a serene garden for recovery.
Here's an interesting bit of plant-naming trivia: In Japan, crape myrtles are called 'monkey slide' trees (saru suberi) because the stems are so smooth that monkeys can (theoretically) slide down them! I'm glad we use Latin names to keep everything consistent. I used to be annoyed when an article or person only used the Latin name, but largely thanks to your videos I can now recognize many of them and know their general characteristics. Thanks!! And please do have another open garden sometime if this one went well; I couldn't make it this year.
Beautiful job on the new patio!! It really integrates your garden with its organic shape and how the colors of your landscape are represented within its composition.
The tan stones in your patio almost exactly match the color of Holly’s coat. You color coordinated your patio with your lovely dog. Probably unintentional but so cool!
Thanks so much, Jim and Steph, for opening up your beautiful garden to us yesterday. It’s even more beautiful in person! It was great meeting you both, and Holly. I bought the ladies plant nerd shirt, and love it. Thanks so much for all that you both do for those of us who follow you! You’re the best!
Hi Jim and Steph! I received my Plant Nerd t-shirt yesterday and wanted to let you know how much I love it! Your personal note meant a lot as well. I plan to wear it this Friday when a fellow Plant Nerd and fan of yours comes over for lunch!
It was such a treat to meet you and Steph yesterday! I can't express how truly thankful I am for this channel and all the practical information. Happy to support any way i can!!
I used your method of propagating by bend a stem into a pot of soil and putting a rock on it. I ended up getting about 20 privet shrubs and planted a hedge. Amazing and so easy! This is my go to now! Thanks a lot!! 😀
Being able to tell my daughter - this is the Marvel Mahonia that Jim pruned this week, was tooooo cool yesterday!!! Meeting all of you was such a fantastic experience! Thank you for your generosity in sharing your time, energy and gorgeous garden with all of us! From the South African.
Awesome! Thanks for the first two questions being mine! Will definitely continue to put my containers in the rain, and only use organic fertilizers (espoma).
I believe that I appreciate the language of gardening/naming of plants bc my career was practicing medicine for my career. Always something new to learn! And we often share Latin in our languages…
It was such a treat to meet you, Steph, and Charlie yesterday at your home garden tour! 🤩 My little ones and my husband were very impressed by the number of plants you have in the same sized property that we live on. My 5 year old was so excited to see the weeping redbud and shed "in real life" (she thought your garden was make believe -- like the movies-- until our visit 😂). Interacting with you all was truly the highlight of my weekend, and seeing all of my new plants at a more mature stage in your garden was very encouraging. Thanks again (from the lady with the large floppy black and white hat 😁) for sharing your gardens with so many enthusiastic viewers!! 🙏🏾
The patio turned out beautifully, as did your garden. Amazing progress. Please don’t stop showing this garden. Thank you for contributing to the garden world with this channel!!
It was great to meet you two yesterday. Sorry my kiddo took a dip in the cooler. I was just so shocked by the color of your garden. The camera doesn’t do it justice. I’ve always liked the colors but we were just in shock at how amazingly bright it was. If you open again can it be in winter though? Lol the whole fam asked me to ask you if you’d open again in winter 😂 anyway thank you so much. I’m so glad I got to be there and so thankful. Stephanie it was a regal jumping spider on my shirt, I meant to tell you that’s why we wouldn’t hurt it and Tate wasn’t scared. He loves jumping spiders.
I’ve been following you for a few years. Your backyard is beautiful, organized, layered. The Patio is wonderful mixing materials. Reminds me of a yard I see in UA-cam’s in OKC.
It was so awesome meeting you and Steph yesterday!!! The garden was just amazingly beautiful and larger than life in person! Thank you for all the inspiration and knowledge. I came from Jax, Fl and had an amazing time while in beautiful Raleigh. Was able to nerd out at the Raulston, juniper level, and Duke gardens! Thanks again 😎
Your patio is gorgeous Jim! Thanks for the tip about putting weeds in a bucket instead of in a pile on a path/area to collect later... I think I have been planting weed seeds for a long time. 😂
Q: my plants planted as bare roots, while smaller, seem far more robust compared to plants from nursery pots planted the same time same time; why is this? Plants: ferns, wild ginger Growing zone: 7a Central VA Soil: clay, dry woodland
Thank you for caring about leaving seed heads for the birds and keeping our waterways free from fertilizer runoff. I so appreciate this! The patio looks great!
I came back to TN and we’re also in a heatwave. Should I wait to plant the Butterfly Candy till it cools down a little bit? It made it through the 8 hour car ride so well. It didn’t even wilt. I couldn’t believe it. It’s so funny that I won that because it’s actually the exact one (Lil Grape)that I’ve been looking for since last year. Now my mom is asking me to get her one. Also my niece was there and after seeing your garden and taking maybe a million photos of your hydrangeas, she wants to start growing them. You got her off the cell phone and planning a garden. I think that’s what this channel is all about. You’re instilling the love of horticulture even in the kiddos. I’m so glad to be here.
I am in Zone 8b and have a question regarding watering with a sprinkler. I watched a couple of your watering videos from years past and they were very helpful, but I am hoping that you can discuss whether or not watering a flowerbed with an overhead sprinkler is a good option. My flowerbed is mostly planted with perennials but has a few annuals. Since this flowerbed is large it would be helpful to be able to use a sprinkler and not have to water by hand each time. Some of the plants in this bed include Little Lime Hydrangea, Coral Magic Crapemyrtle, Loropetalum, Miss Molly Butterfly and Pugster Blue butterfly bushes, Muhly grass, Pentas and Shasta Daisies, Sunshine Ligustrum and Emerald Greens. Putting this bed on irrigation is not an option right now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and beautiful garden with us each week.
Jim, Thank you for opening your home for the garden tour. It was truly an inspiration to see such beauty. I very much appreciated your explanation of building up the soil to limit fertilizer use. Seems like a win on so many fronts:) Hope you will do it again. Thank all the caring staff who assisted you as well:)!!
Jim, your garden is lovely. Wish I could go and see it but it's far from Chicago! The person who was asking why you stand when you make a presentation has the manners of a herd of elephants.
Sorry we did not make it to the open garden! But the stone patio looks great and gives your plants around it to really show off ! Holly really likes it !!!
I've pulled a perennial up while I removed an aggressive grass out of my flower bed. I'm glad I kind of quarantined it in a pot because, as I suspected, that grass was entirely growing through the roots. Had I put the plant back in the ground, I would have been right back where I started.
Kentucky coffee tree was our Extension Horticulturalist favorite and I planted a seedling from hers in 2017 which is now 15’ tall. A really nice native in NJ. I collect rain water for watering pots. Or new plants. 🙏🏻🐕❤️
Oh man, I’m stoked to hear more about soil science and organic soil health building, attracting worms as well as water retention and offsetting flooding.
I so enjoyed your beautiful garden tour. Thanks, Steph, for answering my edgeworthia question. Thanks, Jim, for bringing Holly out for a few minutes to meet us. Truly thank you both as I know all the work that goes into having people come tour your garden. I have hosted my garden tour 3 times, and it takes a lot of work. Great Q&A today.
Funny as I got an unusually large crop of blueberries here in Hampstead this year. The past few years only a handful but a bucket full now. I cover with black netting and it works.
Thank you so much for opening your garden. I have followed your channel for years and I know my garden has benefited from what I learn from you. You have a beautiful space, and I loved visiting it in person and meeting you and Stephany!
Thank you again for allowing us to tour your garden again. We came out with Marshall and the Johnston County Extension Master Gardeners when you just started the back patio. WOW, it looks amazing. You removed the remaining front turf too. The garden continues to look great!
Wow your patio turned out great and everything looks lush. So nice you opend your yard up free of charge! I learn so much from you. ( add pesticides when growing fruit trees in the south! I had apple trees that had to be sprayed constantly and still worm holes and unsightly brown spots. Super happy I cut them down ,MS 8a)
Hi Jim, thank you for always thinking of the wildlife like not deadheading native flowers- never thought that the birds would like the seeds and explaining healthy soil is whats important and not using synthetic fertilizers. Your patio came out beautiful!
I love the patio!!! I know in an earlier video you said you were not going to do a tutorial, but would you consider just doing an overview of your process and materials? Thank you for your videos!
When you go to Mt . Cuba note the little mailboxes around the garden ! Ask someone what they are about😉 . I told my husband that we are TOTALLY GOING to do that ! While you are u are up here Swarthmore College has an AMAZING GARDEN system! Very Mature impressive beautiful trees and stories of how they got there !
Your patio is gorgeous! I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make your tour, wearing a big foot boot to correct a fracture doesn't make for good touring. I so hope to make your next one. Your garden and Holly look so beautiful.
Hey Jim, great meeting you guys yesterday and seeing your beautiful garden! We’re in Greensboro 8a and our house faces west and gets really intense evening sun. I was wondering what would be a good ornamental or native flowering tree we could plant in the front that tolerates full even sun and could give the house shade in time? Thanks!
Great Question: my home also faces west but I’m in North Texas. The builder put 2 Cedar Elm tree (over kill) ~ would like to fix this in fall 2024❤ awaiting our answer.
All great answers. Your patio looks fabulous. It shows that you clearly know what you are doing! Your focus on building the soil is one of the most useful contributions to this format on You tube. It is simply not discussed enough. Thank you. I have been following a similar path in soil development and it is truly amazing what it can do. A topic on which it may be helpful to cover is handling too much water. The strong downpours we are getting with climate change need to be addressed. How do we deal with it?
Good morning Jim and Stephanie! I LOVE the Patio!! I LOVE the design of the new patio. 💐💚🙃
"Don't want to swim uphill"....a great metaphor for life 🌿✌😉

It was great to see your beautiful garden yesterday. So lucky you don’t have Japanese Beetle damage. Love the new Holly T-shirt.
Hi Jim and Stephanie- Your gardens are beautiful !! I’ve learned and keep learning so much from you. Thank you !!!🌷
Fantastic q&a as always - thank you- but I have to admit that your beautiful patio stole the show. Great job! 💚🌱🌸

Keep on keeping it real, Jim. Thanks for being you! Are you all going to Columbus next month? Can you recommend a campground?
Hi Jim love your video , the patio looks fantastic, I live in Florida ,wish I could have gone to your showing garden … someday God Bless 💕🙏🏽
I love the patio!!! I know in an earlier video you said you were not going to do a tutorial, but would you consider just doing an overview of your process and materials? Thank you for your videos!
Yes! I agree!
that's the most beautiful patio of all the channels I watch !
Absolutely love how the patio came out….your color choices make it look likes it been there from the beginning…..very cozy looking!!!!!

Your open garden was fabulous. Thank you! You and Stephanie are so generous with your time and garden. Love my “Plant Nerd” T-shirt.

Your patio is gorgeous! I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make your tour, wearing a big foot boot to correct a fracture doesn't make for good touring. I so hope to make your next one. Your garden and Holly look so beautiful.
Everything is so pretty and the patio looks great.
Thanks!

That is one lovely patio!
The patio looks great!
loved your explanation of why Latin, as a medical professional can appreciate the same.
This is such a beautiful shot of your garden with the patio!
The patio looks great! Now enjoy it!!!!
The patio is so pretty! Well done!
i love how the patio looks. thank you for all the information and inspiration.
Your patio is beautiful. You did a great job. The stone colors are perfect. The design is perfect! Just love it.
Yes, I also think the colors of the stone are so rich and deep in color.
Your garden, patio and Holly are looking beautiful!
keep on standing...thank you for your great informative videos
The patio looks great. A great job done.
The patio is so beautiful
The patio came out beautiful.
Good morning Jim and Stephanie! I LOVE the Patio!! It is beautiful 😍 I am so thankful to you and Stephanie for all your amazing and informative videos. 🙏 This may be a dumb question but, here it goes.... I live in zone 9b Texas Gulf Coast and I know Barberries are invasive, but, can they be grown in a pot successfully and not spread? (They are so beautiful) I cant believe you have been doing this for 38 yrs 😲 when you look like you are in your mid 40's! Keeping busy and healthy really makes such a difference! The explanation of naming plants in latin was great... Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for opening your garden for us. Loved seeing it in person. I got some great ideas for my own garden.
Hi Jim , your patio looks fantastic. You have done a great job. 👍
TY...
Jim, Charlotte resident. We have created beds and paths with pine wood chips over the last 3 years. The ground seems super hard and dry where we put down the chips. They have broken down, but the ground underneath seems like its still dry hard clay.
Hi Jim, love your patio. I was glad to see the mix of stone with brick. were you at all inspired by your fried Linda Vater?
Love the patio! Complimentary Holly colors! Everything looks so beautiful and lush! How about before and after pics?
I was wondering where you guys were. OMG, that patio has enhanced the area beautiful ly❤
I will always watch 😊 Big huggicates!
Thank you! I appreciate your channel. 🐝🌿
The garden looks beautiful!
